Major problems after updating

Greetings all, have been spending a lot of time reading and trying this and that to fix this issue with out having to post a thread about it, but here we are.
I performed updates on 4/27, before doing so, I created an image of my Arch partition like I always do.  Arch was working great for me with no problems.  I performed the updates like I normally do
# pacman -Syu
There were a few updates but not as many as a couple of weeks prior and all seemed to download and install with out a hitch or any errors.  Once the updates were complete, I rebooted.  This is when everything went arwy.
Reboot hung for about 5 minutes on "Starting Hardware Abstraction Layer" Eventually it made it past this and went to my login. I logged in and executed "startx" another 5 minutes with a black screen and a solid cursor in the top left corner of the screen then eventually my X started and I was in my OpenBox WM. I figured maybe with the new kernel it had to set a few things in the background. Then I noticed I did not have much control of my mouse (synaptic touch pad on laptop) the slightest movement had the mouse arrow all over the place. Well I eventually got it to go to reboot on my OB menu. Reboot started ok then froze for about 3 minutes on "Sending SIGTERM to Processes" eventually it passed this and rebooted back to grub menu. Chose Arch and another 5 minute wait for "Starting Hardware Abstraction Layer". Once it got passed this is was about a 3 minute wait on "Checking File System" Eventually I was back in my WM and this time the mouse worked normally. I decided to see what Shutdown would do. Just like reboot, it hung on "Sending SIGTERM to Processes" then hung on "Power Off" and never powered off. Did a hard reboot same things hung but this time the solid black screen remained after attempting to start X and never went into my WM.
So here is what I did. I re-imaged the partition with my known good Arch partition from 4/27. All was well, Arch worked like a champ again but still needed to run updates. Re-booted and got to the command prompt and started updates. (prior update attempt was done while in the WM via terminal.  I read where the updates should be performed from the command line without starting X)Everything seemed to install fine, no errors. Re-booted and same thing as before. Noted a few errors and X never fully came online either.
Upon bootup at Starting D-BUS system message bus, got the error:
Failed to start message bus, the pid file /var/run/dbus.pid exist. You can remove this file and try again.
Then boot up re-started until it got to rpcbind.
ERROR RPCBIND is not running
Well after a few minutes I was finally at the command prompt. As root I removed the /var/run/dbus.pid file and rebooted again.
No change, everything that happened above happened again.
So in essence, I can't get a clean update to work in my current Arch. I could easily wipe the partition and do a fresh install of Arch, but I would not know what caused the problem, and I would not be learning anything.
A couple of key things to add.  This is a laptop.  Compaq V2000.  I also have Arch using OB on my desktop and it's pretty much set up the same and I have not had ANY issues during updates.  Arch is working GREAT on the desktop.  This has really got me stumped because it does not make any sense.  If I had the same issues on the desktop that would have made more sense.  I'm also running 2 other OS's on this same laptop and not having any issues with either of them.  Other OS's if it is important is XP Pro and Crunch Bang Statler.
I appreciate any and all responses and guidance you provide,  I apologize for this being long, but wanted to supply as much helpful information as possible.
All the best,
Ian

you're right, this issue really doesn't make sense.  but, what also doesn't make sense is why you're still using HAL.  arch uses udev now, the successor and replacement to hal.  i'm sure if you're using both at the same time, you are really screwing things up.  i would download a brand new image of arch and reinstall it.  theres a slight possibility that udev doesn't have certain drivers for an important piece of hardware you have.  this is highly unlikely but you never know.
depending on what this is used for, you might want to use something more dated like debian.  i myself have converted from debian to arch and i like arch a lot more but debian is a bit more hardware friendly than arch, and on a fresh install it is less likely to encounter issues.

  • Is anyone else having major problems after updating to 10.4.8???

It seems like most of the directly-related-to-OS X programs on my Power Mac are going screwy since updating. DVD Player freaks out after pausing, iChat won't let me video chat, my CPU fans occasionally go into turbo mode... heck, the performance of my Power Mac is generally poorer than before this update. Anyone else having issues right now?
A Mac expert buddy of mine did observe that if Apple releases a not-so-great update to the OS, usually the next one kicks butt. But my patience is wearing thin...

    Hello Paul.
    No problems/issues here.
Did you check the hard drive for any directory problems with Disk First Aid repair via Disk Utility when booted from your Tiger install package before installing the 10.4.8 Update?
Did you disconnect all external peripheral devices and quit all running applications before the install?
If not and as a first step, check this link for system troubleshooting procedures and when doing so, follow all steps/instructions in the order provided.

For future reference before installing a major OS Update such as 10.4.8, check this link.

If there is no change after performing all system troubleshooting procedures per the link provided, did you use Software Update to install the 10.4.8 Update?
If so, download the 10.4.8 PPC Combo Update and try re-installing it.

But my patience is wearing thin...
After each and every major OS update is released by Apple, there are a significant number of posts here claiming the update killed this or that or reporting a particular problem always blamed on the update. If there is a 10.4.9 update released by Apple, it will be no different here afterwards.
Although there have been times a portion of a particular major OS update is determined to be the cause of a reported problem, this is usually quickly addressed by Apple but for the most part, the process of installing a major OS update brings an unnoticed/underlying problem to the surface which is not caused by the update.

  • Major problem after updating to 10.4.9

    Hi
I've just updated tiger to the latest version, everything seemed fine at first but when I begin to use an application, surf the web or do anything after a minute or two while I'm in the application it will automatically change to the findeabove all this is very annoying! this has only started since installing that last updates which are:
    - Java for max OS X 10.4 Release 5
    - Quicktime 7.1.5
    - itunes 7.1.1
    - Security Update 2006-008 (PowerPC) 1.0
    - Mac OSX Update (PowerPC) 10.4.9
Has anybody else had the same issues since updating?
Does anybody know of any solutions I can try without reinstalling the OS?
    Thanks
    Wayne

Some of the usual things to try are:
    * In Disk Utility, do "fix permissions", and "verify disk"
    * Download and install the 10.4.9 "combo" installer, and possibly for some of the other recent updates you list. I'd try 10.4.9 first, then QuickTime, probably.
    * In addition to this site, sites such as http://www.macfixit.com and http://www.macintouch.com are good sources for problems, workarounds, and fixes.

  • Re: E61 Two Major problems after update

I had the same problem, the phone had to be "Flashed".
    Go to www.iunlock.com
    Vik

I hope that is not the case....
I need a solution to this problem.
I have spoken to the seller and he informed me that they did not reflash the phone, or change the keyboard. He claimed that they purchased it for a major and reputable wholesaler.
On the flip side, I am really disappointed that no one from Nokia can help with this issue - at least shed light on it. I know this is only a sponsored discussion board, but this language issue is coming up frequently and is on many of the other discussion boards.
In addition, I'm not at all sure whether my phone is grey market, UK, French or Middle east etc.etc, but I do know it offers all three languages, so I'd like to have the ability to select the correct keyboard configuration.
So just if I assume that this is a Grey market phone - This whole "it might be grey market, so they won't help you" is frankly BS. Someone bought these phones from Nokia and Nokia sold them at a price they were satisfied with. ie unless they were stolen, Nokia received fair compensation for the sale of these items. So, if I end up to be the end user, why shouldn't I get the same support as anyone else who bought the phone through a financial transaction that resulted in Nokia receiving the financial compensation they asked for.
I thought Nokia was in the business of selling phones (communication systems and devices). I bought one from them. Why can't I get my issue resolved?
Might seem like a rant, but not having the correct keyboard configuration is one thing, have characters replaced with Arabic is completely useless.
Can someone help me resolve the issue?
I don't know if it is grey, orange or purple market. I do know I bought a phone indirectly from Nokia and since I used their SW updater, it doesn't work properly any more....
    Thanks,
    Nick

  • LEAP WIFI problem after updated to 4.2.2

I've just upgraded my tablet to 4.2.2.
Now I can't connect to my company's network which uses password LEAP. Major problem for me.
Seems this is a common problem across a number of Android platforms.
Does anyone know how to resolve on the Tab Z (not rooted). ?

We are looking into this (see http://talk.sonymobile.com/t5/Xperia-Z-ZL-ZR/XPERIA-Z-LEAP-WIFI-problem-after-updated-to-4-2-2/m-p/3...) but at the moment i have no solution. This seems to be a general problem with Android 4.2.2 from what i've been able to find.

  • White screen problem after updating to 1.1 firmware

My 2G iPod Nano worked fine with 1.0.1 and 1.0.2 firmware but after updating to 1.1 I get white screen everytime I turn it on after longer period of time. Turning the iPod off and then right back on makes it work again. I have done restore 3 times without effect. I even removed the firmware files so that iTunes downloads them again when doing the restore but that didn't work either.
Should I return it or wait for new firmware? Has anyone else had this problem after updating to 1.1?

    Disconnect iPod and close iTunes.
Firmware files are in "Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPod Software Updates" folder.
You should still have the 1.0.2 files named "iPod_19.1.0.2.ipsw" and "iPod_19.1.0.2.ipsw.signature" in there if have you upgraded from 1.0.1 version.
Remove 1.1 files from the folder so that only those to files are in there.
Disconnect from network (I switched off my wlan) so that iTunes can't download the new version. Connect your iPod and do Restore, iTunes will now use the old firmware files because it can't connect to the internet.

  • Photoshop CS2 problems after updating to 10.4.5.?

Anybody notice Photoshop CS problems after updating to 10.4.5.?

Hello I had the same problem
I found the following information that helped me.....
Program errors occur when software conflicts arise due to an updated operating system. You can resolve these errors when you also update the driver software that causes the conflict or when you update the operating system. Program errors can also occur because of a damaged Photoshop preference file, or if there is a problem with a phone or internet connection. The Apple Disk Utility fixes file system errors that can also cause program errors.
Error "Could not complete your request..." or "Could not create a new document..." (Photoshop CS2 on Mac OS X v10.4)
    Issue
Adobe Photoshop CS2 returns one of the following error messages:
"Could not complete your request because of a program error" when you try to open a file.
"Could not create a new document because of a program error" when you try to create a new file.
    Solution 1:
Install the most recent update to Mac OS.
    Solution 2:
    Re-create your preferences files.
    1. Hold CommandOptionShift when you start Photoshop.
    2. Click Yes to the message, "Delete the Adobe Photoshop Settings file?"
    Solution 3:
    Disconnect your Internet connection.
To disconnect your Internet connection, do one of the following:
If you are connected to the Internet via a telephone modem, then disconnect from the modem.
If you are connected to the Internet via cable modem or DSL, then disconnect the ethernet cable from your computer.
    Solution 4:
    Use a disk repair utility.
Restart your Mac in Single User mode and run fsck -fy . For more information about the fsck command, please visit the Apple website at http:/docs.info.apple.comarticle.html?artnum=106214 .
    Solution 5:
Ensure that all your drivers are compatible with Mac OS X v10.4.
Determine if your printer and video card (and any other peripherals you might have) are compatible with Mac OS X v10.4, and visit the manufacturers' websites to update the drivers.
    Solution 6:
Re-create your printers in Mac OS X.
To re-create your printers, first delete them and then add them again.
    To delete your printers:
    1. Open System Preferences from the Apple menu.
    2. Select Print & Fax, and click Printing.
    3. Select each printer in the list and click the delete key (the minus key).
For instructions on how to add your printers again, see "Setting up to print to a printer" in Mac Help or search Help using the phrase "add a printer."
The one that fixed it for me was solution 6 -- re-creating my printers
I don't know why but it could be worth a try
    Good luck

  • Iphone 5 back camera problem after update to IOS 8. Focus doesn't work on back camera!

My device is Iphone 5 64gb IOS 8.
I have problem after update to IOS 8. When i run camera.. I hear some scratch inside my phone. And focus of back camera doesn't work.
    1. How can i fix it?
    2. Or how to rollback to IOS 7+ ?
    3. Should i come to app store with this problem?

I'm having this same problem too.  Worked fine prior to iOS update.  I contacted Verizon this morning who advised that this is a known issue.  They suggested I backup my device, and perform a factory data reset.  When prompted to update to iOS 8 again, re-installation has been known to resolve the issue.  With all the problems with iOS 8, camera, and overall device slowing, I might just wait for a follow on SW turn.

what cause searching network problem after updating iphone 6 from iOS 8.1.2 TO iOS 8.1.3?

SSince Apple does not support downgrading the iOS I suggest you start a new question that gives a good title to a specific problem. Then in the body of the thread describe the problem in detail, tell us what steps you have tried so far to correct the problem, what happened, and what error messages you received.

  • Anyone has any problem after updating to iSO 4.3.1 ?

anyone has any problem after updating to iSO 4.3.1 ?
I would like to know before updating mine.

My 3G kept freezing after iSO 4.2.. and after reading the forums I updated both my Itunes and software to iOS 4.3.1, now I've lost my notes, contacts, calender entries and so far in the last ten minutes it's turned off and restarted itself and sync'd continually about 5 times.
So basically I'm still where I was before only more cranky. In addition, I live in Australia and there are no Genius places here, there is no support from Apple unless you pay for it even by an email, you basically end up fending for yourself under a supposed warranty that isn't worth the paper its printed on.
It you haven't already guessed, I'm more than a little ****** off.
If I'd known how much trouble this was going to be, I don't think I would have spent the $400 odd dollars to buy it.
If its not right by the weekend I'm taking it back to the shop I bought it.

Have a similar problem. This MacBook opened all MS Office programs in Dec2012 but no longer does in Feb2013. Went to Microsoft/mac/downloads but none of the three updates would run citing a problem "version of software needed to run this update was not found on this volume".

That's ok. And of course powernow-k7 in MODULES array of rc.conf
Sure, that's pretty much what cpufrequtils do, however, they a) don't spawn a shell process and b) allow you to configure sudo to handle user-based changes.  It's just a nice wrapper for that.
raskolnikov wrote:BTW the last update of this (cpufrequtils) package has overwriten my /etc/conf.d/cpufreq file, is this a normal comportement ? This file was not in NoUpgrade as if I remeber correctly, NoUpgrade was deprecated with last pacman package...
Errm, blame me - that file should be backed up.  Thankfully, it's not a giant config file.
