Macbook Startup CD-ROM Sound normal ?

Hello,
I'm new to mac and I wonder if it's normal on Macbook startup that the combodrive tries to eject or to pull in a cd ? Typically there is no cd inserted at boot up. The combodrive makes sound before the mac startup sound appears. The same effect after waking up from sleep mode.
Is this normal?
Best Regards,
Maik

Welcome to the Forum.
Yes. It's absolutely normal.
As you get to know your computer, you may hear small noises during startup and when using your hard disk and optical drive. For example, your hard disk and optical drive may whir and click as they access information or load and eject discs. After the computer runs for some time, a fan or fans may turn on to cool it, producing a faint sound. Small noises are part of the computer’s normal functioning.

  • Macbook without start up sound

    Good morning everyone.
I´ll tell you a little about my problem. I have a macbook 13" mid 2010 mod A1342. Last week, after cleaning with a cleaning foam for PC´s, I think i used so much foam into the keyboard, because i started up and wont start, i let pass time and tried to start up, it started but some keys was in dead short, and the laptop turns off, i cleaned again with fairly isopropyl alcohol in the entire surface and the back of the keyboard, i wait for it to dry for 2 days and the in tried again, the mac start and works fine without pushing any key, but some key was making dead short, i was using my iphone as a wireless keyboard the trackpad works fine.
Consulting with an apple tech center they pdiagnosed the keyboard probably was in dead short and but i have to left them to a entire diagnose.
I buy the piece(upper case) and i replaced by my self (i´m a desktop support techinician for mac and windows), the macbook works fine again with all the keys including mutimedia keys. but the start up sound was gone, now the sound is very low, the speakers works fine i probe it whit de audio midi config. app, i disconnect the speaker off the board, the spearkers of the keyboard works fine but with a very low sound, when i put a headphone or an external speakers the soud works very fine and with a hig volume.
Due to the constant reebots without turn off properly, the volume(image) of the mac was corrupt, i´ve tried to repair it with the Disc Utility app but the volume was very damaged, i tried to reinstall preserving my files but there´s no oprtion for that , the only option was a clean installation. i think a clean installation fix the trouble, but the sound was the same, after installing all the updates to this day, the result was the same. In the information menu displays onboard sound, in the prefs pane the output have onboard sound to play sounds, i configured into the audio and midi app the stereo option, bunt the sound is still low.
I don´t think the problem was the logic, beacuse it plays sound into headphones and the internal speaker and the keybooard speaker, the problem is only the startup sound gone and the level of the sound is very low (sound like a cell phone). i tried to reset the PRAM, in the faqs apple say that i have to hear 2 startups sounds and the i have to realease the pushed keys, but in my case there´s no sound, the laptop restart as they say, but without sound, i´m not sure if the PRAM was restored or not, i push the keys (cmd+op+p+r) turn the MB it try to start the a little bit reboot by it self, tyr to start, again reboot by it self, but without sound, if i keep pushing the keys the procees won´t stop, if i release the keys the macbook start fine(without sound), but i not sure if the PRAM was restored.
I hope anyone can help me.

i also got this kind of problem recently. i was connected to a speaker n the start up sound just didnt come out till i plugged out the speaker jack. this happen after i finished reinstalling my mac os x (snow leopard) including the updates. the condition worsen by having a delay when i started up my mbp for the 3rd or 4th times. the screen just black n i got a delay for 3 to 4 seconds till finally i heard the start up sound back n see the apple logo n the loading gear came out. i later restarted the mbp again to see whether the same problem occurs bt somehow it didnt. weird things happen to my mbp these days.. what should i do? any suggestion? :O

  • MacBook Pro has no sound at all. Called Apple and they said to reinstall OS X.

I have recently discovered that my MacBook Pro has no sound except for the startup chime. I called Apple and they told me to reinstall OS X because something went wrong in the OS. Is there any other way to fix this?

That's a really overly simplistic answer to your problem. Re-installing OS X doesn't always fix every problem. Yes, it might in your case, but it might not. Are you still under warranty? Either way, I'd take it into your local Apple Store and show them the problem and let them fix it. If the system has to be installed anew, so be it. But rule out other problems first.
Before you do anything, make sure that you have a back-up of your data, applications, etc. If you don't already have a back-up scheme, get an external hard drive and use Time Machine to back up your computer. Then take it into the Apple Store.
    Good luck,

  • Does your Macbook make Random Popping Sounds?

Hi all, does your Macbook make random popping sounds, on startup and periodically when your using your MB. I have this issue with two macbooks and i can't seem to find many other people who have this problem. I'm unsure whether it's the audio popping issue mentioned in other threads because this happens when no external speakers are plugged in. It's just pops away on it's own and it's driving me mad, i can't even pin it down to a specific task because it;s so random.
Both of my Macbook are operating under 10.4.11.
    Arrrrrrrrggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhh

Actually now that you've mentioned it, mine sometimes randomly makes the popping sounds, more to the likes of 'clipping' of speakers. But the odd thing is, mine only pops when connect my speakers (it's a Cambridge Soundworks 4.1 setup which i purchased over 6 years ago) - and the speakers have been fine all these while? I am positive that it's not my speakers because just recently (2-3 days ago) my brother brought his HP laptop and used my speakers and i did not hear anything even after he left his inferior (haha kidding) laptop on my desk to have a smoke without any music/sound coming out of the speakers.
To be more precise. my popping sound occurs specifically (as I haven't tried others) as I pause my music on iTunes. It does annoy the h*ll out of me and I really assumed that it was my speakers.
At least I'm not alone now. My Macbook specs are listed below.

My Macbook is not playing sound unless i have headphones in. The light in the headphone port stays on even when they are not plugged in. How can i fix this?

You might need to clean the headphone port (I was in the same situation and this worked for me).  Dirt, dust, and debris accumulate in the port and eventually the computer registers the debris as headphones being plugged in.  After cleaning the issue was resolved.

My Macbook Air has no sound and the volume is locked?

Hopefully one of these steps should solve the problem.
    1. System Preference > Sound > Output > Internal Speakers
        Highlight  Internal Speakers / Headphones
Make sure that Mute is not enabled.
    2. Remove the headphone.
If you see red light in the headphone port, plug the headphone
in and out of the port 5 or 6 times to flip the microswitch inside.
Sound output may be stuck in the digital mode.
    3. Reset PRAM.  http://support.apple.com/kb/PH4405
    4. Reset SMC.     http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
        Choose the method for:
"Resetting SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own".
    5. Applications > Utilities > Audio MIDI Setup
        Audio Devices window
        Side Bar
        Click the Built-in Output.
Under Mute any of the boxes checked? If so, uncheck it.

  • My MacBook Pro has no sound, but the volume setting works

My 15' MacBook Pro 2012's sound is not working. You can still change the volume by pressing F10 to F12, but not actual sound comes out. The headphone jack is not red (although I have experienced that problem before and fixed it). Whether the headphones are plugged in or if they aren't, there is still no sound. I am running on OS X 10.7.5 with a 2.6 GHz Intel Core i7 Processor, 8GB 1600 MHz DDR3 Memory and the storage capacity is 749.3 GB total.

Have you tried a PRAM reset?

I am getting no sound on my macbook pro. The sound does not play when I plug in headphones either.  I have tried making it louder quieter, restarting my computer, HELP!

There are many possible causes for this issue. Take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried.
    1. Start with the steps recommended in this support article. Don't skip any of the steps. It's the starting point for further efforts to solve the problem.
    2. If your model has an audio-out (headphone) port, and anything is plugged in, unplug it before putting the system to sleep.
    3. If you've installed something called "Memory Clean" or any other third-party software that is supposed to "clean" or "purge" memory automatically, remove it according to the developer's instructions and reboot. You should do that even if the software is not causing the problem, because it's useless.
    4. If you've installed an equalizer called "Boom" or anything similar, update or delete it and reboot.
    5. If an AirPlay device is selected for sound output from iTunes (or from other applications via third-party software such as "Airfoil"), deselect it.
    6. Launch the application "Audio MIDI Setup" by entering the first few letters of its name in a Spotlight search and selecting it in the results (it should be at the top.) Select the Output tab. If the Mute boxes are checked, uncheck them. Move the Volume sliders all the way to the right.
    7. If a red light is coming from the audio-out port, the internal switch is stuck in the position for digital output. You may be able to free it by inserting and removing a mini-stereo jack of the proper size. Inserting any kind of tool in the port may cause damage that won't be covered by your warranty.
If there's no red light, the switch may still be stuck in the headphone position. Try to free it the same way.
    8. Disconnect all wired peripherals except keyboard and mouse, if applicable. If more than one display is connected, disconnect all extra ones. Reboot and test.
    9. Boot in safe mode. Don't log in; just reboot as usual when the login screen appears. When you do, make sure the words "Safe Boot" do not appear in the login screen. If they do, the system is still in safe mode and sound won't work.
    10. Reset the NVRAM.
    11. Reset the SMC.
    12. Reinstall OS X after backing up all data. For a possible shortcut, see this thread.
    13. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store.

Hi i received the nano 7th gen for Christmas and I only seem to get 5 hours of battery life. I use the Bluetooth and Nike app so I expect more drain on the battery.  But I got more time out of running with my iPhone. Does this sound normal? I thought I should get close to 30 hrs of just play time alone.
ALso, my wife got me the Belkin armband to run with the nano but I sweat through the band resulting in the back of the iPod to get wet. Surely this is not good. Anyone have a recommendation for an armband that keeps moisture away from the pod?

iPod Nano are small and they don't use Wi-Fi access so you get less power time on a Nano. As for iPhone, since you got apps, Wi-Fi + 3G access, and everything else, they give you more time so you can keep using. Nanos are ment to listen to music, listen to radio, view your photos, watch videos (without Wi-Fi) and since you got BlueTooth on the nano, it counts as wireless access so it drains your battery faster.

  • Converting cassette to cd using garageband.  Voice on cassette sounds like chipmunk.  Is there a way to fix the speed during recording on garageband, so the voice sounds normal?

Librarian Asst. needs your help!  Trying to preserve WWII veteran's interviews presently on cassette.  However, on one cassette the voices sound like chipmunks (speed too fast during recording).  I know how to transfer the cassette recording onto garageband.  I just don't know how to transfer the recording at a slower speed, so that the voices will sound normal.  Is there a way?  Please help.  Thanks.

You could try two things (sorry, I can only point you to the current settings in GB'11, since I no longer have GB '09) but it should be very similar.
The easiest thing would be, if the vocal transformers do work. You can change the pitch of a voice using a "Vocal Transformer" effect. Click the "Edit" tab in the "Info" panel and click an empty brick to add a filter:
If that does not work, try to change the timing of the track. Enable "Follow Tempo&Pitch". If GB '09 does not have "follow tempo & pitch", record your tape directly into a Real Instrument track in GB to record a purple region.
Use the tempo slider in the LED display to lower the tempo, till the recording does sound more natural.
    Good Luck,
    Léonie
