MacPro for work and play ?

I'm looking to get a MacPro and while I think I'm on the right track I'm not certain and would appreciate any advice.
I need it for :
1/ Work - Windows based trading software (tradeStation, esignal) + Brokerage software + Browser open (occasionally skype as well) + dual monitors in use.
2/ Daily general computing - surfing the net, amateur photography, music, email, etc..
3/ Gaming.
I plan in using VMware or Parallels (not sure which one) while working, OS X for the daily stuff and Boot Camp while gaming.
I should be looking at a Quad-Core 2.93 and not the 8-Core one, right ?
I should get minimum Ram and upgrade with OWC, right ?
I should just stick with the 4870 for now, right ?
Any reason at all to get the 8 core ?
Thanks in advance.

For what you need one of these should do nicely,

, or even a MacBook Pro. http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/shopmac/family/macbookpro?mco=Nzk2MDUyNQ

Hi, I have a question about iCloud. I have an ipod 4th generation and im getting a 5th generation. i have lots of games such as subway surfers and temple run 2. I worked and played really hard on earning stuff and have also made in app purchases. Does iCloud save that kind of stuff?

    See:

However, not all in-app purchases will transfer to another device. For which ones ill not see:

  • When I attg which had working and played properly, the popup occurs"This copy of iTunes is corrupted or is not installed correctly. Please reinstall iTunes."

When I attempt to open an iTunes MP3 fie, song or audio recording which had been working and playing properly for a couple of years, the popup occurred, "This copy of iTunes is corrupted or is not installed correctly. Please reinstall iTunes." How do I access and use again these sound and video files without losing them or any other files, documents? I am not a computer wizard!

    It's a real message.
Let's try a repair install of iTunes.
    Restart the PC first.
If you're using Vista or 7, now head into your Uninstall a program control panel, select "iTunes" and then click "Repair".
If you're using XP, head into your Add or Remove Programs control panel, select "iTunes", and click "Change". Select "Repair" and click "Next" as per the following screenshot:
Can you launch your iTunes now?

  • Is anyone else having email problems such as apps exiting in the middle of an email? It may be a wireless issue. I use First Class for work and yahoo email for personal. I will be in the middle of typing a long email and the app just quits, all data lost.

Have you tried restarting or resetting your iPad?
Restart: Press On/Off button until the Slide to Power Off slider appears, select Slide to Power Off and, after the iPad shuts down, then press the On/Off button until the Apple logo appears.
Reset: Press the Home and On/Off buttons at the same time and hold them until the Apple logo appears (about 10 seconds). Ignore the "Slide to power off"

You can install a portable Firefox (ESR) version to access websites that do not work with the current Firefox release.

  • I have two time capsules, one for work and one for home, how do I set up the work time capsule to only back up my work files?

I have two time capsules, one for work and one for home, how do I set up the work time capsule to only back up my work files?  Also, how do I add co-workers to my work time capsule and wife to my home time capsule?  Thank you!

You cannot have two different TC setups.. at least until Mountain Lion.. it did introduce some changes but I am not sure if you can setup two different configurations for TM.. you can use two different devices to back up to. I doubt this will help you.
You might be better using a real backup software.. superduper, CCC, chronosync etc.
The TC by default is available to any Mac in the network to do backups. TM will sort itself out and put each computer on a different backup. These are kept in separate sparsebundles.. so that is all fine.

I have an iMac for work and I am leaving the company. How do I clear the computer so that my soon to be former company is unable to see my personal information Ie. - internet, contacts, etc...

Follow these instructions step by step to prepare a Mac for sale:
Step One - Back up your data:
           A. If you have any Virtual PCs shut them down. They cannot be in their "fast saved" state. They must be shut down from inside Windows.
           B. Clone to an external drive using using Carbon Copy Cloner.
              1. Open Carbon Copy Cloner.
              2. Select the Source volume from the Select a source drop down menu on the left side.
              3. Select the Destination volume from the Select a destination drop down menu on the right
                  side.
              4. Click on the Clone button. If you are prompted about creating a clone of the Recovery HD be
                  sure to opt for that.
Destination means a freshly erased external backup drive. Source means the internal
                   startup drive.
Step Two - Prepare the machine for the new buyer:
              1. De-authorize the computer in iTunes! De-authorize both iTunes and Audible accounts.
2, Remove any Open Firmware passwords or Firmware passwords.
              3. Turn the brightness full up and volume nearly so.
              4. Turn off File Vault, if enabled.
              5. Disable iCloud, if enabled: See.What to do with iCloud before selling your computer
Step Three - Install a fresh OS:
         A. Snow Leopard and earlier versions of OS X
              1. Insert the original OS X install CD/DVD that came with your computer.
              2. Restart the computer while holding down the C key to boot from the CD/DVD.
              3. Select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu; repartition and reformat the internal hard drive.
Optionally, click on the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass.
              4. Install OS X.
              5. Upon completion DO NOT restart the computer.
              6. Shutdown the computer.
         B. Lion and Mountain Lion (if pre-installed on the computer at purchase*)
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because
it is three times faster than wireless.
              1. Restart the computer while holding down the COMMAND and R keys until the Mac OS X
                  Utilities window appears.
              2. Select Disk Utility from the Mac OS X Utilities window and click on the Continue button.
              3. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the left side list. Click
on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
              4. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on the Security button
and set the Zero Data option to one-pass.
              5. Click on the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
              6. Quit DU and return to the Mac OS X Utilities window.
              7. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button.
              8. Upon completion shutdown the computer.
*If your computer came with Lion or Mountain Lion pre-installed then you are entitled to transfer your license once. If you purchased Lion or Mountain Lion from the App Store then you cannot transfer your license to another party. In the case of the latter you should install the original version of OS X that came with your computer. You need to repartition the hard drive as well as reformat it; this will assure that the Recovery HD partition is removed. See Step Three above. You may verify these requirements by reviewing your OS X Software License.

I have a macbook pro I use for work and iMac at home. What is best way to manage my files? Use iCloud? Dock my laptop when I come home? Appreciate any suggesitons

That depends on what kind of "files" you're talking about and what your employer's policy is on using cloud storage.
I found dropbox and/or OneDrive work very well for keeping documents in sync between multiple machines.

All ISP-provided equipment is junk. You could get a decent router and connect it to the Verizon router in bridge mode. It should cost about $ 30.

  • I just sold my iPhone 4s after doing a reset and deleting data and settings. Is there anyway the buyer can see any of my old photos, texts, or data? I have confidential info for work and family photos and freaked out that they can be found somehow.

No, but if the answer was yes it's a little late to start getting freaked out about it.

  • I'm on an iMac for work and I'm having network/user account issues?

I'm on an iMac for work and have my own user account.  I usually shut down the mac at the end of the day.  Recently, in the morning its started to not let me login at all.  When I enter the *correct* password, the box does the shakey thing and not let me in.  The IT people here are primarily PC, but they've discovered if I unplug the network cable for a couple seconds and plug it back in, it will then accept my password and let me in.  It only happened once in awhile, now it happens every time I log off and try to log back onto my user account.  What is causing this and why do I need to constantly unplug and replug the network cable?

Can I have two versions of firefox? i.e. one for work and one for home use. I use Windows xp
I would like to start fresh with a new firefox for my work only so I can keep my work related bookmarks etc separate from my at home browsing.

Yes - are you wanting to run 2 profiles on the same machine? See https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Managing-profiles on how to create a new profile. You then just choose which profile you want to use each time you open Firefox.
