MacBook won't go to sleep automatically

Just recently, I've noticed that my MacBook won't go to sleep. It was fine for the last year. If I go to the Apple Menu and tell it to sleep, it will. But, it doesn't sleep in the prescribed amount of time set in the control panels.
Does anyone know how to solve this problem?

I had this same problem and I did what you said unfortunatly it seems as if the fix is only temporary. After sleeping once it won't do it again. I've reset the pram, dont know if this is related. And internet sharing and blue tooth are off.

My MacBook no longer goes to sleep automatically after the 'Computer Sleep' period has elapsed and without me using it. I can however make the MacBook go to sleep by using a sleep command from the menu or the one on the logon screen, as well ask closing the lid.
I have tried hard to find out what the problem is, but to no avail
1. I have reset the NVRam
2. I have reset the SMC
3. I have deleted the sleepimage cache
A. I have turned off 'Wake for Network Access'
B. I have a Magic Mouse, but have turned off 'allow Bluetooth devices to wake this computer.
My MacBook won't sleep even if I close all programs beforehand.

media (mounted volume)
skype
No one else uses my MacBook
I don't have any sharing services enabled that I am aware of. In any case no one would be accessing my MacBook from any other networked machine.
Time Machine is enabled and writes to a Netgear NV+
I have a similar problem with my Mac Mini. Can anyone help me analyse what is happening?

Hi there, It's a very common problem. Some people seem to have solved the problem by checking Activity Monitor to see if there are any messages that may help identify if a piece of software is preventing the system from entering a sleep state. I did this and realised my external HD software was preventing the system from sleeping. Now my MBP 15" i5 predictably sleeps and my battery life is extended.

Macbook won't wake from sleep

My macbook won't wake from sleep. I have to power down and restart. I have also noticed that when it is asleep, the sleep indicator light doesn't pulse, it just stays on steady. Could this be a bug in mavericks? I have a Seagate external hard drive that I use for my Time Machine backups that it always connected. But ejecting it before the macbook goes to sleep doesn't seem to solve the problem.
Any advice would be appreciated.

You can access System Logs and other information on the computer's status in Console utility; where there are endless lists of all the processes ongoing in the Mac OS X. There are specific log-out and other automatic items the system will post to such logs.

Such articles are helpful in so much as they also have additional links.
Perhaps the computer is not going to sleep. The system logs can tell this.
Regarding power management, sleep, and other activities, have you read through the article about the System Management Controller to see if any of the items listed there can help? They'd take time to go through the list. And the end item is a reset of the SMC, after reading through and troubleshooting from the list.

A good idea is to make a backup of your content in the computer, to an external hard disk drive, so when or if you end up totally erasing the hard disk drive (to include secure erase one-pass overwrite) and reformat GUID, that an all new system could be installed on there, in part of a larger troubleshooting effort.
Actually, if you have an externally enclosed hard disk drive with its own power supply, (not port power) and then use Carbon Copy Cloner (see Bombich software) to make a bootable clone of your entire system to a large enough external drive capable of booting in OS X, then you could get to the bottom of this issue. While keeping a boot copy of what you already have, because you can run the computer from an external clone.

is macsales; or a place to look to compare real details.
The problem could be based in software, or in hardware. Troubleshooting against either possibility is how to resolve this problem. Some models of earlier MacBook & other intel-based Macs do not really like Mavericks; or perhaps like it less than an earlier system it may have shipped with. The earliest like Snow Leopard best.
Anyway, there is a solution but it won't be a one-liner.
I've done some 40 hour days, troubleshooting issues.
Worst problem for me was buying one w/Applecare.

My macbook won't go to sleep unless I use the Apple icon on the task bar

I have a late 2008 macbook unibody (old i know, but its still kickin)
The computer won't go into sleep mode with the lid closed or if I hit the power button. i have to manually do it with the apple icon in the top of the screen.
The ambient light that blinks while in sleep doesn't light up when I do this either. Its been like this ever since Lion, Mountain Lion and now Mavericks.
I've done a clean install of Maverick on a brand new HDD. No change.
*I have modified the computer since I've owned it.
Upgraded from the OEM 2GB of memory to 4GB which is the max for my model.
It didn't come with the illuminated keyboard so I bought the backlit one and installed.
I also had to swap the motherboard to do this since my original did not have the backlight connector.
**Note the old motherboard also had the same problem with the computer not going into sleep. So I don't believe its a hardware issue.
(yes I plugged everything in and seated everything in a appropriate manner, I build custom PC's for friends all the time so I kind of know what to do and what not to do).
I have checked my sharing preferences and they're all unchecked as this is a fresh install of mavericks.
Everything else is all set to system defaults.
Any suggestions/insight?

Select: Put hard disks to sleep when possible
Then click: Restore Defaults

MacBook won't go to sleep when connected to external monitor

Dear all,
I have a MacBook connected to an external monitor via DVI to HDMI adapter. The MacBook is also connected to the power adapter and to an external aluminium Apple keyboard and a wired Mighty Mouse via USB. I use the computer with the lid closed. The problem is that, even though the system preferences are set to put the computer to sleep after a few minutes of inactivity, it won't go to sleep if it's connected to the external monitor, regardless of whether the monitor is on or off. Is this normal or is there a malfunction? If the latter, any ideas how to solve the problem?

Thank you for your help and I apologise for not having reply earlier, but I was trying and checking your suggestions. What I have done is safe booting my MacBook, and the problem disappeared, so I started tinkering with the login and the preferences. In the end, I replaced the preferences folder using a month-old version in Time Machine. And now, I don't know if my original problem was not external-monitor related or it is just that I have a different problem because, at the moment, the problem is like this:
My MacBook refuses to go to sleep by itself when iTunes (version 9.0.3)is open. However, I can make it go to sleep using the Apple menu, the keyboard or the remote control (pressing and holding the play button).
It doesn't matter if it's connected or not to the external monitor.

but the solution is not there. When iTunes is open, I make sure there is nothing playing or downloading (no song, no podcast). iTunes checks for new episodes of podcasts every hour, and the computer is set to go to sleep after a few minutes of inactivity.

MacBook won't go to sleep

I have issues putting my macbook to sleep in this configuration:
1. lid closed
2. connected to an external LCD monitor (via VGA adaptor)
3. power adaptor attached (100% Charged)
4. external keyboard and mouse (via USB)
Ive tried all the suggestions in the `If your Mac won’t go to sleep` Help file including:
1. “Put computer to sleep when it is inactive for” is not set to Never
2. deselect “Wake for Ethernet network administrator access.”
3. deselect any services you aren’t using (none selected)
My macbook has no issues going to sleep when no cables are attached and I just close the lid.
What happens instead is the screen goes black, I wait for the indicator light on the right to pulse, it doesnt, and my macbook wakes up again.
Any assistance with this issue would be great!

ok - it looks like it completes hibernating and sleeps and then immediately wakes up. I cant tell from the log files what is causing it to wake.
I do find the `network traffic reduction measures in effect` out of the ordinary and AppleTalk starting up and shutting down frequently suspect without researchin further...

MacBook won't go to sleep with Lid opened

I have set the Computer Sleep time to 5 minutes. Its connected to a power source. There are no running tasks and a few apps are loaded in memory (Mail, Safari, iChat, iTunes, Numbers and QT X). No devices are connected. It simply won't go to sleep.
It does when the lid is closed but not otherwise as it should after 5 minutes of inactivity. The Display sleep slider is also set on 5 minutes and that doesn't work either.

I have a 13 inch macbook white, and recently when I go to put it to sleep, a message pops up saying you must restart your computer and it forces me to push the power button to shut it off. Then if I leave it alone to go to sleep on its own, when I come back to it, it won't come back on so I have to manually shut it down again. When I do fully turn the computer back on, it says that the Mac software quit unexpectedly. Does anyone know why it is doing this all of a sudden?

Macbook won't wake from sleep - replaced logic board and batteries already

I have a 13" White Macbook on 10.5.5 that occasionally won't wake from sleep. This will happen with nothing plugged into the Macbook except for the AC adapter. I have done the firmware upgrade, reset the SMC, reinstalled Leopard from the DVDs twice, brought it into Genius and had the ram, sleep switch, and the logic board replaced. There are no bluetooth devices attached to the computer.
I've searched the forums but haven't found a definitive answer yet.

I've experienced the problem as well. I have the new aluminum macbook with all factory specs and no mods, except that I changed it from smart sleep to the original old mac behavior of instant sleep. It is intermittant and with mine, I've noticed that when the screen is open, the computer appears to be completely off, but when I close the computer the light on the front of the computer comes on. The only resolution I've found so far is to hold the power button for 5 seconds for a hard power down and then push it again--everything works fine.
There is indeed a sudden drop sensor, and in fact, it did happen after I accidentally hit the corner of my mac once on a tv while trying to set it down. That could be the answer...we might have to try disabling that because quite honestly, if I drop my mac while its on, I'm going to be more worried about the screen, the case, even the cute little plastic apple than the hard drive (I have backups galore).

Macbook won't download software updates automatically

This may seem like a strange problem (it does to me, at least), but my Macbook is all of a sudden incapable of receiving software updates. I got it on Christmas, downloaded all of the necessary software updates, and then never really concerned myself with whether or not my Macbook was actually downloading new updates automatically, until recently. I tried to go to the Apple menu and click on "Software Update...", but when I do that, I get a message that says, "Software Update can't find the update server. Make sure you're connected to the internet, then try again."
The problem is, I run the recommended Network Diagnostics right after that, and that says that my connection is perfect. I have no trouble connecting to the internet through Mozilla Firefox (which, coincidentally, auto downloaded ITS new update just fine...), and I don't have any strange encryptions on my router (a Linksys WRT54G model), nor have I changed anything at all about my connection since Christmas morning about half a year ago.
I suppose I should let you know that my dad got this Macbook from eBay. OS X had already been installed for a while by the time I got it, so I had a great deal of updates to download (the laptop hadn't been used since the initial setup back when it was bought), and seemed to function perfectly. That is, until I unplugged the power source and found out that I had a dead battery. So I have a relatively new battery in my Macbook. I had the same problem not to long ago.
I did the following steps to fix the problem:
1. Download Smart Sleep preference pane, (install for ALL USERS), and change your computer's sleep mode to SMART SLEEP.
2. Download and install the latest Debug kit straight from Apple here: http://developer.apple.com/hardwaredrivers/download/usbdebug.html
(you may need to agree to terms or whatnot)
3. Once your computer restarts after a successful install of the debug kit, try closing your lid, and make sure you have no USB or other peripherals attached to your MacBook.

Macbook won't go to sleep with lid open

Lately my macbook has stopped going to sleep despite the energy saver settings stating computer sleep is set at 10 minutes. I've tried an SMC reset, but no avail. I've removed my USB 2.0 HDD to see if the issue was potentially related to it, but no changes. I've even tried to recalibrate the battery and it has done nothing for me.
I've really ran out of idea on how to tackle this issue. Any other suggestions?

Interesting. Like I said in the original post, I removed all USB/FW devices from my laptop and still experienced the problem. I typically have a Seagate FreeAgent Go hooked up to my Macbook to store all my multimedia (movies, files, etc). The drive is formatted as NTFS so I can use it on my Windows partition and other Windows boxes. I use Paragon NTFS to allow R/W access to the external drive on OS X.
My sleep situation has been fixed by uninstalling Paragon NTFS. I figured removing the NTFS drive might expose the problem, but it took fully removing all the Paragon disk drivers for my Macbook to return to it's sleep schedule. This is slightly inconvenient but I can find another NTFS driver solution and see what happens.

Macbook won't let me disable automatic login.

I have always had my macbook set to automatically login. Recently, though, I moved and have new roommates. I would like my macbook to require a password before logging in when it is started. I have tried disabling automatic login two different ways:
*System Preferences > Users & Groups > Login Options > Automatic login: Off*
and
*System Preferences > Security & Privacy > General > Disable automatic login*
In both cases I click the little lock in the lower left-hand corner and type in my password before changing the setting. After changing the setting, I click the little lock again so it returns to the locked position. However, every time I shut down or restart, my computer automatically logs in and when I look at the system preferences, they are once again set to *Automatic login: [my account name]* and *Disable automatic login* is unchecked.
What can I do to get the settings to remain changed? I am not super tech-savvy, so any suggestions will be appreciated.

What model year it the Mac you have? If it is a Late 2011 or newer model then you can first reinstall the Original version of OS X that came on it by using the Online Internet Recovery system. Hold down the Command+Option/Alt+r key at startup and hold them down until you see a Spinning Globe in the center of the screen. From the screen that comes up use Disk Utility to Repartition the drive as one partition aand when that is done close DU and Select Reinstall Mac OS X.
If it is older then a late 2011 model then you will need the Original System disks for that Mac. These can be order from Apple for a small charge.

Macbook won't go to sleep when plugged in

Have looked at a few other issues people have had regarding this, and from them tried : Turning off printer sharing. Turning off all share options in the shared folder. And i am STILL having this issue.
When the power cable is not plugged in, it goes to sleep fine. But when it is plugged in, it just keeps running and running when closing the lid or trying to put to sleep.
One user said to help diagnose you can type pmset -g in terminal.
Having done this, i got :

When doing the command ps -ef |grep -e 19 the imposing "19" brought up LOADS of files, ranging from Word-related app files, google chrome.app, HP printer, lots of library folders, etc. i didnt really look that hard but recognised some words from all the gobbledy gook
and ps -ef |grep -e 208 brings up :

Any idea what any of this could mean, and how to fix this issue?

MacBook won't go to sleep, unmounting USB2 disks

I bought my MacBook last september, and have never had any problems with it, until a couple of days ago. When I close the lid, it takes about ten seconds until the apple lights up again and it makes the boot-sound. This goes on and on. I tried to reinstall Leopard and even downgrade to Tiger, but the same thing happend in Tiger too.
I have two external harddrives connected by USB2. I have never had any problems at all with them either until today. When i connect them to the computer, the pops up as they should, but about three-four minutes later they get disconnected and turns off. Just turning them on again dosn't help, I have to unplug the USB-cable and plug it in again and then turn them on again. However, the same thing happens again.
Any ideas?

Go to System Preferences/EnergySaver and click the Sleep tab. If your have your Sleep options for the hard disk to go to sleep at about the same time as the display (screen saver options)... possibly this is what you are seeing?????

MacBook won't wake from sleep. Won't start.

Posting this as an answer to people searching for what I searched for. Now don't do this without doing the SMC reset, etc. first. I have a macbook that my wife let totally run down on the batteries. It went to sleep. She turned it on, and it didn't make it back up before the battery went dead. It was in a state where it would not read the keyboard at all, so all the suggestions from apple to take the battery out, hold the power key down, boot holding various keys, etc. were of no use. Try all of these other things first! I bet this is a one in a million state.
Anyway, since the machine was trapped in a place in the "boot" sequence where it wouldn't read the keyboard, and draining the power didn't help, it just kept indicating sleep and wouldn't start, I was pretty dismayed. Before sending it back to Apple, I figured I had nothing to lose. So, I took out the memory cards. (Again, don't do this if you're not comfortable with the procedure. I had installed this memory, so I was. Plugged in, and tried to power up without any RAM. (Failed, of course.) Unplugged, put RAM back in, and Voila! Happy Mac. Apparently changing the basic hardware configuration ticked off the started sequence enough to realize that something was wrong, so it started over again where it should be.
Hope this helps a desperate person whose wife's mac is in a coma. Funny thing about macs, she was acting like a pet had died. Never got that upset about her gateway.
If there's a question here, it's : Anyone else ever seen anything like this? My guess as to what happened came from reading MAC OSX, a systems approach. Any clever folks out there who want to correct or comment on my diagnosis?
