Mail Won't Open (Just Installed OS 10.5)

I installed OS 10.5 a few days ago. After doing that, everything worked for a few days. But now, I'm getting a bunch of issues. Most notably, I can't open Mail. It just bounces up and down for a bit. Then I get an error message:
Symbol not found: __useStaticData
What does that mean?
Apparently, it's supposed to be in
/System/Library/Frameworks/Message.framework/Versions/B/Message
But I have no idea what any of this means.

Ryan,
I think we're getting close to the solution of the problem. I have two applications folders. One applications folder is on my internal hard drive. The other applications folder is in my account folder.
Both applications folders contain a "Mail" program as well as a "Safari," an "iTunes," etc., etc..
I just opened the "Mail" program on my hard drive, since the one in my account folder doesn't work. It asked me to input all my pertinent information, which I did.
Then it opened up, but it only had some new mail messages, not all my old folders. So, it works, but I can't access my thousands and thousands of saved e-mail messages. I presume they're floating around somewhere on my computer. Perhaps in that plist file I removed from the library and saved to the desktop???
What do I do next?
Thanks,
Seth

  • Mail won't open after installing Lion 10.7.4

    Hi at all,
I have just downgraded my Mac Book Pro - June 2010 from OS X 10.8 - DP3 12A206J to Lion OS X 10.7.4, as soon as I started checking everything's ok I found out Mail's not working anymore, with the following error showing up. "Mail cannot be opened because of a problem" Check with the developer to make sure Mail works with this version of Mac OS X.
I have tried deleting all accounts from System Preferences, checking the /Library/Mail files, reinstalling Lion, but no luck.
Here're the first lines of the log. Hope someone can help me.

What a super, super pain.  I upgraded from 10.8.3 to 10.8.4 and the MBP (MacBookPro4,1) would not start, except in Safe Mode.  I tried downloading the update from Apple - didn't help.  I tried the Combo update - didn't help. Couldn't find anything on the discussion boards, except that it was a problem with the graphic drivers.
Finally decided to do what lgiraldin did - wiped the HD, installed 10.6.3 from my origional DVD, migrated my data from the copy of 10.8.4 I had made, the upgraded to 10.7.  Everything seems to be inplace except Mail would crash.  Re-installed 10.7.5 from the recovery disk but it didn't help.  Replacing MAIL with Pacifist didn't help.
I also found that my timemachine backup could not be used for recovery as it is on an Iomega network drive - the recovery partition does not allow me to mount the Iomega.
I found an installation of 10.7.5 that I had on another disk.  Booted from that, copied the folder to the MacBook Pro HD, and now mail opens and runs correctly.  Better than 10.8.3 too.  In 10.8.3 it would often take 100% cpu and lock the entire computer for 1 or 2 seconds.
Thanks to Terry Mahoney and ApplesDownfall especially as I didn't have to wipe and re-install everything a THIRD time.  I've wasted most of three days because there was no way to back out the update.  Now I know that I have to create a Carbon Copy clone of my HD before any update.   I'm going to stick with 10.7 until **** freezes over!

  • FCE Won't Open - just installed

I work with a school that is trying to install FCE 4. It seems to install just fine, and when they open it, it starts to load, but then suddenly disappears and nothing opens. They made sure the computer (iBook) met the necessary specs, and other schools I work with have installed it successfully on similar iBooks. We have tried opening it directly from the applications folder instead of the dock to no avail.
After reading some of the other posts, I will suggest to them trashing the preferences, however since they just installed the software and have not used it yet, it doesn't seem to me that restoring the application to it's default settings will change anything, so I'm not optimistic this will help.
Any other thoughts on what could be causing this?
    Thanks!

I had a problem that sounds very similar to this. I had to uninstall EVERYTHING (lot's of stuff that you don't know is there), then reinstall. It worked perfectly. Check this out and you'll see a link for how to do it:

I-Photo won't open even though I have upgraded to OS X Yosemite and downloaded the I-Photo upgrader.
But have you run the the iPhoto Library upgrader? It is installed in Applications > Utilities. Launch it and direct it to your iPhoto library.
Which version of iPhoto did you upgrade from?
The upgrader is only necessary, if you have been  running iPhoto7.1.2 or earlier.

  • Latest updates now mail won't open

Down loaded the latest updates today now mail won't open??

Verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
After having fixed all filesystem issues, if any, reinstall any updates that may not have been installed properly. It may also be necessary to reinstall the Combo Update for the type of computer and the version of Mac OS X you’re using, unless this is the version of Mac OS X that came with your computer:
Mac OS X 10.3.9 Combo Update
Security Update 2007-003 for Mac OS X 10.3.9
Take a look at the following articles for guidelines on how to properly install system updates:
    Troubleshooting installation and software updates
    Installing software updates
Basically, you should verify/repair the startup disk before installing the update, no applications should be running while installing it, and you may experience unexpected results if you have third-party system software modifications (not normal applications) installed.

  • Security Update....restart.....now Mail won't open!

I just installed the latest security update, restarted and now Mail won't open. What's going on?

    John,
There is something strange about this update notice by means other than Software Update -- the one I saw was on MacMinute. Neither of my Macs running 10.4.5 had this one presented by Software Update. It is very close to the same version number as the one presented yesterday by Software Update. I have been trying to find whether there was a specific "fit" for it, but have not found the key.
Downloading and installing an update of this type, that is not presented by Software Update may be problematic. I will keep researching.

  • Mail won't open after computer falls asleep - forced to force quit!

    Hi there,
My mail won't open 85% of the time unless I force quit and restart my computer. Then, after my computer goes to sleep, I click on the stamp on my dock, and nothing happens. My computer says its still open. I've tried quitting mail and reopening from my Applications folder, but still, nothing happens, and I have to force quit my computer and restart so I can get/send my mail.
Any one have an idea for me? I have my gmail and another personal email set up as IMAP. Could there be a glitch in the way I set that up? Mail seems to come and go fine, when it's active.
Thanks in advance for your time and any help

Has anyone found a solution to this? I'm having the exact same problem and it really just started a couple days ago.

  • Mail won't open and it won't let my computer shut down

mail won't open, the little light by the icon in the dock won't go away, it won't quit, and it won't let my mac shut down even if i let the battery die, it just goes to sleep until you plug it in. Someone please help me!!

Launch Activity Monitor (in /Applications/Utilities folder), find the Mail process, and force quit it from there. If this is NOT an admin-privileged account, then log out, log back in to an admin-privileged account, run Disk Utility Verify Disk. IF problems are reported, reboot from installer DVD and run Disk Utility Repair Disk from the installer DVD. Launch it from Utilities menubar item once the menubar is visible. If you are now running booted off the installer DVD, when repair disk is complete reboot normally and log back in to admin account and download 10.6.2 combo update from http://support.apple.com/kb/DL959 and reapply it. Then run software update from the  menubar item. Let us know if that works or not.

  • My mail won't open and keeps on "not responding"

My mail won't open and keeps on "not responding"

    Do a backup.
Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Go to Library/Containers/com.apple.mail.  Move the folder com.apple.mail to your desktop. You must move the entire folder, not just the contents.
Restart, re-launch Mail and test. If the problem is solved, recreate any required Mail settings and import any emails you want to save from the folder on the desktop. You can then put the folder in the Trash. If the problem remains, return the folder to where you got it replacing the one that is there.

  • Mail won't open reply window & can't type since upgrading to 10.4.6

like the subject says, ever since I updated my OS to 10.4.6, Mail won't open a reply window when trying to reply to a received e-mail. Also, when trying to type a new email message, can only type until the space bar is hit, then get the error sound and no more characters can be typed. Tried repairing/verifying disk permissions several times and checked disk as well, but still won't work properly. Mozilla mail works without any problem, so it must be a Mac Mail thing...
thanks for any ideas...maybe this stuff needs to be tested better before OS updates are put out...will this and all of us be abandoned to Intel MacOS in the near future?

Most people having this issue have successfully solved it cleaning up the LaunchServices cache. The following article describes how to manually reset LaunchServices. The notes at the bottom of the article also provide information about the side effects of deleting each of the files involved.
    Resetting Launch Services
The following article also describes the side effects of cache cleaning:
Side effects of System cache cleaning
The following article provides links to some utilities that can be used for troubleshooting and cache cleaning:
Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption
It seems that the most appropriate utility for solving this particular problem is Tiger Cache Cleaner.
In addition to the utilities mentioned above, you may also consider OnyX, if for no other reason, because it's free. If you want to try OnyX, after installing it, do this (be sure to read the articles about the side effects of cache cleaning first):
    1. Quit all applications.
    2. Launch OnyX and enter your administrator password.
    3. Click Maintenance. In the Reset section, check LaunchServices database.
    4. You may uncheck any other pre-checked options if you've already done them using other utilities.
    5. Click the Execute button.
If that doesn't solve the problem, you may try again checking the Links between documents and applications option in step 3 instead.
Please let me know whether you were able to solve the problem, what worked for you and what didn't.
