Mail all moans

Just halfway through typing my question when it all disappeared, so, here it is again. I have the pleasure of owning an Intel iMac (at least, I think it's pleasure).
Apart from it crashing once, with a disc stuck in it and loosing it's root directory nothing unusual has appeared that I haven't been able to fix --- until that is --- "MAIL"!!!.
The problem is, when I type a new email I type the title in the "Subject" field and there it appears, as I typed it, in English, exactly the same as the keys I pressed on the keyboard. However, when I start to type the message in the message field the message starts to appear as a load of rubbish characters that look a bit like machine code. This can make some of my emails more interesting than they usually are when they get to the person receiving it. The strange thing is, provided I can remember where I am on the keyboard the email message comes out ok when it is received. I can't find anyway to get round this and it doesn't happen when I send emails using "Entourage" on the same iMac or when I use Mail on my G4 iBook. - Suggestions would be useful

This is probably a font issue:
Font Management in Mac OS X Tiger and Panther
Font Book (included with Mac OS X) can be used to validate fonts and resolve duplicates.
Get rid of Helvetica Fractions and Times Phonetic if you have any of those fonts installed.
A simple troubleshooting procedure for this kind of problems is to start up in Safe Mode -- see Undoing Font Book.
Read the following article for general troubleshooting and cache-cleaning procedures:
Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption
In particular, be sure to verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), and to read this as well:
Side effects of System cache cleaning
In addition to the cache-cleaning utilities mentioned there, you may also consider OnyX or Cache Out X, which are free, although for this particular problem Font Finagler is probably the most appropriate.

  • When I open Mail, all accounts are offline.  It takes time to get them back online.  This is an on-going problem that has been chronic and it has finally gotten me "inspired" to ask the Community

When I open Mail, all accounts appear offline.  I have to get back "online" before mail is delivered or sent.  Hassle.  Any Ideas??

I was having this same issue all week. I'm also using 10.8.5 It was driving me crazy. I think I found a solution. I downloaded and installed the latest security update from Apple in the App Store. I have not had a reoccurance since (?). Maybe that will help you as well.

    Hello tomzmem,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
This situation does sound very frustrating. I know that you have tried some great troubleshooting steps already and the issue remains unresolved. Have you forced the Mail application to close and then opened it back fresh? If not, this is the next troubleshooting step I would suggest. Please let me know if the issue remains unresolved.

The mailbox list is divided into categories with headings in caps, such as ON MY MAC. When you hover the cursor over one of those headings (except for MAILBOXES), you should see the word Show or Hide on the right. Click Show. The  MAILBOXES category can't be hidden.
In each category, the mailboxes are arranged in groups, such as Inbox. To the left of each group is a small disclosure triangle. If the triangle points to the right, click it so that it points down.

Move your cursor way over to the right side of the window. There should be a thin bar. when you hover over the left side of the thin bar, the cursor will change to a vertical bar with an arrow sticking out the left. Click and drag to the left.

  • Mail all going to Spam folder

I have just loaded Lion and all my incoming mail is now going to a folder the inbox has created called Spam. I have set the Junk Filter to put all mail in my in box first even if it thinks it's junk but it still sending everything to this Spam folder. I tried deleting the spam folder, resetting the junk filter and tried sending a test e mail to myself. Mail simply recreated the Spam folder I'd just deleted and sent the test mail there. Has anyone seen this before and know how to fix it?

Sounds like you have a third party spam filter software like SpamSieve-  these require or create a seperate Spam filter Folder.

Is it possible Mail in Lion guise is seeing Intego Personal Antispam even though its switched off?
    Obviously it is.
Try disabling the plug-in in Mail, or
try uninstalling IPA if you can not figure out a fix.

  • IPod touch is tripling my messages from mail.  Doesn't happen all the time.  Upon checking my mail, all incoming messages will show up at least 3 times.

iPod Touch is showing my mail messages tripled.  Incoming messages show up three times instead of as only one message.

I've tried reindexing dozens of times.  It never makes a difference.  I have another issue today.
I just went through a smart "unread" mailbox of 200 messages.  I individually selected all but 4 emails and deleted them all.  After they were deleted, I went to my regular inbox to find an old mesage and all the 196 emails I had just deleted were still in there.

  • HT5767 My mail all of a sudden would not allow me to delete messages in my inbox saying, "couldn't be copied to "Messages" because an item with the same name already exists." Found it duplicates the message I wanted deleted in trash.

Still  using the @mac.com   mail  address and up   to date on everything, but have not gone to Maverick.  All of a sudden Mail wouldn't let me delete.  Said that title of email was already in trash.  And sure enough it was.  Clicking on the help button on the message gets Nothing.
The selected topic is currently unavailable.
The topic you were trying to view could not be found.
"couldn’t be copied to “Messages” because an item with the same name already exists."
Any ideas.  My mail is not tied to gmail etc.. just all by it's lonesome.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, or by corruption of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and  Wi-Fi on certain iMacs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Mail ALL marked as read

When I logged on today Mail took a loooog time to open as is was marking ALL messages in my In Box as "read". Why did this happen? Can I revert to the state it was in before this happened?

Yeah, the stupid part is that all SPAM comes marked as unread. So I get to see that I have spam, just not legitimate mail. Ugh.

  • Can't open attachments in mail, all I can do is save files.

Before I updated to ios5, I was able to open mail attachments by choosing an app. Now all I can do is save the file. If I use gmail directly, I can use an app to view an avi file so it's not the app as I had previously thought. Any suggestions?

    annhadz wrote:
I'm trying to open avi files with either goodplayer or oplayer. I can open them with oplayer if I get my email on the web instead of in mail which makes me think the issue is with mail.
That would be a good guess, and it will probably be addressed in an upcoming update, but it sounds like you are getting along OK for now
