Mail Finder doesn't find new files

When I save a new file to a folder and then to add it as an attachment to a message in Mail, the finder window in Mail doesn't show the new file. I have to exit and restart Mail for the finder window to find the new file. What's going on?

I often have the same problem, but the annoying workaround I came up with is a little quicker and less annoying than relaunching Mail. I just go into the finder (I don't even need to close the "Attach" window) and change anything about the file—change a single character in the name, move it to another folder, or the desktop, etc.—and the "Attach" window promptly sees it.

Go to your Finder "Go" menu hold the option key to choose "Library".
After that you can drag it to your sidebar for easy access.

  • Finder doesn't find

I tried using finder to find all files with "Adium" in the name. I simply typed "Adium" in the search box and made sure that "This Mac" and "File Name" were selected in the finder window. There is an application called "Adium" installed on my computer.
The finder found the application in the Applications folder and the "Adium_1.3.2.dmg" file in the "Downloads" folder that was used to install it, but it didn't find the many AdiumAddressBookAction*.scpt files that were in the "~/library/Address Book Plug-Ins" folder.
What does it mean when the finder doesn't find things?

Thanks for the answer. I am as mystified as you about the choices Apple made -- it dramatically reduces my confidence in everything else Leopard reports to me. I could go along with their choices if there were transparency and symmetry in them, but giving special and near-invisible special treatment to certain files like that in a search algorithm, of all places, seems irresponsible.
If the Preference pane listed these strange choices it would have been a little less weird, at least they would have been in a reasonable place.
I will follow one of your most sage pieces of advice -- to let Apple know that some of us really do want to know what's going on and aren't just content with oversimplified, consumer glitz.

  • Finder doesn't show new folders/files

I've just created some new folders and files using the "save as" dialog from within Photoshop CS 8.0. Irritatingly, they don't show up in Finder. I can find them using the File>Open dialog in PS, or using, for example, Transmit.
This seems like a very basic function of Finder which is clearly BROKEN.
Changing views/directories/windows etc in Finder doesn't help, nor does quitting PS.
Any hints on how to remedy and/or report this to Apple would be welcome.

It finally occurred to me to relaunch Finder (duh!) and now it shows the new files/folders.

  • Finder doesn't find new excel files

I run an online business and we store customer information in Excel files (Office for Mac 2011). When I search for names in finder, it only shows the files from 2011 or older. New Excel sheets (one is created each day for the days orders) are not found. I have one open right now with the name Trevor Alin. When I search Trevor Alin in Finder, it returns only an old sheet from 2011, it won't show todays file. The same is true for files from months ago.
Is there anything I can do to ensure finder searches new excel files?

You are probably thinking of Terminal
    /Applications/Utilities/Terminal
I think you may need to post to Launchbar's support unless someone else can help, I don't use it & don't know if it only uses Spotlight's index for finding items.

Does Spotlight find the items now? If it does better than Launchbar you will need to look at how to refresh LB's index.

  • Drop & Drop file onto Mail icon doesn't create new message

New to Snow-leopard and what used to work in Leopard... dragging a file from the finder onto the Mail icon would open a new message with that file as the attachment... doesn't seem to work in SL. Mail will come to the front, but, beyond that, nothing happens.

    Hi,
Works properly here, but remember seeing other reports. I will keep looking for earlier topics and resolution, if any, for those reporting.
Meanwhile, create a New User Account on your Mac, and as that New User open Mail and set up one email account as a test. If a POP account, set it to leave messages in the server after download.
See the following if not familiar with adding a new user account:

This will test the app itself vs your current User Account.

  • Finder doesn't show all files

When I add new photos to iPhoto, they do not appear as a file or item in Finder Documents list. I thought Finder was supposed to show all files and items that you create?

santra, use EasyFind or Find File instead. BY default, Apple's own Finder/spotlight doesn't search everywhere and doesn't find everything (Mac fanboys will tell you this is a feature and is so intelligent that some people can't understand how smart it is; I prefer to think of it as a defect).

  • Finder does not show new files, does not acualize

In Mountain Lion I realize that the finder more than once does not show the actual content of folders. Even a "start new" from the stop-dialog did not change it.
A restart of the whole system did.
Pathfinder in opposite did show the new files immediatly.
Does anyone have the same problem?
    Any suggestions?

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
It's a while since i used v5 but I think this is true.
Whereas with early version of iPhoto there was a separate folder for each album, starting at v5 the app doesn;t do that. Instead the album information is stored as part of the main database file. At heart, it's a direction to the app to display certain pics together. The advantage being that a single pics can be many, many albums with no wasted disk space.

  • Snow Leopard finder doesn't list all files on Windows 7 volumes

From my Macbook Pro (10.6.8), I can connect to my Mac Pro, while it is running Windows 7 in Boot Camp, in order to access the Mac Pro's 6 volumes (1 Boot Camp, 5 Mac volumes). This is using SMB via Finder's 'Connect to server…' on an Airport network.
However, Finder never displays all the files and folders on any of the Mac volumes it connects to through Windows 7. It seems to show approximately the first 18-9 files and folders, and then nothing. The same applies when I open a nested folder — it doesn't list all of its contents.
Any ideas as to what's causing this and how I can fix it? I have searched all over but can't find any answers yet, so I'm hoping someone here has seen this before.

Thanks for the reply, but I do have the Restore Windows box checked (see below). And the Resume features info (cnet link) only addresses how to turn the feature off, either selectively or globally. I'm simply looking for the functionality that I had with Snow Leopard and now seems to be absent. Maybe it's a bug in my Finder.

  • Finder does not show new files with older creation dates

Short story: when I somehow create new files or folders with older dates, Finder does not show them.
This happens e.g. when I unrar archives created some time ago: the files or folders coming out of the archive get their original date, which is earlier than today.
I can see those files and folders without problems in a terminal (using ls). But they don't show up in Finder when I visit the same directory.
When I use terminal to go into some directory that is not yet visible in Finder, and I open a new Finder window for that directory from within terminal (using "open ."), the new directory and its contents will show up in Finder.
My best guess is that some things have changed in the way Finder and the indexing of my flle system co-operate. In any case, this is higly annoying.
Does anyone know how to fix this?

I have the same problem.  I create files and they do not show up in their respective Finder window.  I know the files are there because I created them and I can see them using Terminal and applications can open them.  If I refresh the window by going to the parent directory and back again, the files do not show up.  If I close all windows and open that specific  window again, the files still do not show up.  If I leave the computer overnight, the new files still do not show up.  As brdsutte stated, after rebooting the computer, the files show up in the Finder window.  Anyone have any suggestions?

  • Finder doesn't show socket files

    Hi Community,
if we navigate into a folder by using the Finder (e.g. /private/var/run) the Finder is hiding the socket files but in a Terminal we can see this files without the hidden flag. The Finder Setting 'AppleShowAllFiles TRUE' doesn't change this behavior. But the Finder in Snow Leopard is showing this files. Is there a way to setup the Finder to show this files as well? How does the system hide this files in the Finder?

  • Finder doesn't show .numbers files (at all)

i'm running mac osx 10.6 (snow leopard) and am having a strange finder problem. in finder, my .numbers files never show up. i can type in the exact name and it just gives me zero results. i can search using part of the name, nothing. if i open numbers and a .numbers file is in my recent docs, i can open it and use it there, but if i try to open from .numbers and it's not in the recent files and so numbers has to use finder, still nothing.
it has always been this way; this behavior is not new.
    please help!
    (i'm using iWork '09, btw)

I just experienced the exact same issue Julie.  I had never had this happen to me before (that I'm aware of), but it just happened now.
The one thing I did differently (which I thought might have a bearing on it), was after creating the spreadsheet, when I went to save it, I wanted it to appear at the top of a long list of files in a particular folder I have on my desktop, so I began the filename with three spaces.  The filename I actually used in this case was "<space><space><space>Timeline".  The file does not appear in Finder, nor does it come up in a Spotlight search.  The only way I can access the file now is by using Numbers "Open Recent" command.
I then renamed the file without the leading spaces, putting it in the same folder, and it too is invisible to Finder.
On my third attempt, again without leading spaces, I altered the name slightly (calling it" Timeline3"), but this time selected the desktop as my destination, and it appeared just fine.
Now I'm stuck with two invisible files in a folder that I cannot access via Finder.
I tried to duplicate the problem by creating another file (which I named "   Can I make this invisible?" i.e. again putting 3 spaces at the beginning of it), directed it to the same folder as before, but it shows up okay.  Thus, my "leading spaces" theory may be shot down, but I still wonder.  Strang behavior.
I just tried one other thing.  I opened my "   Timeline.numbers" file (using the "Open Recent" capability, and this time decided to save it to the desktop (with the same three leading spaces in the file name).  It appeared just fine!  I then took this visible version, and put it in my folder (where the invisible version sits).  I thought I may get a warning about and older version of the file existing, but that didn't occur.  However, when I do the "Open Recent" command, both appear.  Here's a screen shot...
Thus, if you wish to retrieve those files (if they are still available on your "Open Recent" menu), try saving them specifically to your desktop.  It may work.
In the meantime, I hope they figure this bug out.  And if anyone can tell me how to delete those invisibie files, that'd be great.
    I'm running Mac OS X Version 10.6.8, and Numbers '09 version 2.1 (436).

  • Finder doesn´t find documents in application support

    Hi there
I saved eventually a few pages documents in the users/application support/iworks/templates/my templates folder. Now pages displays all these documents among the real templates. Of course I´d like to delete them. But Finder doesn´t display or even find them! Not even if I try to look up in all my data. Any suggestions? I´ve tried to delete and rebuild the folder, the situation is the same: the phantom templates remaining there...
    Thanks for any help

Just got into the folder and delete them. The Finder doesn't search in the Library by default, but can be made to.
To access your user Library, hold down the option key while selecting the Go menu in Finder. There will be a Library entry. Then make your way into that folder and move the files.
Once you have the Library folder open, you can search it by typing in the search field. Or, you can start from anywhere and set a criteria to include system files. In the criteria dropdown, choose Other… From the list choose System Files and check the box next to it so it stays in the menu (you can do the same for file invisibilty). Now you can add that as a criteria and it will list system files (ie the ones inside the Library).

  • Finder doesn't find anymore

In the past, I've used Finder to find large files, say, anything over 10mb, so I can delete unnecessary ones and clean up my disk.  I'll set the criteria as "Size" "is greater than" "10" "mb".  However, in the last month or so, it no longer works.  When I do a search, it doesn't find anything.  The status at the bottom says "Searching This Mac" and stays that way forever.  In the past, it started listing files immediately.  Anybody have any idea what could be wrong?
I'm running Mac OS 10.5.8.  Latest software updates always applied.  Thanks.
    Rob

I figured it out myself.  Awhile back, I noticed that the Mac would seem to hang, and I couldn't do anything.  Activity Monitor showed me the cause of the problem was a program called mdworker.  I did some research on the web, and found out that mdworker is part of a program called Spotlight.  I never used Spotlight, never even heard of it, and didn't see any use for it, since we have Finder.  So I followed the steps to disable it.
I re-enabled Spotlight, and that fixed the Finder problem.  So apparently Finder relies on Spotlight for the Find function.  It doesn't need it for the normal file managing purposes.
I guess I'll just have to put up with Spotlight/mdworker hanging my system occasionally.
