Mail opens automatically at what seems to be random times

I have a hard time reproducing this but when I go to download a file off the internet or sometimes when I am editing pictures the mail app opens all by itself. I am totally confused at what this might be. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Hmmm, how much maintenance have you done lately?

  • Mail Opening Automatically At Startup... On Laptop Only

I'm having an interesting issue with my Mac setup, that I see has happened to others as well:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8750623&#8750623
Here's my problem: the Mail application opens automatically on every system startup on my MacBook (first gen, 10.5.6) but does not do so on my Mac Mini (also on 10.5.6, 1.83 Intel Core Duo)
I have tried everything to find out what's happening. Here's what I've tried:
    1. "Login at Startup" is not checked in the dock icon
    2. It isn't in /Library/StartupItems
    3. It is not added in the Login screen in System Preferences
    4. I've repaired permissions
    5. I've emptied all caches/etc
    6. I even checked startup items in Lingon, couldn't find anything
    7. I even tried a full erase and install on the MacBook
None of these worked. Even after the erase and install, my MacBook still loads Mail upon startup, when my Mini does not.
I've read in a few threads that if you have iCal set up to send email reminders, that could be contributing to this problem. That's annoying but at least it makes sense. What doesn't make sense is that it happens on only my laptop. Apparently, the other person who posted this problem is having the same issue (see link above.)
To elaborate further, I have two accounts in iCal - one for personal, and one for Google Calendar, which is synced over CalDAV.
Strangely enought, I have some email reminders that are sent from one email address, and some from another. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason as far as to which email account is used to send the reminders.
Can anyone help with these two issues? I'll be willing to provide any further information if asked.

I have the same problem on my Macbook. I really hate Mail (I used it IMAP with Gmail and didn't like the way it handled at all) and was so frustrated with the pop-ups at login that I deleted Mail and all its related files -- and then program finder started popping up at login asking where mail had gone! I just deleted my calendars from iCal and am hoping that will make it stop. Don't know why it's so annoying, but it certainly is.

  • How to stop mail opening automatically.

I had this problem on my iMac now checking for iPad . I don't like when my mail opens without me choosing which ones to open. An example if I delete an email it will open. Up the next one. Anyway to stop this.?
    Thanks in advance.

On y our iMac you can probably turn off the 'preview pane' (that's what it's called on PC's anyway)
But on the iPad i don't believe that you have that kind of control.

  • Why is Mail opening automatically in Mountain Lion?

I don't use Apple Mail under Mountain Lion (just Gmail online), but I do have several Google accounts configured, which I use for contacts and calendar.
Several times a day, Mail starts automatically and I cannot figure out why. I have turned off all mail-related notification and any other preferences I could find. But still, I find myself quitting Mail several time a day.
    How can I stop this?

    Hello,
If you set up your Google accounts on ML, then the Notification Center opens automatically your Mail client.
You can stop that in System Preferences > Notifications and drag “Mail” at the bottom of the window in “Not in Notification Center”.
    Hope this will help.

  • Mail opens automatically on wake up

When my computer wakes from sleep, mail always opens. I don't use this application. "Open at login" is NOT checked. I can't seem to find anyone else having this problem (which seems odd), but I also can't find any settings for sleep mode or in the mail application itself that seem to have anything to do with this.

did you? check system preferences->accounts->login items and remove Mail from there if it's on the list.

  • How do I stop mail opening automatically if I click email link in browser?

This is more an annoyance than a problem, but: I usually avoid doing this, but sometimes I forget, that when I click on an embedded email in a webpage that Mail will open and set up a composing box for that address (this is when the mailto: command is invoked, I suppose). Is there any way to disable this? I don't use the Mail application, and would just like it to stop.

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
In the Preferences to Mail you can set the Default Mail application to whatever you prefer.
Mail -> Preferences -> Default Mail Reader
Thereafter your preferred application will appear when you click a Mailto link,
    Regards
    TD

  • Mail Opening Automatically At Startup

My wife's MacBook Pro is having this same problem with Mail that was raised by users back in 2009.

Doc icon option to "Open at login" is not checked.
I've deleted Mail from the startup items list -- and it reappears there after restart!  No solutions posted.  Any ideas?

Make sure you have this turned off:

  • Mail opens automatically, but not checked in Login Items

It's not listed in the Login Items, and I don't see a preference in the app. Not sure why it still opens whenever I log in or boot up my macbook pro. Ideas?

Found the answer in another thread... it worked.
go to the directory /users/username/library/preferences and delete the files loginwindow.plist, com.apple.loginitems.plist and log out/in.
    Thanks

  • Some website opens automatically in a new tab with some time interval repeatedly

Sometimes a specific website ie. " http://www.yourtest-india.com/cgi-bin/wingame.pl?partner_pk=8&wingame_pk=40&freetest_pk=10&SourceId=355&CreativeId=23885235&LineItemId=8914668&PublisherId=309257&SectionId=8433399&sub_id_postback=00005de1e959adfd24a71a545c7258e4a8e59 " opens repeatedly in new tab with some time interval and even if I close the new tab that has opened again this new tab opens after same time interval.
This happens only when the firefox window is active or open. When the window is minimized no new tabs open. But once I switch to firefox new tab opens immediately with the same page as mentioned above.

Sometimes a problem with Firefox may be a result of malware installed on your computer, that you may not be aware of.
You can try these free programs to scan for malware, which work with your existing antivirus software:

  • Why does iTunes no longer open automatically when iPad is connected?

Why does iTunes no longer open automatically when iPad is connected? and iPhone as well?  Setting to "auto open" is selected, but iTunes will not open automatically. Problem seems to have begun with upgrade to Lion.

Good luck getting an answer...I posted the same question a day ago.   I can only assume it's a glitch in iTunes 10.5.

  • Firefox opens automatically when I log in?

We have an iMac with four different user accounts. Whenever I log in on my account, Firefox opens automatically, and it seems to take a long time. This suddenly started happening a few weeks ago, and I certainly never tried to make my computer do this. Firefox does not open automatically when any of the other users login. How do I make it stop happening, since I don't always want Firefox right away?

Go to System Preferences>Accounts>the name of your account>Login items at the bottom of the list of accounts and look at your login items. Remove Firefox and it will stop opening when you log on.

  • My mail app opens automatically repeatedly

I'm using my macbook for 1 month and I switched from PC....I'm loving it!!! I had the same problem before installing Leopard.....The installation process was really smooth....But I though that with Leopard the prblem could be solved but I was not. Now Mail opens more frequently.
In reality the problem appeared after a week or so that I bought the computer.....I will ned to recall and go back in time to try to uninstall some of the applications I downloaded (codecs, and some organizing tools)... THIS MIGHT BE THE CAUSE
I tried to call the support line but it seems that Leopard is keeping they busy....It is impossible.

  • How to stop browser and mail applications opening automatically at start up

Since upgrading to Lion, Firefox, Mail and Hogwasher (a newsreader application) all open automatically when the computer starts up. I don't want or need this to happen but cannot find any way of preventing it. I have checked my user login items, but none of these apps is among those listed. Any suggestions why this is happening and how I can change it?

  • When I delete an e-mail, it automatically puts another e-mail in my inbox which says "no sender".  What am I doing wrong and how to get all these off my I-Pad?

When I delete an e-mail, it automatically puts another e-mail in my inbox which reads "No Sender", thus I have numerous e-mails that have not really been deleted.  How can I delete all these e-mails and how to correct the issue of deleting e-mails?

Here is one way of doing it. Left click on picture, list opens click on save as. In next window box apears save as type PNG(*.png). Then go to my pictures and print picture from there. I am not sure what print target is? That is in the list also. That may be how it is directly printed. Never used that short cut. Try it and see. I know for sure saving it to file works.
