Mail index damaged repeatedly

I've been trying to use Apple Mail with my Gmail and Google Apps accounts, both using IMAP. Everything has been working fine, except now at least twice idea I get message telling me that the Mail index has been damaged. I need to quit Mail and import old messages. Beyond this annoyance, it's a pain because I have to re-download a very large archive of messages from my Gmail account.
I tried deleting the old Envelope Index files but that hasn't done any good.

i'm having exactly the same problem. it started yesterday. just now mail suddenly said the index was damaged and it needed to import it all again. it imported, then restarted. mail barely finished starting before it said it was corrupt again. . .

Yosemite updated but Mail index damaged and does not repair when re-opened. How is this fixed?

I have the same thing happening.  Everything else seems to be working fine, except i can't open my mac mail at all!  it seems to be in a loop and won't let me retrieve any mail or even try to send mail before migrating, but it fails and then its back to the beginning and the same loop continues, so no mac mail working.  I also came from 10.6.8 to 10.10

  • Mail Upgrade Failed. Launch mail assistant. Mail index damaged. Says it will repair when mail is launched but it never does repair it. Any idea why this is happening?

I downloaded Yosemite to upgrade from IOS 10.6.8. Mail will not work. It says the upgrade failed and to launch the mail assistant. Then the next message says mail index has been damaged. To repair it quit Mail. It will be repaired the next time you launch mail. However, this never works. I tried recovery and downloaded the software again but the same thing happened. Any ideas how to fix this?

Mine is totally porked.  I tried deleting the Envelope index files  and reimporting the mailboxes, but it stalled on import and now all it does when I try to open the program is become unresponsive.  I can see greyed out and unselectable the mail boxes with unread mail, but when I click on one, I get the spinning beachball of death.

  • Mail Index Damaged

This message has appeared 3 days in a row, telling me that Mail will repair the damage when I quit Mail. When I do this, Mail won't reopen unless I restart the computer and then the settings seem to be from 5 years ago and all my messages are gone. Only the empty folders remain from last week. I deleted the .Mac settings and reinstated the POP Gmail settings but I'm hoping to get all my messages back and also stop this from happening everyday. Anyone have any answers for me please?

My statement that the settings seem to be from 5 years ago means just that.
And that’s precisely the problem, that it doesn’t make sense and I have no way of knowing what your settings were 5 years ago. Now that you’ve explained it, it becomes clear what happened.
It’s not that your settings are from 5 years ago. It’s that something happened to ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist and Mail decided to create it anew. As a result, all your non-.Mac account settings were lost, but your .Mac settings are probably still in System Preferences > .Mac and Mail always looks there when re-creating com.apple.mail.plist. All the other settings stored in com.apple.mail.plist are now at their default values (unless you’ve changed them again), not at the values they had 5 years ago.
What’s the capacity and space available on your startup disk? Take a look at the comments about disk space in the following article, in case they apply to you, before proceeding to fix the problem:

  • Why repeated "Your Mail index has been damaged" errors?

In my Mail.app (running on a white MacBook Pro with Snow Leopard) I frequently (sometimes daily) get the "Your Mail index has been damaged. To repair it, quit Mail." messages. Either letting the system repair or just Force Quit & restarting then I'm away again, but only for a few hours or days.
Any ideas how to debug what's causing this? It's making Mail totally unusable.
I use IMAP for about 5 accounts with this app. I don't have any problems with other Mail clients.
    Thanks, Michael

I am not a clued up user as you might realise. I do not get nor can a search find a library folder nor any of the other files you have mentioned
    The screenshot I have is
    Sorry to be so basic.

  • Your mail index has been damaged. should I delete all of my Envelope Index files?

When I attempt to launch mail, it begins by telling me that I need to import messages. Then it says upgrading mail database, then migrating data, then upgrade failed, click continue to launch mail assistant. When you click on that, the next message that comes up is your mail index has been damaged and will be fixed the next time Mail launches, only it doesn't. I go through the entire process again. Someone last night said something about deleting the Envelope Index files. Should I get rid of all of them? The person mentioned 3 of the files (Envelope Index, Envelope Index-wal, Envelope Index-shm), but I have 15 files altogether.

I should add that several of the Envelope Index files are in two different places; the bulk are in Library/Mail/V2-Temp.noindex/MailData/, the rest are in Library/Mail/

  • Damaged Mail Index in Lion

I just downloaded Lion OS X the other night with few difficulties (aside from my attempts to get used to the new gestures), until I attempted to check my email using Mail. I'm importing a few different POP accounts, and after the importing of my messages, it tells me that the upgrade failed, and tells me that ,"Your Mail index has been damaged. To repair it, quit Mail." I've looked into the problem and saw fixes like:
    1) delete the Envelope Index files (~/Library/Mail ) and reopen mail (didn't work)
    and
    2) delete the com.apple.mail.plist file (~/Library/Preferences) and reopen mail (which also didn't work).
Not only did these fail to fix Mail, but they actually succeeded in making things worse. Now when I open mail, instead of importing 4417 emails, it only imports 3263 emails. I'm hoping that they aren't permantly lost.
Is anyone else having this issue? Does anyone have a fix for this? I would be extremely surprised if Apple decided to release a new OS which doesn't play nicely with a pre-installed app (which I was excited to use with all of the fancy new features they tout).
    Thanks!
    ~Austen

May I advise you to ask this question or see if it has been asked in the Lion discussion community?  Just a thought since I have no idea -Ken

  • Your mail index has been damaged

I recently upgraded my I-max to Yosemite.  Now my email is not working.   Says" Your mail index has been damaged.  To repair it, quit mail.  Your mail boxes and messages will be preserved".

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen. Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Launch Mail. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

  • "Mail index is damaged"

New problem.....When opening mail, I get the message "Mail index is damaged. Quit program and mail will repair index when re-opened." The only option at that point is to hit the quit button.
When I then open mail again, there is no repair/rebuild, and the same dialog box opens. So at present my Mac Mail program is unusable.
    Any thoughts?
    Fabian

This yields two separate errors and does not fix the problem:(

  • Mail app damaged after Yosemite upgrade

I upgraded to Yosemite and among other problems, my mail app does not work. When I open the application it prompts me to begin the message import process. I click 'continue' and the message import begins. The process progresses until it reaches the migration of data, at which point it stops and an error message appears.
    >>"The upgrade failed. An error occurred during the upgrade. Click Continue to launch the Mail Import Assistant, which will help you build a new library and import your existing messages." >>
However, when I click continue another error message appears. >>"Your Mail index has been damaged. To repair, quit Mail. Mail will repair the index the next time you open Mail. Your mailboxes and messages will be preserved.">>
When I reopen Mail, this entire process is repeated and I get no where.
I've tried chatting with apple support and it was not helpful. I created an admin account under safe mode and mail opened fine, prompting me to set up a mailbox.  I have cleared my Caches. I repaired HD in recovery mode, disk repair and repair permissions.  Nothing as worked and my mac is running insanely slow.
    Someone please help me!

Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, Mavericks or Yosemite without erasing drive
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu.

  • Can't open Mail, Index is broken!

    Hi, I need some help.
I don't use Mail on my iMac or Macbook Pro Retina but need it to run some AppleScripts, so I tried to open it on my Macbook Pro Retina and iMac but can't open it on either, it just comes up with the below:
    First:
To use the new features in Mail, your existing Mail messages need to be imported into the new version the first time you use Mail. this might take a few minutes. You won't be able to use Mail until the import is finished.
Click Continue to import your messages now, or click Cancel to import later.
If you click cancel, it just closes and if you click continue it does the below:
    The Upgrade Failed
An error occurred during the upgrade. Click continue to launch the Mail Import Assistant, which will help you create a new library and import your existing messages.
So I then click continue and this is what appears:
You Mail Index has been damaged. To repair it, quit Mail.
Mail will repair the index the next time you open Mail. Your mailboxes and messages will be preserved.
So I then click Quit. It shuts down and then if you try to open it again, it just does the same thing again and again.
I have managed to fix the one on my Macbook Pro Retina by following what some people suggested on other posts, what worked was deleting the com.apple.mail folder inside Library/Containers. And I haven't had a problem since but with the iMac once this file is deleted, it allows you to go through the whole set up for a new account and then goes into the same error pattern as mentioned above. I have also tried deleting the Envelope Index inside Library/Mail/V2/Mail Data and in the Mail folder too, but nothing seems to work.
Can someone please adivse as to how I can re set my Mail, there is nothing in there so it can be rebooted or something like that. I just don't understand why I have managed to fix in one computer and not in the other one !!
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Sally

    Quit Mail. Then select
     ▹ Force Quit...
from the menu bar. A small window will open with a list of running applications. Mail may appear in that list, even though you quit it. If so, select it and press return. Close the window.
In the Finder, hold down the option key and select
    Go ▹ Library
from the menu bar. Move the following items from the folder that opens to the Trash (some may not exist):
    Caches/com.apple.mail
    Saved Application State/com.apple.mail.savedState
    Application Support/AddressBook/MailRecents-v4.abcdmr
    Containers/com.apple.mail
    Mail
    Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist (OS X 10.7 only)
    Preferences/com.apple.mail.searchhistory.plist (OS X 10.7 only)
Note: you are not moving the Mail application. You’re moving a folder named “Mail.”
Log out and log back in. Launch Mail. It will behave as if you were running it for the first time. Go through the setup process with one of your accounts.

  • Mail indexing and lost sent mail

since yesterday, mail has been repeatedly indexing, always getting stuck on one particular email and taking over 1/2 an hour each time before allowing access to the program. Finally, I was able to run a search and delete the offending email before the indexing hung. I assumed this would resolve the problem. But no. It still gets stuck at the exact same point.
On the next pass I selected rebuild mailbox on the sent mailbox as this is where the particular email was. Now all the sent mail foir that account is gone. Yet indexing still reports as stuck on the very same email as before.
How can I get my sent mail back? How can I stop this endless indexing?
    G4/400, G4/dual 867   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

I am having same/similar problem with Mail 1.3.11 on 10.3.9. If I even open the Sent Mail box I just get the text that Mail is 'sorting messages' and in the right of the bar I get the spinning segmental timer but nothing happens. It says I have 400+ messages in the Sent folder but never lists them.
I cannot quit Mail either and have to Force Quit all the time. Sorry to say that I have started using Thunderbird with no problems but Mac Mail is my default mail app.
I click the segmental timer in top right of bar and up comes a list of active processes that are currently running. I click the big red Stop icons on this list but this doesn't stop them - things just grind to a halt. Mail doesn't quit/hang but just freezes.
    Any ideas very greatly welcomed!

  • Mail index corruption

    Need help on this.
Wife's MacBook Pro with OS 10.6.8 was giving a lot of mail trouble: not connecting with ISP, freezing, and just general contankerous.  We tried several thing such as permissions, defrag, and diskwarrior, etc.
We then upgraded to10.8.4 but still have a problem with mail.  Mail opening process finds at attempts to import saved mail data but final window warning states mail index error.  Next window states quit and reopen Mail to fix indexing.
We have an Index.sproduct in the Mac OS X Install Data.  According to the file info, it was created when we installed OS 10.8.4.
Problem is that that does not happen.  Still cannot open Mail 6.5.

Out of interest to everyone, it's great to know the solution to this problem is readily available.
I had this problem with an iMac when upgrading from 10.6.8 to Yosemite.
I must have tried 6 times to do this rebuild/reindex without success until...
    - I found I had files stored in 2 places : /mail and v2/maildata
For me it was necessary to:
    1. Remove all the imap accounts from both places
    2. Remove envelope index and associated files as explained elsewhere from both places.
Once that was done, hey presto! It rebuilt very quickly.
Thanks to everyone who takes time to contribute. When it's all going pear-shaped these discussion help enormously.
These two conversations helped me also:
