Major Problems w/ ibookG4 software restore

i have an ibook G4 that i believe i bought in May of 2004, and i believe it is running Jaguar. I am not sure if it is the (10.3.1)
I came home from school and the creen was a light blue. I reset the computer and it would not boot up. The apple icon was showing in the middle of the screen and the disk looking object below it was spinning, and nothing more would happen. i unplugged and took out the battery and let is sit for a couple of hours. then i tried to boot it up and i DID work, after about 3 mins though the screen turned black. i got some intell from this site and decided that i should try to reinstall my software. I put in "OS X Install Disk 1." i went thought a couple continues and the agreement, then came to a screen that said, "select destination." the only available icon to select from the window was the Mac HD icon. i selected it and clicked continue, after a moment it said something like 'You are trying to install an older version of Mac OS X', and it quit trying to install. i decided i would give up for then. I went to quit Installer and the box poped up that said cancel, (change)startup disk, quit. I believe it said change startup disks, which at the time i thought that ment change the disks in the disk drive, i wasn't thinking clearly. when the window poped up to selsct a startup disk, the Mac HD and a "?" over it, or at lease i does now, i clicked the Insall disk, which was the only option and selected OK, or quit, or something.
Now i believe that i was suppose to change something i the Options when i came to that window that said "select destination." I read that i have to select either archivwe and restor or erase and restore ( or something like that). The only problem is that now the Mac HD icon doesn't appear in the icon window when you are suppose to select your destination for the insallation. i was messing around in the disk utility from the Istallation window and noticed that my Mac HD is NOT mounted, i clicked the mount button, however it appeared to have no affect.
Any information that you could give me would be awesome.
Thanks Very Much
also when i fist power on my ibook, now, there is a picture of a small globe, then after a few moments it shows a folder shat switches to the Mac face thing, and a "?" flashed over it. then it goes to the Aplle and then the the software "Install Mac OS X" widnow.

Hi admaibkg4,
Welcome to the Discussions.
It seems there's a problem with your HD. It's possibly dead.
The globe icon at startup is your iBook searching for a network drive to start from, the flashing ? means no valid system was found and finally it starts from the install disc. Launch Disk Utility again from the Installer menu and try to select the drive again. If your drive won't appear or mount it's probably dead and you'll have to have a new one installed.
It's possible at times to extract files from a "dead" drive if you have an external enclosure (http://www.macsales.com sells a good one). Recently I was able to get a failing drive (my mother-in-law's) revived long enough to retreive some valuable files by placing it in the freezer for an hour and then placing it in the enclosure. If cold doesn't work a 175˚F oven may. There's nothing to lose.
A benefit to having an external drive is ease of performing backups. Always have a backup of important data. All drives will fail at some point in time.

  • Major problems with MSI software.

when i first got my motherboard i put in the cd and installed the MSI pc alert 3 and fuzzy logic 3.  pc alert 3 ran fine and since ive upgraded to 4.  but fuzzy logic gave me a load rushtop NT driver failed.  so i uninstalled it, then upgraded to fuzzy logic 4.  got the load rushtop error again, so i got the newest verion today.  got the rushtop NT driver message.  so i uninstalled it, then went into regedit and searched for fuzzy and deleted every fuzzy key i found.  i rebooted and loaded up fuzzy logic 4 and ran it.  i got a new error message, Load NT hardware Monitor failed.  so i got creative and copied the GLM7x.sys file from my pc alert 4 to my fuzzy logic 4.  i ran fuzzy logic 4 and it started up fine, i looked at the values and they were all blank or 0's and it tried telling me i had a p3 processor.  i uninstalled it again.  then my pc alert 4 stopped working, so i uninstalled it, then reinstalled and now the pc alert screen pops up and it runs but all the values are empty.  anyone know of ways to fix this problem, and/or get fuzzy logic 4 to work?  if not, do you know of any good software overclockers that work with 645 boards and windows XP Pro SP1?

yeah it gives you an error that says pc alert or fuzzy logic is already running. i think it has to do with that thier system monitoring driver 'GLM7X.sys' is the same in both, but they are different sizes.  this maybe but the problem.  nonetheless i got pc alert 4 running again, just mysteriously started working.  went in and over clocked the fsb to 120.  now i have a 2.4. buti am concerned as this makes the ram and bus to everything else much faster.  the only thing thats really rated to o'c is the northwood. so what im wondering and why i am focusing on fuzzy logic as it allows you to do this, but to set the multiplier higher.  that way only the CPU o'cs and theres not such a danger of $400+ worth of ram, and $150 board along with a $175 processor going up in smoke, instead it would just be the proc.  any suggestions on ocing the multipler?  i know microshaft / intel stopped allowing you to o'c the multiplier, i know some software has this ability...

  • Applications problem: "You cannot update this software since you have not owned the major version of this software."

    Hi all,
RE: Applications problem: "You cannot update this software since you have not owned the major version of this software."
Until recently, I have not encountered this problem.  And I am facing this problem for both my iPad and iPhone.
I only have 1 iTunes account and the most recent change was that I switched the location from Singapore to UK (I'm currently in the UK).  I also updated my applications a couple of times before since the change in location, so I doubt it's due to the location change.  I've tried signing out of the account in the iTunes accounts on the devices, then signing back in.  I've also tried restarting the devices (and for the iPad, I even updated the iOS).
Any idea what else I can do to try to rectify this?
    Thanks and regards,
    Tammy

    Hi there!
    Thanks for replying!
    1.  Yup, my iOS is the latest (6.0.1), and I have 7 apps on my iPhone that apparently have updates.  But it's been 6.0.1 for quite some time and I've also been able to update the apps till just this week.
    2.  I don't have a credit card associated with my account anymore.  Ever since I changed the location, I removed the credit card details.  But I didn't have problems with any of my apps (updating or downloading new ones) until this week.  Also, all the apps I've downloaded since I came to the UK are free apps.
    I still don't know what's wrong.

While trying to restore os x and erase content on my MacBook pro, some problem about voice software came up and the computer asked me to restart and try again by clicking restart button. When I did this, the machine went to a gray start up screen with an apple and will not progress. I've waited more than 30 minutes and tried restarting again by holding the power button. Also, restore cd 1 will not eject so the computer will no longer move past the gray screen with spinning circle. Restore CDs had never beeused and were still in packaging in the original box. Ran hardware test just to check, and it came back as normal. Now what? I live nowhere near a genius bar :(

Since the install disc won't eject, try starting up while holding down the C key. If the Mac won't boot while holding down the C key, try ejecting disc by either holding down the mouse while starting up or holding down the Eject key while starting up.

  • I am having major problems restoring from Time Machine. The computer tells me I have completely restored but no data is available in the various applications.

I had backed up all my data to Time Machine, then securely deleted all data on my MacBook Pro and reinstalled Snow Leopard, prior to having Apple replace a faulty Airport card. I went through the normal restoration process from Time Machine, which took quite some time (about 2.5 hours for 240 Gb of data, including applications) without giving any indication of a problem. However, although the computer indicates that 240 Gb has been reinstalled on the hard drive, data such as photos, music, documents, IOS apps, movies, etc , is not showing up in the relevent application i.e. photos in iPhoto or mobile apps in iTunes. Even though application icons were visible in the dock, they would not open. I spent two days (one hour one day and five hours the next) at the Apple Genius Bar trying to find out what the problem was, without any success. No matter what was tried, no clear solution was evident so I was given a manual workaround to bring back banks of files one at a time, which has given me some workability. All data is obviously stored on the external hard drive, but restoration has not been successful. I have successfully used Time Machine to restore all data from a previous MacBook to my current MacBook Pro without any hitches whatsoever. The only difference this time is that I have two separate accounts on the Pro, which may be causing the problem. I can restore items manually from either account but they all go into one account. Also, when manually restoring photos or music from Time Machine, I am unable to select the relevent location for this data, i.e. iPhoto or iTunes. The only way I got these into the relevent application was by putting them into a burn folder or onto a thumb drive and then dragging them into the dock application. I am not very computer savvy and feel totally out of my depth to manually restore everything back to where it was before the clean install, particularly the two user accounts, which I would loke to have back again. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Wi-Fi problem - Hardware or Software/Firmware Related?

I have an original iphone, purchased when they first came out so it's no longer under warranty. After I "upgraded" to the 2.1 firmware my wi-fi started losing connection through out the day. It has gradually gotten worse, and now I'm lucky if I can pick up any wi-fi signal at all, and if I do it rarely last more than 5 minutes.
I've tried resetting my router, power cycling my router, rebooting my iphone, resetting network setting on the iphone, and resetting the iphone totally. Nothing seems to work for more than 5 minutes.
This is a major problem for me, because I live in an area out of cell phone range, so I can't use EDGE for anything. I totally rely on wi-fi at my house and almost always have my phone set to "airplane mode" but with wi-fi enabled (although I've tried turing "airplane mode" off to solve the problem).
Does anyone have any insight into whether this is hardward related or software/firmware related? If it's software related, does anyone have any other suggestions? (I've included my network setting below.) If it's hardware related, has anyone had any luck getting the problem fixed even if their phone is out of warranty (at $400 one would expect not to have these types of problems after little more than a year!).
My network settings are as follows...
    IP Address: 192.168.2.2
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
    Router: 192.168.2.1
DNS: Have tried original assigned, my router's IP address, 4.2.2.1, 4.2.2.2
I'm using a Linksys Wireless-G 2.4GHz router (WGT54G) with NO WIRELESS SECURITY enabled.
    THANKS IN ADVANCE

Thank you both for your help, and sorry for the delay getting back to you, I was traveling without my computer.
I tried updating the firmware on my router...
I tried restoring the phone from backup...
I tried restoring and setting up as a new phone...
I tried a full DFU restore...
I tried downgrading to firmware 2.0...
I tried upgrading to firmware 2.2
I tried the above using itunes 7.7...
I tried the above using itunes 8.0.2...
Unfortunately, nothing has worked. Does anyone have any other suggestions? Anyone else with this problem have any luck getting their original iphone replace if it wasn't under warranty?
Thanks again for any help you can provide!

  • Major Problems connecting ATV to iTunes

I am having major problems in connecting to my iTunes on my PC. The ATV is not showing up in the devices list at all. It started after I reinstalled windows and reinstalled all the software after having major problems with the internet connection. The ATV is connected to the router with an ethernet cable and I can see it on the router home page. I have also done a full factory restore several times. I can access youtube on the ATV so the connection to the router is good. I can connect to the ATV from my laptop so I can assume the ATV is ok. I have tried everything in the the forum that has been advised and I have tried everything in the apple support also and as some one mentioned in other posts I have a very hot paper weight that I can watch crap youtube videos on!!!!
Any help will be truely appreciated.

Not necessarily -- it can still show up in the list but not be properly assigned a network ID (and not available to join the network) if there aren't enough clients available -- are you sure you have it set to at least 50? And you need to make sure you've cloned the Mac address as well if you have a cable modem. It won't hurt to check this. And make sure you try pinging the net ID of the ATV just to make sure it is responding (if not then the ATV unit itself is probably defective).
Let's assume for a moment that both of these settings are fine and it does ping. At that point it almost surely is a permissions thing -- turn off security at the router if wireless (sorry -- this old man just got up and I can't remember if you are wired or not), turn off any firewall and if you have Norton turn it off as well (all of this just for the moment). Stop the iTunes service, reboot the ATV, and then bring up iTunes (which will start up the iTunes service).
I need to shower and then I'm off to the courts (and perhaps I will have awakened and realized something else).

  • IPhoto '11 Major Problems

    Hello,
There are major problems in the new iPhoto '11 and I am wondering if anyone is having the problems listed below.
Every time I open iPhoto 11 it wants to upgrade the photo library. I let it, check around iPhoto and look at pictures, and quit iPhoto and it saves the library all 25000 pictures. So I open iPhoto again and it is asking to upgrade the photo library AGAIN. And it repeats every time I open iPhoto.
I also noticed this on other apps such as iMovie and Garageband. iMovie will upgrade all movies made on iMovie, and Garageband scans for Jam mixes every time I open the apps. After quitting iPhoto, iMovie, or Garageband it seems like it never saves changes. I have not tried iWeb or iDVD yet to see if the problem affects those apps aswell.
This is the first time I am angry at Apple for selling software for $50 when it doesn't even work properly.
I have a feeling that it has something to do with Time Machine backups, because after upgrading my library it started backing up all 120GB of photos again.
I have also heard cases of other people loosing photos, thank god I have a back up, all 120GB of it.
Please Apple release a fix ASAP!!!!

Every time I open iPhoto 11 it wants to upgrade the photo library. I let it, check around
iPhoto and look at pictures, and quit iPhoto and it saves the library all 25000 pictures.
So I open iPhoto again and it is asking to upgrade the photo library AGAIN.
And it repeats every time I open iPhoto.
I seems to me as if you have a corrupted iPhoto library. Not bad enough to stop it working in iPhoto 9 but bad enough to cause an upgrade problem.
FWIW I had a corrupted iTunes library that didn't stop iTunes working but every 2nd time I connected my iPod classic it would claim that the iPod library was corrupted. Connect the iPod to a different Mac then back to the first and iTunes was happy for 1 sync -(: go figure.
I have a feeling that it has something to do with Time Machine backups,
because after upgrading my library it started backing up all 120GB of photos again.
I am waiting for Time machine to let me know about the backup size, but would not be surprised if it backed up the complete iPhoto library again.
Just think how difficult it would be to restore from 2 different library versions.
You usually just modify a single library version so then just the change make sense but after a major upgrade of the library version a new backup makes sense to me.

  • Major problems with my ipod...

It's quite irritating, and I'd like to start right from the beginning with it's history. if you're uninterested in the history of problems I've had with it just scroll down.
Anyways, I've had my ipod touch since christmas 2008, and in the beginning (maybe the first 1 or 2 syncs) everything was fine. On the third sync i started having problems, and had constantly had to try to get past them where one day i was finally able to completely sync it. After that 3rd sync I never bothered syncing it again on itunes.
Now i got a new laptop, a Dell Inspiron 1525 which uses Vista Home Premium. Since I got my new laptop I wanted to get it connected to itunes from it, rather than the desktop because I was giving the desktop to my dad for him to use as a server (or something, I'm not quite sure). The first time I plugged in my ipod touch, it caused itunes to freeze, making me unplug it and restart my computer.
    (My problem:)
Today, I tried syncing it because I was told by my friend a new update to the software was available via itunes which was meant to fix the recent problems with it. I decided to install it, everything was going great. When the software installed into my ipod touch, I tried to sync it, but alas it still did not work. In the end I tried restoring my ipod, and here's where the major problem happened. It started to restore and near the end it told me my device timed out. I unplug and replug my ipod to get the same message.
After 1-2 times, I closed and re-opened itunes in which I tried plugging my ipod touch in again. It gave me an error message (unfortunately I don't remember it), so I decided to restore it one last time. This caused my ipod to now "not be recognized by itunes" as it malfunctioned. I know people have been posting about this problem, but it's not the only problem my ipod has now. Now my iPod touch won't even turn on. i've done EVERYTHING, I held the power and hold button, I held the power and hold button for 10 seconds and held the hold button for another 20seconds (like someone had suggested) and it did not work, and nothings working.
I plan on returning it in exhange for a new one, but i really don't want this to happen again, which i'm afraid it might.
    So I have two questions:
    1) Why did my iPod do this, and why won't it turn on no matter what the typical drastic responses tell me to do?
    2) What can i do so that my ipod will properly sync on my Window's Vista?

Is your laptop going to sleep in the process of restoring the Touch? To be safe, you might want to temporarily disable "Hibernation" on your laptop while you sync, and make sure that you have external power applied.

  • IPod Mini ~Major Problem

Ive had my iPod Mini for 2 years roughly I think now and havent had any major problems at all.
Yesterday its started playing songs without my touching any buttons and skipping to the next song in exactly the same place as the one before started ~ 2.05 minutes.
When I turned it off it still continued to play random songs.
I tried playing a song it played for two seconds then skipped to the next and played that for a bit then skipped to the next until the playlist had finished where it then returned to the main menu and played a completely random song not even on the playlist i chose previously.
I have not misued my ipod, dropped it, spilt water on it or damaged it in any way.
I have restored it to Main Factory settings and it has done nothing.
If any of you have experienced the same problem or have any ideas of how to help please reply.
    I would be truely grateful

    For Window computer
    Go to folder “My Computer”
Hope you can see your iPod there and right click on the iPod
Choose “Format”. Ensure the settings are at “Default” and that “Quick Format” is not checked
    Now select “Format”
Eject your iPod and do a Reset
Open the iPod Updater and click “Restore”
In case you do not manage to do a “Format” on a window computer, try to use some 3rd party disk utility software, e.g.“Partition Magic”.
If does not work, please find a Mac computer
    For Mac computer
    1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
    2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
    3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
    4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
    5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
    6. Open the iPod Updater and click “Restore”
I could be wrong, I believe that it could have some bad sectors on the HD of your iPod, doing a full format can only solve 80-90%

  • Another major problem after 10.4.8 update

    Hi everyone,
I've never had any major problem with any Mac OS update yet until I had the crazy idea to install the 10.4.8 update last week. I wish I would have never done this. This is also the first time I wish I had Windows since I can't remember such a big screw up with any Windows update I've seen.
But back to the problem, after the installation on my old 12" Powerbook (1.33GHz with an additional 1GB of RAM) the system got really slow. The harddisk was accessed all the time, so after reading some forums people said that Spotlight would run a re-index of the database which made sense to me. So I just let it run over night and the next day the permanent HDD access was gone, but whenever I tried to access a folder it took ages (HDD access again...). So I decided to reboot which took about 20 minutes until the desktop fully showed up and was useable. Again, I had HDD access all the time. After two hours or so it stopped again, but as soon as I clicked on something, for example a folder, it started again. At that point the Powerbook was simply not useable anymore because I couldn't even start a program.
So I start browsing through several forums and many people suggested to re-install the 10.4.8 combo update again. That's what I tried, after a while I could only hear the HDD access running and running. The installer said 29 minutes left and progress bar didn't move any further. I had it running for over a hour like that. I couldn't abort it, I could start no other software, nothing. It still showed 29 minutes and the HDD was accessed all the time.
So I restarted the Powerbook since this obviously wasn't going anywhere. Apple logo came up, the little gear spinning thing as well and of course I could hear the HDD being accessed. After two hours of doing this I aborted and decided to boot into safe mode to install the combo update. Again, same situation. HDD running like crazy and Apple logo, but no login screen coming up.
So I decided to boot from the Install disk and have the disc utility check the HDD... but of course after selecting the language and clicking continue at the screen when the HDD first shows up it starts to access the HDD... I can't select the HDD, I can't even get to the DU, nothing. It's been running like that for hours now. It seems like whenever the HDD is involved in something the accessing starts and just keeps running without any result. The HDD is getting very hot already.
I've never run into such a problem before, so I'm kinda clueless what to do next. I don't mind to reinstall, but I have some files on that HDD that I need (some notes in text files, some emails and so on).
So at this point I can't boot into OS X to access the HDD and I can't use the installer disk to access DU or even reinstall if I wanted to. I don't think the HDD is broken, this only happened after the 10.4.8 update. It just seems that every HDD access takes hours and hours longer than it should.
What options do I have to get my data from the disk? I'll try to install OS X to a new external drive tomorrow (need one with firewire first). If that doesn't help I thought about pulling out the HDD from the Powerbook and hook it up to my MacMini or an iMac.
If anyone has any other suggestion or solved a similar problem before, please let me know.
    Best,
    Stephan
