MacBook two disks device order

I have notice some strange behavior at my MacBook Pro 7,1.
It has two disks. A BP 4 SSD at the main bay, and the original mechanical HDD using the CD-ROM sata port.
Everytime I turn it on (or reboot) the mac inverts the order of the disks. I noticed that using windows, because when the order changes, OSX won't boot (keep stuck on forbidden sign).
Windows device manager shows Disk 0 an 1. Sometimes 0 is the SSD (right), sometimes 0 is the mechanical (wrong).
Is there a way to solve this? EFI is up-to-date.

" A Mac that cannot boot from an appropriate Installer/Utilities DVD has Hardware problems."
That is, with those known bad disks and other peripherals removed to run the test.
The Mac Pro (65lb tower) Has Error Correcting Code (ECC) memory, so it instantly fixes single errors and stops using bad modules or halts on uncorrectable errors. At Startup, if there is not enough good memory to start, the power light blinks.
The chime is generated in software after millions of instructions have been successfully executed, and the first part of the power-on self test has passed. Your Mac is working.
EDIT:
10.7 Disk Utility (including the version on the DVD you made) has some ability to make some repairs on the partition table when:
a) you choose "Ignore" at startup
b) the drive is selected by Hardware_name
c) you choose ( Repair Disk ).

  • Two MacBooks, Two Users, One MobileMe Family account

My wife and I both have MacBooks (different ones). We have a MobileMe Family account. Each laptop uses are unique MobileMe names, address books, calendars, etc... (i.e. I have an account, she has a MobileMe account). We both also have our own iPhone linked to these accounts respectively.
We also have a 'joint' MobileMe account (email and calendar only). This same joint account is the iTunes account for both of us.
We are still on MobileMe. I see lots of people having problems.
One problem I anticipate we will have is: How will iCloud know how to sync our accounts between hers, mine, and ours? There apparently is only one setting: ON and OFF.
We want our individual MobileMe accounts syncing email and calendars from our MacBooks and iPhones -- but our Joint account (iTunes, email, calendar) syncing to us both.
Is this going to be a mess on iCloud?
Thanks for any tips on how to better prepare for the conversion.

    Roger,
    Thanks for the reply.
I think I understand what you are saying.
I am wondering why the iCloud would be device-dependent. For instance, we have in our home two MacBooks, two iPhones, one iPad, one AppleTV. So, somewhat preciently knowing we'd eventually have more Apple devices, our main account (esp for iTunes) is our joint account. Joint email, calendar, and iTunes/iBooks content. Works great.
So, if we had a family with children with their own accounts, would it then not be possible for each person to have their own accounts and iCloud syncing off of, say, one home computer?
I recall in Steve Jobs's presentation that they 'demoted' the computer to just a device served by iCloud (much like the iPhone, iPad, etc... So, if an iPad can have multiple MobileMe accounts, as a MacBook may, why couldn't iCloud sync them all?
Thanks for the instruction -- just trying to figure out how to get things set up when we go to iCloud (we haven't turned it on yet for this reason).
I see in the discussions forums loads of issues from people switching over.
Maybe the right way to do it is each MacBook retains their accounts. Same with the iPhones. But turn off the other, shared accounts. Turn on iCloud...let it see everything, get synced: Computer A with iPhone A with iCloud Account A (email and contacts only). And Computer B with iPhone B with iCloud Account B (email and contacts only). Then add in the shared iCloud Account (email/calendar/iTunes only).
    Thoughts?

  • Two iOS devices and a Snow Leopard Mac: trying to sync photos

My wife’s tech support group, that would be me , is failing in attempts to find an easy way to sync her photos between iPhoto on her Snow Leopard Mac and her two iOS 5 devices using iCloud.
The bottom line is how best to manage photos during a time all devices are not on iCloud.
    Two problems:
    1. She now has the two iOS devices reporting different numbers of pictures and slightly different albums. Shouldn't they be exactly the same?
    2. Is it better to have her sync her Snow Leopard Mac to the iOS devices using iTunes or iPhoto.
Any basic tips appreciated. Including if this is not the correct Community for this post.
    Thank you.

You are in the correct community for posting this question. Most people would never even think to ask. That's very thoughtful of you. Anyway .... to the point about syncing photos.
I do not use Photo Stream and use iCloud for very little as well. I still sync with iTunes because that works for me and I am used to doing it that way. I am running Lion on my MacBook so I have everything I need for iCloud, but .... This is how I do it.
Connect the iPad to the Mac and launch iTunes.
Click on the iPad name on the left side under devices.
Click on the Photos Tab on the right.
Select iPhoto as the folder from which you want to sync.
Click on all of the albums, events, faces, that you want to sync.
Make sure that the Sync Photos heading is checked/selected.
Click on Apply or Sync in the lower right corner of iTunes

  • Unknown hard disk devices after LVM blunder

    Hi all,
I have a rather weird hard disk partitioning setup because I always find myself needing to adjust my partitions from time to time. So I decided to create many logical partitions and put my personal data on an LVM partition that spans over multiple logical partitions... so that I could resize easily and create space for other stuff as required.
The problem - I created a FAT32 file system on one of the partitions (/dev/sda16) that wasn't part of the LVM at the time (no resizing required). After doing this, I now have 2 disk devices (/dev/dm-0 and /dev/dm-1) that weren't / shouldn't be there. Also, the partitions that are part of the LVM setup are detected as FAT32 partitions by fdisk. The non-LVM changes I made with fdisk and parted while for LVM management I use Kvpm. I grew the LVM Volume group and Logical volumes to fill the disk, including the FAT32 partition I created earlier.
    Here is some output:

  • Timecapsule shows two disks after mountain lion upgrade?

I have a TimeCapsule, which has been doing a good job wirelessly backing up my Macbook.
I recently upgraded from Lion to Mountain Lion and have noticed that time machine now shows me as having two disks:
I know that after the upgrade Time Machine seemed to be intent on performing a full backup. Does this mean that in effect it created a new drive on the TimeCapsule? If so, what will happen to the old disk? Will it ever be deleted? Or if not, how do I eventually remove it without losing my more recent backups?
And is there any way for me to rename the old disk? As you can see from the two screenshots, it isn't particularly obvious which one is which.

Ah, this may be expected functionality that has changed in Mountain Lion. I gather that it's to do with 'rotating backups'. These are described by Pondini here - http://pondini.org/TM/34.html - and appears to show the same display.
The thing that isn't entirely clear is that this window shows both the current backup disks and all available backup discs, even if in use. To quote Pondini: "(Oddly, already-selected disks appear in both sections.)"
**** right it's odd. Who thought that was a good UI? And thanks Pondini, that's answered my question.

  • SVM: migrating to a new disk device

    Hello,
We have a 70GB LUN from one SAN disk array on a Solaris 10 server. This LUN has been configured into SVM using a single disk device and then carved up into soft partitions. We will need to migrate this LUN to a new disk array. Since SVM only sees this LUN as a disk slice and not as a metavolume, is there any way to mirror/replace the disk without disabling the applications that have been built on the soft partitions? In this case, we have several active Solaris Containers root file systems living on these soft partitions. Some metastat output to give you a better picture:

I looked at the manual for "metareplace" and the language indicates that it would only work with a metavolume and not directly with the disk device.
    Thanks.

Okay, there's two ways to use SPs and mirrors. The easist way in most cases is to create a large mirror, then carve the SPs out of it. But you really have to start off doing that. Trying to convert this layout to that would be annoying, assuming it's possible at all.
The other way is to take the SP, toss a concat/stripe on it, then use that as the submirror base. It's a bit more annoying because you have to create the SPs on the other disk in the same manner.
So you'd take a look at 'metastat -p' output. That shows the commands to recreate the current layout. Use the SP creation items, but run them on the second disk. This sets up a second set of SPs.
    Then take all the SPs and put a concat/stripe on them. So for one of the existing SPs (like d101), you'd do like this;
    metainit d151 1 1 d101
Do that for all the SPs (on both disks). Now you can create the one-way mirrors from the currently-used side. As an example:
    metainit d201 -m d151
Now you've got the mirror. The problem is that the filesystem is still mounted from d101. You've got to unmount from d101 and mount d201 before you can sync the mirror to the other side (that's the only step that can't be done online). Once the side is no longer mounted, you can sync up.
metattach d201 d171 (or whatever you've named it).
    Good luck.
    Darren

  • Can I connect two firewire devices?

Ideally, I need two firewire devices running at the same time: One camera to capture footage and one firewire external hard disk for the media files (about 160 GB).
    a) I've been told that I need a firewire external disc, because a USB hard disk would slow down the editing in Final Cut. Is this true?
    b) If so, can I connect two firewire devices to my MBP (74.53 GB internal hard disk), which has only one 400 Firewire port?

    1. Yes, FireWire is faster than USB. However, it would be better to edit on your main hard drive. Use the external drive just for storage and backup.
    2. You can chain up to 255 FireWire devices provided the total power requirements did not exceed the port's capabilities. A single FireWire drive and a camera shouldn't be a problem. However, you should know that some FireWire cameras may not play well with other FireWire devices. If you find apparent problems when both are connected to the port, then you may need to use each separately. In this case you may need to put the hard drive on a USB port while the camera is connected to the FireWire port unless the camera also supports transfers on USB 2.0.

  • Oracle fails if one of two disks fail

    Hi Everyone,
I am new to Oracle RAC and have done a sample setup as per Jeffery Hunters instructions (http://www.oracle.com/technology/pub/articles/hunter_rac10gr2_iscsi.html).
Which by the way is an excellent document for us beginners.
When I built the test RAC so that I could do a proof of concept for my bosses I added a second separate disk (ISCSI setup - openfiler2).
    With OCFS2 I setup and mounted 2 volumes. (U02 and U03)
ASM has the rest of the disks as (ASM1,VOL1 and ASM2,VOL2)
This way I have an OCRFile and CSSFile on each disk plus ASM mirroring the ORACLE datafiles on each drive. ( I think )
Now my problem is that if a fake a failure of one of my disks the nodes will reboot and I am unable to get the DATABASE back up.
Shouldn't the Cluster stay up and continue running on the one disk.
    Any pointers would be appreciated.

    Hi,
    CRS is not starting up.
    [root@linuxora1 bin]# ./crsctl check crs
    Failure 1 contacting CSS daemon
    Cannot communicate with CRS
    Cannot communicate with EVM
    [root@linuxora1 bin]#
I checked the /var/log/messages and see:
May 22 05:30:44 linuxora1 logger: Cluster Ready Services waiting on dependencies. Diagnostics in /tmp/crsctl.5782.
May 22 05:30:50 linuxora1 iscsid[3282]: cannot make connection to 192.168.2.196:3260: No route to host
    May 22 05:30:50 linuxora1 iscsid[3282]: Connection to Discovery Address 192.168.2.196 failed
The above would be the case as I have emulated the this disk has failed. I have two iscsi devices, the other being 192.168.2.195. These are mounted to the nodes via OCFS2 as /u02 and /u03. Have an OCRfile on each device - plus 2 CRSfiles on /u02 and a CRSfile on /u03
/u03 is the one that is failed. So I should have one OCRfile and 2CRSfiles available.
192.168.2.195 is mounted as /u02 and it's up and running
192.168.2.196 is mounted as /u03 and it currently turned off to emulate a disk failure.
I checked the diagnostics in /tmp/crsctl.5782 as per messages log and it has the following:
    [root@linuxora1 bin]# more /tmp/crsctl.5782
OCR initialization failed accessing OCR device: PROC-26: Error while accessing the physical storage
    [root@linuxora1 bin]#
So based on this, my problem is that CRS isn't starting up cause OCFS2 can't mount the failed disk? This would explain why the nodes reboot when I emulate the disk failure?

  • Shared disk devices across zones/containers

    Hi there,
To add a disk device to a zone i think that i can do this:
    Add a device.
    zonecfg:my-zone> add device
Set the device match, /dev/dsk/c1t0d0* in this procedure.
    zonecfg:my-zone:device> set match=/dev/dsk/c1t0d0*
    End the device specification.
    zonecfg:my-zone:device> end
Could i then create another zone and add the same disk device?
I am thinking about installing 10g RAC across two zones for dev/training purposes.
    Thanks
    Dermot

    Dermot,
There is a special forum for Solaris 10 Zones.
If you launch this question there, David Comay might answer you.

WD My Passport 1TB USB external drive randomly ejects from my iMac and MacBook Pro.
The drive is approximately 4 years old.  When the drive is plugged in, I can see the data.  It appears to be working properly.  The only problem is that everyone of my Apple Machines are ejecting it.   Several years ago, this drive connected to Mac machines with no problems.   I have tried two separate USB cords.  I have updated the firmware.  I have tried it on my MacBook, two different Macbook Pro's, and my iMac.
All give the same result of random ejection of the drive and the error message of:
    Disk Not Ejected Properly
Eject "1TB Passport HD" before disconnecting or turning......
Searching through the web, it seems this is an common/known problem.   Does anyone know the solution?
    Thanks,

Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.

  • Disk Devices in SAR output

sar -d gives me the following output:
    sd0 0 0.0 4 0 0.0 0.0
    sd1 1 0.0 2 55 0.0 14.3
    sd1,a 1 0.0 2 45 0.0 18.0

    sd2,r 0 0.0 0 0 0.0 0.0
I know which "sd" device corresponds to which disk devices.
    But, what are the sd1,a / sd1,c / sd1,i / sd1,q.... devices?
It doesn't make sense that they are paritions because sd1 and sd2 are my two disks that make up my mirrored root zpool. I don't have 6 paritions on these disks.

Indeed they are partitions. though you might not have allocated any size in that partition. But partition still there. You can map sd to ctd easily by using
ls -l /dev/dsk/* and grep for sd devices.

  • Replacing global disk device

    Hi,
Looking for suggestions, guidelines, HOWTOs, etc. for the following scenario.
    SC 3.2, Sol 10 08/07
We have a 50GB global disk device on SANA in a two-node cluster. We need to replace this device with a LUN from SANB as part of our storage migration project. This device is also a quorum device, and it is the data directory for the Oracle application group in the cluster.
How do I stop the Oracle group but mount the disk for copying the data, and then how do I change the configuration to accept the new disk as the cluster and quorum device?
    Thanks.

    Tim,
thanks for the information. It's almost exactly what I need, but there's one more bit I need some guidance on. I realize this is kind of basic stuff, but it's been a while since the cluster was created and configured (along with the RG) and the administration has been pretty hands-off during that time period. How do I swap out the disk resource A for B? I was looking at the properties of the RG and the resource yesterday and it only seemed to be based on the mount point rather than the DID, but I would think that there is a setting/dependency configured for the actual DID somewhere in there.

And on the off chance that it isn't configured to the DID, but should be, how do I set that to make this proper? There is an entry for /u02 in vfstab on both nodes. Is that the correct way? Again, it has been a long time since I set this up. :)

I have 4 iPads and one apple Id. Two the devices record clash of clans and dragonvale individually and the other two are tied to the other two. Drives my kids nuts. How do I fix this?

Also, I'd prefer to keep the same ID on both so I will keep access to my calendar/contacts/etc on both devices.  Would I be able to share reminders and voice memos and the like as well?  And how often would they update each other?  If I edit a contact on the 5, and the 4 is in wifi, assuming they're both on my same ID, will the contact update on the 4?

  • Can I have a Face Time conversation between two Apple devices using the same Apple ID?

Can I have a Face Time conversation between two Apple devices using the same Apple ID?

Yes, you can, but the two devices can't have the same e mail address associated with both.  Each, device needs its own unique e mail ADR.  In your case, the iPod can call your iPhone if you use the phone number, but the iPhone can not call your iPod because it must use the e mail address, and if the email address is the same on both, the iPhone will think it's calling itself, so the call will not go through.
