Math characters in preview

I've recently noticed that some math characters (most notably the nabla character) don't always show up correctly when I view a PDF file using preview. If I open the same file with Acrobat it shows up correctly. I am running 10.6.2 on my Intel-based iMac. I don't think I had this problem when I was running 10.5.x, but it's possible I just don't remember. Does anyone else have this problem or is there something I can try to do to fix it?

Just as a note, when I upgraded to Snow Leopard recently, I noticed the same thing. It's not with all papers, but a handful end up with bad rendering of LaTeX math. It seems that installing Snow Leopard somehow messes up the TeX installation but only by a little. I re-installed LaTeX afterwards and it corrected some of the issues but not all. I've spent too long trying to figure out how to repair everything (after Snow Leopard, MATLAB began rendering LaTeX incorrectly in plots, which was also something I was trying to address by reinstalling the most recent LaTeX distribution) so I'm just going to do whatever possible to ignore these issues.
If you find any correction or resolution to the maths rendering issue, please share.

  • The Math characters "="& "-" are faded out

    Hello,
In an iMac G4 running Tiger, I have a Pages '09 file. In that file, when I type Math characters like "=" or "-" they appear faded out. In the format bar there are 3 options: "Bold", "Italic" and "Underline"; the first two are also faded out.
    What can I do?
Jorge Lucas (the guy from Rio Grande do Sul)

Is this it? It has a very restricted set of characters and can't imagine it is the right font for maths.
If you want special maths symbols:
Menu > Edit > Special Characters > seek out the unicode characters that you want

  • Missing/corrupted non-english characters in Preview

I know there have been posts on this recently, but this is such a significant problem that I thought it worth keeping live.
Preview does not display non-english characters in PDFs properly. Things like greek characters are either displayed as the english equivalent or are missing or something else more bizzare. This happens on my MBP and my partners MB, both running Leopard. Acrobat, Word etc have no problems. I had no issues with Tiger
I would like to report this directly to Apple but I couldn't find how...

  • Math characters are being displayed incorrectly in a webpage. eg. Þ is being displayed instead of what I think should be ⇒

I am using Firefox 24.0 in Linux Mint.
I am currently doing a math test. Incorrect characters are being displayed.
There are only true/false questions on this math test. The questions on it are supposed to be very easy basic algebra questions, but because the characters are not loading properly, I cannot tell what they are.
A few examples from the test:
Are the following statements true or false:
    |-7|=Ö49=7
    Ö8-Ö29=Ö(-21)
    Ö8-Ö29=-Ö21
    3x=6 Þ x=2
    (x-2)(x+2) = 1 Þ x-2 = 1 or x+2 = 1
Based on how they are being used, I assume Ö should be a √, and that Þ should be a | or ⇒
What is happening here? How do I fix this?
    Are my guesses correct?

What font is specified if you check that via the right-click context menu in the built-in Inspector?
Can you post a link to a publicly accessible page (i.e. no authentication or signing on required)?

  • Problem with printing Polish characters on paper printouts.

    Scenario..1
Text Module TM being used in smartform. TM uses a style which has font ARIAL.
TM is translated into 2 languages English and Polish.
The English version contains Polish characters too, since a couple of Person names have to be printed.
When the form is printed in Polish language : The Polish characters are previewed and printed correctly
When the form is printed in English language : The Polish characters are previewed correctly but not printed correctly
Both the above use the same printer having support for Polish fonts.. so i am asssuming the printer is not the issue here.. i could be wrong.
    Kindly advice.

    Hi!
In which way is the output transferred?
    Something like:
    a)
    ESC 'times new roman'
    My text
    b) already converted into a picture with a specific resolution (e.g. of 300dpi)?
Case a) -> Your printer needs an installed font times new roman / it's using the first installed font or something in this way. Then you need to download a special (user-) font with polish characters. (That's a quite common way. Sometimes already then vendor installs an user font as preparation for some countries.)
Case b) -> No idea, when print preview is already OK, then output should be OK, too.

  • [Solved] Characters not displaying correctly in some applications

When I read things in applications like Firefox I've noticed that sometimes the " symbol is displayed wrong. Sometimes it is shown as what I can only describe as two forward-ticks stuck together (it won't let me paste it), and other times as two back-ticks ``. When I try to paste code over to the rxvt-unicode terminal the forward-tick symbol is displayed as a question mark, as are some other special symbols like maths characters. So I have two questions: are there any terminals that support such special characters? And is my character display problem related to setting up my locales correctly (which I think I already have)?
I followed the steps on the wiki for setting up locales. I uncommented "en_GB.UTF-8 UTF-8" and "en_GB ISO-8859-1" in /etc/locale.gen, ran locale-gen as root, and added  LOCALE="en_GB.utf8" to /etc/rc.conf and "export LANG=en_GB.utf8" to my .zshrc. locale -a shows that the correct locales are installed.

See this pdf for fixes: unix.derkeiler.com/pdf/Mailing-Lists/Fr … g00564.pdf.
Type 'locale' on the console to find out your locale. Mine is en_GB.utf8.
Now add the following to your shell profile or ~/.xinitrc.
I already had this in my .zshrc:
    export LANG=en_GB.utf−8
But I think the LC variable was overriding it. I Changed my LC_ALL to:
    export LC_ALL=en_GB.utf8
(It was set to LC_ALL=C before).
The above fixes copy/paste to most terminal apps, but some still misbehave. For example, I had to add this to ~/.emacs:
;; Set language environment for MULE.
    (set−language−environment 'UTF−8)
;; My customization for text modes
    (defun my−text−mode−hook ()
    (auto−fill−mode 1)
    (show−paren−mode t)
    (activate−input−method 'rfc1345) ; Good input method for UTF−8
    (add−hook 'text−mode−hook 'my−text−mode−hook)
More examples are given on page 3 of the pdf.

  • FrameMaker 11 not displaying some math symbols-how to correct or work around?

    Hello,
I created a few equations for a manual, and everything displayed correctly. After I was upgraded to a new computer (same OS - Win 7), all the minus signs in the equations I made aren't displaying—all I get are (?)s.
I've tried creating a new equation, but the minus symbol still isn't displaying. Strange to me that it's only the minus symbol not displaying; all other operators display correctly.
I'm wondering if this is a symbol font issue, or a unicode issue, but after searching the forums all morning (and all afternoon yesterday) I haven't found any information on correcting the issue or working around it.
    *Update*
I had a coworker open the file in question, and the minus symbols all displayed correctly. He is running Frame 11 on XP.
    -Ben

The font used for the math symbols is specified in the maker.ini with the MathFamily=Symbol entry in the [Fonts] section.
I've tried playing around with changing this in FM11 and FM12, but I always get the minus sign to appear in both versions. [There is a minor bug in FM12 no longer supporting the backslash sequences, so I was checking if other things were pooched.]
The math characters, on the other hand, are defined in the fminit\mathchar.cfg file, e.g.
      < alpha      61 Symbol Regular>
      < beta      62 Symbol Regular>
      < plus      2b Times Regular>
      < equal      3d Times Regular>
      < minus      d0 Times Regular>
    etc.
Notice that there is a mix of Font Families specified in the cfg file. It could be that if Times is missing and FM doesn't properly substitute proprly, one may get the unknown character.
Try changing the font definitions in the mathchar.cfg file (and make a back-up so that it can be restored if this gets messed up).

  • Missing Font Helvetica Neue LT

    Hey.
I've got a Problem with my Adobe InDesign CS6.
When i want to open a file it says there are missing Fonts.
The Fonts that are missing are:
Helvetica Neue LT LT 55 Roman
Helvetica Neue LT LT 75 Bold
Helvetica Neue LT LT 45 Light
So i looked them up in the Adobe store to buy them, but i can only find the Helvetica Neue LT STD 55 Roman/Bold/Light.
So now my question is, are these the same fonts?
Or where can i buy the fonts that are missing?
    Thanks for your help.

Your fonts have been old T1 fonts which are not supported anymore in modern OS, Win and Mac.
With InDesign you could use them for a while when you copy them into the Font folder which is found in the same folder as your InDesign program.
But I would strongly recommend to buy licenses of modern OTF fonts, these have often a Std or Pro added to their name. Pro have more glyphs and have in most cases support for Cyrillic, Eastern European (Czech, Poland, Hungarian, Turkish) and Greece alphabet, and complete math characters.
When you change to the modern OTF you will have to redefine your styles and check your text flow as some glyph might have a different metric.

  • When I bring my InDesign PDF into Acrobat, the automated reader won't read acronyms!!!

I'm trying to make my InDesign doc 508 Compliant. There are a lot of acronyms in this document. After I've exported my PDF and open it in reader I use the "Read Out Loud" option to make sure everything sounds correct. Whenever the reader comes to an acronym such as DOE or DUD it wants to read them as regular words (doe, dud). How can I tell it to read out each letter individually?
    Please help!
    Thanks guys/gals,

It may be because both DOE and DUD are, in fact, actual words. I inserted hair spaces between the characters, but Preview still pronounced them as words; inserting Thin spaces made it speak out the individual letters. (I just realized I didn't test the in-between 1/6th spaces -- try them.)
I tested with Preview, so it's possible Acrobat doesn't do this the same way. But if it does: it seems you cannot 'hide' the spaces using negative tracking. If you try this, the letters will again be spoken as words.
(Ed.) If these are acronyms, shouldn't you write them as D.O.E. and D.U.D.? That makes it clear to the casual reader you are not using it, like, "This rumor was a total DUD, dude!"

  • MergeField Syntax error issue

I am attempting to print an interest rate in a merge document. MERGEFIELD PNT_12 contains the number 4.625.  When I hit [alt] 9, the document says (!Syntax Error,<) but still works somewhat. Here are examples and results. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
    {=INT({MERGEFIELD PNT_12})\# 00}
    {QUOTE {=INT({MERGEFIELD PNT_12})\* CardText \*Caps
    When I press
[alt] 9 the above statements show
    !Syntax Error, <
    !Syntax Error, <
When the document is saved with the statements shown as !Syntax Error the results are:
    four
    04
Notice that the f is lower case even though there is a \*Caps switch.
When the document is saved with the mergefields toggled to see the Mergefield codes rather than the !Syntax Error, the results are:
    Four
    04
Notice that the f is now capitalized.
Question:  What is wrong with the syntax?

    Word has two representations of the mergefield {MERGEFIELD PNT_12}
One is {MERGEFIELD PNT_12}, and the other is  «PNT_12» , where the << and >> are each single chevron characters (ascii 171 and 187). Normally, you wil never see the «PNT_12»
representation when it is nested inside a field such as { =INT() }. Word just deals with it, and provides the correct answer.
So what I suspect is happening is that Calyx is setting the value of PNT_12 to "<<PNT_12>>", possibly using two less than characters "<" and greater than characters ">" during preview, then inserting the actual value when you merge.
That would explain most of what you are seeing except the lower case result. As for that, I suppose it is possible that Calyx is interpreting the entire field code itself, but getting it wrong.

  • Make emacs+LaTeX/Auctex more WYSIWYG

Ok so I thought I make a new thread on this issue, since I didn't want to hijack the screenshots thread.
    Pank posted this: http://omploader.org/vMmdrZQ
I see his formulae are right there, visible, kinda like WYSIWYG. So is a chapter name, you can see it in bold.
How could I set that thing up?
For example I write a lot of reports using LaTeX, but no fancy stuff, only page headers, titles etc. I often have bold text inside normal text, bigger text for titles etc. How could I set emacs up to see all this while I'm editing? Right now I have to compile my .tex to see the result. It would be nice to see my stuff while editing

  • Preview not showing math Symbols in PDF files

I just upgraded to 10.6.1 and now preview is not showing math symbols like PI and the symbol for integrate, for example. Adobe Reader however displays the same files correctly. Now before anyone says anything about why am I using preview to view a PDF if I have adobe reader i downloaded Adobe reader to see if it was having the same issue. Just as a note the symbols show up in pages, stickies, etc. but not in Preview. If you copy the text in containing the symbol and paste into any of the aforementioned programs it is correctly displayed. I know it is not the font book, also i know it is not the files as other macs running 10.5 have no issues, i have the same programs they do the only difference is i am running 10.6. Anyone else having this issue or know how to fix it? I tried a new user and the same errors occur. No error messages or an other acknowledgment by the OS of error is presented.

I realize that preview has had some changes my main concern is whether or not this is an issue with my installation or if it is an issue with everyone running preview. I realize this is hard to know for sure but if you are having issues with preview displaying characters please let me know. Thanks for the file name for the plist i was not sure if there were other files that effected preview that were not so obvious.

  • Issue Regarding Chinese characters In Smart Form Print preview..

    Hi All,
I am working on a smart form development for chinese users. The requirement is the user will login using English & when the delivery will be issued for output, a check will be done on the country of user. If that comes as china then the international version (C) maintained for that customer will come as output.
Now the problem is even if I login using EN or ZH the below issue I am facing always.
In the database I can view the details in chinese properly by logging in as ZH. During debugging also i checked the data from table ADRC & MAKT is coming in chinese properly. But when i gave the values to be output in SmartForm, it is showing the characters like how it will look if I login using EN & view the table contents.
When i view the data by changing character set as Simplified Chinese then in table i can see chinese texts properly. But when the same data goes to print preview it shows the chinese characters like as it would appear when character set is Unicode or West European..
    Please help..
    Thanks in advance.

    Dear,
print preview and physical printout are two different things.
    PrintPreview:
The data stream will be sent to the frontend and rendered with windows-fonts etc (for backend prints a simulation).
    Printout:
Frontend: You need a printer, that maps the character, you have to use SAPWIN or SAPWINCF when using cascading fonts. The rendering will be done in the windows spooler.
Backend: Your printer needs also a mapping (look like something with UTF8). Also the printer needs the fonts installed because the rendering will be done in the printer!
If you use the pdf-printer in SAP, you need to upload all necessary fonts (TTF) for the pdf-composer. Also you need a unicode pdf printer for that.
