Mail View Message Best Alternative

SInce upgrading my home iMac to Lion, Mail on this computer and on Powerbook with Snow Leopard (because I still want to look at my Quicken 2007 stuff) do not show messages in mail via best alternative unless I go into the view menu for each menu to select best alternative.  They show all the links which historically would load automatically.
Cannot even see attachments.  l also use mobile me, and have not as yet activated the cloud.  How can I get back to viewing all my messages in best form automatically?  I presume this needs to be done via terminal but do not know....
Thanks in advance.
Julius

the recommendation to run
    defaults write com.apple.mail PreferPlainText 0
did not work for me (Mail.app 5.3, Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5)
Other sources suggest
defaults write com.apple.mail PreferPlainText -bool FALSE
This did not work for me either.
In frustration, I opened ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist in Xcode and searched for PreferPlainText.  It seems to (now?) want either YES or NO as a value.
I set it to NO and saved, then relaunched Mail.app.
HTML (Rich Text) mail is back.
I still want to know what I did to make it disappear!

  • Why do I have to use View Message Best alternative to view graphic?

Often in the last 3 years, back to when I was using Leopard, Mail messages would appear in my mailbox which obviously contained graphics or pictures but which didn't show up in the email. (There would be paperclip icon in the right column.)
By going to View>Message>Best Alternative I can get the picture to show up.
Why do I need to do this? I recall in earlier versions of Mail this never happened.
Is there a way in Mail Preferences to change that? I can't find any setting that relates to that.
I am using 10.7 Lion, I have Mail set to Classic Layout. Thanx.

Netflix determines which program their movies are to use. Firefox has no control over it.

  • Mail (4.2) does NOT open as HTML or in Best Alternative

This issue has bveen going on since I upgraded from Tiger (10.4) to Leopard and now Snow Leopard.
when once Mail would open all emails at Best alternative in HTML with graphics, it now never does forcing me to select 'best alternative' from VIEW menu for every message.
I've tried rebuilding mail, deleting my prefs and rebuilding them (very laborious) and still it refuses to view mail in the correct way.. my Ipod does, my iphone does, my laptop doies but my iMac refuses to.
anyone know of the relevant terminal commands I need to fix this!

Hi, I am having the same problem but with a free email certificate from Comodo. I try deleting it from keychain and re-installing it a couples of times, restarting apple mail also, restarting the computer, but nothing seems to do the trick. The only application that seems to recognize it is the Address Book that show a valid certificate in my personal vCard. Does anyone knows what could be wrong?
    Thank you.

  • "Best alternative" by default in Mail application

Is there any way to set up Mail application to view always emails in "best alternative" therefor you can always see the emails in HTML or plain text depending how was prepared in his origin?.
    Thanks.

By default Mail app reads email in plain text. So if you get an email in HTML format you have to change to "best alternative" to see the email correctly.

  • Even though I have LCD font smoothing disabled, Mountain Lion still uses it in PDF views, Safari's location bar, Mail's message view, and the dialogs for mounting encrypted disk images.

Even though I have LCD font smoothing disabled, Mountain Lion still uses it in PDF views, Safari’s location bar, Mail’s message view, and the dialogs for mounting encrypted disk images. Is there any solution to this problem? Also diabled the Smoothing in the SystemPrefs and also via Terminal. Font smoothing is still there. Very annoying, especially in PDF attachments in Apple Mail.

Try feeding Safari a user-defined CSS file with font-smoothing tweaks (including none). The filename and its filesystem location are arbitrary. Use your favorite coding editor.
Safari > Preferences > Advanced > Style Sheet:
Here is an example with all elements uncommented. Pick the one that works best for your Safari viewing and comment out the others:
Preview. Try Preview > Preferences > PDF > Smooth text and line art (uncheck)

  • Mail Viewing Options Gone.  I need to DISABLE automatically marking a message as read!

In Lion, the Mail Viewing options to disable automatically marking a viewed message as read are gone!  I absolutely NEED to disable automatically marking a viewed message as read!  How can I disable this if the option isn't present?  Is there a workaround?

Ok...I take part of what I said back. It was MailActOn by InDev which allowed me to not automatically have a message marked as read.  See http://indev.ca/MailActOn.html for more info.
Apparently the version I had loaded wasn't compatible with Lion Mail.app.  Since updating it, I know have this feature again.

  • I could do this before installing Maverick but cannot do it now.It is nice and convenient how Mac OS X Mail displays messages semi-automatically when you just select them. But wouldn't a bigger view of the mailbox be useful sometimes? Yes, and it's easier

It is nice and convenient how Mac OS X Mail displays messages semi-automatically when you just select them. But wouldn't a bigger view of the mailbox be useful sometimes?
Yes, and it's easier to get than you maybe think.
Hide the Preview Pane and Delete Mail Without Opening It in Mac OS X Mail
To hide the message preview pane in Mac OS X Mail:
Double-click the bar that separates the message pane from the mailbox pane.
    Now, to delete any email:
Highlight the message or messages you want to delete.Hold down the Command key while selecting with the mouse to highlight multiple emails and Shift to highlight a range.
    Press Del.
To get the preview pane back, double-click the same bar again.
Cannot do this now since installing Maverick

  • Mail 4.4 (1082) View- Message- sub menu completely grayed out

When I receive messages I would like to see the complete From information i.e.:
    [email protected]
    What I see is
    Imaniceguy
There is no way I can find to show the complete From info.
The View->Message->sub menu is completely grayed out. Hovering the cursor over the From field shows nothing, view and printing a message likewise shows nothing.
So how do I view the complete From information?

Following up on my previous post.
To see if this issue is isolated to a user rather than the system I created a new user account called "test-user." I logged in as "test-user" and started Mail. I created a new account by entering all the correct account information.
I then have the same issues as my original user account.
    - cannot open a mailbox viewer
    - cannot create a new email message
    - cannot quit mail. Need to force-quit
The fact that this is happening to a brand new user account tells me that this issue is happening at the System level.
Does anyone know the complete list of System related files that are associated with Mail?
Furthermore, the complete list of User related files that are associated with Mail would also be helpful.
Let me know if you have any questions.
Thanks for any insight, wisdom, or guidance!

  • How to customize initial secure e-mail notification message

Can we customize the initial secure e-mail notification message with a company logo or any kind of text?
    The one that says:
You have received a secure message
Read your secure message by opening the attachment, securedoc.html. You will be prompted to open (view) the file or save (download) it to your computer. For best results, save the file first, then open it in a Web browser. To access from a mobile device, forward this message to [email protected] to receive a mobile login URL.
If you have concerns about the validity of this message, contact the sender directly.
First time users - will need to register after opening the attachment.

Basically we want to put our company logo to the top of this message. We already have our company logo added in CRES that shows up when you open the securedoc.html file.
    Thanks!

    Nevermind, I found it.
Mail Policies > Text Resources > Add Text Resource
Set the type as Encryption Notification Template (HTML), edit the HTML and then also add one with a type Encryption Notification Template (text), edit the text. Then go into the Security Services > IronPort E-Mail Encryption > modify the Encryption profile and choose the new Text Resources created above.
Under Text Resources I was also able to create custom bounce messages with variables that display all the relevant information regarding the bounce.

In Mail, my message preview used to be shown to the right side of the messages.  Now it is showing below the messages.  How can I move it back to the right?

Select the Viewing tab in the Mail preferences dialog and uncheck the box marked Use classic layout.

  • Unable to view messages present in inbox/sent/draf...

    Phone: Nokia N8
Unable to view messages available in inbox/Sent items/draft & even reports If i send a SMS to a group say group has more than 5 contacts and click on send button.
No message appears when i open sent items, reports or inbox after messages are sent.
To view messages again i have to restart my phone.

Well, I'm not exactly sure what happened but I think I've got it fixed for now.
FWIW, I went to Mail -> Preferences and clicked on the Accounts -> Advanced tabs. The "Enable this Account" box was checked just like always. I unchecked it, saved the changes, and exited Mail.
Then I went back to Mail -> Preferences -> Accounts -> Advanced, checked the "Enable this Account" box once again and saved the changes. Now it works just fine!

  • Apple Mail viewing "From"?

I used to use Apple Mail in Classic mode which works.  I got a new computer and thought I would try the Apple Mail default view.   It is fine however the list of emails only show the "From" field.  I have many saved mailboxes "On My Mac" and in my out boxes every email shows the "From" field only, which is of course all me.   Useless.
In View : Message Attributes the "To" field is checked, and greyed out, but it does not display on my list of emails still.  It seems obvious to me that I should be able to show both the "From" and the "To" in the email list................

Do you mean the Sent mailbox, or really the Outbox?
My sent shows to, not from. I don't have anything waiting, so no Outbox to check.
I cannot find a way to alter what is displayed for each type of mailbox.

  • Missing Mail view??

I upgraded to Yosemite.  After lots of problems got it done.  Mail works fine.  But yesterday I moved my mail folder and plist from a back up and now I am missing my mail view window.   I have the mail window.  The column with the mail boxes is fine.   Column with the emails showing short previews is fine.
But the next column, where a full message would show up if I selected a message, is blank?
If I double click on a message I get a separate window with the full message.   But what happened to the view column?
