  • Shut Down aborted because Mail will not quit

    Is anyone having this problem:
I've got Mail open and I want to shut down my computer. If Mail is open and I just go directly to shut down (letting shut down automatically close Mail), it fails because Mail will not quit. Shut down is aborted.
Also, sometimes I manually quit Mail, expecting it to already be closed, I shut down the MAC and it will not shut down the Mac even though it looks like I have closed Mail. It comes back and says Shut Down Aborted because Mail failed to close.
I then have to Force Quit Mail.
This has been going on now for several Weeks. I'm starting to get concerned.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    jim

    Hi Otto,
There are many threads on this topic. I have contacted Apple a few times as well and have tried just about everything mentioned on these forums, with little or no help.
The last thing that I tried has reduced Mail's Quit time to about 50 seconds (not enough to abort a shutdown) where previously it simply refused to quit unless Force Quit. The trick in question: Unsubscribe from Apple's RSS feed (which is automatically subscribed to).
In addition, prior to the above change at various troubleshooting steps over several weeks I had also deleted all Notes, ToDos, rebuilt Mailboxes etc. Essentially I have eliminated all additional functionality in Mail, just so that I can use it to send and receive email without a glitch.
Take a look at these threads for some pointers:

  • Mail will not quit  System will not shut down

My computer is locked because mail will not quit and the system will not shut down or restart because mail is still running. Whatever I click on in the mail window I get the thunk sound. I cannot send or receive mail, access the individual mail boxes. I think I might have accidently deleted my mailbox, but it shows in the source list so I am not sure what happened? Anyone have a clue on how to get mail functioning again????

Choose Force Quit from the Apple menu, find the Mail application in the list, and quit it. If it won't quit after this has been done, save all open documents in other applications and use the Activity Monitor in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder to force quit the loginwindow process; you will then be logged back in or returned to the login screen depending on whether automatic login is enabled.

  • My mail will not quit

    my mail will not quit?

I have a similar problem with Mail, but repairing disk permissions did not help.
This might be useful - check out the post by Simpleton1972
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/15719288#15719288
If you are still interested in repairing disk permissions:
    1. open disk utility
if you don't know where disk utility resides: applications -> utilities
or in finder use shift-command-U to open utilities folder
    2. in the left hand column of the window, select the drive on which your OS resides
    3. click on the "repair disk permissions" in the bottom middle of the window

  • Why mail will not quit?

Mail will not quit, and prevents macbook pro from shutting down/restarting.
It will not quit, and does not give the option to force quit.

Looks like the Mavericks upgrade has messed with a lot of people's installations, and some Apple applications (like Mail, or Safari) seem more highly impacted than third-parties'.
In your case, Mail appears to be gobbling up CPU cycles and RAM. You could install this little gem called atMonitor, highlight the Mail line in the main windows, then click on the "renice" button in the top right. You can then give it a "20" value (the lowest possible CPU grade for an application or service in OS X), then click on "Set and remember".
Mail should behave from then on, and close down gracefully when you ask it too, because you put a cap to its CPU usage.
One caveat: atMonitor must be running for the settings to take effect upon reboot. You can add it to your startup items.
There's another app called Dock Dodger that will prevent the atMonitor from showing in your Dock all the time.

  • Mail will not quit, how can I fix this?

Suddenly, mail will not quit and will not show.  mail will not allow  restart . I used disk utility to repair permissions and verify disk, but still have the problem.
I also found a fix by Adamask?, but it did not work. Does anyone have a fix?

I clicked the apple icon, I used :Force Quit then selected mail.  It worked.

  • Mail Viewer Window Does Not Open on Launch. Mail Will Not Quit. MAIL BADGER

<UPDATE> After detailing all of the problems below, I discovered that trashing the Mail Badger bundle solved all of the below problems. I am still posting this just in case anybody else has this problem.
    Problems:
    1. When opening mail.app, the program opens, but it does not launch a Viewer Window. I can open a viewer window manually from the File menu, however.
    2. When quitting mail.app, it will not quit. It does not matter whether I hit command-Q, or Mail>Quit Mail, or right-click on dock icon and click Quit. The only way for me to quit is Force Quit. No matter what Quit command I execute, nothing happens. The Viewer Window does not close. (The Viewer Window will close on command, however, either by clicking the red 'x' or by command-W, or by File>Close.
    3. Cannot send mail from mail.app. Upon clicking "send" on a new email, it just goes to the Outbox and sits there forever. I can try sending the email again from the Outbox, but nothing happens. (I have 4 gmail accounts, with a couple thousand messages between them. There are no problems with port configurations or smtp servers or anything like that - I am fairly certain anyway because nothing has changed w/ regard to the account settings between the time it was working and the time it stopped working.)
    4. After minimizing the Viewer Window, clicking on the mail.app dock icon does not restore the Viewer Window. The only way to restore the Viewer Window is to click on the Viewer window itself in the dock, rather than clicking on the application icon.
Notes: I have installed 10.4.10. I have also installed Safari Beta 3.0.2
I previously installed Safari Beta 3.0, then uninstalled it and upgraded to 3.0.2. I don't recall when the problems started, (under 3.0 or 3.0.2), but they all happened at the same time (rather than one at a time).
I have uninstalled Safari 3 and reverted to Safari 2, but this does not fix the problems.
    I have repaired disk permissions.
I have booted from the OS X Install disk and repaired my startup disk.
I have not had any problems with Safari 3 "hanging" on install, thus corrupting the WebKit, as described in other threads.

I had the same issue and resolution. Spotlight search for "Mail Badger" and deleting everything resolves the issue.
    I'm also running Safari 3.0.2 and 10.4.10...
I've emailed the developer to let him know about it..

  • Mail Will Not Quit and causes finder to hang.

Yesterday my mail app started to give me the spinning wheel while receiving new mail and will not quit no matter how I try to force quit. This includes forcing a quit through the activity monitor, force quitting through the finder and right clicking > force quit. It has since continued and now in its wake other apps have started to randomly hang as well. Even Thunderbird has done the same thing a couple times. Up to this point I have never had any issues with Mail.
I removed any third party add-ons from the bundles folder and no improvement.
I copied the mail folder to the desktop from user/library/ (Which causes the finder to hang but appears on the desktop once I relaunch the finder. This also happened when I copied the mail preference file to the desktop as well)
What the **** is going on here? Should I be worried about worms at this point? Could one corrupt file affect the system this drastically if it is indeed a corrupted file i received?
Anyone have an idea what might be happening here? I really am trying to avoid reinstalling system software here as I have no idea if re-importing my mail folders will yield the same problem.

The new info is really important, and I am glad you reported it. It sounds very much like something corrupted preferences for Mail, but interesting if only one account was lost.
With what you call you secondary account, have there ever been any changes made by the provider, such as a change in server names that you made as an update to account set up info? When that happens the account folder does not get renamed, and when preferences are lost, and you set up as though new, the old account folder is no longer recognized.
Were you using any applications that could have temporarily used nearly all available disk space in some session of work?
I think you need to purge the preferences file for Mail, but we need to know what may be needed to reconnect to both account folders.
Quit Mail, and in the Finder make a Duplicate of the Mail folder that you found in the Home folder, and drag the copy to the Desktop for temporary backup. Next open Home/Library/Preferences and find the com.apple.mail.plist file and either delete it or drag it out to be on the Desktop.
Relaunch Mail, and set up your accounts again, and decline to import anything even though prompted, and Mail should if all else is well rediscover both account folders.
    Please keep us posted.
    Ernie

  • Mail will not quit after sending message with attachment

    B&W G3-450
    OSX 10.2.8
    640 MB RAM
I recently switched to using an email account through AOL Instant Messenger (AIM.com). The only way to connect to their service is via IMAP. I have all the correct settings, I can send and receive email no problem.
However, when I attempt to send a message that contains an attachment (.zip, jpeg, anything) the email will send just find. The problem is when I try to quit mail it wont' respond. I can continue to send or receive after sending the message but it will not quit. Trying to log out does not work either as it reports a problem with Mail that prevents closing the session. The only thing I can do is force quit mail.
The next time I use mail it works fine and there are no problems. The only issue seems to be this hanging problem. I've never experienced this problem using POP3 accounts.
    Any suggestions?

  • TS3276 Mail will not quit

Mail will not give the option to quit.  Cannot turn off computer without closing mail but it will not highlight that option so that it can be clicked on.  Any suggestions?

Choose Force Quit from the Apple menu and close it from there.

  • HT5361 My mail will not "quit"

My mail program will not close out ( i have tried to shut down my coputer ).
The "quit mail" is not highlighled when I use the drop down menu.
I also can not pull my mail up, now.
    Any suggestions?

Force quit Mail by using command - option/alt - esc or by choosing Force Quit under the  menu.
In Finder, hold down the option/alt key while selecting Go from the Finder menu bar. Select Library. or select Go to Folder and paste in ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail. Select Containers/com.apple.mail. Move the folder com.apple.mail to your desktop. You must move the entire folder, not just the contents.
Re-launch Mail and test. If the problem is solved, recreate any required Mail settings and import any emails you want to save from the folder on the desktop. You can then put the folder in the Trash. If the problem remains, return the folder to where you got it replacing the one that is there.

You can make your user library permanently visible with the following Terminal Command.
    chflags nohidden ~/Library/

  • Problem with I mail  -- will not quit properly

All of a sudden today, I am unable to close Mail.  I quit mail and the little dot remains under the icon and I am unable to reopen mail unless I force quit the program or shut down the computer and restarting again.  How an I check for problem?

Try selecting Mail>Mailbox>Rebuild in turn for each of the Mail accounts.
Or this, which will do all accounts at once. But if you use this, first go to your home folder Library and make a backup copy of mail by option-click dragging the entire Mail folder to the Desktop.
