Mail, Settings, iChat and other programs not working since 10.6.2 update

Since the 10.6.2 update some programs can't be opened any more.
They have a special sign on the program icon. The error message says something like:
The program "Preview" can not be opened because this type is not supported from a mac computer.

We updated OS 10.8 to 10.8.4 and now cannot use Number, Pages, Keynote, iPhoto, Skpe, DVD player and others. Error message for Pages is (but the same for other software) "Pages cannot be opened because of a problem..."Check with the developer to make sure Pages works with this version of OS X..."
I have done a standard restart and a safe reboot.

Boot in safe mode. This will cause certain caches maintained by the system to be rebuilt.
Safe mode is much slower to boot than normal.
When the login screen appears, reboot as usual (not in safe mode) and test. There's no need to log in while in safe mode.
Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. In that case, proceed as below.
update_dyld_shared_cache -force

Program not working since 8.0.8 update

The application has not worked (connected my mac to windows 7 PC) since the 8.0.8 update. 8.0.9 has since been released and has still not fixed the problem. Any suggestions as to what is wrong? I see this is a common issue with other users.

I am having the same issue and it is becoming a problem for our users as the updated App no longer connects, I have pasted the log from my latest connection attempt below, can you please advise as the current App state needs resolving. Thanks

If you don't tell us what solutions you've already taken, we're probably going to waste a lot of time telling you to do things you've already done.

Mail program not working since upgrading to Leopard 10.5.6

We have loaded the new Leopard system now twice, and both times the Mail program fails to launch from the taskbar, but stays open in the background. The program will not close, and fails to open to even try to check email. It seems other programs are working just fine, but nothing right with Mail. Anyone know if there is a fix to this?

Hello, and welcome to the Discussions.
While the other poster's cited article references certain issues with 10.5.6, they are when updating a system that was already on Leopard. If, as it appears, you were Upgrading an earlier version of OSX, such as 10.4.11, then the relevant article is:

Where an even earlier OSX than Tiger once generated the Mail folder, two other MessageSorting files will need to be removed, also.

Outlook 2010 paste from other programs not working.

Win 7 SP1 x86 w latest patches. Win lang. ENG
Outlook 2010 SP1 x86 w latest patches. Office lang. ENG
Regional (date/time and so on) settings EE (Estonia)
I have about 6 users with same conditions.
When I'm trying to copy - paste from other programs like IE9, Word, Excel I'm unable to paste into Outlook message body.
It just wont paste.
Typically, Outlook shows me "thniking circle" for a millisecond or rarely just hangs.
There are some exceptions:
1. I'm able to paste into To: field
2. I'm able to paste into Subject: field
3. I'm able to paste even into body if I copied text from Notepad.
4. I'm able to paste into body when I copied text from another email.
Additional information:
Outlook default message format "Plain text" (Rich text, HTML - does'nt matter)
What I'v tried so far and results:
1. Repair Office installation trough "Programs and features" - NO LUCK
2. Changed default paste behaviour from other programs to "keep text only" - NO LUCK
3. Used SAFE MODE - this helps, paste SEEMS WORKING correctly. Based on my knowledge, SAFE mode mainly disables Add-ins. OK.
Disabled all Add-ins in normal mode so Outlook shows that "No Active Application Add-Ins" - NO LUCK
So, I'm out of ideas. I think that this problem starts after installing Office 2010 SP1
I don't want to uninstall SP1 because for me it's not a solution (SP1 won't dissapear from the list of updates), ok.. agree, it may be
temporary solution but at the end of the day, there must be something else.
Any ideas?

Rename normailemail.dotm to .old when Outlook is closed and see if it works now.

Thanx, NormalEmail.dotm did not do anything for me but the renaming the Normal.dotm in the same folder did the trick for me. I can paste links again into outlook :)

Safari and Other Browsers Not Working in one account

The account that I use mostly, a standard account, has suddenly lost all web browser function, and I'm not aware of having changed anything recently.
When I try using Safari in the Admin Account it works fine (except for some reason I can't login to my .mac account either, I'm posting this from yet another standard account, which works fine as well). I've tried switching the standard account with the issue to an admin, but get the same results.
The results are that Safari (and any other browser) says it cannot find the server of the website I'm looking for.
I've also tried unplugging our router and plugging it back in to restart it without success.
Has anyone encountered this issue before?

Ok, I have not tried that yet, but before I do, I have a newly discovered wrinkle for you-
I have found that I can browse in the bad account with Safari and Camino (and I suppose anything else), but only if I am going to "secure" pages, that is pages that begin with "https" rather than "http".
Incidentally, thanks for the help on the previous post. That may be what I eventually try.
Does this new detail shed any light on the problem?

Canon Pixma MP-540 (and other) does not work with Cups 1.4

Since Cups 1.4 my printer does not work
its 100% about Cups 1.4 beceause after an downgrade to 1.3 it worked perfect. After upgrade to 1.4 again nothing worked.
So my question, could there be maybe a package called cups-legacy. I heard about other Canon printers + non canon printers which not work with Cups 1.4 in case of binary distributed drivers

I had a similar problem with my MP780 and solved it by adding a custom udev rule. See http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Cup … ermissions. This is my udev rule:

I've updated the assets but scrolling features, widgets do not work.
Now everyone mentioned on the site to try and present a running theme. Everything is working but when I look at the preview does not work when published.
I've used the scroll feature by making a simple theme I've installed but the room did not work.

Live Paint and other tools not working?

Hello,
Most of the time while using Illustrator almost all my tools except for the pen tool do not work, as in the mouse icon turns into this circle with a line through it, and doesn't allow me to do anything on my layer, and it's just one layer nothing else. Why does this happen? I have a drawing that I image traced on illustrator, and would like to paint it now, but I can't use the live paint option. Sometimes the select tool doesn't select anything and it just disappears!
Can anyone help me with this?

I'm a complete beginner to illustrator and I thought it was just another small thing that beginners are not familiar with and that other people can relate? Anyway, I use Illustrator CC on a Mac. Here is a capture I made trying to use the brush tool:

Google and other apps not working

Hi,
I have a BB 8100 pearl that I purchased in the US with T-Mobile. After some time I moved to India and unlocked the phone. Now when I surf the internet, I click on the "t symbol" for accessing the internet. I have already downloaded the apps for google and facebook. But the problem now is that I'm not able to install these apps. Is there any setting that I need to enable/disable to use these apps? I have the icons on my menu screen but there is some problem in running these. I am using Vodafone service in India.
Please help!!

First you said you could not install these apps. Then you said they would not work (which would imply that they installed fine). Can you please clarify? And, while your at it, can you provide the exact error messages that you see? Exact symptoms? Details help...a lot.
Further -- did you, with your new carrier, purchase a Blackberry Data Plan? If not, that could as well explain why the apps won't work.

Liquify and other filters not working...CS 3...

Hey Everyone!
I have two problems with my Photoshop CS3.
1] When I open an image > Filter > Use Liquify filter > Press OK -----Nothing happens, Image reverts back to its original state. Same thing happens with other filters.
Why is this happening?
I re-installed PS and even formatted my PC (Win7, i3) but still it continues. Used mode> RGB/8bit ----but non of any use.
2] Also, PS is creating *_MVM_.tmp files on othe HDD ie on D:/ and E:/
Can anyone please help me?

does adobe use hard coded internetadresses ?

Try one thing - kill the 'pdapp' process from task manager (WIN) or Activity Monitor (MAC) and then again retry to activate.

IChat 4.0.8 with Gtalk not working since 10.5.7 update

My iChat used to work fine before I updated the OS to 10.5.7.
My Jabber list states "connecting..." for a time then says: Could not connect to Jabber ([email protected]) Could not connect to host talk.l.google.com.
Any suggestions would be welcome

No Problem
The .plist (The Jabber one in this case) holds info about your Login such as Ports and Server and SSL or not (all the settings in the Server Settings)
The Password is held in the Keychain as well so this is why it gets filled in the Start Up Screens if they get forced to run again.
If you delete the .plist it reads a default set in the iChat App and resets
Normally deleting this or the corresponding AIM (com.apple.ichat.AIM.plist) does not normally cause the Start Up Screens to appear unless you also delete the main com.apple.ichat.plist at the same time.
Which Account gets shown in the Start Up Screens when there are Accounts set up in the preferences depends on which one is the top one.
If you don't have an AIM Screen Name set up it will go a Jabber one (GoogleTalk)
(the list can be dragged into any order you want in iChat 4)

Photobooth & ichat video not working since 10.4.10 update.

hi
ive had my macbook a little over 12 months, and used photobooth and ichat av dozens of times.
i updated my macbook to 10.4.10 this week and since then when i open photobooth it says there is no camera connected or is in use by another application.
same thing happens when i open ichat, in the preferences it says there is no camera attatched to the computer.
before anyone asks its not a widget issue as ive not installed any new widgets.
is there a fix for this? or am i going to have to restore back to 10.4.9(please no)

its very annoying that apple are releasing updates that do more damage to macs than good.
Okay... Apple did not release a flawed update. If they had, there would tens -if not hundreds- of thousands of people posting here at the Apple Support Discussions that the update had broken something. In fact, there's nothing like that going on here now. What has happened is specific to your computer and your installation of Mac OS X. While the update may have revealed a previous problem that was not visible before, the update itself is not the problem. Or it's possible that you've encountered a problem that by coincidence showed up right after you updated.
Now what you need to do is figure out why you're having problems. You've taken one good troubleshooting step by checking your file directory health with the Disk Utility.
Does the iSight appear in the System Profiler (in your /Applications/Utilities/ folder) under the USB section? You should see the keyboard, the IR receiver for the remote, the Bluetooth module and the "Built-in iSight".
If it doesn't appear, the next step might be to reset the System Management Controller:
