Major problems with Server 10.5 on Mac Pro

My Mac Pro was running Leopard 10.5.6.
I installed 10.5 Server on a separate internal hard disk. It installed OK, but when I successfully logged in and downloaded the 10.5.6 v1.1 update, the computer froze on Log Out. I had to power it off using the power button.
When I started up again, after I type in my login credentials, only "Server Assistant" opens. No dock. Just the "Server Assistant" menu bar. And I can't do anything except move the mouse and see the menu. When I press Command-Q, it closes Server Assistant and logs me out.
This happened to me twice; on two separate installations.
Any help would be appreciated.

Well, the obvious question is what processes are running on the machine that could be consuming bandwidth.
There are three scenarios I can think of that might cause this.
One is the server trying to download a large amount of data - e.g. if you startup the Software Update Server it will download gigabytes of software updates from Apple. I'm guessing this isn't the case if it's been going on a long time.
Option 2 is a misconfigured service that's allowing your machine to act as an open relay (e.g. a web proxy or mail server) and other users are bouncing traffic through your machine. This is absolutely something you should fix.
Option 3 is a hacked/compromised machine that's doing something it shouldn't.
Of these option I think #2 is the most likely. If you're running an open mail proxy you will get hit by spammers using your server to spew their wares.
You should look at the server logs to see what's going on. Specifically /var/log/mail.log for the mail server and /var/log/httpd/access_log or /var/log/apache2/access_log for the web server. If either of these are large and growing you may have a problem.
Once you identify the source of the problem you can implement a fix, but until you know which service it's impossible to be specific.

Hello, having a problem with Logic 9 on a Mac Pro.Working on a lenghty song and apparently session got corrupted.Doesnt let me export tracks, program crashes.Already tried start brand new session with the tracks imported into it but still wont export.Suggestions?

Thanks, Ian. Yeah, that's how I do it now...or with the controls in the left side pane. Still, I would have liked that quick on-the-spot edit capability...especially while sketching.

Sorry Mark, you are out of luck as it does not do that - it works the same as L8. The way I would achieve that with more accuracy and control would be to route all the tracks you want to fade to a Bus then use volume automation on the bus. To do this you will need to add a standard audio track, then re-assign it using (Control Click on the track header) to the Bus track. You can then automate volume/plugins etc on the Bus track.

  • Problems with Digitus DA-70577 on MAC PRO 4.1

    Hello
My USB3 Digitus DA-70577 connected to my MAC PRO 4.1 through the Cal digit Card stops working randomly and requires to be switched off and on to work again.
The apps with files linked to the drive freeze and occasionally I must reboot the Mac
I think it's not a Cal digit problem as in the second port I have a USB3 RAID system working well at all times. I also tried to change the RAID and the HDD in the two available ports but nothing changed
I use this set up while editing so is really annoying and I also worry to eventually break the Drive inside the enclosure
Any suggestions if this happened to anyone
    Regards and Thanks

@Pete_B100, thank you for a different direction. I was able to start an install with the drive in an external USB bay. However, I could not get it to boot ML inside the internal bays. This got me thinking...
SOLUTION: This was an error on my part. I bought my MacPro 4,1 without the WiFi card in it. Around the time I bought it, I had a Mac Mini that I was using for parts. I took the WiFi card (Model No. AR5BXB6) out of the Mac Mini and put it in the Mac Pro. Worked like a champ for SL and Lion. While I was in there yanking out drives, I decided to yank that out. The hint was that the ML USB boot could not see my WiFi card. After I took it out, it was operating like it should. I was able to do a Clean Install of Mountain Lion on my Crucial M4 SSD with no problems.
Thank you all for your help and suggestions!

  • Power problems with Radeon 3870 on 2008 Mac Pro

I've got a 2008 Mac Pro (10.5.7) and I've replaced the 2600 card that came in it with two Radeon HD 3870s and I am having an issue.
The cards are in slots 1&2 (the higher speed slots.) After a short period of time, the card in slot 1 powers off its monitors, but the monitors on the second card remain active. Only a reboot reactivates the monitors on the first card.
In the process of debugging this I've removed all cards and put 1 3870 in slot 1. The problem remained.
I swapped in the other card in slot 1. The problem remained.

Now enough free space on the disk can slow the entire system down.
Click your Apple menu icon top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click About This Mac > More Info then select Storage from the menu.
Make sure there's at least 15% available space.

  • Urgent question very Strange problem with an external HD on mac PRO

    Hi,
I have a problem with a external HD on my mac pro.
After many month of regular use with out any problem today when I turned on the HD I could not see it in the finder anymore.
I use this HD for backup of an other external HD and to do the back up I use an application called SYN SYNC
    The strange things are:
    1) If I start Sync Sync everything works properly as if the sofware recognize with out problem that the HD is effectively there.
    2) If I open DISK UTILITY I can see the HD and if I try to repair it the utility after 2 minutes says that everything is ok.
    3) If I look for the mac pro (to which the external HD incriminated is connected) on a different mac in my studio over the net I can see the external HD and I can browse the folder, copy items from the esternal HD to the MAC and even copy thing on the external HD.
I tried to connect directly via Fire wire 800 the HD on a different MAC and I could not see it like on the mac pro.
Does enyone have an idea of what's going on?
    best regards
    Lorenzo

I can still see all the others external Hd with out any problem and I already try this but no results I can't see that HD on the desktop and neither in the sidebar.
As I said the strange thing is that the external HD shows the same behaviour when is connected to a different MAC.
Seams the problem is with the HD not with the MAC.
I even try to use a different case for the HD using also USB connection instead of FW, but nothing change!

I just bought a MAC A retina display with OSX 10.9.4, but it can not print. This printer works very well with my other laptop using windows OS.
I did not know what went wrong with my MAC, somebody please help me to solve this problem.

  • Major Problems with Captivate 5.5 and Connect Pro

I have a bunch of quizes that have 30 random question slides. Each slide pulls from various question pools. All of these quizes where created in Capitivate 5 and converted to Captivate 5.5.
My problem is that Captivate 5.5 is corrupting my quizes and preventing me from posting them to my Connect Pro server. If I fix the quiz to where it will post CAptivate 5.5 will eventually corrupt it again.
When I try to publish I get a "Failed to publish your project to the Connect Pro Server. Verify your Network Connection and then retry."
Also Connect Pro starts throwing up errors about my number of concurrent users has been exceeded. That is impossible since I have not release any training yet to anyone other than myself.
I did not have any of these problems until I upgraded to Capitvate 5.5.
I am about about two more errors away from abandoning Elearning as a career and going back to marketing and design. I have not seen one elearning product out there adobe or not that's not riddled with bugs. I though using Connect Pro and Captivate together would work because they are both made by Adobe.
ANy Ideas? I at the edge.

I just realize something. If I open a CP 5 file with quizzes save as a CP 5.5 with out making changes to the quiz it will publish with no problem. However if anything is changed on any question pool slide the project will no longer publish to Connect.
Every question has to be changed because Captivate 5.5 messes up all of the text alignment and some of it runs off the stage area and is not visible.
This is ridiculous. I should not have to rebuild all of my project files every time I upgrade.

  • Is there a hardware problem with the early 2008 model Mac Pro's that causes

    graphics card failures?
I've had the 2600 fail just out of warranty then I bought the Nvidia 8800. The 8800 lasted around 18 months them failed as well. I replaced it with the ATI HD5770 which has been working very well up until this morning when I booted the computer and got a screen full of multi-coloured lines. After a reboot it was fine but this also started happening before my other graphics cards eventually failed.
I've had many hi-end gaming PCs and never had a graphics card fail before, but my mac - which has never done any hard graphic work - has had two and appears to be going for a third failure.
    Something isn't right.

    GBA,
Thanks for your reply, appreciate! In fact, I did start up a thread but there is no reponses from friends at all

Then, I search around the discussion and got this thread. Try to drop by and hope to learn some skills or tips to resolve my issue before I grab the graphic card to try my luck!
Yup, I'll try to boot up from installer and hope it helps! Update you soon...

  • 10.9.3 = major problem with fast user switching

I've found a major problem with the 10.9.3 update with my 27" iMac, you probably won't see it if your on a laptop. I did all the updates in past few days i.e., 10.9.3 combo update, iTunes 11.2.1.
Afterward I noticed a bug when Fast User Switching i.e. FUS. I have 5 accounts but the bug can be replicated with only 2.
I login to userA  have some windows open but you can just open a Finder window. Now make the window at least half the with of the screen and move it to the right side of the screen. Then login in to userB and setup the windows the same way as userA. Now FUS to userA and then back to userB. You will notice that the Finder window has been moved to the upper left corner of the screen. This problem happened's to all user accounts you login to except the first account you logged into.
Since I didn't know what update caused the problem I had to use Time Machine to revert to my last version of 10.9.2. I then double checked the for the bug and sure enough everything was working fine. I now was going to install one update at a time and to see which one was causing the bug. So I installed 10.9.3 first and found the bug immediately.
I now know what's happening. When the switch occurs the screen is resized to about the equivalent of a 13" MBP. At this point the windows that fall some ware outside that size get moved to the upper left corner and resized. Then the screen resizes to normal but it's too late, all the window have moved and been resized to fit the 13" screen size.
You can reproduce this effect by going to System Preferences and selecting Display and then select the Scaled radio button. No select the smallest size, say, 1280 x 720. Now select the Best for display radio button again. You will now see all the windows you have open that were too big no moved and resized to the upper left corner. I know why the Mac moves the windows, it's so you don't have any windows stuck off screen.
Now when I say 13" it could be some other size but it's about that size give or take.

Yes, it's when you user Fast User Switching.
Here's snapshot before the screen resized. Ignore the window in the lower right, I moved it from the upper left before taking the screen shot.
I hate to say it but I'm glad I'm not the only one with this bug.

  • Problems with garageband 5.1 and mac OS X 10.8.5

I have recently started experiencing major problems with garageband.  I assume this is since my latest upgrade but I also now realise that I've been having problems for quite some time but its just got worse.
I can't seem to upload a new version of Garage band.  I understand that I need to upgrade to ilife but I can't find it in the app store.  Is this what I need to do? and if does anybody have a link to it?
I work as a VO artist and really need to sort this asap
I look forward to any hints/tips/ideas
    Thanks in advance

the latest version of GB is version 10, which requires Mac OS X 10.9.x (both are free), which leaves you with two options:
upgrade your system and get GBv10 (Apple no longer offers v6)
find boxed copy of iLife '11 which has GB v6 on ebay, or amazon (they have iLife '11 for $39)

try forcing internet recover, hold 3 keys - command, option, r - you should see a spinning globe

    Hi Guys,
I have a problem with Importing Pictures onto my Mac mini with Lion installed by using a Card Reader,
What is the problem here so I can get Pictures onto my Computer. ,

    Hi Noob Søren
There are a few things that are confusing in your question.
As far as I know, you dont have to install Time Machine on this OS as it is already installed for you. You only need to connect a hard drive to your computer via firewire or usb, click on the Time Machine icon, Open Time Machine Preference in the drop down menu and select a disk: your connected hard drive.
You can of course reformat this connected device, partition it into a few volumes to organise data if you so wish.
I find it strange that your mac's hard drive is divided into two volumes... perhaps this was created through bootcamp?
You can access the configuration of your hd through Applications/Utilities/Disk Utilities.
Clicking on one of the icons on the right hand panel will bring the details of the contents of your hardDrive and volumes. From there you can decide to erase a partition, reformat etc....
If your hd contains more than one volume, and one of them is empty, you could decide to remove it. Back up all your important data before doing so.
    Hope this helps

  • Major problems with Premiere CS4

    Hello there!
I'm having major problems with CS4. I recently bought a new computer - essentials are as follows:
    Intel Core i7 920 2.66GHz
    2 x Kingston 3x2GB, DDR3 1333MHz (=12 GB RAM)
    Ati Radeon HD 5770 v2
    Asus P6T SE, LGA1366, X58, DDR3, ATX
    2 x 500GB, Barracuda 7200.12 (RAID1), system disk
    2 x 1TB Barracuda 7200.12, media disks
    Windows 7 Pro 64 bit
Adobe CS4 Production Premium + latest updates
The problem I have has mostly to do with Premiere although I think the rest of Production Premium softwares should be running better on this computer as well.
For starters, I was highly disappointed when I couldn't view a single HD clip from the Premiere timeline (it was an .m2ts rip from a previously self-burned Bluray disc) at all. Rendering is very slow and even after that the video doesn't run normally, showing just a few individual frames per second. When I point the timeline at a certain spot, it takes many seconds until even that very frame is shown in the monitor window.
And this is not all - I decided to try with a basic DV AVI clip, previously captured with my PPro 1.5 on my earlier computer (3.2ghz Pentium from 2005). It's a native file so it doesn't even need rendering and still the same problem occurs. With normal playback only about 6-10 frames are shown per second. It's absolutely ridiculous - even my 2004 laptop runs DV AVIs more smoothly with PPro 1.5.
While I'm running the Premiere, the level of used RAM comes only up to around 24 percents. The processor, then again, comes close to a hundred when play is pressed on the timeline.
I haven't had such immense problems with other Production Premium softwares (though as I said, I think they should be running faster as well). Otherwise the computer is running smoothly.
A friend of mine pointed out that the graphics card I'm using isn't on the Adobe website's list of supported ones with Premiere, but afaik it shouldn't even be a graphics card problem with this high-end machinery.
So - I sure could use some help and ideas about how to get the Premiere working. My main intention for buying a new computer and Adobe CS4 Production Premium was to start HD editing after all! Thanks beforehand!

    Hi
Yeah, I hope he solves problem and knows how it got solved and tells us all...it's like being a detective !  " Mr Plum did it in the "svchost" room ! "
I got a little lost on this....
You are welcome and I'm glad that it paid off so nicely for you. One more  suggestion, if I may: I'm a big fan of a fixed pagefile size. When making a  fresh install of Windows, one of my first actions is to set a fixed pagefile on  a different disk (min=max) before installing anything else on that different  disk and removing the pagefile on the C drive. This will ensure that the  pagefile in on the fastest part of the drive and will never be  fragmented.
I think it used to be that I made swapfiles, or swapdisks which now seems to be called pagefile.  That in itself is a little confusing semantic wise, because of the use of mempage stuff.  It used to be that base memory was 640k, with the upper memory (to make up 1024 kb) was mostly for drivers and stuff.  If more memory was needed than 640k (an event the inventor never thought possible...  "who could want more than the enormous amount of 640K ?", he said..)..the extended and expanded memory got invented to swap memory pages from that 640k as needed with the rest of RAM.  That's basically correct right ?  Sooooo, I don't know if that still goes on, but I suspect it does, unless someone totally changes the architecture of the computer and cpu and fsb and everything...  but I don't know what is going on nowadays.  Anyway, there were other ways besides windows OS to create virtual memory on the hard drive, and Photoshop was one of the programs that could do that, I think.
Why MS would want to call the swapdisk virtual memory "pagefile" is beyond me.
Anyway, be that as it may, I understand that making the pagefile first on a drive so it's close to the center of the drive (heads don't have to travel far to access).  But I haven't added a lot of drives to a system before, and I suspect I will be pretty soon...and this is the part I don't get...
You add drives and put OS on them?  So they are bootable ?  I've added a drive or two but just formatted and used as more storage but didn't put OS on them.  So that part is confusing...
Then you take the pagefile off the C: drive ?  Are you then using the new drive as your boot drive and the C: drive is too full to use accept to run the programs already installed ?
    Thanks again !

  • Problems with Photoshop cs4 for the Mac

I am having all kinds of problems with Photoshop CS4 for the Mac.  When I boot the software it seems to work for a while then, I am unable to open upf a file in Photoshop.  I drag a photoshop file over the application icon, the whole screen flickers and nothing happens.  I am unable to quit Photoshop as the quit choice is grayed out and command-q will not make it quit. I have to force quit.  I can repeat this pattern over and over.  What is happening?  How do I solve this problem?
    --Kenoli

Thanks for the reply.  I am using  Photoshop 11.0.1.  I am using the latest version of Snow Leopard.  I have found both Photoshop and Dreamweaver to be pretty buggy for several versions now.  My suspicions were that they were really engineered for Windows and never really fully implemented for the Mac.  Dreamweaver crashes or hangs on me three or four times a day if I us it all day and does various annoying things like refusing to respond to the delete key after I have used it for a while.  I have pretty much stopped using it to some degree for that reason and also because there is other software that does a lot of coding things I do much more directly and simply.  Also Dreamweaver always seems to struggle to quit when I tell it to quit (that is, it takes a long time and gets hung up at places before it quits) and once it does quit, I always get a message saying that it has unexpectedly quit (even when I have told it to quit).
The problems with Photoshop  (starting with just taking a long time to load)  have escalated to the point I described today, which makes it almost unusable. I just reinstalled Snow Leopard to see if there was anything buggy in the system software.  I will report if problems go away.
Regarding both the refusal to open image files and the grayed out quit command, made me think something like you, i.e. there was some dialogue box open somewhere.  However, I couldn't find anything and I don't use two monitors.
So . . . Adobe just seems to be getting more expensive and more buggy.
Incidentally, why is it still running in Rosetta rather than natively?  Adobe now has a real Intel processor to work with.
