Macbook Tiger Fresh Install Help

Hope someone can help me with this because it is driving me crazy. Last week my HDD died it was the original and about 4 years old. So i have purchased a new HDD and installed it into my Macbook but I'm having problems reinstalling the tiger software from the reinstall DVD that came with the Macbook. I have loaded it up and used the disk utilities to erase the new HDD. The problem accurse when the install start the disk check keeps failing.
I'm assuming this is something to do with my Disc or the optical drive the only problem is i only have the one disc and don't have access to another optical drive.
Does anyone have any ideas how i could get round this.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Since it is an old install DVD....is it clean and free of scratches?....maybe one of those restore kits for cleaning CD's and DVD's.....
If you could use Disk Utility to erase the new drive it apparently can read the DVD....have you formatted the new drive 'GUID' when you prepped it?

  • Late 2007 MacBook Pro - Fresh install

I have a late 2007 MacBook Pro. I want to do a fresh install. Is it best to use the original discs, which would take me back to tiger, or can I just use a new retail copy of Snow Leopard?
Will that retail copy of Snow Leopard hold all the proper drivers for the late 2007 mbp?

I just did a fresh install of Snow Leopard on my late 2007 MPB (I bought it in Jan 08 and it shipped with Leopard). Worked out fine, only difference is the Retail Snow Leopard doesn't bundle the iLife applications like the originals did. Other than that it went very smoothly.

  • Fresh Install Help

I wanted to know if someone could help with step by step instructions on hhow to do a fresh install of 10.6. I know I probably have to boot of the CD but after that I am a little lost. Thank you

I would move to SL if, and only if, I had an external drive with a bootable clone of my internal on it. I think that there is enough risk in going to SL that such conservatism is warranted. I would not use time machine. Without getting into detail, it can be highly problematic. You will be able to extract your settings, files, and programs from your clone if you do the current version of an erase and install.
To erase and install, start up to your DVD and stop after selecting your language. Use the menus to start Disk Utility and erase you drive. Quit Disk Utility and proceed with your installation. At the end, you will be able to choose to reclaim your settings, files, and apps from the clone (leave the external drive plugged in during the installation).
If you do not like SL, then you can restore your internal using the clone. I would do all cloning and related restoration with SuperDuper. This app is up to date.

  • Fresh Install Help Needed

I have worked with SunONE Directory Servers all the way back to verson 3. However, I am having a very hard time getting this new version to work.
I am attempting to install it in a Solaris 10 Full Local Zone, but I am having no success.
After running the native Solaris 10 install using the command: ./installer.sh
    Everything seemed to install correctly.
I then ran the dsccsetup initialize command as noted in the documentation. It noted that the agents were already registered and asked me to enter the manager password, which I did.
I then ran the dsccsetup status command as recommended. It noted that the agents were already registered and allowed me to enter a password.
    # ./dsccsetup status
DSCC Application is registered in Sun Java (TM) Web Console
DSCC Agent is registered in Cacao
Cacao is down. Start it using:
    /usr/sbin/cacaoadm start
    DSCC Registry has been created
Path of DSCC registry is /var/opt/SUNWdsee/dscc6/dcc/ads
Port of DSCC registry is 3998
Here is where the problems started occuring...
When I tried to start the CACAO, I get the following message:
    # /usr/sbin/cacaoadm start
Error when trying to start SMF service: [svc:/application/management/common-agent-container-1:default].
When I tried to start the webserver service, I get the following message:
    # /usr/sbin/smcwebserver start
Starting Sun Java(TM) Web Console Version 3.0.2 ...
svcprop: Couldn't find property `restarter/logfile' for instance `svc:/system/webconsole:console'.
Cannot determine if console service is running.
    Check log file:
Run "svcs system/webconsole:console" to determine its status.
Any assistance that can be provided to point me in the correct direction is appreciated.

You seem to have a pb with SMF.
I would check the SMF logs for more details on the real issue.
    Regards,
    Ludovic.

  • Where do I continue; I have a '07 Macbook Pro, and would truly appreciate your help as I freshly install my osx beginning with my original 10.4

    Please...
Where do I continue; I have a '07 Macbook Pro, and would truly appreciate your help as I have freshly installed my osx beginning with my original 10.4
    Thank you
    PS
I should mention; for reasons unknown to me, I no longer have use of my disk drive since reinstalling 10.4.

You can use software update to install the latest version of Tiger.  If you connect an external DVD drive you can install an upgrade to Snow Leopard.  The disk is available at the Apple online store:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
Further upgrades are dependent upon the EXACT model of your MBP.
    Ciao.

  • Why is Mavericks running so slowly after a fresh install on my Macbook Pro?

    I have a 13-inch, Early 2011 Macbook Pro.
Towards the end of 2013 Mountain Lion had been running very sluggishly, and I was getting the spinning beachball of death all the time, so I decided to do a fresh install of Mavericks. I wiped my whole HD using disk utility and installed Mavericks from a flash drive.
I then installed Microsoft Office 2011 from the original DVD and set up Mac Mail to work with my Gmail account etc. All very standard. I also installed X-Code and various other things related to my work, but nothing crazy. My HD is only half-full (I have 141 GB of free space).
Despite this, everything is running really sluggishly (especially when MS Office programs are open) and I have to watch the beachball of death spin for about 10 seconds every minute.
    Any help is greatly appreciated!

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to gather information about the state of your computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it on this page. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the request of a stranger on a public message board. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them.
Here's a summary of what you need to do: Copy a line of text from this web page into the window of another application. Wait about a minute. Then paste some other text, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page. The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. Details follow.
    4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
    6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking  anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in your browser, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign ($) or a percent sign (%). If you get the percent sign, enter
    exec sh
and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for your password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator rights.
The test may take up to a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. There wiil be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress until it's done. Wait for the line "[Process completed]" to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report your results. No harm will be done.
    8. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.

  • How can i gain access to my data on a Time Capsule after a fresh install of Mavericks? I can't access any backups through Time Machine... They appear purple/transparent, and I can't even select them to view their contents. PLEASE HELP!!!

So, I've got several thousand photos, and a decent amount of videos of my daughter, along with a lot of stuff for work stored on my Time Capsule, and now I can't access any of it. I did a fresh install of Mavericks on my MacBook Pro last week sometime, and haven't been able to figure out how to get my files back. Please Help!!! My daughter is 2 and a half, and every picture/video I have of her is locked on this thing. I was planning on making some photo/video projects fo my wife for Christmas, and now I'm definitely not going to be able to pull it off. Her birthday is at the end of January, though, so if I could have it by then, that would rule!
Basically, the bar on the right of the screen has some gray dates, which I can access (all backups after the Mavericks install), and purple dates that go all the way back to March (when I originally purchased and began using the TC) which deny me access/viewing. It's possible that I created a slightly different user name when I reset my MacBook, which I guess is most likely the cause, but I have no idea what to do now to correct it. Thanks for taking the time!

    Mavericks does really nasty stuff..
Try manually mounting the sparsebundle and extract the files you want.
    Yet another Pondini reference. http://pondini.org/TM/15.html
We have avoided Mavericks you see knowing that it would cause these kinds of issues..
You never ever load a new OS without doing a disk image beforehand.. TM is not reliable enough or trustworthy to be depended on.
If none of the above work..
I would get a USB drive on the computer and install Mountain Lion or whatever OS you had before you unfortunately upgraded to Mavericks.. Then use TM from that decent installation but mount the sparsebundle and choose the backup from a date well before mavericks was installed.
Once you have extracted the files.. or even done a full restore you might be able to extract the files you want.

  • Macbook Pro stuck in restart loop with fresh install

    Hello!
I have a Macbook Pro (Mid 2009) that I have been running Snow Leopard on up until now. I had been meaning to upgrade to Mavericks for a while, but had just never gotten around to it. Over the last month or so, my Macbook has been running really slow, hanging on the spinning beachball every few minutes for a few seconds (sometimes up to a minute or so). So I figured a clean start might be the best way to go, and while I'm at it, I might as well upgrade to Mavericks.
I backed up all my data, and then I created a Mountain Lion bootable usb (I had trouble making a Mavericks bootable usb from Snow Leopard, and since I had bought Mountain Lion for my desktop, I just decided to do a fresh install of that, and then upgrade to Mavericks). I had no problem booting to the usb, erased my hard drive and did a fresh install of Mountain Lion. However, after the install on the usb, my mac restarted and got stuck in a restart loop. It will chime, show the apple logo and spinning gears for a few seconds, then the gears stop spinning, and then the mac immediately restarts (this time displaying a message saying the mac has recovered from a shutdown in a number of languages), and the same thing happens again.
I was able to boot into the recovery partition, checked the permissions, found some that needed to be fixed, ran the repair permissions, verified the disk and was told the disk appears okay. Tried to then restart and same thing.
I have reset SMC, NVRAM, and none of these change anything. I booted in single user mode and ran fsck -fy, and recieved a message saying modifications were made, rebooted, same thing.
I have booted in verbose mode and the system restarts at the same point every time, right after displaying a message that says
SMC::smcReadKeyAction Error: (and then something with "BEMB", it goes by really fast so its hard to read exactly)
I have managed to boot into safe mode, but this has not made a difference. On one of my boots into safe mode, I went ahead and made a Mavericks bootable usb, and restarted the process: wiped the drive, installed mavericks, but I am in the exact same situation. I can still boot into safe mode.
I have seen some other issues that people have posted, but most involve the system freezing after the apple screen (not restarting) or do not involve freshly formatted HDs.
I'm just tying to find out if this is a hard drive issue, or if my mac itself needs to be retired. It has had a pretty long life (being 5 years old), and one of the RAM bays doesn't work (it is only running 4GB of ram, not sure if that can cause a problem with the boot cycle).
Sorry if thats a lot of information, I've been trouble shooting this for a few days. But thanks for any help you can offer!
    A strange note:
-when booting from the mavericks usb, I got stuck in the restart loop a couple of times. I managed to get past this by clicking the mousepad a few times right after the gears finished spinning. The mouse became visible, the apple screen shifted color a bit (went from a bluish gray tint to an orangish gray tint), the mouse became visible, and I got to the reinstall menu as normal. As far as I can tell the clicking may have been coincidental, but it was the only time I was able to boot the usb, and I wasn't going to risk restarting to test that, and then not be able to boot again.

Hey, thank you for your reply! I didn't have everything backed up, but I have a lot of my important stuff saved, though, so that's somewhat of a relief..
As far as my hard drive is concerned, would I have to send it in somewhere to get it fixed or would I just have to get a brand new one? If so, how much? Sorry if I seem a bit amateur, but this computer is my first personal computer, and I'm really lost without it!

I just purchased a macbook pro and was wondering about an install disk.  It seems to be missing some of the applications that should be on it from a fresh install.  I was wondering if I would have to purchase a new OS and do a fresh install?

Ahhh, well  you never mentioned that before. You need to contact your friend from whom you purchased the computer. He/She should have any and all install discs for any third-party software included as well as for OS X and the original pre-installed software.
Apple will gladly sell you replacements for any discs that did come with the computer originally, but they will not do anything for you because you purchased the computer used. If it's in warranty still, then you can get any warranty covered things taken care of through AppleCare:

  • I am trying to fresh install Mavericks (it gives me no other choice) on my erased MacBook Pro HD prior to selling on. It does not give me choice to use any other OS. Yet Mavericks is not available. ?? What to do please?

I wish to sell my 2008 MacBook Pro. Have erased hard disk and when I went to fresh instal Mavericks OSX 10.6 (it gives me no other choice in the disk utility program) It says in the Apple Store, it is unavailable. But because this is done from disk utility there is no operating system or access to choose another OS eg Yosemite.  I cannot download anything using my iMac as that came ready loaded with Yosemite, so it does not show as a purchase. I do not want to use the Time Machine backup as that has all my details, apps etc. in it.    Would the best way be to purchase a disk containing Mavericks the OS that was on it most recently. Can anyone offer advice please?

You need to re-install the OS the computer shipped with using the disks that were supplied with the computer. Contact Apple Support and have the serial number of your computer available. They will send you new disks for a small fee.

If it's the same machine (same CPU) there should not be any need to activate.  The actiovation is tied to your CPU.

  • Macbook pro i7 - Mid 2010 - Lion 10.7.2 fresh install CRASHES

    Hello MacHeads like my self,
I have a macbook pro - mid 2010 (i7, 8gb ram), I had a major disk corruption a few days ago (WD 750gb 7200rpm), bunch of bad sectors and I belive it took place becouse I had the crazy black screen failiur going on for a few weeks until apple released the update to fix that, but I had to hard reset the macbook several times and that could have caused the bad sectors...
Anyhow, I pulled the drive out, put a new one in, a 500gb 5400rpm made by Segate, fresh install of teh LION, made all of the available updates... it was running fine until yesterday when I got the the black screen again... I could not belive it... so I hard reste it again... today, the macbook crashed on it's own as I was writing a message using skype, I thought it was the black screen again (video failiur) but no, it actualy restarted on it's own.
    Any ideas?

  • Installing iLife '08 from Tiger discs on a fresh install of Snow Leopard

I just had a brand new hard drive installed on my imac. I am currently installing Snow Leopard as I type this post. I purchased the $35 SL disc as I have iLife '08 on my Tiger (10.4) discs. Before I install iLife I would like to know if I have to put disc 1 before disc 2 or just disc 2? Will I be able to just do a software update check and install to bring iLife '08 up to date with the SL? I realize that it won't be iLife '09 but I am concerned about '08 being compatible with a fresh install of SL.

One more thing...I only have the microsoft office for mac 2004. If I install this, can I check for a software update that will bring me up to speed with Office?
    Yes, check here...

Also, will the software updates (if I check and run a software update) happen for iLife '08?
    Yes, they should.
