Master page for first page of chapter?

I want to make sure I am using the right approach.
I have a 150 page book with 12 chapters. Most of the pages in the book have page number and running heads with the chapter name at the top of the page. That is working OK. For the 12 pages that start a chapter, I don't want the running head at the top - only the page number appears at the bottom of the page.
Master pages, right? I started with all pages as "A" pages and then assigned the 12 pages for the beginning of the chapter to be "B" pages. Looks great.
But then the project manager comes along and asks me to try the book in 12 point instead of 11 point. I edit a few paragraph styles. Everything repaginates, and now I have to find the 12 places where a chapter starts, change it from "A" to "B" master page, then find the old 12 pages that previously started a chapter and change them from "B" back to "A".
Every time he freaking changes his mind, I am fixing 24 pages (OK - 22 pages, since the first page stays in place). Am I missing something really obvious - is there a way to say "Every time there is a Chapter Title paragraph style, that page should be assigned "B" Master Style?". I realize I could use an INDB with 12 INDD files inside, but that seems like overkill for a small book.

I think there are some scripts floating around here onthe forum that will assigne a master based on the paragraph style, but my personal approach is to break the document into individual stories (not different docs, just different text threads, for each story) for each chapter. If you do that, any editing effects will be confined to the last page in each chapter.

Synchronizing Master Pages in Book

I seem to have hit a Catch-22 and I'm hoping somebody can help.
I'm working on a book consisting of 25 chapters. Currently it's all in one file and that's becoming pretty unwieldy. So I'm breaking it up into separate files and using the book features in ID.
Every chapter starts the same way -- the first page has a big header with the chapter name. Text starts about halfway down the page. All other pages have folios with chapter names and page numbers, etc. And all the text is threaded together into a single flow.
So I've created two master spreads, one for the first page and the other for the other pages. I use those masters to create pages and then thread them together. I put together all the chapters this way, and added the chapter names, but didn't add text. And then I realized that the text box on the first page starts at the wrong place. I want it to start a bit higher on the page -- making the box bigger vertically. So I change the master page in the style source and I synchronize.
And that doesn't work. Now I have two text boxes on each starting page -- one with the old height and one with the new one.
According to the docs, if a master item has been overridden, and then when you synchronize, the item becomes detached. So I guess my question is: how do I add text to a text box, or thread it, without overriding it?
Or, more specifically -- how do I change the size of a text box on every starting page of every chapter?

Jeez -- now I feel like I'm going nuts. Thought I had it figured out. So I went and created some chapters. And bang, I'm right back where I was. So now I'm checking every bloody keystroke.
Say I have two chapters: 1 & 2. Chapter 1 is the style source.
I command-option click on the frame on the first page in chapt 1, so it's overridden. I do nothing to chapter 2 (the same frame is not overridden)
Then I change the master page in chapt 1, making it shorter.
So far so good. The change propagates when I synch.
But if I just cmd-opt click in the same frame in chapt 2 -- so both frames are overridden -- bang, when I synch, the frame is detached in chapt 2.
No threading required. Just overriding the frame in both the style source and the same frame in the other chapter.

Change master page

I'm using indesign CS3 with javascript.
I have a document with 11 chapters, every chapter has the same Master-page.
Every chapter has 1,2, ..pages, the master page for the content in the chapter is not the same as the chapter Master-page.
Every content from a chapter has a different master page, than the content from an other chapter.
this means that i have 12 master-pages
example:
Chapter 1:           master-page A
     content1:       master-pageB
Chapter2:           master-page A
     content2:       master-page C
Every title from the chapter and content will be placed into a running header with a specifiek paragraph style.
At the moment i have a little javascript, this script checks on every page for the paragraph style from a chapter.
and the "master-page A" will bee placed on the right page.
how can i extend my script for the content master-pages?
Is it possible that i can retrieve the text from the running header from the chapters?

ID Master Pages vs Powerpoint / Captivate Master Slides

Hello,
I'm new to InDesign and I just can't get the way Master Pages are supposed to work.
I though they were pages like the ones in Powerpoint or Captivate : you put placeholders on the page and format them the way you want, then when you create new pages based on those masters you just fill in the pre-formatted fields.
This is not the case in InDesign. Everything's locked ! What's the point ?
It's fine for background pictures, pages numbers and that kind of stuff but why would you put text and image placeholders you just can't edit ?
Of course, you can override item but you just lose link to the master page.
A simple example : I made a master page with chapter title on a line (white on a grey background) with automatic numbering and a block of text underneath.
Now, if I apply this master to a page, I just can't type in text, autonumbering is useless. I have to overide elements but what if I change title background color and decide text should be on two columns ? If I reapply Master on my page, I get modified stuff underneath overidden elements !
I hope you see what I mean and that you will give me clues to the best approach to InDesign master pages.

Make the border and column guid lines in page layout.
Use text frames with 2 columns best practice is to set up them via object styles.
Set a pragraph style for your text.
Set another paragraph style for your headline: Make column Span over all with a specified distance after, Paragraph Ruler for the Grey bar, white text
But don't use Character Styles, except for single words, automatic numbers, all things which are different from the residing pargraph properties.
Avoid overrides on pages, as these are causing problems in syntax and in editing later. Beter is to use a different master page, where you can use overrides.
E.g. it makes problems when you have overrides and want to reapply the same master again.
Or it makes problems when you create PDFs for unlimitted access or when you export EPUBs or HTML.

Master Page: Alternatives (Subform Set) works only for the first page

Hi everybody!
I have bumped into a very weird problem with ADOBE Forms:
When I create an 'Alternative' in a Context area and then place it on a Master Page, it works only for the first page. On the rest of pages it always show the 'TRUE' subform, regardless of the condition (which is not changed, of course). Absolutely the same Alternative works perfectly in a Content area for all pages.
Has anybody seen something like this? Any ideas why?

This happens because of the processing of the form.

You have to put a own variable, which is set with the value you want in the very beginning.
I know, it is not that logical in the first moment, but it makes sense.

Changing the chapter title automatically on a master page

hi, I'm hoping someone can help. I've just received an Indesign file from a colleague which has an automatic feature which pulls the chapter heading from the document and places in on the right hand side. the master page has this written on it <chapter heading on right> In the past, I would have created a master page for each new chapter if I wanted to have the chapter title on the right, but this seems to be a far superior way of doing things. How do I go about doing it? I can't find the function anywhere on InDesign. thanks, Jean

How to position chapter number on the master page according to the chapter number?

I'm working with a catalog for a customer with about 250 pages divided into apx 30 chapters. The person who made this document in the first place have a separate master page for each Chapter.
If I use the the Running Header (Paragraph style) text variable I can use the same master page on all chapters - this will be much easier I think.
BUT I have a problem because the chapter number is going to be displayed in different position according to the number (along on the edge of the page with white text in a black rectangle, with the first chapter number on top, the next one beneath and so on - so the reader of the book can see the chapters just by looking at the edge of the book without opening it)
Is there any possibility to have the Chapter Number text variable to be displayed in different location on the page based on the number it self? Or do you have any other ways to solve this in a easy way?

Well, you can not create dependencies like this, but you could use nested master pages. You would still need 30 master pages for 30 chapters, in order to place the chapter number in different positions, but you
would only need one or two main master pages for the rest of master page content. That would make it at least easier to change something on all master pages at once.

How to specify Master page depending on odd or even first page

We've set up our books to delete empty pages and so that we have chapters starting on both odd and even pages. Also, the first pages of our chapters are formatted differently than the rest of the Left and Right Master pages. We would like to have two Master pages for the first page of the chapter, one for odd pages and the other for even, so that we can offset the margins, leaving a larger margin on the side towards the binding.
My question is how do I set up the book so that when it generates, if the chapter starts on an odd page, it automatically applies the Master page for odd first pages and when the first page is even, it applies the Master page for even first pages?
We have FramMaker 8 and are running it on Windows XP Professional.

Assuming that you want this to happen automagically, I'd use the system default Right and Left Master pages as your chapter opener pages because Frame will apply those automatically depending on how the pages and chapters fall in the book. Then set up the internal chapter pages with whatever other structure you're using and apply those internal masters to the normal content that as you go.
If you can't do that for some reason, I would look at doing it with a FrameScript that goes through the book and applies the alternating pages as a final production step.
You could set up the first tag in the chapter to call a specific master page, but that would be manual and could quickly go south if any chapters ahead of a given chapter change the pagination. It would have to be manual because a given tag can only call one master page -- there isn't a way to apply logic to call one or the other depending on the situation.

Can I specify more than one para tag for master page mapping?

I want to map the same master page to be used by four different tags. Must I create a new row in the mapping table for each or can I separate the tag names by a comma and a space, for example, "Body, Bullet, Heading1, Note"?
I tried the latter and expected it to work, but it did not.

That works, and has no side effects that I've seen.
It appears, by the way, that FM applies the MP based on the first para tag found that has a MasterPageMaps table entry, so multiple matches per page, even conflicting, are not a problem, as long as getting the MP for first-found is OK with you.

How to display page no for different master pages in one adobe form application

Hi All,
we have requirement where we need to display page nos in different master pages in one single adobe form.
For the First form the page nos should be displayed pgno of total pages and for 2nd form the page no shuld be displayed as pgno of total pg.
so please help me with any script or suggestions for displaying the page no accordingly in different master pages. Your suggestions are greatly appreciated.

We have 2 different Master pages and 2 Body pages. For the seccond Master page the page no are comming correct like 1 of 3 ,2 of 3 and 3 of 3 but for First master page the page no are comming 0 of 3 in all of the page its not displaying the current page no in 1st master page.
Screen shots are attached for first master page and Hierarchy Node.Pls see the highlighted section in 2nd image.

How do I populate my date fields placed on Master Page for multiple pages?

I have a dynamic form with flowing fields. I inserted date fields using the Master Pages tab within Adobe LiveCycle Designer ES2, Windows 7 OS. I have only 1 Master Page. Everything on the form is working properly, except when I have multiple pages, the date fields are blank on all but the first page. One of the date fields has javascript in the exit event to calculate the second date field. I can manually edit the subsequent page(s) date fields, but I don't want the end user to have to do that. I want the date fields on the new pages to equal the date fields on the first pages. Below is my output with notes to provide a visualization of what I'm looking for.

Yes, both date fields are on the Master Page. The first one is set to "User entered - Required" and the second to "Calculated - User Can Override"
And that's right, I used your script to calculate the second date field. The only thing I changed was the field name, and used 6 days instead since I wanted the calendar days to only run a full week, like start on a Monday and end on Sunday.

That is not the issue.
Pages/OSX does not save files with crop marks and bleeds.
It also by default saves transparency, which is involved in a lot of Pages' better features, at a rubbishy 72 dpi resolution.
It also makes it extremely difficult to maintain mono-color like black only text, has no spot color and makes color management opaque.
It really is only meant for amateur publishing and printing to your desktop printer.
A commercial printer who is willing to use and print from Pages may have better results but at the cost of considerable micro-management which defeats the point of this "cheap" solution.

Interactive buttons on master pages only appearing on first instance in document [CS6]

I have a document being created for on-screen use that has next and previous buttons in the design. These buttons are on the master page with the 'On Click go to next/previous page' behaviour applied.
When the document is exported the buttons only appear on the first instance of that master page. IE. If pages 2-20 are created from that master, the buttons only appear on page 2.
I've seen other people reporting this problem in some other threads without an answer, so hopefully someone will see this who knows what the issue is.
I presume this is something to do with CS6, this is occuring in a document that was originally created in CS3 or 4. It's been revived for a new edition, and the buttons used to work perfectly under the old version, but now they're behaving as described. I've recreated them from scratch as well as using the previous version, but the results are the same.

Wasn't there an Acrobat issue that affected this as well? Make sure that is updated, too.
While I'm on it, this is being viewed in Acrobat/Reader, right? Anything else, especially Mac Preview is a bit of crapshoot.

InDesign CS5.5 Exporting PDF master page hyperlinks only work on first 2 pages

We recently upgraded from CS5 to CS5.5 and now our hyperlinks that go to different pages in the PDF only are working on the first 2 pages of each document in the book. We have about 30 documents wrapped up in a indesign book. On the master page we have hyperlinks that allow users to quickly go to the index in the back of the book. After the CS5.5 upgrade the hyperlinks only work the the first 2 pages of each document. We export to PDF(print) with hyperlinks enabled.
I have tried the below:
- I have tried 2 different computers
- Deleted and re-created the indesign preference file
- deleted and re-created the hyperlinks

Can you recommendd the best way to manage the following:
I'm on a Mac. Created an enewsletter for a client in Indesign CS5 with 7 "click here"s throughout the document. The hyperlinks are to connect w other PDF documents not URLs.
Where will I have the best luck creating the hyperlinks - Indesign or in the PDF I export? I have Acrobat Pro if I need to create the hyperlinks in the PDF.
Except I can't figure out how to create the links in either program as far as what name to designate and where do the PDFs reside so people can link to them? And do I enter the file name of the PDF connected to the particular "click here."
