MacBook will not display on external monitor in clamshell mode

System information:
13 in. MacBook (2.4Ghz Intel 2-Core)
10.6.7
External Display connected with Apple DisplayPort VGA adapter
Apple Wireless Keyboard
Generic wireless mouse that connects to a USB stick plugged into the MacBook
This is dirving me nuts because it was working perfectly until about 2 weeks ago. I was following the pocess outlined here. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3131
Here is what happens now:
MacBook display and external monitor are in mirroring mode. All devices are powered on and plugged in.
Close MacBook lid. MacBook goes to sleep. Blinking LED.
Hit spacebar on the Apple Bluetooth keyboard. The LED changes to steady on. However, the external display never shows the desktop. I've tried Command-F1... nothing.
If I open the lid again... the MacBook goes back to sleep.
I then have to pull out the DisplayPort VGA adapter to wake the MacBook up again.

You could try resetting the SMC and see if that helps.

  • Early 2011 15inch MacBook Pro not displaying on external monitor

I have an early 2011 15 inch MacBook Pro and I tried to connect it to a Samsung U28D590D 4k display.  My computer is recognizing it as a monitor and saying that the output resolution is 2560x1440, which is what I expected considering my graphics card is an Intel HD Graphics 3000 512 MB and my chipset is an AMD Radeon HD 6490M with 256VRAM.  I just don't know why its not displaying on the monitor.  Any help will be very appreciated.

i did manage to get a little step further and get my mac to ask about resolutions but it still won't appear on the monitor

  • My macbook pro will not detect any external monitors

My macbook pro will not detect any external monitors, worked 'once' when connect to a TV.
Have read a lot of web comments, most not very usefull.

    Hi a,
Check the setting in Sys Prefs > Displays.
Try a different adapter and/or cable.

  • MacBook Pro will not run my external monitor

My External monitor will not come on with my MacBook Pro after I installed Mountain Lion. I get the wallpaper but that is all. Any ideas? I have been running the Mcbook Pro with the cover closed with the external monitor, with no problems up until I installed Mountain Lion.

My hard drive is now connected.  But Time Machine will not let me select the hard drive as my back up drive. This hard drive was used on another Macbook, so Time Machine doesn't seem to recognize the hard drive on the new one.  Do I need to reformat the hard drive? I hate to do that because I have the previous backups on there.

  • MBP will not connect to external monitor

I am using 13" late 2011 MacBook Pro. I used to be able to connect it to an external monitor, but recently, I have not been able to.
When I plug it into the monitor, the screen on the MBP will flicker blue and freeze, but the computer never detects the monitor.
I have tested the HDMI cable, and that is not the problem.  Any ideas what could be causing the problem?

    Morning aeck692,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
For troubleshooting on this, take a look at this article:
Apple computers: Troubleshooting issues with video on internal or external displays
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1573
It may not hurt to reset the Mac's parameter RAM.
    Resetting NVRAM / PRAM
    Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
If the display does not come up, was previously set to an unsupported resolution, and still results in no video:
    Start up in Safe Mode.
    Hope this helps,
    Mario

  • T530 - Dual boot not displayed on external monitor when docked

    Hi,
I just got my new T530, loaded all my applications and data from my T61. The T530 is connected to the 4338 docking station.
I have Win 7 on the internal disk, and Win 8 on the ultrabay disk.
Dual boot works fine when undocked, but when docked and the lid is closed I don't see the dual boot selection on the external monitor and the PC boots into Win 7 (which is my default OS).
When cold or warm booting I also don't see the Thinkpad splash screen.
I did not have this problem with my T61 when docked. There the splash screen and dual boot selection was displayed and I was able to select which OS I want to boot into.
Any ideas whet I can do here?
    Thanks

As I came across this it's a matter of the two graphic cards and how they are shared.
The Intel always drives the Laptop-Display and the analogue port, the digitalports at the docking are all driven by the Nvidia Card.
The splashscreen will always be displayed with the intel card and therefore not be visible with the digital ports at the docking.

  • MBP not displaying to external monitor at startup, but does after login

After I installed Yosemite my MBP will not automatically display to my external monitor (HDMI) when I start it up. I have to first login to my MBP and then my external monitor is immediately recognized and my mirroring desktops works as intended...as it did before I upgraded to Yosemite. I have no idea why the signal to my external monitor doesn't/will not work upon system start up. Anyone out there know??

Did you find  a solution? I have the exact same problem. I just install Yosemite and did not have the problem before.

  • 2010 Macbook Pro 17 display on external monitor only after power on

THis has happened a few times over the past 6 weeks - I power on first thing in the morning and the primary screen is black, and the login screen appears on the external monitor. Shutting it down and starting up again does the same thing. When it happened before I'd power off, remove the external display, power on and then I'd get the primary display back agin but it's not working this time and I've only got the external display working.
Is there a utility to 'kick' the graphics into the correct mode, or is this some type of hardware problem?
    Thanks,
    Graham

The primary laptop monitor starts blank, and only the external monitor is working.
If I shutdown, unplug the external monitor and power back on the laptop screen stays blank. If I plug the external monitor in the screen that would normally have been on the primary laptop screen is on the external monitor, and the laptop screen remains blank. At this point I can only work with an external monitor plugged in, and that limits my portability a bit

  • Will not display on most monitors.. very frustrating..

I purchased my MBA a couple weeks ago and have successfully been able to connect 1 monitor (over VGA).
I have tried two projectors (neither will work, although it will detect both of them) and it will not connect to my Viewsonic at home (both my other macbook and macbook pro work fine on it).
It's extremely frustrating.. I'm finding this MBA to be the most flakey laptop I've ever owned.. Anyone have and advice?

Have you found the solution to your problem? I tried to connect it to my Viewsonic VG2030wm and so far it cannot detect the display

  • Mac will not sleep unless external monitor unplugged

Updated Mid 2011, 27" iMac to Yosemite. Computer would not sleep. Checked network settings, sleep settings, unplugged external drives. Finally slept when I unplugged an external monitor. I'm using an old cinema display with an adapter into the Thunderbolt port. Plugged it back in, Mac wouldn't sleep.
Is there a fix for this?

Apparently there is a task running that wants periodic disk access. Have you tried simply looking at Activity Monitor to see if there's a task running that might have been forgotten?
Try creating a temporary, "test" user account. Log out of yours and into the test account. Does that fix anything?

  • Imac will not power an external monitor

My Imac G4 has a black screen on which I can see the apple desktop with a flashlight. I hooked up an external monitor to see if I could salvage the computer abut the new monitor says "no signal." Based on other posts I thought it might be the inverter, but any advice would be appreciated?
    Thanks

Sorry about my lack of details, I am using the Apple brand of display port to DVI adapter, a DVI cable that is plugged into an ACER 26" monitor (not sure of the model nuimber right now as I am at work).  This monitor and DVI cable worked fine during reboots/shutdowns, etc while connect to 2 different Intel based PC's that I have that also run dual monitors.  As I mentioned I've done PC work for many moons and would know how to check for drivers, etc, but now in the Apple environment I am lacking these same skills. So I've done all the standard stuff, switching known good cables etc, but I am unsure of how to uninstall drivers and those type of tasks if need be.  I know it could be a monitor problem, but that same monitor works fine while connected to the PC's that I have.

  • IMac will not boot with external monitor connected

    Hi everyone,
I have a mid 2010, 27" iMAC.  If I connect an external monitor to the Mac (using display port), everything works as it should. If I try to reboot or do a cold boot while the external monitor is connected the system boots to a white screen and no further.  Sometimes I get 2 spinning colored wheels, but nothing more.  If I let it sit at the white screen long enough the screen saver kicks in and everything goes black, move the mouse or hit a key and the white screens come back.
I've tried a few things (that I've found on-line) but I'm an old PC user (25+ years) so I'm not used to or know all the tricks or what I really should be trying.
I just upgraded to Mountain Lion thinking maybe that would help, but no change.
Any help would greatly be appreciated.

  • Sleep not working with external screen in clamshell mode

I have my macbook with Lion operating in clamshell mode with an external display connected as the main screen.
Although I have set the computer to sleep after 10mins, this never happens and I have to sleep the computer manually every time.
If I disconnect the external display, or open my Mac and work with both screens, the computer does sleep properly after the set time.
I can't seem to find the fix anywhere, and the people in the mac store couldn't help me either.
    Can anyone help please?
    Thx,

How to disable the closed-clamshell mode?
I think, this is what you're looking for ... maybe you want to uproot that question.
