Mail: drag message difficulty

In Lion Mail, when dragging messages, there are two functionalities:
Drag vertically, and you make a multiple-message selection.
Drag horizontally, and the message moves.Click and hold, and the message becomes movable no matter which direction you start to drag.
I find this difficult to use and I constantly get the wrong behavior. When dragging, I always want to move in this case; if I want to select, I'll use the shift key. This behaviour holds me back when doing rapid sorting of emails, and I have to stop and persuade each one to do what I want.
The question is this: is there a terminal command that would allow me to change the click and hold delay to zero so the message would be in move mode right away?

You're right -- I did mention that dragging horizontally moves the message.
What I'm getting at is that if I have a folder that is a bit further down the list and I try to drag there, it doesn't work. I have developed the habit of flicking the cursor right to "loosen" the message from its mount, then going directly to where I want. But that is kind of a silly thing to have to do. So is having to drag left and then down, when just diagonal would work.
For comparison, look at how nested menubars work. Open a menu and go down to an item that has a popout submenu. You can just jump straight to the item in the submenu, even if you cross the empty space or another item in the top menu. You don't have to tiptoe sideways and then down. It's little stuff that adds up to an easier and faster experience.
In Finder, you drag the empty space to select, or drag the text to move. I like that way pretty well. Mail should do this.
But, oh well, it doesn't. I'm not trying to complain about it. I already have an idea for a solution, but I need to figure out how to access the right setting via terminal, if it is possible. Any tips?
