Macmini Server for Mentoring program

I am in the development stages of setting up a mentoring program. I have been looking at the macmini server as an option but have a some questions in regards of ease of use versus a linux setup.
I will be using apple computers along with ipad for my coordinators.
I see that I can host a web site, but will it be able to host a vbulletin forum as well?
I am pretty proficient when it comes to software, but have not really messed around with linux much. tried ubuntu and liked it but it seems odd coming from mac osx and windows. How user friendly is SL server edition campared to Ubuntu server in regards to setup, maintaining and management. I do not have the budget to have an IT person on staff.
The server will primary be used to host website, forum, and file sharing. I like the integration of ical and the mail server. Any advise and suggestions appreciated.

I've never setup a Ubuntu server but a Mac mini server is very simple, use your 90 days of free phone support as much as you can. Or see what that new Joint Venture thing is that they launched the other day.
The Web Server is good and the Mail and iCal integration I can't remember if a Forum comes as one of the easy setup site options so thats a bit more work under the hood.
The Applecare gives you phone support for a very good price cant see you getting an option like that on Linux, both have good online forums for assistance as well.
The applecare doesn't cover command line though just GUI which probably means a vbulletin install would not be covered it you ran into trouble (so online forums for that one).
For the price and its abilities IMO you'd be mad not to go with the Mini, especially with other macs and ipads.

  • Use MacMini server for windows apps and save for windows files ?

My question : Office equiped mixed computers , aslo Windows and Mac,
Could we use MacMini server for both machines, working by windows apps and / or to save and work with windows files on MacMini server  and with Mac as well?
We woud use it for normal office work and get it by internet from other places as well
windows apps: merchandising, invoice, word, excel, pictures editing, Outlook Express + the Mac apps
    thnx ,
    MACIren

In general what you can do is: in OS X, use Windows in virtualization (aka emulation), as a "virtual machine" with VMWare Fusion, Parallels, or Oracle VM Virtual box.
That way you have both operating system open side by side without having to reboot into one or the other operating system.
Not sure whether you need a Mac Mini Server per se to do that, I do that with my MacBook Pro for instance. But the server would help since it has a quad-core CPU (more cores that you can dedicate to the virtual macine), and you can put the virtual machine on the second harddrive for better disk access performance. Was there some particular reason you were thinking of the Mini Server -- do you want to use server side Windows apps?
Again I have that setup on my MacBook Pro using VMWare Fusion with an XP virtual machine. In the Windows, I only use Office 2003 and some company apps that are Windows only. With Fusion (and I'm sure the other apps can do it as well) you can set a "shared" folder so both Windows and Lion will see the contents of it for reading and writing. I believe with Fusion you can also do your entire Home directory, but I prefer to limit it to a single shared "work" folder.

  • Which attached storage you are using for your Macmini Server?

    Hi all,
I am very confusing to choose a right attached storage for my small office use - with my Macmini server - for storage shared files, documents...
My intend is to select one with:
    - Firewire 800 connection (2 is best)
    - 2 internal disks so I can make RAID 1
    - Do not need any manual operating like turn on, turn off when power Mac down, up or electricity down, up
    - Quiet
    - Not make a lot of heat
I read many review of product as Buffalo, WD, Drobo, Promiss... but I still not quite convince before make an order. Each products has some weak points (as I understood through review):
    - Promiss: can not power on it self after electricity down and back, so this means we need a person to manually turn it on after that.
    - Drobo: noisy and bad quality?
    - WD: has some problem to maintain mount (through firewire) when reboot macmini?
    - Buffalo: I preffered this one but it do not have Firewire, only USB 2.0 and I afraid this is not enough for my sharing files purpose.
So please share you experience and help me to choose the best, thanks!

    Thanks!
I just bought 2 Buffalo box (single disk), I will try to buy Drobo box for a RAID soon!
BTW, do you have problem when restart server when use firewire connection?

here is where the big problem is and that is how do I set up a server at home for it, as the college has a server for their oracle program. Without Oracle running i cannot really do my assignment two of using Oracle itself to produce a database through the program.
I want to ask would the Net manager allow me to set up and test the server this way? note that i have followed the instructions of my lecture handsouts taht he put on blackboard, the thing is taht he has not yet shown me how to set it up and get it to run? so I was thinking do any of you people know how to do this?
id b great if you could post some instructions ro guidlalines or email me the screen dumps of how i can clearly set up a server for my program so i can log in with a username and passworld and connect string @ home.

    Bo,
If you have the means, I would recommend placing spatial indexes on a separate physical device from data and other indexes. This is an extension of the data separate from indexes rule of thumb.

  • I want to use a headless MacMini Server as a webhost for four sites.

I am considering trying the MacMini server to use as a webhost. I have a comcast business account with 5 IP's. It's an extreme connection speed package.
    My sites would be:
    2 Joomla! CMS sites,
    1 WordpressMU Site,
    1 SugarCRM site.
I am looking for something an idiot could install and manage. I'm using a hosting company right now, but would like more control of my OS.
I don't like the fact that Apple doesn't include phpMyAdmin as a standard package with Snow leopard.
I installed the above scripts on my macbook pro through MAMP and MAMP Pro, but all I can get is local access. The public cannot access my sites folder (regular snow leopard). So, I was told that I need snow leopard server to accomplish what I want to do. Can anyone help me figure out what I need, and how it's done?
    Walt

It does sound like a simple port forwarding thing.
Do take care with that Comcast account. If my experience is any indication you will not get the advertised speed. If you read the agreement it is only guaranteed for the first few kilobytes or so of any transmission and then backs down to normal speeds afterward.
Comcast will also do you a "favor" and turn the firewall on by default in the supplied modem/router. You have to call them and have them turn it off if it interferes with anything.

  • Considering a Dell U2711 for MacMini Server

    Hi All,
I am planning to buy a MacMini Server to go with my Dell U2711 Display.
I am a bit confused regarding the means of connecting the Display to MacMini for running at 2560 x 1440 resolution.
Apple tells on MacMini specifications page, that output through HDMI is limited to 1920-by-1200.
That said, I am left with the "Thunderbolt" way to achive the native resolution of 2560 x 1440, right?
So, what cable should I use to connect the display through thunderbolt port?
Some articles suggest using the so called "Mini DisplayPort to Dual Link DVI" Cable to do that, but then isn't is a misleading naming for a thunderbolt cable?
I would expect something like a "Thunderbolt to Dual Link DVI" cable.
    Thanks!

Iam buying this model, have tou tried 1080p videos external monitors anf full hd flash videos from vimeo?
    please let me know

Just though I should fill in a bit here, as I have now bought this laptop and running Arch 64bit on it. So if any other users are considering this laptop, here are a few lines about it:
I have it up and running with LUKS disk encryption, everything works fine so far. I'm running XFCE with just a minor problem that the bottom panel is kinda blinking 3 or 4 times right after boot. Havn't tested webcam nor bluetooth, but sound and everything else seems to work fine.
Two of my biggest problems were to get the wifi up and running and to get an acceptable performance when viewing videos in full screen. As for the wifi; just me not understanding that I needed a kernel module AND a firmware.. (If someone wants to fill me in on why we need a firmware AND a kernel module/ driver, I'd be glad.) I installed the iwlwifi-5000-ucode without knowing I also needed the iwlagn module too. After that was fixed, I am now using network manager with no problems.
I have also had some problem with the Radeon 3670. The performance was bad in full screen videos when I used the xf86-video-radeonhd. (I followed arch wiki). It didn't help to use vide-ati neither, and no settings in the xorg.conf did fix my problem. I also noticed that DRI was failing in xorg.log. After alot of trying I decided to try the git-versions which are found in the AUR. I'm happy to say that I can now watch 720 (the only video resolution I have tried yet) with acceptable quality
All in all, I'm quite happy with the computer so far. A bit warm maybe. Oh,  and the screen (full HD version) is SOO nice :-)

  • Old school with CS2.  Haven't used in a while and am unable to use the program as it says my serial number is invalid. Customer service tells me the server for CS2 has been shut down.  Then they sent me here for help.  Does anyone have any advice?

I don't have a clue what I am doing with this.  Here is my discussion with Customer Service:
Naresh: Hello! Welcome to Adobe Customer Service.
    Naresh: Hi Mary.
Naresh: I understand you have been getting invalid serial number, am I right?
    Mary Vance: Hi
    Mary Vance: yes
Naresh: Please provide me with the serial number, Mary.
Mary Vance: I provided my serial number here
Naresh: Thank you for the serial number.
Naresh: Please allow me 2-3 minutes while I check your serial number.
    Mary Vance: no problem
    Naresh: Thank you.
Naresh: Thank you for being online.
Naresh: I would like to inform you that the server for CS2 products have been shut down by adobe since then you are not able to install the product.
Naresh: However, I will provide you the link to download CS2 application. Please visit the following link.
Mary Vance: will this allow me to reinstall Photoshop?
    Naresh: Yes, Mary.
Mary Vance: ok...what is that link?
Naresh: Please clcik here to download.
Mary Vance: thank you....trying it now

Naresh: Were you able to view the download link, Mary?
Mary Vance: what file in that download is supposed to help me?
Mary Vance: the first and 3rd link were the same
Mary Vance: when trying to load from my software, I get the message saying my serial number is not valid. All I need is a serial number that works. Is that going to be possible?
Naresh: Mary, Adobe has disabled the activation server for CS2 applications, including Acrobat 7 and Audition 3, because of a technical issue.
Naresh: So you will have to download the software from the above link.
Naresh: May I know in what OS you are trying to install the software?
Mary Vance: the link sends me to a CS2 help package
    Mary Vance: windows 7
Naresh: I am sorry you will not be able to install the CS2 application on Windows 7 since it does not support CS2 version.
Mary Vance: I have had on here for a few years...why all of a sudden would it not work? Illustrator is fine.
    Naresh: Okay.
Naresh: You can try downloading the software.
Mary Vance: was the original link that you sent me suppose to allow me to download Photoshop?
Mary Vance: I did try and got the message that the serial number is invalid. Is there any way to get around this or should I throw it away?
Naresh: May I know whether you uninstalled the product.
    Naresh: ?
Mary Vance: I did uninstall Photoshop only. Then I tried reinstalling Photoshop only and got the message about the serial number.
Naresh: I check and see that it seems to be a technical issue, I request you to please post your query to the forums so that you will get the resolution from our expertise and I'll provide you the link to visit the forums.
Naresh: Please click here to visit the forums.
Mary Vance: I guess I will try that.
    Naresh: Yes, please.
Naresh: Is there anything else I can help you with?
Mary Vance: I don't see where you helped me with this yet, so I guess not!
Naresh: I am sorry for the inconvenience.
Naresh: Thank you for contacting Adobe.  We are available 7 days a week, 24 hours a day. Goodbye!
    Any help would be appreciated.

CS2 is very old and reached its "end of life" a while back.  So probably won't run on modern operating systems.  If you can still run it, you'll need to uninstall what you have and re-install with the download link below to activate it.

As I cant get the server to start up automaticly I was wondering if I can get the automator to start it up for me after a restart of the mac?

  • Multiple domains and multiple IPs in the same MacMini Server

I am sure that this topic has been faced already but I cannot find enough information to really dig into a solution.
I have a macmini server with two IPs let say x.x.x.12 and x.x.x.13 .
The server is set up on the first IP. It has his primary zone, machine record, mail aslias and www alias.
Lets call the server domain server.domain1.com
Everything works fine I have a couple of local users and a couple of LDAP users. Just to test the machine setup.
I can send and receive emails using any of the users as [email protected]
Now I would like to have another domain, domain2.com in the same server .
The final goal is to have users under different domains. They have their own email box, calendar, etc.
It will be preferable that I can share the same username with different domains. But I can live without that option.
My first test was to have the second domain called server.domain2.com using the second IP. x.x.x.13 .
For that I created another Primary Zone with domain2.com as machine record of x.x.x.13 . To use the second IP I simply create another Ethernet interface on the macmini.
In the Mail -> Advance settings I added the host aliases as well as virtual hosting domains for domains2.com.
With this setting I can send emails as [email protected] or [email protected] but when I replay to their messages I get a "Relay access denied" error from server.domain1.com .
I also tryed another domain pointing to x.x.x.12, the same as server.domain1.com . I did not create any extra Primary Zone but the local host aliases and the virtual hosting domains.
Same issue. I can send but I get a "Relay access " error.
As you might notice I am a novice on servers settings. I just try to recreate a similar environment common to Virtual Hosting providers for my own website playground but I cannot cut through this email configuration obstacle.
Any significant meaning that can be leading me to learn how to do it will be very very appreciated . (beside lynda, com tutorials that I followed already but do not mention multiple domains for mails).
    Thanks

the problem I try to solve is to manage multiple domains in one MacMini Server.
    Having two IPs is secondary.
I would like that each domains has his own users with emails, iCals, Wiki and web sites.
The main problem is having emails to work for any additional domain beside the default one on the machine IP.
I also got an additional IP address to be used on the same server hoping that it make things easier but apparently is making things more difficult.

  • Problem with set-up of a macmini server with airport

    Dear readers
Last week I took the bolt step to buy a macmini with OS 10.6 server to set-up a server at home for al kinds of reasons including the claim that it should be easy. Well I am still struggling but making progress in discovering how things work. To be honest this is part of the fun and one of the other reasons to buy the systems. There is one problem I hope somebody can help me with. In the getting started guide a set-up with an airport between the server and the router of the internet provider is promoted. The router is the DNS server, the airport the DHCP server for the local network. This is what I like to do as the macmini has only one Ethernet port and other configurations are not possible without making changes in the hardware configuration. The network service documentation seems to me not supporting this set-up. It considers the server to be used as DHCP server and DNS server where the airport is only used as wifi hub. Also I had problems with the initial set-up that gives the option to include the airport in the configuration and should set-up everything automatically. Halfway during the automatic set-up process at the end of the configuration the airport was reset causing the set-up process to fall over. I used the remote set-up process as only this process asks for the airport connection.
I have not figured out how to set-up the DNS to get access to the server from outside . My provider is revering to a site dyndns.com but I have not checked this.
Does anybody have experience with the configuration I am working on. Did I miss something in the set-up or the documentation, especially related to the DNS setup including using dyndns.com and the DHCP set-up.
    Thanks for your advice.

    The first problem is DNS.
Your router is not a DNS server. When you ask your router to resolve names it is going out to the DNS servers specified by you (or your ISP). So, unless it can find your domain out there on the internet, a client will not be able to resolve your server's name. You have to have a DNS server you can talk to that has a record of your server.
    So you need to:
    1. Setup DNS on the server
    2. Setup DNS on another machine/server
Here is what I would recommend:
    1. Setup DNS on your Mini
    2. Add the IP of your Mini as the DNS server for your clients.
    3. Keep your Airport as the DHCP server
Page 19 is assuming you have asked your ISP to add a DNS record for your domain. If you have not done that, nothing will be able to find your server.
As far as dyndns, you could use them as a DNS server for external access. You setup an account, add your external IP for the address you setup with them and that is pretty much it. You can run the updater on your server which will track your IP and update it in the event you have a dynamic IP and it changes.

  • Using BootCamp on 2010 MacMini Server

Before the putdown for misusing a Server, please listen. I bought the server for it's hardware, not to use as a server.
I have posted the following on another thread I started in "Using Your Mac Mini" but get no response. I am hoping those better acquainted with the Server might know the answers I am after.
To Quote my own thread: "I would like to get input from people having ideas on using BootCamp Assistant on the 2010 Mini Server to install Windows-XP to the unused second harddisk. I copied BootCamp Assistant from my 2009 MacMini Client computer to the 2010 Server and it seems to be a free standing application. It did format disk 2 for Windows, but apparently Fat16 because the Windows installer wants to reformat to NTFS. Windows installer shows two disk0 to choose from, both showing as Master Boot Record. It doesn't show the 1st disk which has the Server Operating System installed on it. I don't understand why it is showing two disk0 when there is just one disk formatted for Windows showing in Disk Utility.
One of the shown disk0 is just one 500gig partition, and the other is showing a 200mb first partition followed by a second 500gig partition. both show as Master Boot Record.
Also when Bootcamp Assistant formated the 2nd harddisk did it install the necessary files into root to boot the Windows formatted harddisk?
Anybody have any ideas on that? "
    Thanks.

You're centrally looking for Microsoft Windows help, and the Apple Server Forums probably aren't the best spot for that knowledge. Consider posting this in a Microsoft forum, and looking for help booting Windows XP on an EFI box.
To get a Boot Camp configuration available on your Mac Mini Server hardware, reformat the disk and load Mac OS X client on the box, or use a virtual machine to guest the Windows platform under Mac OS X or Mac OS X Server. That'll get you closer to where you want to go today.
It's been a while since I have last checked this (and I moved off of Windows some years ago), but Windows XP didn't know from EFI, and expected BIOS. And part of the Boot Camp stuff and what various VMs will get you is a BIOS-like layer.
Or you might try something of a more recent vintage, like Windows 7, which did reportedly have some support for EFI available.
But it'd be best to ask Microsoft about Microsoft. And see if XP can even do EFI. And I'd expect to see FAT32 (technically FAT28, last I checked) or NTFS for a 500 GB drive.

  • Setting up a Mac OS 10.6 Server for the first time

I'm new to servers, and I would like to set up a Mac Mini Server for my network. There would be 3 Windows clients running Vista Home Premium and 2 Mac OS 10.5 clients. I want to be able to log-in on any computer to an account from the server. Then I would like to have the server storing all of the files from all of the accounts. Also, I would like to be able to access these files from over the internet (I have a static IP address on my router). Also, I would like to host a website (I have a domain name through GoDaddy). How do I do all of those things? Also, do I need to upgrade to Windows Professional (Either Windows 7 or Vista)?
I'm really new to this, so please explain this in great detail. Thank you.

For file sharing, on the Mini, you just need to go to System Preferences -> Sharing and enable file sharing. You'll also want to create whatever accounts on the Mini that you want people to be able to log in with, that'll be in System Preferences -> Accounts.
I don't have a lot of experience with Windows and Snow Leopard (much less Mac OS X Server), but at my wife's small business, they have a Mini running Tiger, and none of the Vista machines were able to connect to it. After some digging, I discovered Microsoft had disabled something critical to connecting to Macs in this way, and with Home Premium, you can't access that setting without some arcane hackery. Here's how you do it, if it turns out to still be needed:
To set a Vista computer to access a Mac server:
Go to the Start menu and go to All Programs -> Accessories -> Run
    Type "Regedit.exe" and press return
    Go to HKEYLOCALMACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa
Select Lsa, then choose Edit -> New -> Key
Type "DWORD" (without quotes) as the name in the list
Double-click the text "(Default)" in the right-hand pane
Enter "1" (without quotes) as the value and press OK
Quit Regedit and restart the machine
Log in to the remote Mac using "ip_address\username" as the user name
As to hosting your own web server... I wouldn't advise that, unless it's purely for internal use and not something aimed at potential customers. You don't want the hassle of being on-call 24-7 to restart the server if something goes wrong, and what will you do if the hard drive dies and has to be replaced? Let someone else deal with those issues. (Of course, GoDaddy isn't known for their reliability... if ensuring the server is up and running 99.9% of the time, you will probably want to go with a more respected company, like [pair Networks|http://promote.pair.com/direct.pl?reedcorner.net+134126].*)
\* Note that clicking this link may give me compensation... if you wish to avoid that, just Google them.

  • Can I input MacMini server thunderbolt video into IMac minidvi port?

I have a new MacMini server with Thunderbolt video output, and a mid 2010 27" IMac with minidvi external video input.
I have used the IMac as a monitor for my Mac Pro with good results for over a year.
My understanding from the Apple web site is that Thunderbolt video will drive a current model 27" LED Cinema display with minidvi input, so long as the monitor is the last item in the thunderbolt chain.
I have been unable to get the thunderbolt video from my Mac Mini to drive the minidvi external video input on my IMac.
Am I doing something wrong?  The monitor is the last (and only) item from the thunderbolt output on the MacMini server.
I continue to struggle with the disparate apple video standards, but need the ability to occasionally use the IMac in its external monitor mode, as opposed to remoting in to the MacMini server across the network.
    Any help appreciated.

    My Bad...
MiniDisplayPort is required, and this is what I have.
I believe that I finally solved the problem after getting through to a tier 2 Apple tech.
It does work, but there are several caveats:
    1.  Both machines are required to be on before connecting them.
    2.  This mode will support Windows 7 in boot camp, but you are required to connect the two devices in OSX, be certain the video is displayed on the monitor which is in Target Display mode, and then reboot the source machine to boot camp.
    3.  The MiniDisplayPort is the required cable, even though the source machine might use thunderbolt.
    Thanks....
