Making a gradient fade out of an image in Illustrator?

You know when you wish to have a picture, slowly fading out/in - merging with the background, in Photoshop, you add a layer mask, and with the gradient tool, and it does the job.
How can we do a similar effect in Illustrator?
1- File/Place the image
2- ???
In the past, I use to make/crop/cut all my pictures in Photoshop, then build my document in Illustrator, and import them in. However, I now wish to do it all in Illustrator. I think I'll get a better quality and loose less resolution in the process. Can I?
HELP!!!

You do not loose less resolution by editing a photo in Illustrator. If the image is bitmapped - like all photos are - you do not make it resolution-independent by bringing it into Illustrator and working on it there. Only Illustrator native objects are, and those are vector based.

  • Gradients dropping out when opening PDFs in Illustrator

    Hi everyone. I work for a large format printing company. We receive thousands of files every year from many different designers. We started to notice that gradients would drop out of some PDFs when opening them in Illustrator but they would preview fine when opened in Acrobat. I searched high and low for an explanation for this glitch. The only response I received is "Stop opening exported PDFs in Illustrator." This is an unsatisfactory answer for someone that needs to preflight directly in the Illustrator program. I've done a ton of research and have been racking my brain for the last 2 years and have finally found sufficient workarounds for this issue. The downfall with these workarounds: all spot colors located in the gradients will convert to CMYK mixes. I'm still researching to see if there is a way to keep spot colors intact in these areas.
    A little back story: InDesign is converting the gradients into something called NChannel. It enables more accurate handling of color blending by including additional dot gain and color mixing info. Both InDesign and Acrobat have the ability to display these elements whereas Illustrator, from what I’m finding, does not. Which is why we’re seeing gradient elements drop out when opened in Illustrator.
    Workaround for CMYK Gradients
    Open PDF exported from INDD in Acrobat
    Go to Tools > Print Production > Convert Colors
    Object Type: Smooth Shade (this tells Acrobat to hone in on Gradients only)
    Color Type: DeviceCMYK
    Check Embed next to Conversion Profile (should be SWOP)
    Expand Document Colors on the right and Select DeviceCMYK in Color Spaces then click ok
    Save the PDF
    Workaround for 1 Spot Color in Gradients (Converts Spot Color located in Gradient to CMYK – all other Spots stay intact)
    Open PDF exported from INDD in Acrobat
    Go to Tools > Print Production > Convert Colors
    Object Type: Smooth Shade (this tells Acrobat to hone in on Gradients only)
    Color Type: Spot Color
    Check Embed next to Conversion Profile (should be SWOP)
    Expand Document Colors on the right and Select the Spot that is located in the Gradient in Color Spaces then click ok
    Save the PDF
    Workaround for 2 Spot Colors in Gradients (Converts Spot Colors located in Gradient toCMYK – all other Spots stay intact)
    Expand Document Colors on the right and Select the DeviceN spot color that is located in the Gradient in Color Spaces then click ok
    Save the PDF
    Please test it and let me know if you run into any issues with these workarounds.  I'm always looking for new problems to solve!

    you said--"...needs to preflight directly in the Illustrator program. I've done a ton of research and have been racking my brain for the last 2 years and have finally found sufficient workarounds for this issue"
    Your workarounds seem time consuming and (possibly) unnecessary for the following reasons:
    1. large format printers use 4-8 colors to achieve color (so spot colors shouldn't be an issue)
    2. Acrobat Pro has it's own 'preflight' function that works fairly well
    additionally (don't know if you know this) there is an add-on to acrobat called 'Pitstop' (google it) that allows just about any change/correction/alteration to be made to a PDF
    ...and...opening a PDF in illustrator (that wasn't created in illustrator--do you know how to determine this?) can lead to many problems i.e. gradients dropping out, text reflow, etc.
    as far as testing your workarounds, seriously, who has the time when there are tools available that make using them unnecessary (this assumes that you have created these 'workarounds' to match your worflow--but a nearly pure PDF workflow should work in this day and age, depending on your RIP and software).

  • Image Fade Out/Load new Image/Fade In

    I think I am having an event timing issue. My desire is to
    change the "header" image on each selection of a tabNavigator. I
    can swap the image without issue through a img.load process. I
    placed the image on a canvas and set the "showEffect" and
    "hideEffect" on the canvasto fadeIn and fadeOut. (I actually have 2
    images on the canvas) On the tabNavigator "change" event I call my
    getImage() function and set canvs.visible=false, I have the tab
    index for img.load=headerPic[idx] and then I set
    canvs.visible=true; The result is that I do not get the first
    visible change, I think. Tab 1 is initialized to visible in
    ionComplete, clicking on tab 1 has no effect since it is selected
    already. When tab 2 is selected the image changes to the new image
    immediately and then fadesOut. Tab 3 then will fadeIn. Also
    regardless of the tab selected, if I select another tab the ongoing
    fade effect will continue on the newly selected tab. It seems the
    load method doesn't care about effects - so I don't know how to
    sequence these effects.
    Thanks in advance.

    You can use the completeEffect on Image to have an effect
    every time an
    image loads, such as you can see used here
    http://examples.adobe.com/flex2/inproduct/sdk/photoviewer/PhotoViewer.html,
    but I don't think there's a corresponding effect that you can
    apply to the
    old image before the change.
    I think you're going to need to use ActionScript to get the
    control over the
    effects that you want, so you can call either the end() or
    the reverse()
    method on the effect when the graphic needs to change in
    mid-effect.

  • Some question about fade in // fade out by hideEffect and showEffect in Actionscript

    Some question about fade in // fade out by hideEffect and
    showEffect in Actionscript
    Please kindly take a look at the following page:
    http://camusmiu.no-ip.com/HounganQuestion/PictureHolderTest.html
    (can view source)
    I tried to make an image preloaded and scale the image to
    it's preferred size.
    When I came to consolidate the stuff into a component, I
    found the application goes weird as I implementation the show/hide
    effect.
    The third trial which just hide and show the images directly,
    instead of using viewstack, fail to bring the second image onto
    screen.
    It just used fadeOut instead of fadeIn(you see there is a
    flash of the second image)
    After some study of showEffect and hideEffect behaviour,
    seems the mechanism of hide/show a component works in this way:
    this._fadeIn:Fade = new Fade();
    this._fadeIn.alphaFrom = 0;
    this._fadeIn.alphaTo = 1;
    this._fadeIn.duration = 1000;
    this._fadeOut:Fade = new Fade();
    this._fadeOut.alphaFrom = 1;
    this._fadeOut.alphaTo = 0;
    this._fadeOut.duration = 1000;
    Component_A.visible = true;
    Component_A.setStyle("showEffect", this._fadeIn);
    Component_A.setStyle("hideEffect", this._fadeOut);
    then when I set Component_A.visible = false, the sequence
    works like following:
    Component_A.visible = true
    Component_A.visible = true, alpha = 100;
    Component_A.visible = true, alpha = 50;
    Component_A.visible = true, alpha = 0;
    Component_A.visible = false;
    The above sequence works visa versa as:
    Component_A.visible = false;
    Component_A.visible = true, alpha = 0;
    Component_A.visible = true, alpha = 50;
    Component_A.visible = true, alpha = 100;
    Component_A.visible = true;
    (Correct me if i am wrong)
    ========================================================================================== ====
    From what I observe from the application, I have two
    question.
    1) When more than one component using the this._fadeIn,
    this_fadeOut as the hide/show effects, the component in instance of
    this._fadeIn? will it mess out if more than one component using the
    fadeIn instance in the same time?
    2) from the third component, i.e. PictureHolder3, when I load
    other the picture , it fade out the new image instead of fading
    in... Seems there is problem if I hide show too frequent. I think
    when I hide then show right the way, the component only do the hide
    part...
    Can someone pls look into it and tell me what I did wrong?
    Cuz in normal practice I don't think appropriate to use ViewStack
    in Actionscript...

    Hello Jack,
    Currently, you can only import an swf file or you can embed videos from youtube, vimeo etc. into Muse / add HTML5 Video to Your Website.
    Take a look at these simple videos that explain the currently available processes for adding videos in Muse, in a step by step method:

  • Fade out a video clip

    How do I fade out the last image on a video clip?

    the way I do it, or what I think you're trying to do, is go to the last frame you want to fade out, in your case the last frame, go to edit and select 'create still image' or something to that effect, and in the raw footage bank a 5second still image should apear of that frame. then click and drag it, go to the transition section and select the type of fade out you wish to use. Hope that helped.

  • MovieClip: Fade Out then Fade In

    I need to produce an image gallery which when a thumbnail is pressed it loads a new image, fades out the previous image then fades in the new one.
    I have it fading in but I don't know how to fade the previous image out before.
    Here is my code so far:
    import mx.transitions.Tween;
    import mx.transitions.easing.*;
    var imageLoader:MovieClipLoader = new MovieClipLoader() ;
    var imageListener:Object = new Object () ;
    imageLoader.addListener(imageListener);
    imageListener.onLoadInit = function() {
           var fadeIn:Tween = new Tween(holderMain.holderImage, "_alpha", Regular.easeIn, 0, 100, 60, false);
    holderMain.holderButton.button1.onRelease = function() {
           imageLoader.loadClip("one.jpg",holderMain.holderImage);
    holderMain.holderButton.button2.onRelease = function() {
           imageLoader.loadClip("two.swf",holderMain.holderImage);
    Does someone understand how to do this?

    How do I set it up so that it loads - then fades out - then fades in?

  • Simultaneous fade out and fade in and image

    I currently have code that fades out on canvas of a view
    stack and fades in a second canvas of the view stack. However, my
    desired behavior is that the fade out happens as the fade in

    Sure thing. If the idea is to make it look like A is
    dissolving into B,
    I would leave B at full opacity the whole time. Just reduce
    A's opacity.
    If you fade one out and fade one in at the same time, there's
    this "dead
    spot" when both are at half opacity, and the whole image
    seems to dip out
    momentarily.
    You could use the Tween class for this. Look up "Tween
    class" in the
    documentation and you'll find a section on "About the Tween
    class" as well
    as the Tween class entry itself, in the Components Language
    Reference. Use
    _alpha as the property to tween.
    > why not just make image A and B animate for 5 seconds
    > in iys own timeline. That way it wount interfeer with
    anything
    > else.
    There are definitely times to animate by hand (think complex
    character
    animation), but there are also times to animate via
    ActionScript. If you
    want something to animate for 5 seconds in a timeline, you
    have to take into
    consideration what framerate you're running and do the math.
    If you need
    five seconds at 24fps, you need 120 frames for that. What if
    you decide to
    change your mind? What if you need 10 seconds? Now you need
    240. What if
    you change the movie's over all framerate? With ActionScript
    and the Tween
    class, you only need one frame.

    actionScript...

    Code can actually be harmful if you're unfamiliar with it.
    ;) More
    important than finding code is making sure you have a
    programmer's mindset.

    If I use Captivate 5, I do not have any problem.  Any suggestions?

    Are you forgetting that a rollover object has two parts?  It has a hit area and the object that appears when you mouse over the hit area. Each part can have different settings in the Properties tab. In a  rollover caption, the object that appears is a text caption.  In a rollover image, the object is an image.
    If you select the rollover object on the timeline, the Properties you see for it in the Properties tab are for the hit area.  So having fade in or fade out set there will not affect the object that appears on mouseover.
    If you select the caption or image on the stage in Edit mode, the properties shown in the Properties tab are for that specific object and can be different from the hit area of the same rollover object.
    In your case, make sure that your image is set to have fade in or fade out.  Fading on a hit area of a rollover object is not really useful at all.
