Mail Won't Import All Emails

I just upgraded from an iMac G4 running 10.3.9 to a SR MacBook Pro with 10.4.9. I used the Migration Assistant to move my mail, but not all of the messages transferred. I also tried copying ~/Library/Mail manually but got the same results. When Mail imports the messages, the progress bar has the correct number (### of 2167), but it stops midway and I end up getting only 532 messages. Any suggestions?

The conversion from Mail 1.x to Mail 2.x is broken. Here’s an example of the most common variant of this problem and how to proceed in those cases:
Just upgraded, Most of my old Inbox is gone!
Your problem, however, is different in that you don’t even get an incomplete conversion. If Mail stalls during the conversion process, you may try to identify the mailboxes that Mail is choking on, quit Mail, move those mailboxes out of ~/Library/Mail/ (e.g. to the Destkop), and trash any Envelope Index-named files you may see in ~/Library/Mail/, so that Mail re-creates the index and tries to import the remaining mailboxes again, then manually import the problematic mailboxes as Other.
Alternatively, you may want to set up Mail from scratch and manually import your mail back afterwards. This would allow you to use Mail normally while solving the problem of importing the old mail as you see fit:
1. Quit Mail if it’s running.
2. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/. Move (not copy) the entire Mail folder out of there, to the Desktop.
3. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Preferences/. Locate com.apple.mail.plist and move it to the Desktop.
4. Open Mail and set it up again from scratch. If given the option to import existing mailboxes or something like that, don’t. Just enter the account information and check that everything works fine.
5. You’ll have to re-configure all your settings in Mail > Preferences. For spam-related security reasons, the first thing you should do is go to Preferences > Viewing and disable Display remote images in HTML messages if it’s enabled.
6. Do File > Import Mailboxes and follow the instructions to import your mail from the old Mail folder that’s now on the Desktop. Import the Mailboxes folder first, then each of the POP-username@mailserver account folders, if any.
There are two ways to import Mail 1.x mailboxes into Mail 2.x. The obvious one is importing them as Mail for Mac OS X. But Mail 1.x stored mail in standard mbox format plus some additional support files, and this allows Mail 1.x mailboxes to also be imported as Other, i.e. as generic mailboxes in standard mbox format.
Importing as Mail for Mac OS X produces the best results when it works, because it takes into consideration all the files in the mailboxes, not just the mbox files where the messages are stored, and hence, allows information such as status flags to be preserved. Importing as Other, on the other hand, may work in cases where importing as Mail for Mac OS X doesn’t, because it looks at the mbox files only, ignoring the support files which is what Mail 2.x usually chokes on, but precisely because of that, information such as status flags is lost and previously deleted messages may reappear.
Hence, you may try importing as much as you can as Mail for Mac OS X, then import the problematic mailboxes as Other.
Note that what Mail asks for when importing depends on the format chosen. Mail always asks for the folder that contains the “things” to be imported. If Mail for Mac OS X is chosen as the data format, the “things” to be imported are the *.mbox folders, so you must choose the folder that contains them, not the *.mbox folders themselves. On the other hand, if Other is chosen as the data format, the “things” to be imported are the mbox files, so you must choose the *.mbox folders that contain them in that case.
Note also that some of the mailboxes now on the Desktop may have already been partially converted to the new *.emlx format during the previous (failed) attempt to convert them in place. If you tell Mail 2.x to import as Mail for Mac OS X a mailbox that already has a Messages folder, Mail will simply ignore the Mail 1.x files present there. If the mailbox was successfully converted to the new format, that’s fine, but if the conversion was incomplete, that’s not what you want.
As a result of doing all the above, some messages may be duplicated. Andreas Amann’s Mail Scripts has a Remove Duplicates script that you may find useful.
If all is well and you don’t miss anything, the files on the Desktop can be deleted, although you may want to keep them for a while, just in case.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder. You can easily locate any of the folders referred to in this post by copying the folder path here, doing Go > Go to Folder in the Finder, and pasting the folder path there.

  • Mail won't import all Entourage mail-- any ideas?

    Hello all,
I started to import my mail from Entourage. Everything went in pretty much fine, except for the SENT folder. It would import, and then when I looked, it was all Sent mail but only up to Oct 18,2008. I then deleted that "Import/Sent" mailbox in Mail.app, then tried to Import again, just checking the "Sent Mail" box when it asks you "which items do you want to import from Entourage", etc...
But still, it would import a huge sent-mail folder, but lacking emails from Oct 18-Dec 10 2008.
Any thoughts on why? Any suggestions on how to just get those SPECIFIC emails from Entourage and put them directly into Mail.app? Is there any way to get those specific ICS files from Entourage and convert them into Mail?
    Thanks- Samantha

  • Mail won't import all messages after Apple ID reset

    Hello,
Might not be in the right forum but I thought I would start here first. I had to sign out of my Apple ID on my iMac and it would not let me sign out unless I agreed to delete Mail from my Mac, which I did, since I figured once I signed back in, the messages would return. When I signed back in, only a few messages came back into Mail. The others are still on iCloud, but I can't figure out had to get Mail to "import" the rest of the emails. Is there a setting I am missing? Thoughts?
    Thanks!

Try re-indexing the mailboxes. This can take awhile if you have a lot of mail.

  • My iPod won't import all the songs on iTunes

My iPod Classic won't import all the songs in iTunes. Any ideas?

    Hello Tony,
It sounds like you are trying to transfer music from your iPod to your computer.
Are the songs that are transferring over iTunes purchases?  Music imported from a CD or other source that is on your iPod cannot be transferred to a computer from your iPod, but music purchased from the iTunes Store can.  You can find more information at the following link:

I want to import all the mails in my webmailbox into thunderbird. How do i do that?

    Hi!
To import your mail, launch Thunderbird, click the Menu icon, and then select "New Message" > "Get a new Mail Account". Click "Skip this and use my existing email". Enter your email information and you'll be done!

  • Mail server automatically cc all email for user to other acct but group...

Back on April 2007, David_X answered this question:
How to have the mail server automatically cc all e-mail for user to other accounts, (gmail, hotmail, etc). Here is the old post that explains that:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=4357149&#4357149
What I did not catch at the time was if you setup a Group, one of three ways, the cc step no longer works. There is a fourth way but it is not practical. Creating local groups on individual Macs.
    *Group method 1 per David_X:*
Use edited group files on the server.
The following sends to members of groups but does not show all recipients in the received message...
    In /etc/postfix/aliases, add...
    groupname: :include:/path/to/groupname.txt
In a file called groupname.txt (using plaintext editor)...
    [email protected]
    [email protected]
    Reload aliases...
    sudo newaliases
    sudo postalias aliases
    sudo postfix reload
Mail sent to [email protected] gets passed to amavisd once, before then being relayed out for each individual recipient.
    *Group method 2 per David_X:*
    Make a user, e.g., "accounts"
In mail settings, select 'Forward' option and enter the group members' email addresses, comma separated e.g.,
    [email protected],[email protected]
This gets a bit 'long' for lots of members.
The email then gets sent to each of the people in this list.
*Group method 3 that I just discovered:*
Create a group in Workgroup Manager.
Drag the users you want in it.
    Save.
    Test sending to that group.
Best part, the group name shows up in Address Book if you have LDAP setup.
So I have setup all three. If I send an email to any type of group, they work.
    The problem:
If one of those members in the group also has a BCC setup to Gmail or any other outside email, they never get the e-mail copied out to the external account.
    Example:
I send an email to [email protected]. He gets the email there and also a copy at his Gmail account.
If I send an email to the Sales group that jsmith belongs to, he gets the email there but nothing at the Gmail account.
It looks like the mail server processes the "aliases" file and skips the "Recipient_bcc" file that handles the forwards.
Is there a way to have my cake and eat it too? David_X your thoughts also?
    Thanks everyone!

    Bump.
Short version. Sales guy has a Gmail account he wants his e-mail copied to also.
Send e-mail directly to his Xserve account, he gets it there and it gets sent on to his Gmail account.
Send an e-mail to the sales Group that he is a member of, he gets it there but it never gets sent out to the Gmail account.
    Ideas?

  • IPhoto won't import all photos at once

I just got iPhoto 08 and also got a new camera. The iPhoto will not import all the photos from the camera (more than 100), but will importa a few selected, seems to accept about 5-6 max. Also, after doing that a couple of times, it won't import any more. It seems that if I start all over, unmount the camera and start all over, it will again allow me to import a few more photos. I still have 96 more to go. This is just awful. With the old iPhoto and the old camera, it was just so easy to import all the photos from my camera at once. I have over 5000 photos on the computer. I am really frustrated. I did not see this question addressed on the discussion board, and I'm wondering what I should do. The camera is a Sony Cybershot DSC-W80.

    Lisa C:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. I don't know of a solution but as a workaround you can use Image Capture, its preferences set which application to open when a camera is connected, to upload to a folder on the Desktop and then import the folder. If you title the folder as you want the Event to be titled it will create the Event with that name.
I use a card reader to do the same as it will save the camera's ports and battery and avoid possible upload aborts due to low battery and large number of photos to upload.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

    Hi Rob.
The conversion from Mail 1.x to Mail 2.x is broken. Take a look at the following thread to better understand the problem:
Help! "You need to take this account online in order to download it."
More specifically, if this is a POP account, the following procedure should allow you to fix the Inbox problem. A similar procedure should allow you to fix other mailboxes that might also be affected. If the problematic mailbox in your case is Drafts, for example (do you really have 3000+ drafts?), just apply the procedure to Drafts.mbox instead of to INBOX.mbox:
    1. Quit Mail if it’s running.
    2. Make a backup copy of the ~/Library/Mail folder, just in case something goes wrong while trying to fix the problem. You can do this in the Finder by dragging the folder to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down, for example. This is where all your mail is stored.
    3. Create a new folder on the Desktop and name it however you wish (e.g. Inbox Old). It doesn’t need to have an .mbox extension.
    4. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/POP-username@mailserver/INBOX.mbox/.
    5. Move the files mbox and Incoming_Mail out of INBOX.mbox, into the Inbox Old folder just created on the Desktop. These files contain all the messages that were in the mailbox before the upgrade to Tiger, and maybe even some messages that had been deleted. mbox is the most important. Incoming_Mail may or may not be present.
    6. Move any strangely-named Messages-T0x... folders to the Desktop (not into the Inbox Old folder). These folders are to be deleted after fixing the problem. They are temporary folders created during an import or an indexing process, and Mail should have deleted them when done. Their presence is a clear indication that something didn’t work as expected. If you’ve been using Mail after the conversion and have already tried to fix the problem by rebuilding the mailbox or something like that, they might contain messages that are neither in Messages proper nor in the mbox file, so keep them around until the problem is fixed.
    7. Move everything else within INBOX.mbox, except the Messages folder, to the Trash.
The result of the above should be that INBOX.mbox contains the proper Messages folder only, and the Inbox Old folder on the Desktop contains the mbox and Incoming_Mail (if it exists) files only. Now, proceed as follows:
    8. Open Mail.
    9. The account’s Inbox should properly display in Mail as many messages as *.emlx files are in ~/Library/Mail/POP-username@mailserver/INBOX.mbox/Messages/. If that’s not the case, select the mailbox in Mail and do Mailbox > Rebuild.
    10. In Mail, do File > Import Mailboxes, choose Other as the data format, and follow the instructions to import the Inbox Old folder that’s on the Desktop.
As a result of doing the above, some messages may be duplicated now. Andreas Amann’s Mail Scripts has a Remove Duplicates script that you may find useful for that.
Do with the imported mail whatever you wish. You may move the messages anywhere you wish and get rid of the imported mailboxes afterwards.
If all is well and you don’t miss anything, the files on the Desktop can be deleted, although you may want to keep them for a while, just in case.
You may want to take a look at the following article (also referenced in the thread I mentioned at the beginning of this post) to learn what you might have done before upgrading to minimize the risk of this happening, and what you may do after fixing the problem to avoid similar issues from happening in the future. DON’T do now what the article suggests, though, as that would make things worse in the current situation:
    Overstuffed mailbox is unexpectedly empty
Ask for any clarifications or if you need further assistance.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder, i.e. ~/Library is the Library folder within the user’s home folder.

  • Urgent! Help! Mail wants to import all my messages!

For some reason, Mail just quit. WHen I restart, it says it needs to "import all your messages. This may take a few minutes." My mail is an IMAP account synced with Gmail and it contains over a hundred thousand messages. This happened once before and if I remember rightly it took not minutes but A DAY AND A HALF to import my messages.
Can they really all have been deleted?  WHy would it suddenly need to import messages that I never deleted? I do all my business through Mail, I can't have this happening. Surely there's a way to find that the messages are still there?
Does anyone know how to fix this?

It's caused by a corrupt index file that has to be rebuilt. If this is happening repeatedly, you may have some corrupt messages, or you may have installed a third-party system modification that interferes with Mail.
    Back up all data.
    1. Triple-click the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Mail/Bundles
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Open
from the contextual menu. A folder may open, or you may get an error message that the item can't be found. Either result is normal. If the folder does open and has contents, move the contents to the Desktop. Relaunch Mail and test. If there's no change, put the contents of the folder back and quit Mail again.
    2. Repeat with this line:
    /Library/Mail/Bundles
This time you may be prompted for your login password when you remove the items. Make sure they're removed from the folder and not just copied to the Desktop. If necessary, copy them first and then move the originals to the Trash.

  • Won't import, all album artwork gone

Hair being pulled out as we speak. For some reason when recently opening ITunes, every single tune had been copied. The copy did not play but instead said it could not locate the tune. So I went thru the entire list and deleted each of the "bad" copies. Checked and every tune left is OK. Save for the artwork disappearing in each one. That's not the big issue.
I cannot get the program to even recognize a CD has been placed in the slot. When I go to the "Import" setting, it says there is nothing in the player. Windows Media Player reads the disc right away and gets to playing, no issue. But I have searched, gone thru all the options and still nothing from ITunes.
I have gone to Preferences>Advanced. General and importing all seem to be correctly checked and still nothing.
And now here's another one that juts cropped up. When playing from the ITunes menu, only one song plays at a time and the playback stops. Have looked thru everything and checked anything that may address this to no avail.
FYI I have checked the the songs playing back and being read from the proper hard drive.
As the sage might say...HELP! Thanks.

I just bought my iPod nano 3 days ago Itunes installed fine. I have a LARGE mp3 collection (around 2800 songs). When I drag the top level folder for the entire collection to the library in the source window iTunes begins to import all of the tracks, some of which have to be converted. This all appears to work fine but when the import is done, I am missing TONS of tracks from my collection. Full albums are no longer full, etc. Has anyone experienced this or something related? You said 2800, it can only hold 500 or 1000 depending on your model
