Macintosh HD icon missing / not showing up on desktop
Suddenly my boot drive HD (Macintosh HD) icon is missing. In Volumes I can find an alias of my HD but not on my desktop.
I switched the option for "show HD icons on desktop" off and on in Finder options but boot drive not visible while other volumes visibility is switching fine off and on.
I repaired disk permissions but no change.

Hey everyone! I just updated to 10.5.6 to try to solve an issue I was having with 10.5.5 but to no avail. My desktop folder is has tons of photos and folders in it, but on the actual desktop I am not seeing icons to anything. Any idea why the desktop folder in finder would have items that do not show up on the desktop itself?

Updates never solve individual problems, only system wide and general issues. Problems should always be addressed immediately and no updates should be performed until the system is running properly.

IMO, the desktop is not the best place to store things. It is a unique directory with special properties. Mine is empty.
If you right-click the desktop and select "New Folder" does it appear?
If you see files in the Desktop directory in Finder but they are not visible on the GUI, they may be hidden files.
Right-click one of them in Finder and Get Info. Look at permissions.
You should also run the DU and repair permissions and HD to be sure nothing is basically wrong with the OS.
Create a new user and add some desktop items and see if the desktop items appear. -
USB Drive and iPod do not show up on desktop
Hello,
I put the computer to sleep when I'm going to be away for awhile and overnight. When I come back and wake it, my USB drive does not appear on the desktop. I have to restart the iMac to get it to come back.
Also, when I plug my iPod in, iTunes updates it and then within 10 minutes, the icon does not show on the desktop but I can see the iPod in iTunes.
Any ideas?

BradI did run the hardware test and everything passed.
For about 3 hours last night, everything was working fine. This morning the USB drive icon is there but not the iPod. I think I will try the OS reinstall but not for about a week. I will be out of town all next week and can't get to it before I leave.
Something may have gone wacky while loading some application. A couple of the suspects would be Adobe Lightroom beta 4 or Google Earth. This issue only started within the last 5 days or so and I think those are the only applications I've loaded in that time.
Thanks for the help in eliminating some of the culprits. I think the OS install should fix. If not, it may be time to have Apple take a look. -
Application icon does not show up in iTunes - AdHoc distribution.
I set an icon of size 57 x 57 as the application icon. The icon shows up in the applications list of the iphone. When I bundle it for an adhoc distribution and add it to iTunes, the icon does not show up in the iTunes Application list. But it shows up on the iphone device that I copy to.
Am I missing something?iTunes does not use the icon for display (the icon is only used on the phone itself). In order for iTunes to display the artwork as well, you need to create a 512x512 JPEG file named "iTunesArtwork" (no extension) and copy it into the application bundle (note that you will have to build the application again after this so that the code signature will sign the additional file as well).
This file should be same (other than the name) you load up to iTunesConnect as the 512x512 artwork.

I installed acrobat 7.0 professional but an Icon does not show up on my computer desktop to enable me to log in to Acrobat....help me!!!!
What OS? Modern OSs will not support Acrobat 7.

The Airplay icon does not show on my Mac Pro, regardless that it is clicked on display. How can I do to see the Airplay Icon in order to connect my apple TV with my Mac Pro?
To check your model go to About This Mac (by clicking on the Apple icon, top left) and then select more info. If you wish to use mirroring you will need one from 2011 or later running OSX 10.8 or later. The alternative would be to use 3rd party software like Airparrot.

i have a macbook pro (almost positive that its a 2010 version) and i got mountain lion. The BIGGEST AND MAIN REASON i bought mountain lion was so that i can do airplay, allowing me to mirror image what is on my mac to my Apple TV. my whole computer is updated as far as the displays and newer features but the small airplay icon will not show up on the top of my screen. therefore, not allowing me to mirror image what is on my mac to my tv... it is connected to the same wifi as my apple tv. idk what to do. could it be because my macbook pro is a 2010? desprately looking for help...please help me with this issue

I'm on Windows 7 64 bit. iTunes 10.7 And I have a solution:
If found a thread about IPv6.
I followed the same directions on Windows 7 64 bit and it worked.
Disable IPv6 on _all_ of your IP ethernet adapters.
That includes Virtual Machines (VMWare... yes those too), including IPv6 for wireless.
Close iTunes. Start iTunes. Works. Airplay Icon is back.
It looks like All of the AirPlay devices may have to be re-setup. At the very least rebooted.
I found that I had to clompletely erase my DHCP addresses from my (non Apple) router.. and that fixed it. Finally.

The message icon is not showing in the drop screen of my photos where it says do you want to email, message, assign, use as waller paper etc. it used to show before and now it's not there how can I get it back?
Did this back along to mine. Plug it into itunes on your pc (or Mac) and click on the ipod icon on the left hand side. When the device options come up on the main screen, click on restore. Follow the steps and it should restore to factory settings. If you had icloud activated on the ipod all previous purchases should be in the cloud and ready to download onto the ipod afte rit has been restored to factory settings, otherwise you'll have to download them all again. Hope it helped.

AirPlay icon is not showing up on either of my ipads.
I just got Apple TV today. Was excited to use airplay and the icon does not show up on either of my iPads. I have looked through all of the troubleshooting. Everything is wirelessly connected to my same home Internet. All devices are updated, I rebooted both iPads and the router. It will work on iTunes on my desktop but not the iPads. I even turned off the fiirewall. I am super frustrated at this point for spending all of this money and it doesn't work!! Please help me if you can!!
Have you activated restrictions for the app in Settings/General/Restrictions?

My IPad 2, IPhone 3GS ans iPod no longer work with apple TV, I have 2 apple TV in my house and for he last 3 weeks the iPod was the only one we could use for appleTV now none of them works, the apple TV icon does not show up any more. Re-started everything.

RESPONSES:
1) When I set up my iMac, I did not transfer any data directly from my windows PC. I simply used the same iTunes login and account. I have access to all of the files via the "Purchased" section of the iTunes store. If I click "Download Previous Purchases" text, I can download ALL of the purchases I have ever made.
2) I have the Apple TV 2, so good news, question answered. I thought maybe it was the Apple TV 1, but it is the Black model, so bam. Good response for you. Well the whole damned reply is an awesome response, just pointing out that one piece of awesome. I stated that it was an Apple TV 2, and yet you were still good enough to figure I could be mistaken, and provide me with knowleedge just incase.
QUESTIONS:
3) So can my iMac not stream the data directly from itunes, without download? Apple TV can, but perhaps that is something among many things that maker it unique, and awesome.

I work in the computer support section for the Military. The only problem is we use Windows , lol. Well that and i've been gone for nearly 6 months on recover. I go back next month though I hope. Hard Drive Icon Not Showing Up on Desktop
Hey folks, this might be a very very noobish question, but I guess I'm fairly new to OSX...
My Hard Disk Drive icon is not showing up on my desktop for some reason...if I open a New Finder Window, I can't see it on the upper left hand quadrant in columnar view, but I can get to all the shortcut folders in the lower left hand quadrant (Applications, Documents, Movies, etc.), but can't navigate to the root directory unless I use Terminal (yup, I'm root user).
When I go into Disk Utility (/Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.app) then I can see the drive itself as well as the Windows partition I created for Bootcamp purposes. I tried Verify Drive and Verify Permissions to see if there were some weird problems with the drive itself but both came back perfect, and still no HDD icon on the desktop.
I have a feeling it's just some weird setting I may have inadvertently tweaked, so any feedback, advice, or information on how to get it back would be very welcome and appreciated. In case it's any help, here is the HDD Information from Get Info:

If I drop down the "New Finder windows open:" menu, I see "Home", "Documents", "Computer", "iDisk" (greyed out), and "Untitled", which is my Windows partition.
