Mail Missing From Restore

Hello, We are having some issues with missing mail (mainly in Inbox, Sent and Trash) from a restore process. Several users' mail was inadvertently deleted on the mail server. We figured out who the users were and set about restoring their mail from our Tivoli backups.
A "reconstruct" was done once the restore was complete, and everything appeared consistent. However, users are missing mail in their desktop client (thunderbird). But we can see the mail (message count) on the server.
The problem seems to be that after a mailbox has been restored from tape, the iPlanet reconstruct command does not like the store.idx file and deletes most of the messages.
Is there a piece we're missing? We've restore mail folders for users in the past with no problems of this sort. I don't think we've ever had to restore the full mail for a user.
We're running an old version ... waiting for a migration this spring.
Planet Messaging Server 5.2 HotFix 2.01 (built Aug 26 2004)
libimta.so 5.2 HotFix 2.01 (built 11:07:49, Aug 26 2004)
SunOS inflow 5.9 Generic_122300-42 sun4u sparc SUNW,Sun-Fire-V240
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
Karol

Did the users delete the emails using an email client (e.g. Thunderbird or Messenger Express) or did they "magically" disappear due to some kind of system level corruption?
A "reconstruct" was done once the restore was complete, and everything appeared consistent. However, users are missing mail in their desktop client (thunderbird). But we can see the mail (message count) on the server. You cannot restore previously deleted/expunged individual *.msg files back into the original mailbox and expect them to show up. You need to restore the emails into a completely new folder.
For example, you can create a "recovered" folder (./mboxutil -c user/<uid>/recovered) then restore the emails to the directory created by that command.
Running reconstruct of this new folder will then cause the restored emails to show up and the user then just needs to subscribe to the folder in their IMAP client.
If you were using imsbackup/imsrestore this problem wouldn't have occurred as imsrestore marks the emails as "new".
The problem seems to be that after a mailbox has been restored from tape, the iPlanet reconstruct command does not like the store.idx file and deletes most of the messages. If you restore a folder, and the backup was taken after the email had already been marked-as-deleted by the email client then the email will remain "deleted". The *.msg files aren't cleaned up until the daily imexpire run.
Later versions of Messaging Server have an option to "undelete/expunge" messages that have been deleted by the client by not removed off disk.

Shane.

  • Mailboxes and address book missing from restored program files

I re-installed TB 3.1.20, after having to re-install Windows Vista, with all other software and data. I then restored my TB files from a NTI Backup NOW file (when I back up files I include the program files for TB so I don't lose mailboxes and the address book). However when opening TB neither my mailboxes or address book are there. This system has worked in the past, so I trusted it would this time as well.
Any idea how to find and restore them?

Your mail and address book is stored in your Thunderbird profile. The profile is separate from the Thunderbird program installation.
Check this article to locate your profile folder.

  • Mail missing from Comcast

    Hello all,
I hope someone can help me get my missing mail from my secondary mail account. It disappeared and I set up another secondary account to try to retrieve i It.  Now when I click on mail that was already downloaded OR Sent I get a message, "The message from (my mailbox)  has not been downloaded from the server. You need to take this account online in order to download it".  I went to my web mail account and it is not there either.  I have my setting to Not delete mail.
I called Comcast and they said they would put my mail back.  That was Friday, and still no mail.  Is there anything I can do to recover this mail?  Did I mess up with I set up another secondary account in Mail.
Thank you in advance for help with this.

    > I deleted the original secondary account because Mail would not allow me to add another one unless I did (or I didn't know how to).
You just have to give it a Different Description at step 2 in creating a new account.
    >Isn't it possible for Comcast to resend my mail from their server?
Well, they certainly should be able to, they could for the FNI or NSA!
But I doubt anybody at Comcast knows anything about anything, especially what goes on at Comcast.
    >Isn't it possible for Comcast to resend my mail from their server?
Well, not sure, Mail is vicious when deleting things, but in the Finder go here...
    Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail
Look in the various folders there.

  • Inbox Mail Missing from Upgrade to Tiger

I've just upgraded (Archive and Install) to 10.4.6 from 10.3.9. Everything seems ok, but I'm missing all of my old mail. All of my old SENT, DRAFT and TRASH mail is there, but only mail from today is in the INBOX.
    Can anybody help?
    Thanks,
    Patrick

This is a known issue. The conversion from Mail 1.x to Mail 2.x is broken. Take a look at the following thread to better understand the problem:
Help! "You need to take this account online in order to download it."
In particular, you may want to take a look at the following article (also referenced in that thread) to learn what you might have done before upgrading to minimize the risk of this happening, and what you may do after fixing the problem to avoid similar issues from happening in the future. DON'T do now what the article suggests, though, as that would make things worse in the current situation:
    Overstuffed mailbox is unexpectedly empty
More specifically, if this is a POP account, the following procedure should allow you to fix the Inbox problems:
    1. Quit Mail.
    2. Make a backup copy of the ~/Library/Mail folder, just in case something goes wrong while trying to fix the problem. You can do this in the Finder by dragging the folder to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down, for example. This is where all your mail is stored.
    3. Create a new folder on the Desktop and name it however you wish (e.g. Inbox Old). It doesn't need to have an .mbox extension.
    4. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/POP-username@mailserver/INBOX.mbox/.
    5. Move the files mbox and Incoming_Mail out of INBOX.mbox, into the Inbox Old folder just created on the Desktop. These files contain all the messages that were in the mailbox before the upgrade to Tiger, and maybe even some messages that had been deleted. mbox is the most important. Incoming_Mail may or may not be present.
    6. Move any strangely-named Messages-XXXXXX folder to the Desktop (not into the Inbox Old folder). These folders are to be deleted after fixing the problem. They are temporary folders created during an import or an indexing process, and Mail should have deleted them when done. Their presence is a clear indication that something didn't work as expected. If you've been using Mail after the conversion and have already tried to fix the problem by rebuilding the mailbox or something like that, they might contain messages that are neither in Messages proper nor in the mbox file, so keep them around until the problem is fixed.
    7. Move everything else within INBOX.mbox, except the Messages folder, to the Trash.
The result of the above should be that INBOX.mbox contains the proper Messages folder only, and the Inbox Old folder on the Desktop contains the mbox and Incoming_Mail (if it exists) files only. Now, proceed as follows:
    8. Open Mail.
    9. The account's Inbox should properly display in Mail as many messages as *.emlx files are in ~/Library/Mail/POP-username@mailserver/INBOX.mbox/Messages/. If that's not the case, select the mailbox in Mail and do Mailbox > Rebuild.
    10. In Mail, do File > Import Mailboxes, choose Other as the data format, and follow the instructions to import the Inbox Old folder that's on the Desktop. Do with the imported mail whatever you wish. You may move to the account's Inbox the messages that Mail failed to convert properly, and delete those that did get through and, hence, are duplicates now.
The following collection of AppleScripts has a Remove Duplicates script that can be useful for removing duplicate messages:
    http://homepage.mac.com/aamann/Mail_Scripts.html
If all is well and you're not missing anything, the files on the Desktop can be deleted, although you may want to keep them for a while, just in case.
Ask for any clarifications or if you need further assistance.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user's home folder, i.e. ~/Library is the Library folder within the user's home folder.

  • Sent mail missing from my Gmail account.

Yesterday I found several years of sent mail had gone from my gmail account on Mail and also in my web Gmail account.  Fortunately I have Time Capsule as a back up and so I was able to restore my sent mail.  That enabled me to explore when it happened.  My sent mail was there on morning of 18 november but gone by morning of 19 November.  Apple helpfully records the dates of updates and I ran the software up date for mavericks to fix bugs in Gmail on afternoon of 18 November.  I looked at my Gmail mail preferences in Mail and was surprised to find sent mail set to delete sent mail on quitting Mail.  That was not my setting ( I have not been into my Mail preferences for some weeks) and must have happened during the software update.  I typically shut down my MacBook Pro at night so after the update on 18 November and shut down near midnight, my sent mail was deleted.  So warning to check your Mail preferences for Gmail after running this update.  If anyone has an explanation for why the Gmail sent mail settings changed with the software update I would be interested.

    Hi APK25,
If your Sent messages aren't showing up where you expect them to, you may want to take a look at the following article:

  • Very old 'Sent' mail missing from mailbox - help?

I've got a question about (really) old mail in my Sent mailbox. I went today to look for some very old messages (around 9/2001), and the earliest mail available to me is from Jan 1, 2003.
Does Mail archive or delete mail after it passes a certain age?
If so, how can I find my old mail?
    Jim

Jim, I had thought that if you select Never as time after which sent mesages are deleted that they would stay saved on your hard drive.

  • Mail missing from "Sent Mail" folder.

I searched my sent mail files for an email I sent out about 3 months ago. To my amazement, everything in the file before the date of Sept. 23 opened up with a line that went something like: "In order to view this document, you must first go online and download it." When I checked in the menu, it showed that Mail was online. I tried rebuilding my mail and every sent letter before 9/23 was deleted. When I go to my backup files, Mail tells me that the files are not Mail files. I'm perplexed, and haven't a clue as to what to do. This is not the first time I have had lost mail problems. Is Mail full of major bugs? Should I go back to Entourage? I never had a problem when I used it, but hate using any Microsoft applications.
    PowerMac 2 ghz G5 DP   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

I have this same problem. My Sent Messages.mbox says it is 1.94 GB so I know the messages are there. So far, I have found no solutions. Hopefully someone out there has some info - please!

  • Mail is completely missing from settings.

The Mail icon suddenly disappeared from my Ipad Mini.  The Mail Settings category is completely missing within the General Setting screen as well.  How don't I restore the settings?

    Hi Mikenal,
If you are having issues with your iPad's Mail application being missing from your applications as well as from Settings, you may want to try some things to troubleshoot.
First, quit all running applications and test again -
Force an app to close in iOS
Next, I would try restarting and if needed resetting the iPad -
Restart or reset your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
If the issue is still present, you may want to restore the iPad as a new device -
How to erase your iOS device and then set it up as a new device or restore it from backups

  • TS3899 Search missing from mail

Search is missing from my mail and I can't seem to access my other email accounts

    Hi,
”After restarting the computer, I ran windows update (windows defender updated), and since then have
restarted a few more times, but the search bar is simply missing from the start menu. It's just gone.“
May I know the preview build version you're using now? I wonder whether you're performing a normal Windows Updates or a system upgrade at that time. If it is normal Windows Updates then check if it has created a restore point before installing the updates,
if it has, then you could restore the system to a previous state with system restore and check if it could help you.

  • Mail won't restore from backup

    Hi everybody,
I had a problem with my Mail program recently where everything older than week was being deleted off my IMAP account.  I've since solved that problem, but now I'm having trouble restoring my missing emails from a previous backup.  I've tried twice to replace the contents in the ~(home)/Library/Mail folder from a backup on my external hard drive, and my missing emails will actually appear for a second in my inbox before disappearing again.  Does anyone have a clue why this is happening?
Thanks in advance for your help!  I definitely appreciate it!

    Hi Pondini,
Thanks so much for responding!  It turns out that since my email is set up as an IMAP account, Mac Mail checks the mail server and deletes whatever messages I've restored from my backup to match what's on the server.  If you or anyone else comes across this problem, here is the solution:
I can confirm that you can indeed restore deleted IMAP email from a time machine backup. But what you have to do is this: FIRST disconnect your computer from the Internet. Then go to Users/yourusername/Library/Mail. Then enter time machine and go back to a time before you deleted the mail, and restore the whole ~/Library/Mail folder. You will see that all your mail looks like it's back - BUT before connecting to the Internet (which would make it all go away again), create a new mailbox - but make it a local mailbox (in other words create it On My Mac - not on MobileMe. Then copy all the mail from your MobileMe mailboxes to that local mailbox (or mailboxes if you prefer). Finally, connect to the Internet again. You will notice that immediately, all your MobileMe mailboxes disappear again (but you have their contents still on your newly created local mailboxes). Now you can create new MobileMe mailbox/es, and then drag the mail from your local mailboxes On My Mac - to the appropriate MobileMe mailboxes where you want them to be. Mail.app will now upload those messages to the MobileMe server (that could take quite a while). But all your mail will then be back where it was before you deleted it.

  • Iphone 4 wont sync to itunes anymore. Itunes opens then a message comes up saying I need to restore it. I want to avoid doing this as I've noticed some of my purchases since updating itunes are missing from computer but they are on my phone.

I have reset my phone, put the latest updates on itunes and iphone and thought it might work then, but no luck. I am trying to avoid restoring it as I dont want to loose the data I have purchased that is missing off my itunes since I updated that. I'm not sure how to contact itunes to get my data put back on my itunes on computer. All my purcahsed data from itunes still comes up on my phone as it hasnt been able to sync to the update. DOes anyone know how to contact itunes to have bought data re-put back on. It comes up in my itunes acocount with the date and purchase number but these items are missing from my itunes purcahsed items. Weird?
I am on an imac. Is there anyway I can get around the issue of syncing again or should I just restore once I have contacted itunes about them deleting my paid for items! I feel very ripped off, its like buyoing something from target and having the manager come to your house and retrieve it! lol

Add the account back to your phone and enable contacts syncing with the account and the contacts will reappear on your phone.  If you want them in iCloud, you'll have to copy them to your iCloud account.  If you need assistance doing this, reply back and I'll help you.
