MacBook wakes from sleep by itself

Hey!
I got a new MacBook some weeks ago. Works fine so far despite a little fact: It sometimes (randomly?) wakes from sleep (at night). Of course I usually sleep and won't notice anything. But happened 3 times by now that I woke (including last night) from the machines wake up noise (like when you open the lid). It goes back to sleep after a little while, so no real worries about that. But I find it rather strange waking up by itself. Is it possible there are any scheduled wake ups or something like that?
(My previous MacBook - which really had a lot of problems - showed a likely issue. It woke up directly after I put it to sleep. This was caused by some bluetooth problem. Well, this time the wake up issue is not that serious but I'm concerned as well. Do not want the current MacBook behave like the old one.)
I copied the relevant snippets from the logging console this morning. Close the machine at around 11pm, wake up time was around 2am last night (looked at my watch) and the log depicts, me waking up and opening the lid this morning at 9am:

Any explanations, help or suggestions regarding my problem? Do I need to be concerned? (Can not really return the MacBook to Apple as I'm writing my master thesis at the moment..) Or is that normal behaviour? Let me know if you need more details about the machine or this post ended up in the wrong category.
Thanks for your help and best regards!

my MB started just starting up all by itself. i have done almost everything now and still i can't get it to stop starting up. it just doesn't want to stay off. i have thrown out the powermanagement.plist and the wakeup.plist. i have turned off the energy settings, bluetooth, etc. wireless is also off. i have reset the PMU by removing the battery and pressing the power button for 5 secs. the machine would shut off only to come on after 5 mins or so. i have tried shutting down by holding the power button until it shuts down.... come on apple.... what's the problem? it didn't have this before.... just started happening last night. we didn't install or updated anything last night. my wife just checked and replied to her emails.

  • I lose network connection after MacBook Wakes from Sleep

I upgraded to Mountain Lion on my 27" iMac and 15" MacBook Pro. iMac is doing fine. MacBook Pro, however, when it wakes from sleep, seems to have the network untility crash.
So the computer wakes from sleep, and the little status bar radar thing does its little sweep and doesn't just go solid. . If I click on it, it shows my Airport as connected, but after clicking, it freezes. the second to the bottom bar goes solid and the cursor becomes a spinning beachball. If I open system preferences, and select network, it freezes. The only way I can seem to get back on line is to reboot. I have an airport extreme with an older (g) airport express that I use to beam music to my stereo. The MacBook Pro is about 2009 vintage—you can still get to the battery, HD and memory—and the iMac is a bit later. One of the first 27" models, not quad core.
Anyone else having this problem? What more info would you need to help resolve? I'm a novelist and this is killing my productivity.

    Try the basics first:
Change your router channel number.  Most times this works & is all you have to do.
Disconnect & reconnect your modem.  unplug it for about 10 seconds.  Plug it back in.  Do the same for Apple’s routers.  Wait for everything to reboot.
    System Preferences>Network
    Click the Assist Me button.
In the next window that pops up, click the Diagnostic button & do the necessary.

  • Wakes from sleep by itself

I have a 20" iMac (Intel Core 2 Duo) and an issue appears to have started after the recent software update (not sure if this is the culprit).
My iMac wakes unexpectedly after being at sleep (sometimes after 10 mins sometimes a bit longer). I have NO bluetooth devices attached (and bluetooth is off anyway) and I do not allow bluetooth devices to wake the computer.
I also have the "Wake for Ethernet..." unchecked. I have also tried to trash the com.apple.PowerManagement.plist file and rebooted. And also have run Onyx to fix permissions and run the maintenance scripts.
I just say someone on a different forum post that they too are having this problem with new iMac. Anyone hear of a fix or suggestions as to what may be the cause?

    Steve,
Okay more advice. If you go to: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1849881&#1849881
you can read the advice suggested but this one looked really helpful posted by Dale Welsshaar:
This is for a Mac that won't sleep.
First, read things in Apple doc.#25801 on sleep settings.
USB devices and hubs often cause Macs to not sleep or wake quickly from sleep (notably HP printers and scanners, HP all in ones, and Cannon scanners). Disconnect all USB except for keyboard and mouse and try. If it sleeps, add one back at a time testing after each one to find the culprit.
If you've set your Mac to recieve faxes, it may not be able to sleep. It might also have a damaged preferences file.
If you use your Mac for faxing, open System Preferences. click Print & Fax, click the Faxing tab, and uncheck the Recieve Faxes On This Computer box.
If that does'nt work or you've never faxed on your Mac, go to Finder/Hard Drive /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration and delete the com.apple.PowerManagement.plist and com..apple.AutoWake.plist files (if your Mac asks, type your admin. password).
If the latter file isn't present in the folder, go to user name(probably your name)/Library/Preferences, delete the com.apple.systemuiserver.plist file, and reboot your Mac.
    Hope this helps!
    P.S. One member here reported this (Michael Gleason);
"I have had this problem with my IMac G5. It is surprisingly irritating. LaCie's Silverkeeper backup software was the cause. By default it gave itself permission to wake up the computer to check if a backup was needed. Do you have this or a similar program installed which has scheduled activities including wake-up permissions as an option?"
Dave Hamilton provided this link, xlr8yourmac.com, to a member, which addresses failure of deep sleep with some users that updated and added new FireWire and USB cards.
    Cheers!
    DALE
Hopefully this will help you out even more,
    S.

I have the same problem with my iPod. It is very anoying!
Does it need a service to work again?

  • Nano wakes from sleep by itself and plays and plays.

Has anyone had their Nano waking up from sleep and playing the first song in your library. It happens at least once a day without even being touched. It has also done this when I was listening to a podcast. Just quit my pod cast and switched to playing the first song in library.
I am going to do a restore on it and see if it goes away. The most annoying thing is if I do not notice it drains the battery.
    Thanks.
    Cheers, John.

HAHA. I figured this out just before I read your post. It looks like my son setup an alarm and I did not know it.
    Thanks for the reply though.
    Cheers, John.

  • IMac wakes from sleep by itself after security update 2010-001

Since installing last weeks security update 2010-001, my iMac has suddenly started waking up when it should be asleep. Now I've had Auto Sleep problems with my iMac before, but this problem of finding my iMac running when I left it asleep started immediately after the update. Now, one thing additional I've notice since the update is that I often see the message on the screen "Keyboard Connected" when it always was or should have been and I wonder if this is related to my iMac waking up. Anyone else seen this problem since the update or have any ideas?

Thanks to you both for suggestions, but I still have the same problem after trying them and as I said in my title this only started after the 2010-001 security update. As a test I put my iMac to sleep at 13:35 and it woke up by itself at 13:46. Here is the console log below, does it help at all in finding the root cause?

  • Macbook wakes from sleep, restarts when shut down, tried everything. "wake reason = "

My macbook (2008 unibody, 2.4ghz, os x 10.6.8) will not stay asleep, and it restarts when I shut it down. For example, I'll close the lid, it will sleep, then wake a few seconds later, and eventually go back to sleep. After a few cycles of this, the CPU reaches over 80 celcius, but nothing indicative of heavy cpu usage in the activity monitor except for "kernel task." I guess this is because the fans have to keep shutting off when lid is closed. Of the things I've tried, the following have not worked:
*fiddling with all possible energy saver preferences
*disk utility repairs, even with the snow leopard install disc
    *resetting pram and smc
*loading into windows 7 partition, same thing happens
*loading into my external HD, same thing happens
*deleted everything in the LaunchDaemons folder
    *turned off bluetooth entirely
    *turned off airport
*turned off "Set date and time automatically"
    *nothing plugged into USB
*tried with/without magsafe plug, with/without battery, same problems occur
*no errors returned with applecare's Techtool Deluxe
*ran every maintenance script I could: crons, clear cache, rebuilds, updates
*ran the hardware test from one of the install disks, no problems detected
    *turned off login items
I've studied the messages in Console.app like my life depended on it and the only thing that's bugging me is that I get "kernel---------Wake Reason = ". It doesn't give me a wake reason, it's just empty. I can't find anything around the net that could tell me why this occurs. I put "syslog |grep -i "Wake reason ="" into the terminal.app and apparently this has been happening for a week now, hundreds of instances of no wake reasons.
Could this be a hardware error?

Mine does the same thing. I noticed that he little green/yellow light on the magnetic power adapter would go out every once in a while as well. If I would keep the system closed and unplug then replug it, then it would unsleep/sleep whenever it was connected. I switched power adapters with my other MBP and it behaves normally now. ymmv

  • Mac wakes from sleep by itself

    Hi,
I see my screen popping on for no reason staying on for 5 minuets or so then going back to sleep. Is this normal. I don't recall it doing this before. From what I understand, to get spyware or malware on the computer I need to instal it. But I could be wrong. Thanks for any help.

    Hi
My Imac wakes itself from Screen Sleep? Hot corners have become increasingly unstable. Reseting PRAM has not made any difference, Apple care have said "we could try to install a fresh copy of just the installation system on a second partition".
Is there anymore advice on this before I go ahead with this.
    Thanks for reading

  • Macbook wakes from sleep - no backlight - have to restart

I have had the following happen twice in the past week:
1 - With a full battery, but without the power adapter plugged in, I have closed the lid to put the MacBook to sleep.
2 - the sleep light pulses (I always check for this based on past experience)
3 - Within a 1/2 hour, I open the screen - still no power adapter attached.
4 - The screen does the quick blank flicker that the MacBooks sometimes do, as the Cd drive makes its "is there a disc?" noise.
5 - The screen remains dark. By holding up the MacBook to a light, I can see that my desktop and everythign I was working on are back in the usual state - just unlit.
6 - The screen brightness control does not make a difference. The MacBook seems to be functioning otherwise normally, excepting the absent backlight.
7 - Closing the lid, letting it sleep, and opening the lid again does not remedy the problem.
8 - On restart, the screen remains without a backlight until the login screen appears - then everything is back to normal.
    Some info on my MacBook:
    Week 20 build - white, 2 GHZ, 1 Gig RAM, 80GB HD
Sent in once for the sudden shut down repair, so the motherboard is newer than the computer.
I am about to call Apple anyway as my CD drive has stopped accepting discs.
I am all up to date on the firmware.
    Thanks in advance.

Ive had my MacBook sice october last year, and this has hapened on random occations from about a month after. Sometimes the screen will loose it backlight as you say and then other times it will be perfectly fine for weeks. Mine does seem to occur when its runing off the battery and not from the mains, where i use the track pad and not the mouse.
The only ways i have found able to bring the light back on without having to restart, is to either
    1. Close the lid, sending the mac into sleep mode then reopen it and press any key, or
    2. Keep clicking F1 until the brightness appears to be at its lowest and then press F2 to increase it to the desired brightness.
But this is painfully annoying, surely it must be some hidden setting in the OS to do with either the track pad or power management. Apple could so easily fix this if they released a specific update. Or have they already??? Please could someone shed light on the situation.
    Thanks Ed

  • Firefox opens an empty window when macbook wakes from sleep.

    ''duplicate of https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1013678''
Firefox 31 is active and I close the Lid of my MacBook air. when opening the LID sometime (1 hour?) later an empty windowframe appears. The address-bar is unresponsive. The situation cures itself after a minute or so.
Closing Firefox and reopening it, helps immedeately

    Hi hstoeri,
This has not happened to me before, but in the past I have seen threads that have narrowed it down to hardware acceleration.
Try disabling graphics hardware acceleration. Since this feature was added to Firefox, it has gradually improved, but there still are a few glitches.
You might need to restart Firefox in order for this to take effect, so save all work first (e.g., mail you are composing, online documents you're editing, etc.).
    Then perform these steps:
#Open Firefox ''Options'' window (''Preferences'' on Mac or Linux) as follows:
#* In Firefox 29.0 and above, click the menu button [[Image:New Fx Menu]] and select ''Options'' for Windows or ''Preferences'' on Mac or Linux.
#In the Firefox Options (or Preferences) window, click the ''Advanced'' tab, then select ''General''.
#In the settings list, you should find the ''Use hardware acceleration when available'' checkbox. Uncheck this checkbox.
#Now, restart Firefox and see if the problems persist.
Additionally, please check for updates for your graphics driver by following the steps mentioned in the following Knowledge base articles:
    * [[Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems]]
    * [[Upgrade your graphics drivers to use hardware acceleration and WebGL]]
Did this fix your problems? Please report back to us!
    Thank you.

  • MacBook refuses to wake from sleep!!! Please Help!

MacBook wakes from sleep mode for about 2 seconds then the screen just goes black. It seems as if the computer wakes from sleep properly but then screen only appears for a brief time. I did notice that my settings (background etc.) seemed to have been restored to default, not sure if this helps. Order of events below.
    1. I hit the space bar
    2. Computer makes noises then screen pops up
    3. About 2 seconds later the screen goes black
    4. Process repeats
    Please Help...

I would suggest running some system maintenance and see if that clears it up. Have a look at the following: http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=2005041817191411

  • New macbook pro wont wake from sleep

Hi everyone, I got the new macbook pro 15 inch with retina display about a month ago, the problem is it will not wake from when the screen goes to sleep, not all the time but enuff for me to want to throw it out the window, when it is in sleep mode i go to touch the touch pad then the keybord lights up like its about to work then dies and i end up tuning the computer off from the off button.
I have been on the phone with apple for many hours and its doing my head in and losing my mind and they have done a re set, a re install and also after that didnt work we wiped the computer and downloaded the software directley from apple and started fresh again " AND STILL DOES NOT WAKE FROM SLEEP " i have taken it back to jb hifi where i got it from in Liverpool westfields and they said sorry we cant help you and apple are saying you have to take the computer to apple and leave it with them for a few weeks, very hard for me as i use the computer everyday to run my business and i feel ripped off big time they should replace it straight away.
Has anyone had this problem before ? any ideas ? thank you very much for you time.  Dave

Apple has replaced systems for others after several tries at repairs have failed.  Find an Apple Authorized Service Provider and take it in for service, as Apple support directed.  Apple would have replaced the system outright in the first 14 days of ownership. After that, you need to give them the opportunity to repair it under warranty.
Since you use it for business, have you asked if the Apple Authorized Service Provider can provide a loaner? Or considered renting one for the short period it would be repaired? Or talked to the Apple Authorized Service Provider about expediting repair?

  • MacBook Pro crashing and restarting on wake from sleep?

My MacBook Pro 17inch Late 2011 has started crashing and restarting on wake from sleep 3 out of 4 times.  This is really interrupting my workflow and I need help to remedy it.
Here is about 2 minutes from the system log at the time of restart.
After looking at some other posts, this may be a spontaneous log-out, but I DO NOT have automatic log-out selected in security preferences.

  • Macbook Pro takes long time to wake from sleep

Hi, I have recently purchased the latest Macbook Pro (Mid-2012, not the Retina display version), and I've noticed if the Macbook is left switched on, with the lid down and not plugged into the mains, it will take a long time to wake from sleep. I've looked for similar posts, and everyone describes it as a long delay, but for me the screen is greyed out (but transparent) and a process bar appears, which fills up and then the display loads properly, but it takes a further 30-50 seconds to activate things like the mouse and wifi etc (it feels like it has completely frozen).
Has anyone experienced this and is it normal? I looked up standby mode, but am led to believe this is only with the retina display models, so am a bit worried.

    Hi Thumbnut,
This article may help explain what is going on:

    I hope this helps!
