Make pages default program

Ok, I've installed iwork '08 and am wondering why, if i try and open a file from mail or a download I still have to go to 'open with' and select pages. It doesn't just default to pages. Also, when saving pages documents it doesn't give you an option to save as a different type of file (jpeg etc...) therefore I might have problems sending files to people in other formats.
Thanks,
Rod

rod,
The reason Word files don't automatically open in Pages is because you haven't told the system to open ALL Word files in Pages. By selecting Open With, you're telling it to open that one file with Pages. To change them all, you'll see a button below the Open With menu that says Change All. Click on that, and all Word files will open in Pages.
Your second issue is about how to save Pages files in other formats. You have to select File > Export -- not File > Save As. But your example is how to save a Pages file as a jpeg. You can't do that in Pages. You can export to Word, pdf, RTF, or text.

  • Make Pages default program to open my MS Word docs

    Hey friends,
I'm new to Apple World and I'm trying to figure out how to make Pages the default program to open my old MS Word docs. Right now Text Edit opens it.
    Thanks a million!

    Hi Chris,
This is how I do it in OS 10.5 (Leopard). Should be fairly similar in other versions:
Find a .doc file using Finder (Open your hard drive and navigate to it through your folders)
    Click to highlight the file
Go to File > Get Info or type Apple-I
The 4th section down gives you the option to choose an app to open this file with. Select pages.app
Click the Change all button to get all your .doc files to open in Pages by default.
That should all work as described; please write back if it doesn't!

  • Blank Icons on .doc files when make Pages default.

When i make pages default for .doc or .docx files (for exemple), they become blank icons. It's terrible. How to solve this??? I've tried a lot of options but always with no sucess.  I selected the file .doc or .docx, click cmd+I and select Pages to open all documents on this kind........and then all files .doc or docx gains a black icon!!! I have repeated this same operation but forcing/change the icon of the file (with cmd+I and put a pages icon on the up letf side).......result: all files became blank icons...except that one! Anyone have a solution?

I understand Peter, but I work with a lot of files, and I'm very visually on it.
Separate kind of files by their aspect is very important for me.
I don´t need that .doc or .docx have pages icon....I just need an any icon, not a blank icon.
Because numbers do the same to .xls or .xlsx files.
Imagine a Folder with 2500 files (.doc .docx .xls .xlsx .dot.....etctetc) all blank icon files......files that I need to identify quickly.
So, I understand your point of view, but i really need to put icons on .doc ; docx files.....and note one by one.
    Maybe an automator workflow??
    Any soluction??
    Thanks

  • How do you make pages default document reader

    Hi
I have just started using pages and i cant seem to work out how to make it the default application to open up the many documents i have.
Every time i open a document it opens in textedit, i know that you can choose in properties with which program to open it with, but i am getting really fed up of doing this.
is there any way to make pages the default instead of textedit program.

p.s I used to use MS office but i cant be bothered to reinstall it and most of my docs are .doc (office format)

    kb,
You can set .doc files to open in Pages, and it’s surprisingly easy: just go to the Finder, single-click on any .doc file, then type command-I (Get Info). Click on the Open With... menu and select Pages (or navigate to Pages if it’'s not in the menu). To make all .doc files open in Pages, click on the Change All button.
You can do the same thing with other types of files, like RTF or plain text.

  • Make Pages Default For Opening Word Documents

I currently use iWork but also use openOffice, whenever I open up a Word document by double clicking it openOffice opens... How can I make Pages the default application for handling these files?

Walt...THANK YOU...can't tell you how irritating it was for me to, by force of habit, double click on a *.doc file & then have Parallels start to open Windows XP so it could get to MS Word - I just did not want that to happen...what a pain. I tried to find a way to have Pages be the default program for *.doc files but couldn't until I read your entry. As a new Mac convert from years & years of Windows use, let me say it again...Thank You

  • How to make Pages default app for .doc files

How do you make Pages/Numbers the default app for all .doc/.xls files?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
Highlight a known Word document in the Finder, highlight it & choose Get Info from the File menu. In the Get Info box, click the triangle next to "Open With." Click on this drop-down menu & choose Pages. If Pages is not a choice, choose "Other" & navigate to the Pages application. Now click the "Change" button under the text that asks if you want to open all documents like this with Pages. Repeat with Excel documents & Numbers.
Be aware that the icons for these documents will be plain white icons.

  • Make Pages default text editor

How do I make Pages the default text editor? (Double click a .txt file and Pages opens instead of Appleworks)

    Hello kelwhite01,
welcome to the Pages Discussions. Select a ".txt" Document in a Finder window and open the Infowindow for it (shortcut: "command" and "i"). In the middle of the window you see a section titled "Open with". There you can choose the app you want to open the selected document with. After choosing Pages, press the button at the bottom of the section to order the system to open every document of that type with Pages.

  • Adobe Photoshop 5 mixing with Win 7 system files. Cannot make it default program!!!

I have installed Photoshop program on my Win 7 Ultimate system in two versions (CS 4 and CS 5,5) - and don't ask me why. (Adobe cannot help in another issue with Acrobat Pro, so I HAVE TO have installed those two).
Now funny thing comes: while choosing default program to open photoshop files I try tu point CS5 version - as it is better, and newer - unsuccesfully though. Everytime I am doing so, I have CS4 Photoshop set as result. Is anyone able to help in this? I am fighting so many bugs in Adobe software since system reinstallation, that it is simple unbearable. Somoene please HELP!!!

Having more than one Ps program installed does not mess up the OS.
I have 8 different versions of Ps on my PC (CS5, CS6, CC, CC2014 each x32 and x64) and they all run OK (incl several plugins in each version); tho I NEVER run two at the same time because some of them share the same common files and if you run 2 Ps together (same time) they can break.
I run several programs at same time like Ps, Painter, LR, Br, CorelDraw, Illustrator etc...and more, and all run OK together.  I'm using win7x64pro.
In the *open with*, do you see the option to *choose default program* (at bottom of the 'open with' list)?  You can select any program on your PC and do not have to (but can) set it as default for that file type.
And if you open the add/remove OS folder, are all your expected programs and their versions listed?

  • Make lightroom default program for raw files

I purchased Lightroom 5 after a trial version expired.  (I believe the version was 5.2, not sure.)  I got the actual DVD with the activation code on the box.
    Current OS is Windows 7.
At first I ran the updates from the internet (had a bit of trouble with the DVD opening) and it loaded version 5.5, and I used the activation code.  Everything went well, but when I try to open a raw file (Sony/.arw extension), it doesn't give me the option to use Lightroom as the default program for this action.  It doesn't show the program at all, and when I go into browse and select it, it still won't come up.
So, I uninstalled everything, rebooted etc, then loaded up the DVD and got the DVD to work this time.  Again, I think the version came up 5.2.  Went to assign .arw files to Lightroom, and - no problem whatsoever.  Lightroom showed up as a program, like it hadn't before.  I then ran the update again to 5.5, and I'm running into the exact same thing, where I can't set LR as the default program.  Possibly the registry is not right?  It's just no longer seeing Lightroom as a program in the "Open With" option (when I reinstalled, it wiped out the 'open with LR' I had attached to the files.)  I can open up Lightroom itself just fine, but I can't just click on a raw file and have it open.
Any ideas on how to fix this, and why the earlier version was okay, but the update wiped out the 'open with' option?
    Thanks,
    Carmen

It is common misconception that LR should open images.
What happens is that LR opens LR catalogs, not images.  Images are imported after LR has started up.  You can double-click on a LR Catalog, an .lrcat, file, or you can drag-and-drop a LR catalog file onto the LR icon, and either will cause LR to open, but that is all.  If you ever opened an image with LR it would hang and be difficult to fix.
I think maybe LR 1.x would automatically import images if you dragged them to it, but that was shut down several versions ago.
LR can also be set to open when you insert a memory card, via a checkbox in preferences.
You can also open LR via a shortcut, and then drag-and-drop a folder onto the main image area in Library mode and that'll initiate an import.  This is actually what I do for every import.

  • Make Adobe default program for PDF's

My son in law school just got a new MacBook and sent me the following email question.
    Hey Dad,
Do you know how to set Adobe as the default app to open PDF's. Currently is set to open with "preview", and I can't figure out how to change.
The option to "use as default" is not in the preferences of either program.

    Any suggestions?

Hi, I am having the same problem and the change all suggestion has not done the trick.
    Here is what I did:
    1. Found an existing PDF
    2. GEt Info on selected file
    3. Expand the Open With
    4. Select Adobe Reader
    5. Change all
So here is what did and did not happen
    1. All PDFs have the Adobe Icon
    2. Double Clicking opens the file in Adobe
    3. When I download a PDF in Firefox, the only option under open with is Preview. Adobe is not in the dialog box of applications.
    4. I can however save to my disk and then double click to open with Adobe
I am using a MacBook wiht OS 10.4.8 wiht Firefox 2.0 as my default browser.
Any suggestions on why Adobe is not a choice to open a PDF from a website?

    Denny,
Open Image Capture which is located in your Applications Folder.
Connect your device to your computer, then turn the device on.If the device is locked with a passcode, enter it.
Select the device in the Devices list.
Choose Image Capture from the “Connecting this [device] opens” pop-up menu.Click “Show device settings” if you don’t see that pop-up menu.

  • Make gmail default program under services menu

I want to have gmail as my default mail program if I email from within another program such as word or circus ponies notebook. I already have apple mail going through gmail, etc., and I tried setting Firefox as my default mail reader from within mail. I have gmail set as default mail program within Firefox. However, if I am in an application and use the services menu to mail something -- apple mail still opens, not gmail.
    Any suggestions? Thanks!

Firefox can not be a default email program because it's not an email client. only an email program like Mail, Thunderbird or Entourage can be set to be the default email client. google made an app that will simulate an email client and can be set to be the default email client.
    http://toolbar.google.com/gmail-helper/notifier_mac.html
if you set it to be the default then any email link you click in any web browser will open in your default web browser in gmail webmail interface. However, that will have no effect on built in mail services available from Services menu. they are hard programmed to use Mail.app only.

  • How to disable APP and change default program in registry

    Dear all,
it is possible to disable all the app (that appears in the start screen) in Windows 8.1?
Our users are a little bit confused and we prefer to use the old program (example Windows Photo Viewer and not Photos APP).
Let me know if it is possible and how to do it.
If yes, where we can edit the registry key to make the default program Windows Photo Viewer? And other programs? We would like to set Windows Photo Viewer as default app on all our computer in domain. It is possibile to edit this setting in registry?
    And not manual from GUI?
Our PC are in a domain.
    Thank you,

    Hi,
According to your description, you want to open the file without using metro app.
We don't need to disable all metro app.
You can use the Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) tool to change the default programs associated with a file name extension.
1.Deploy your Windows image to a test computer.
2 Log into Windows and use Control Panel to configure your default application associations.
3.You can export the default application associations that you have configured to an XML file on a network share or USB drive. For example, at a command prompt type the following command:
    Dism /Online /Export-DefaultAppAssociations:\\Server\Share\AppAssoc.xml
4.Use GP server to enable the following group policy to modify the default Associations on the client machine.
    Computer Configuration>Administrative Templates>Windows Components>File explorer>Set a default associations configuration file.
Regarding how to export or Import Default Application Associations, please refer to the following article:

  • How to set default program to open file types

What I am wanting to do is be able to open music saved in Apple Lossless format in other than iTunes, say in maybe Quicktime. I have most of my music in this format and want to keep them that way so when I want to add an album to iTunes it's already in lossless format. But as it is now with iTunes as the default, anytime I even play one song it is imported into iTunes and I have to go back and delete it.
I am sure there is a way to make the default program for .m4a files not iTunes?

If you are just previewing music files you can also click on the song and hit your SpaceBar on the keyboard to listen to the song.
