Mail.app doing periodic unauthenticated smtp checks

Apparently, about every 10 minutes, Mail.app tries to connect to my outgoing SMTP server but without authentication.
First off all I have no idea why Mail.app does it, maybe to keep something alive? Would make sense to do that with my IMAP account but nog SMTP.
Secondly it does that without authentication so my server mail error logs are filled with entries like:
2014-06-12 12:26:25 plain authenticator failed for hiddenhost.nl [82.217.xxx.xxx]: 535 Incorrect authentication data (set_id=[email protected])
And looking at the logs I'm not the only one. (I host many domains for customers, a lot of them using macs)
Most people don't notice this but my server also has a bruteforce attack logger and when a certain ip address tries to do too many invalid logins the ip address gets blocked in the firewall. And then my customers notice it since they can't access their mail again and start calling. I disabled this temporarily but off course that's not the right solution.
Is there some way to disable those SMTP checks? Because they are very annoying and breaks the internet! (kinda)

Still an issue in Yosemite too. Am I really the only one having this problem? Those periodic SMTP check are bad. I don't mind Mail.app checking to see if things are still alive but at least do it properly. It seems Mail.app sends the username but not password (or at least not a valid password)

after upgrading to mountain lion, i find that my mail app does not have a "VIP" Tab. Was wondering if anyone else has this issue and what it is about?

First, select sender(s) as VIPs. Then the VIP category will appear.
To select a sender as a VIP, open an email from that sender, then hover over their name and a star icon will appear to the left. Click the star, and that sender will be set as a VIP (and the category will appear in the pane on the left).

  • Windows 8.1 Mail app does not sync with the Office 365 account

My company has recently switched to Office 365. Windows 8.1 Metro Mail app does not work with Office365 account. When I switch to IMAP it works but that is soon going to be disabled and is not compliant with the company policy.
I can add the account and it also pushes the security policies but it does not sync email at all. Says account is not available. The tablet shows up on the mobile devices on the office 365 and I could also remote wipe it.
It seems everything works except basing email sync. What could be the issue?

  • Mail app does not open, mail app does not open, mail app does not open

Mail app does not open at all. When pushing the button nothing happens

    Try resetting your phone:
Press the sleep/wake button & home button at the same time, keep pressing until you see the Apple logo, then release.

  • Mail.App and wifi intermittent SMTP issues

We're having a strange mail sending problem with our PowerBooks. When hooked up to wifi in either of our offices, Mail.App intermittently stops sending mail. It prompts you to try another SMTP account which also fails. At this point, you can still browse the web and receive mail no probs. Then if you plug an Ethernet cable in it starts sending again straight away. You can then pull the Ethernet cable back out and it will continue to send messages over wireless for a while. Some of our staff using Thunderbird don't have this problem. The PowerBooks are running 10.4.7 (though we've had this issue since the day we bought them at about 10.4.2).
I've found these threads which describe the same problem:
    http://forums.macnn.com/archive/index.php/t-208373.html
    http://macosx.com/forums/showthread.php?t=264759

    http://www.deadmime.org/~dank/blog/archives/2003/09/index.html
Because other parts of the net (and receiving through Mail.app) still work, it's hard to fault the hardware. Add to this we have different APs in these offices. Since it's intermittent, it's not likely to be a hardware setup issue. We've looked at the firewall log in both offices and checked the mail log, and nothing is being blocked.
    Anyone seen this before?

My bad, was a combination of several things clouding my vision. Just had the SMTPS port (465) blocked on the firewall. Would help if Apple firewall would use the standard SMTPS port in their firewall list instead of their own SMTPS port (5xx).

  • Mail.app does not like ssl on non-standard port

Simple set up with imaps via ssh tunnel on another machine.
I am connecting via a tunnel and expect to have certificate errors on connection.
Connecting from mail.app with the server on port 10933 does not work. Thunderbird works with the same configuration.
Changing only the port number on the tunnel machine (to 993) then Mail.app performs as expected. No difference to Thunderbird.

Sorry, this is not a solution, but I had the same problem and did extensive troubleshooting on it today. It seems that if the port# is non-standard, Mail will connect in the clear, regardless whether the SSL box is checked.
I was trying to run an SSL-enabled IMAP server (dovecot) on port 1009. I verified that Mail was connecting to that port using netstat. However, it did not succeed in connecting, it reported a timeout error. Yet I can connect manually with openssl s_client.
Next I tried running the non-SSL IMAP server on the same port, WITHOUT changing any of the Mail settings: still port 1009, SSL box checked. This time it did connect properly.
Must be a bug in Mail.app

  • Mail app does not sync "Sent" or "Read" messages with my iPhone mail app.

I just started using a new Mac Mini (running 10.9.1). I have the Mail app connected to a handfull of different email addresses, and my iPhone mail app is connected to the same addresses. If I send a message on one device, the other device will not show it. If I read a message on one, the other will not show that I've read it.
I assume the two Apple devices, both running up-to-date operating systems and using the native Mail app, should be communicating with each other in a way that allows me to work between the two seamlessly. Am I just incorrect in my assumption, is there something I can fix, or is this a bug we're waiting to have repaired?

Actually, my Gmail is the one that does work appropriately. I have a few IMAP addresses I use that do not sync between devices.

  • Mail app. does not open up- error 1000

Does anyone know where I can download mail app. for imax OS x.2.8?

You can't download the specific mail app. It would be on the install cds. Try installing the 10.2.8 combined updater. It might solve your problem: http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosxupdatecombo10_28.html
My grandmother's computer is running 10.3.9. Mail stopped opening and I ran the 10.3.9 combo updater and it works fine now.

  • HT3159 Mail app does not open

My mail application does not open anymore. It appears on the dock, but neither opens, nor does it close. Also, can't get the Mac to shut down, as it says the app is still open.
    What can I do?
    I have OS X 10.6.8 Snow leopard.
    Thank you.

    Hello,
You can Force Quit an application. Press the keys (at the same time) : command + option + escape
You will see a window when you can select an application and click Force Quit.
If that doesn't work, to shut down, press for at least 5 seconds on the power button of your Mac.
    Hope this will help.

  • IPhone Mail.app does not sort mails by date

I've just copied about 3000 old mails from a POP3 account to my Gmail account (IMAP). This was done through OS X mail.app, which just works perfect both in the OS X Mail.app and in the Gmail web interface.
The problem is that the Mail.app on my iPhone seems to sort the mails by some kind of mail ID so all the copied mails appears first in the Mail.app. I can't find any way to sort the mails by their date, which I guess will solve the problem.
If there is missing importing information about the problem please let me know so I can supply with more information.

This is a known issue with gmail. I found this in their FAQ:
"Messages uploaded or copied into Gmail using IMAP may display the wrong date in your inbox or other labels."
    See http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=82365&topic=12922
Apparently "The correct dates should appear in conversation view." applies only to web browsers and not the iPhone Mail app.

  • The mail app does not rotate, only this

    Only this app!!!

Try closing the Mail app via the taskbar and see if it rotates when you re-open the app : from the home screen (i.e. not with the Mail app 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the Mail app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
If that doesn't fix it then try a soft-reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

  • Mail app does not spell check

I have Mail prefs set to 'Check spelling as I type' but it does not. It does not check spelling using contextual menu either. It used to do both these things but they seem to have wandered off. Can anyone help?

I'd say your Mail preferences file is corrupt, so if that's true, you need to re-create it like this:
    Quit Mail.
    Go to Home/Library/Mail and:
*If you have an IMAP account (that includes MobileMe or .Mac accounts)*
move the account folders for those IMAP accounts to your Desktop.
Then restart Mail, setup those account(s) again and wait for Mail to download your email again. Re-set your preferences for everything, then check to see if the problem continues.
If not, then problem solved and you can delete the mail account folders on your Desktop.

  • Mail.app does import folder items and items in folder are not displayed

I had a hard drive crash on my G4 Powerbook. I installed a new harddrive and recovered the data from the old drive....hurrah.... but in a folder I store all my various internet information email(receipts, program info etc) I lost all the emails. I found them in the folder but they aren't shown in the program. I took the backup folder and tried to import them to the folder. Still they don't show up. Should I reinstall mail????

HI, thanks for the help in the past. I've tried several methods of fixing my "lost mail" problem. Once again, I had a hard drive crash replaced the hard drive and copied back the mailbox folders in the library path so MAIL could find them. 2 mailboxes had some messages displayed but not all. I found this out by clicking on the files under the xxxx folder with the emix extension. New messages existed that were not displayed in Mail under the xxxx folder. I tried rebuilding...this was a mistake because NO messages appeared. I tried importing from different back ups and some messages displayed but again, not all of the messages with the emix extensions. I can click on individual emix files and they display but are not searchable nor displayable in MAIL. I tried importing messages but import only worked when I only had the mbox file in the xxxx folder however still not all of the emix files were displayed.
My question is now very much more direct: how do I import the emix files back into mail so they are displayed. Click and drag does not work.
    Thanks
