MacBook won't shut down properly because finder won't respond

Every time I shut my MacBook down it seems just to freeze and the dock and desktop are still visible. I control and clicked on finder and it said it wasn't responding and gave me the option to 'relaunch' it. This doesn't work and I am forced to hold the off button until it goes off completely.
Just wanted to know if something bad was up with my laptop.

Close all windows and quit all applications.
Hold the option key down and click the "Go" menu in the Finder menubar.
Select "Library" from the dropdown, then "Preferences" folder.
Look for this file.
com.apple.finder.plist
Right click on it and select " Move To Trash" from the contextual menu.
Restart the computer.

  • My ipad won't shut down properly

My ipad will not sleep nor shut down properly. When I plug it in it freezes.  Any solutions to this?

First, try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until the screen blacks out or you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
Finally, if the Restore doesn't work, let the battery drain completely.  Then recharge for at least an hour and Restore again.

  • My Mac Mini Won't Shut Down Properly

I recently upgraded to 10.6.2 after buying a mac wireless keyboard and magic mouse. Now I keep getting this problem where the OS won't shut down.
One of the symptoms is that when I move the mouse to the area at the top right of the screen with the clock, volume and wifi icons (is there a name for that?) I just get a spinning beach ball. The clock has stopped too! Also the volume controls from the keyboard don't work any more, even the remote control stops working. I can't shut down or sleep the computer, even 'about my mac' doesn't work.
Other applications seem to work OK and in Activity Monitor I don't see any unresponsive apps.
This hanging doesn't start straight away and two things that have set it off have been using the volume controls and when I tried to press ⌘-space to search for something.
I really don't know where to begin!

Still doing it! I disconnected all the USB peripherals and that was fine for a while, also removed stuff out of the task bar thing that I wasn't using.
Then re-connected the USB hub and it happened again... maybe it's something to do with that or just bad luck...

  • MacBook won't shut down properly.

I've had this MacBook for over a year. About 2 weeks ago, I tried to shut it down as usual. Everything went out as normal, the blue screen appeared with the spinning wheel but this time it stayed there. I left it there for a few minutes but I noticed it would not end so I pressed the power button for a few seconds until everything shut down. Next day I turned it on, everything worked out well, but still did the same thing at shut down (this time I made sure I had closed all apps manually, just in case). Later in the week I worked on it again and this time it shut down normally. Then it did the freeze thing again the next time I shut it down. I checked to see if there were any updates available in case this was the problem. I did not have any problems until yesterday when it, again, ended up in a loop cycle at shut down. Notice it sometimes shuts down normally, other times it "loops".
I am about to do a disk check up to se if all permissions are in order, but I am afraid that if something is wrong & it fixes it, it may mess up Parallels. Last november I had to take the machine back to it's "out of the box" state because Parallels kept acting up & the tecs @ Parallels had already run out of ideas on what could be done to fix it (it kept saying it could not find the disk & crashed, taking everything to it's original settings solved the problem).
So, if anyone could help me out with this shut down issue, I would be very grateful.
    Thanks in advance!

    Thanks for your reply.
I was not using Parallels when this started happening (have not used it lately actually). But I am afraid that repairing disk permissions may mess it up again & I will need it to work smooth when I go back to college.
I've been making sure to exit & close all apps before shut down. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. But I am making a backup at this very moment.

  • My MacBook Pro 15" won't shut down properly.

I am in search of help cause no one seems to know what the problem is. I have a late 2008 unibody 2.4ghz 15" MacBook pro. everything works smoothly and fine the computer runs superb, but when I go to shut it down I get a gray screen and a pinwheel thing and it just keeps spinning. Ive left it doing this for about 8 hours so I know it's not an issue with time. I can only get it to shut down when i hold the power button which I don't like doing. Everything else is in full working order any suggestions?

Sounds like you might need a SMC reset.
I would also try using Disk Utility to do a Disk Repair, as shown in this link, while booted up on your install disk.
You could have some directory corruption. Let us know what errors Disk Utility reports and if DU was able to repair them. Disk Utility's Disk Repair is not perfect and may not find or repair all directory issues. A stronger utility may be required to finish the job.
    After that Repair Permissions.
No need to report Permissions errors....we all get them.

  • Help, MacBook won't shut down properly!!

Hi, just hoping someone can help with the following as my MacBook is not a happy bunny. I recently reformatted my hdd and restored my system using Time machine. This was to allow me to create a new partition so I could run bootcamp. All was fine for a few weeks, buy I have noticed recently that system preferences has become unreliable and fails to load on most occasions, freezing in the process - it shows in the dock, but does not load. I have OSX snow leopard all updates, two user accounts, guest activated. I have repaired disk permissions a number of times - sometimes works for a very limited time, other times not. I have deleted the finder and systempreferences .plist files in both user accounts, emptied trash and restarted, again limited effectiveness. When the sys prefs crashes, i force quit it, then it tends to load fine next time, but 2 mins later its up to its old tricks. On top of this, the Mac is now refusing to shut down - it will get to the spinning wheel phase then nothing, I have to force shutdown by holding the power button.
I've also tried disabling the guest account, but no luck.
Any ideas gratefully received as I'm worried that jts all going crash soon !
    Many thanks
    Rich.

    Many thanks MJ,
I deleted everything you mentioned and sysprefs worked for a while but as soon as I tried opening an application e.g. mail, the first reboot of sysprefs worked fine, but subsequent ones hang. Funny thing is now the power down problem has gone away - it seems to work very quickly - I guess a function of clearing out the caches folder?
Anyway, sysprefs issue remains. Ive reported the fault to apple anonymously (have copy of report if that helps). Here are the console messages during a number of restarts and subsequent attempts to open sys prefs. If you/others need more please let me know (the last line represents me forcing a quit of sysprefs):

  • My MacBook Black won't shut down properly

When I'm shutting down (or restarting) my old, but still very very funtional MacBook Black 2.16GHz, 4GB Ram, 160GB HD, just after turning itself off, it freezes up and displays this warning:
This happens every single time I'm restarting or shutting my computer down...
Any ideas what it could be? How can I fix this?
    Please help...
    Thanx!!

Still doing it! I disconnected all the USB peripherals and that was fine for a while, also removed stuff out of the task bar thing that I wasn't using.
Then re-connected the USB hub and it happened again... maybe it's something to do with that or just bad luck...

  • HT1338 Macbook Pro 10.7.4 won't shut down properly

I'm having issues when either I shut down or reboot. When it tries to shut down, the screen goes white with the pinwheel, but never turns off. I will leave my computer up, just to see if it ever shuts down, but never does. Can you please assist? 2.8 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3

The progress bar IS what you get when doing a Safe Boot. So that is what the system is doing when you are trying to do a normal boot.
How old is your MBP? What year is it?
You have some type of hard drive problem, it would seem.
See if you can boot into the Recovery HD partition. At startup hold down the Command+r key and that should boot to the recovery HD system.
Open Disk Utility and Verify Disk and iof needed Repair Disk and then Verify Permissions and Repair Permissions.
That is IF the system boots to the Recovery HD.

  • My 2011 macbook pro kept shutting down and now it won't turn back on.

I have a mid2011 macbook pro and it kept shutting down randomly and now it won't turn back on. No error messages were showing up when it was turning on.

    Hi, morganfromJamison.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
I understand that you MacBook will no longer turn on.  Here are some troubleshooting steps that I would recommend for this issue.

  • I'm can't open documents in iword, and the program also won't shut down properly.

I have been having trouble with pages for a couple of weeks now.  When I try to shut it down, it won't close.  I've tried force quit, but that doesn't work either.  Then, I can't shut down my computer properly either.  Finally, which seems related to me, I suddenly can't open documents that I've typed into word.  Any suggestions?

Did you try a Force Quit?
Press command + option + esc keys together at the same time.
Wait. Force Quit window will appear.
Select Mail and click the Force Quit button
    Wait. Mail will quit.

  • My Mac Pro won't shut down properly

I recently got a 2010 2.8ghz quad-core Mac Pro.  It has Mountain Lion installed (10.8.2).  For some reason, when I try to shut down, it seems like it shuts down with the display turning off and the fans audibly stopping, but the light on the front of the Mac Pro stays on with a continuous, non-pulsing glow.  During this time, the Mac is essentially unresponsive.  Pushing the button does nothing.  The only option is to hold down the power button until the machine shuts down completely.  I tried searching for this problem, but all the other threads are in regard to situations where the spinning wheel keeps spinning indefinitely.  This is different because the wheel spins, then the computer seems to shut down except for the light staying on.  It goes to sleep just fine.  I tried resetting the PRAM with no luck.  Any suggestions?

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the timestamps of those log messages, which refer to the times when the system was booted. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time when you had the problem. Post the messages logged before the boot, while the system was unresponsive or was failing to shut down. Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the end of the log extract.
Post the log text, please, not a screenshot. If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message. When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into a message.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out by search-and-replace in a text editor before posting.
    Step 2
Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the entire contents of the most recent one, if any. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

  • MSI Live Update 6 won't shut down properly

So, I have two computers each with different MSI boards.  MSI Live Update 6 wasn't recently updated I think last week.  Now I can't shut down windows 7 normally because it is waiting for Live Update to shutdown.  Live update used to shut down automatically on both computers.  So, what do I need to change to the program?

I have exact same problem here. And flobelix's way is not a solution imo. Also there is no support in main msi site for their software. They suggest not use MLU6 in most of other forums. If we couldn't find some support here where sould we find it. The problem is very funny btw. Apparently, MSI engineers never close their computer and they never see that problem or like most msi users, they never use it even once. Just some random updates with random problems.
From now on I will suggest people if they have problem with msi stop using msi products (same solution with flobelix) which makes this topic and also this community useless.
And all this emoticons are old fashioned
    (no offense flobelix )

  • Laptop won't go to sleep mode and shut down properly.

hello,           My name is Atul and i upgraded my laptop hp pavilion 15-p017tu from win 8.1 to win 10 on 29h july. My laptop was working great before the upgrade and before upgrading i updraded ( updated ) all the drivers and windows too.          so, after the upgrade i have been facing the same problem which has been shared by many peple here..i.e win doesn't go to sleep mode. In my case when ever i put the sys to sleep mode, the screen turns off but the power button doesn't blinks and i can't go back to the normal mode by using mouse curser or pressing the power button back. I have to physically shut down the system by pressing the power button for 5 seconds.         Also, my system won't shut down properly and it is the same as the sleep mode probem. I have contacted the customer care of microsoft and hp both and they did some setting changes but the problem keeps coming back. I have also told by the hp care that they will take atleast a month or two to fix this as this may be due to hardware not supporting the current driver so this might take time. They also told me to just downgrade to win 8.1 and after sometime when this poblem is fixed i can again install and upgrade win 10. If any of you guys know how to fix this problem do share it here.      thanks!!

    Hi ,
Thank you for visiting the HP Forums! A great place where you can find solutions for your issues with help from the community!
I came across your post about the Notebook, and wanted to assist you! I have looked into your issue about your HP Pavilion 15 p017tu Notebook and issues with the sleep mode and shut down not working correctly. Go into the Device Manger and go to display adapters. Update the driver. Select the Automatically search for updated drivers.
Here is a link to the HP Support Assistant if you need it. Just download and run the application and it will help with the software and drivers on your system that need updating after Windows 10 upgrades . I hope this helps. Thanks.

  • My iMac (2011) wont shut down properly!!

I have contacted apple's phone support 3 times but it still won't shut down properly.
    1. they asked me to do a pram reset
    2. they asked me to go into the safe boot mode (and it does shut down properly)
    3. they asked me to clear my cache (it shuts down after i cleared it but i have to force shut my computer and wait until i swicth it on again to empty the bin and then it shuts down properly)
    4. they asked me to reinstall my OS(but thats such a hassle and there shldnt be a problem with the OS bcos it shuts down normally on safe boot)
Are there any other solutions to this? It's been happening for the past 3 months... I suspect that it's the third party applications that are causing these problems. I tried reinstalling them but it still won't shut down. (eg, photoshop, filezila, firefox)
    HELLP!!

If you're able to boot, launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
Select the most recent panic log under System Diagnostic Reports. Post the contents — the text, please, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header and body of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don't post "shutdownStall" or "hang" reports.
If you can't boot in the usual way, try a safe boot. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
During startup, you’ll see a progress bar, and then the login screen, which appears even if you normally log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Safe mode is slower than normal, and some things won’t work at all.
Note: If FileVault is enabled under Mac OS X 10.7 or later, you can’t boot in safe mode.

Has anyone seen this before? All help greatly appreciated!

    Hi Sebastian,
Thank you for your quick reply. Here's what I tried:
    1. reset the install as you suggested, and tried running root.sh again. The exact same thing happened.
    2. restored to an openfiler snapshots that were taken right before the failed upgrade. Increased memory on both VMs to 1280M as you suggested. Rebooted the virtual environment and ran the installation again. This time, the root.sh script froze my environment - not enough memory to support this.
    3. restored the openfiler snapshots again. Increased memory on one node (odbn1) to 1500M. Ran the install for a single node cluster. It got past this error.
    Thank you!!!
Also, thanks for the tip on the ntp.init file. That did eliminate the error for ntpd not running during the installation.
