Mail won't detect IMAP sub folders

I have several subfolders in my INBOX (INBOX.read, INBOX.sent, INBOX.todo, ...). Mail.app doesn't detect those sub folderds on startup. Only way to access the sub folders is to create new sub folder for INBOX. When I close the Mail.app or lose network connection, I have to create again new sub folder to be able to expand the INBOX.
This is really annoying and makes Mail.App unusable for me because Spotlight reindexes the subfolders every time When Mail.App detects them. Reindexing takes about 10 minutes and 100% of my processor time...
I have been told that this bug has existed for a long time . Why doesn't it get fixed? What is the recommended workaround?
15.2" PowerBook   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

Thanks for the clarification.
Please confirm that About Mail reports version 2.0.5?
Make sure to have quit Thunderbird and Mail, and then in the Finder open Home/Library, and duplicate the Mail folder, and drag the copy to your Desktop, strictly for temporary backup. Next open the original Mail folder, and find the IMAP account folder for this account, and delete it. Empty the trash following this.
Next, open Home/Library/Preferences, and find the com.apple.mail.plist file, and drag it to the Desktop (where you will most likely later delete it).
Start Mail, and re-enter/set up your account (this should have resulted in Mail opening as new -- if not post back immediately about that), and DECLINE to import anything, even if prompted to. Test, and let me know what you experience with the issue.
This procedure should have little risk, since 1) you are using IMAP and messages on the server are not lost. 2) On My Mac mailboxes are not impacted, and 3) you have made a backup just in case.
It is possible that your particular IMAP provider and Mail have some incompatibilities, but I am using two IMAP at the moment, and both work. However, they each appear to treat folders differently.
All the best.

  • Switch to BT Mail has deleted all my sub-folders

I have just moved from BT Yahoo to BT Mail, following the instructions BT provided. On my PC I use Windows Live Mail. Previously, all my (thousands of) emails were organised into numerous sub-folders dropping down from the Inbox tab, so I knew where everything was. These have all been deleted so all my emails are now in one big mass in the Inbox. Also, I don't have any emails received prior to 2010, and I'm sure there were some there before. Can anyone help?

If it was a POP3 account, which I suspect it was because most folk set up Windows Live Mail as a POP3 account, you will have lost all your sub folders when you deleted it.  Luckily you still had the emails on the server which enabled them to be downloaded when you re-made the account. It would however not remake the folder structure as this was on your PC within the email account that you deleted.
You could try searching for the emails by going to Start > Search > type .eml into the search box. This should find all the Windows Live Mail emails on your computer.
If it was an IMAP account, this would have replicated the folder structure that was set up on the email sever unlike a POP account folders which are on your PC. When you deleted and re-made the account this would have set up the folder structure as it was previously because it replicates the folders on the email server. Because it has not done this is another reason why I suspect your deleted account was a POP3 account. If it was IMAP you would have the folders that you had previously.
It may be that if it was an IMAP account that you had, the folders could still set up although I have my doubts. You could try a computer restart to see if it sets them up.
As regards the pre 2010 emails, they may have been deleted from the server by you at some point so they would not now be there to be downloaded.

  • Mail won't see iPhoto Library folders

When trying to send an attachement in Mail:
    1) Click on "Attach" paperclip icon.
    2) Click on "Pictures" frame icon.
    3) Click on "iPhoto Library" icon.
    4) "iPhoto" icon appears, but clicking on it does not make sub-folders appear in the next column.
How do I get to a specific folder or photo stored in my iPhoto Library using the "attach" icon in Mail?

Easiest way to email iPhoto Library photos is:
    Open iPhoto app
Select photo(s) you want to send
Select "Share" at top of window
    Select "Email"
If you want photos to be icons, right click photo in email window and select icon. You should try to keep the email under 5 MB. If it is larger, use the selections for size in the bottom border of the email.

  • Thunderbird crashed while compacting folders, now I'm missing all my old mail in one of my sub-folders

I'm using Thunderbird 31.1.2 with MacOS 10.8.5. After the compacting folders failed I saw all the sub-folders restored except one, which came up empty. I've tried restoring the folder but none of the old files seem to exist there. There has never been a problem with T-bird crashing before this. Is there an archive I can find the deleted files in to restore?

  • NOW-Yahoo Mail won't move messages to folders. Help, please?

    Original iPhone with 2.0 software . . .
When I try to move a message (from the inbox, for example) into one of my yahoo Mail folders, I get this message:_"Unable to Move Message."_
Is this happening to you? Is there a solution??
    Thank you for your help.
    Allan

Have you tried deleting the Yahoo account and readding it? Was it working earlier(with the update)? I know Yahoo has been very up and down with various things so possibly there might be a server related problem if it just started.
You could also possibly try to reset the network settings and then try to move the messages.

  • Why can't I sync my facebook invitations to my iCal?  My Mac Mail won't detect the date/time on the email anymore.

I have been trying to sync my facebook invitations to my iCal and no longer able to do this through my Mac Mail.  When I would receive a facebook invitaiton through my comcast email, I used to be able to hover my mouse over the date/time of the invitation and then I could easily "Add to iCal" or "See Date in iCal", but am no longer able to do so.  I can still add other invitations, just not the facebook invitations.  Any ideas?

You can get your photos off your phone.  If they are all in Camera Roll just import them to your new computer (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083).  If some of them were synced to your iphone from your computer (i.e., in photo library) just use an app like PhotoSync and send them to your new computer wirelessly.  For that matter, you can sync your phone with your new computer without losing your data and settings if you carefully follow this guide: https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3141.  Your only issue will be non-purchased music on your phone which is not in your new iTunes library, which will require 3rd party software such as Touch Copy to transfer from your phone to iTunes (or you will have to rip you CDs again to import them).

  • Mail won't receive IMAP emails since ML upgrade

I upgraded to Mountain Lion this morning and havne't been able to receive any emails from my IMAP account since. I can send emails fine. I can receive all emails on my iPhone, just not my MBP.

Now that you have accessed as POP, you might lose messages if you again removed the account, depending upon whether the POP setting was to remove after downloading?  So careful, now.
What Port was used when set up as IMAP -- was it IMAP type as shown in the Preferences?

  • Sub-folders and synching from hotmail/windows live mail

    Hi there
I have a hotmail account which I use via my home laptop through Windows Live mail. I have various sub-folders in my hotmail which also appear in my Windows Live mail.
Whilst I can access my inbox and sent items from my iphone I cannot see my subfolders which I need to distribute a large amount of mail to.
Can anyone tell me how I can get these folders to appear on my iphone (3 - not sure which OS).
Also, when I delete items from my iphone they do not delete on my hotmail/live mail. Is there a way of addressing this?
    Thanks!!

To do what you want, you need the mail account to be set up as IMAP, which syncs the contents of the server with your device. It sounds like yours is set up as POP, which doesn't work that way.
I've lost touch with Hotmail, but I saw this which might help (you'll need to set up a new mail account on the phone to make it work)

  • Unable to view Inbox sub-folders in Mail on OSX Mavericks

    Hello,
I'm working with two Exchange accounts that have the same problem.  Both accounts have sub-folders underneath the Inbox folder.  After upgrading to OSX Mavericks, the sub-folders are no longer visible within Mail. If I go on the web and mark a mail in one of these sub-folders as unread, the unread count on the Inbox increases, however the mail along with the subfolder it is in, are still not visible.  Additionally, if I right-click on the Inbox folder and choose "Get Account Info", and switch to "Messages on Server", I can see the sub-folders listed there, the number of messages in it, and the size of the folder. If I click on the folder within this window and choose "Show Messages" it opens a new, blank, Mail window.
Does anyone have any ideas about how to get these folders to show again?  I tried rebuilding to Inbox to no avail.  I am trying to find a solution that doesn't involve recreating the account in Mail, if possible, as some of the mailboxes I have to deal with are extremely large, and to re-download them all from the Exchange server would take a very long time.
Thanks in advance to anyone who might be able to help.

    Hi all
    Same here!
The folders still show up on my iPad and iPhone AND i can still move emails into the folders. So in the context of "move email" all the folders show up. But as above, no email folders in the main menu of Mail. I am using an Exchange server too and already setup everything fresh from the start but it did not solve the problem. Looks like nobody tested upgrading an existing Exchange/Apple Mail setup to Mavericks...maybe because Exchange is to exotic. ;-)
Hope this gets fixed soon and I hope it raises some new ideas in terms of QA!

Mail seems to know it's there, as you described, but for some reason just doesn't display it.  Honestly, it seems like someone just made an oversight and forgot to put the little arrow in to let us expand folders that have sub-folders.

  • Sub Folders Arrows not turned down When Mail.app Launched

    Hello,
I imported some of my Email from Entourage. I have a mail folder "Companies", and several sub folders inside of that. Some of these folders I like to always have open (the little arrow to the left of the folder name turned down).
However, every time I re-launch Mail.app, all the sub folders arrows including "Companies" itself is closed or "turned-up".
Is there anyway to make this "stick" to whatever I had before I quit Mail.app?
    Thanks, Scott K.

    Hello Scott.
This information is stored in com.apple.mail.plist, so you may try re-creating that file in case there is something wrong with it.
Verify/repair the startup disk first (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
After having fixed all filesystem issues, if any, and making sure that there’s enough space available on the startup disk (a few GB, plus the space needed to make a backup copy of the Mail folder), try this:
    1. Quit Mail if it’s running.
    2. Make a backup copy of the ~/Library/Mail folder, just in case something goes wrong while trying to solve the problem. You can do this in the Finder by dragging the folder to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down, for example. This is where all your mail is stored.
    3. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Preferences/. Locate com.apple.mail.plist and move it to the Desktop (to be deleted if this fixes the problem).
    4. If you have a .Mac account and .Mac synchronization of Mail data was enabled either in Mail > Preferences > General or in System Preferences > .Mac, that will interfere with any attempt to get rid of *.plist files. If that‘s the case, after having followed the previous steps, but before opening Mail again, you should go to System Preferences > .Mac > Advanced, click Reset Sync Data, and choose the appropriate options to reset the Mail data stored on the .Mac server with the data locally stored on the computer, i.e. sync data must flow from the computer to the .Mac server so that the same data is deleted from the server as well.
    5. Open Mail. You’ll have to set up your non-.Mac accounts from scratch all over again. If given the option to import existing mailboxes or something like that, don’t. Just enter the account information and Mail will automagically rediscover the data in ~/Library/Mail/ when done.
You’ll also have to re-configure most of your settings in Mail > Preferences. For spam-related security reasons, the first thing you should do is go to Preferences > Viewing and disable Display remote images in HTML messages if it’s enabled.
You may also need to re-install or re-enable any Mail plug-ins you have installed for Mail to recognize them.
    6. As a side effect of re-creating com.apple.mail.plist, Mail might rename Outbox (which is where messages waiting to be sent are stored) to Delivered. The name of that mailbox is actually a misnomer, as it would contain messages (if any) that couldn’t be delivered for some reason. You can delete that mailbox if you wish.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder. You can easily locate any of the folders referred to in this post by copying the folder path here, doing Go > Go to Folder in the Finder, and pasting the folder path there.

  • Exchange & Push Mail Issues (Inbox only - not other sub-folders)

got everything to work without too many problems.. I did however run into one major problem which seems like a deal killer for me..
I have pre-existing mail sorting rules on my Exchange server.. basically I have a general INBOX with several sub-folders (let's call the CLIENT-A, CLIENT-B, CLIENT-C)..
This means the Inbox looks like:
    /inbox/
    /inbox/client-a/
    /inbox/client-b/
    /inbox/client-c/
My problem is that since the mail is being pre-sorted at the mail sever directly into the sub folders, I am not seeing the NEW mail (or related marker on Mail App icon) except when it get mail that goes in the INBOX.. only email that ends up in INBOX get PUSHed.. mail that is routed to CLIENT-A or CLIENT-B requires me to manually click on their respective folders to have Mail App PULL the mail in..
Am I missing something? Can this be resolved?

I really hope Steve can get the engineering folks to spend some cycles on this.. PUSH should aply to all folders, not just the inbox...

  • Apple tv 2.2 wont sync sub-folders of photos

Since I've updated the atv to 2.2, my photos that are organized into sub-folders within a folder won't sync.
i like to keep my photos out of iPhoto, nicely organized into one Photos folder with one subfolder for each album. Till 2.1, i could goto iTunes -> Apple TV -> Photos tab, select the main Photos folder there and all the subfolders containing photos would show up. I could select all and the subfolders would sync to Apple TV. With 2.2 , this doesn't happen. I have all the options in iTunes but when i sync, it just shows Syncing and nothing happens. If i select one of the subfolders directly that contains photos, it syncs. That means 2.2 won't sync from sub-folders!! for me, it renders the device useless !
Is there a way to revert back to 2.1 ?

I am also having the same problem. My original Apple TV was version 1. The earlier version of this ATV and Itunes was able to sync photos in nested or sub folders direct from the hard drive and not using any photo program. I upgraded to 2.2 and kept the old files on my ATV and did not sync to Itunes for a long time but when I decided to sync all of my nested photo folders on the ATV were deleted and I could not re sync. I spoke to apple care support today and was advised the programming was not set up to read from sub folders. However Itunes and the apple TV directions say otherwise. I suggested to Apple they consider fixing the programming to follow what Itunes and the ATV manuals say. This is a very desired feature to have.

  • Email and sub-folders

    Hey!
I have an iPhone 4s and I sync my email from an exchange server. I have mail that is delivered to sub-folders in my inbox but these emails do not appear on my phone but I can browse to the folders and see the emails. Is there for these emails to appear in inbox on the phone.
    Thanks in advance!

The only way to get them to appear in the inbox on your phone is to stop the rule on the server that is delivering them to sub-folders. They only show up in the inbox if they are actually in the inbox.

  • HT201320 Does my email service provider have to provide the ability for me to create an IMAP email account in order for me to create Sub-folders within Apple Mail?

Hi, Apple Mail provides a function to create sub-folders within my mailbox so that I can group emails of similar subjects or from the same sender. My service provider only provides POP email protocol and the New Folder button does not appear in my Apple Mail account for that service provider. Icloud provides the opportunity for the iPad user to select between POP and IMAP. I can select IMAP and the New Folder button appears allowing me to create sub-folders within the icloud email account. Does this mean I cannot create sub-folders in my email account unless my service provider provides customers with the option of creating an IMAP email account?
This appears to be a problem for quite a few Apple Mail users, but service providers appear reticent to provide a response other than 'use Microsoft Exchange / Hotmail, Google GMail, or some other third party email service provider'. This is why I have chosen icloud as my email service provider. It is Apple and therefore Apple supports it. I have been a Telstra customer for over 15 years and they informed me today, strongly, that they support their own products and services, not Apple products, even though Telstra sell them. When I asked the Telstra Customer Support Manager whether they support Telstra customers, I was informed 'no, because the Telstra customer is not a Telstra product or service'. I have since cancelled my Telstra email account and am in the process of cancelling all of my Telstra services.

Yes. That is what it means. You need an IMAP account in order to create sub folders on the iPad.
