Mavericks Panics a MacBook Pro

I have a late 2012 MacBook Pro (13", 4GB RAM), bought refurbished from the Apple store in early 2013.  It had been running Mt.Lion 10.8.5 without a problem.
This week I installed Mavericks, and it has crashed six times.
I installed Mavericks by first booting the Mavericks installer from a thumb drive, erasing the internal hard-drive, and then installing Mavericks.
During the Migration Assistant phase, I updated only the users and "other" files  (I did not copy over the old Applications).
After that, I installed the Combo Update 10.9.4, Xcode 5.1.1, and Xquartz (via the X11.app).
I ran Software Update and applied updates for iBooks, iTunes, and Safari, and loaded some Safari extensions (new versions of the ones that worked OK in 10.8.5).
The panics happen when dialed-out with a USB modem; maybe half the time. There's no rhyme or reason - it has crashed when I scroll a page in Safari; it has crashed when I was typing in another app while Safari was loading pages.
I've collected six panic files from /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports.  Each one says this:
     Kernel Extensions in backtrace:
         com.apple.nke.ppp(1.9)[CFD35E46-D460-3D02-8E15-96B74492D43E]@0xffffff7fa1caa000 ->0xffffff7fa1cb5fff
BSD process name corresponding to current thread: kernel_task
Disk Utility says the file-system is clean.  I ran 'memtest' and it says memory is OK.  (It's the original memory, nothing changed or added.)  The system doesn't get hot; the battery has a long life.
Here's the text from the latest panic, Kernel_2014-08-30-163214_macbook.panic

Any leads, hints or clues?
I've got output from EtreCheck, as well as output from Linc's script (as both user and admin).
Let me know what else to post.
Thank you!

It could be hardware, but it happens only in 10.9.4.  It runs fine in 10.8.5.
The last crash, about 10 minutes ago, was when I was trying to logon to this site to post this reply. I had been dialed out for only 17 minutes.
The RAM is original.
I've never seen a hardware section of the panic log.  Maybe I have to look somewhere else?
The crashes only happen when I'm dialed out, using a USR5637 external USB modem. Every panic has "com.apple.nke.ppp" in the backtrace.
I'm using the Generic dial script for the modem.  No kernel extensions.  It has worked in 10.8.5 for more than a year, including today.
The system runs fine for hours and hours when connected to the WiFi at the library; so there are no panics with nothing connected.
Is Apple listening to this list?  Should I report this somewhere else?
Here's the entire contents of the latest Kernel_2014-09-01-122352_mBook.panic file
Another com.apple.nke.ppp ...

  • OS X Mavericks crashes on MacBook Pro

    Hi!
I have just insalled OS X Mavericks to my MacBook Pro 2012 and it keep crashing (gray screen appears and mac reboots) after few minutes of work. It works in Safe mode though.
I checked disk for errors, nothing were found. I tried to reset SMC and NVRAM, but it did not solve the problem.
Are there any known solutin to this problem?

    Here is a panic log:

I'm trying to reinstall Mavericks on used Macbook Pro. When I log in to my Apple ID, it says it was not the same ID used to purchase Mountain Lion. I need to change user/admin as a lot of the folders and apps are in Chinese!

The first thing you should do with a second-hand computer is to erase the internal drive and install a clean copy of OS X. How you do that depends on the model. Look it up on this page to see what version was originally installed.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.4 or 10.5, you need a boxed and shrink-wrapped retail Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6) installation disc, which you can get from the Apple Store or a reputable reseller — not from eBay or anything of the kind. If the machine has less than 1 GB of memory, you'll need to add more in order to install 10.6. I suggest you install as much memory as it can take, according to the technical specifications.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.6, you need the installation media that came with it: gray installation discs, or a USB flash drive for some MacBook Air models. If you don't have the media, order replacements from Apple. A retail disc, or the gray discs from another model, will not work.
To boot from an optical disc or a flash drive, insert it, then reboot and hold down the C key at the startup chime. Release the key when you see the gray Apple logo on the screen.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.7 or later, you don't need media. It should boot into Internet Recovery mode when you hold down the key combination option-command-R at the startup chime. Release the keys when you see a spinning globe.
Once booted from the disc or in Internet Recovery, launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the internal drive — not any of the volume icons nested beneath it. In the Partition tab, select the default options: a GUID partition table with one data volume in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format. This operation will permanently remove all existing data on the drive, which is what you should do.
After partitioning, quit Disk Utility and run the OS X Installer. When the installation is done, the system will automatically reboot into the Setup Assistant, which will prompt you to transfer the data from another Mac, its backups, or from a Windows computer. If you have any data to transfer, this is usually the best time to do it.
You should then run Software Update and install all available system updates from Apple. If you want to upgrade to a major version of OS X newer than 10.6, buy it from the Mac App Store. Note that you can't keep an upgraded version that was installed by the previous owner. He or she can't legally transfer it to you, and without the Apple ID you won't be able to update it in Software Update or reinstall, if that becomes necessary. The same goes for any App Store products that the previous owner installed — you have to repurchase them.
If the previous owner "accepted" the bundled iLife applications (iPhoto, iMovie, and Garage Band) in the App Store so that he or she could update them, then they're linked to that Apple ID and you won't be able to download them without buying them. Reportedly, Apple customer service has sometimes issued redemption codes for these apps to second owners who asked.
If the previous owner didn't deauthorize the computer in the iTunes Store under his Apple ID, you wont be able toauthorize it under your ID. In that case, contact iTunes Support.

  • I just downloaded Maverick on my Macbook Pro from 2011.  When I try to open iPhoto, it says that I have an old version that doesn't work with Maverick.  None of the solutions stated on this forum work for me, because there are no options displayed.

After downloading Maverick on the MacBook Pro that I bought in 2011, I am unable to open iPhoto. The message says "You can't use this version of the application "iPhoto" with this version of OS X.  You have "iPhoto" 9.2.3"  What???  That is ridiculous.  Why doesn't Maverick download everything?  I've tried the "fixes" I found on this forum, but none of them work for me, because there is no workaround via the library.  I can't access the library.

I have an old iPhoto version and it still works with Mavericks, the version before yours, that is puzzling.

  • I want to install OS X Mavericks on my MacBook Pro which is not with guid partition table

i want to install OS X Mavericks on my MacBook Pro which had both mountain lion & windows 8.1, its not in GUID partition table format, so i couldnt install mavericks, so is there any way to change into GUID partition table format & install Mavericks  without losing Windows from my hard disk ?

Open the App Store and upgrade iPhoto to the Mavericks version.
iWork and iLife for Mac come free with every new Mac purchase. Existing users running Mavericks can update their apps for free from the Mac App Store℠. iWork and iLife for iOS are available for free from the App Store℠ for any new device running iOS 7, and are also available as free updates for existing users. GarageBand for Mac and iOS are free for all OS X Mavericks and iOS 7 users. Additional GarageBand instruments and sounds are available for a one-time in-app purchase of $4.99 for each platform.
The iWork apps are free with a new iOS device since 1 SEP 2013. They are free with a new Mac since 1 OCT 2013. They are also free with the upgrade to OS X Mavericks 10.9 if you had the previous version installed when you upgraded.

  • Since installing Mavericks on my MacBook Pro, I have many (not all) documents that cannot be opened in either Pages '09 or Pages 5.  They show on my doc lists, but are greyed out so I can't try to change extensions or anything else.  Some are PDFs.

Since installing Mavericks on my MacBook Pro, I have many documents, but not all, that cannot be opened in either Pages 5 or in Pages '09.  The names show in my document lists, but are greyed out.  They do not show any extensions, but I'm sure at seast some of them are PDFs.  As I cannot open them, I am unable to try to experiment with any solutions - I am not tech savvy, but can sometimes fix things by trial and error.  I have no issues with sharing documents as I have no other devices.  I just want to be able to open my saved documents!  Also, the documents I can open have to be persistently coaxed to open to a point that it is extremely aggravating.  I am not so happy with this recent "upgrade."  Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

You use Finder to find stuff. It is what you use to look at where your files are kept and to rename, move or trash them. If you double click on a file in Finder it finds the right software to open it for you.
To open particular files you use the right software for each type. Usually, but not always, the software that made the file.
Pages opens files ending in .pages. Also .txt, .rtf, and doc.
Pages 5 is the latest (but certainly not the greatest) version of Pages. It has trouble opening all sorts of files including the older Pages '09 files but it will still do it.
Unfortunately Apple has chosen for Pages 5 to also save its files as exactly the same file extension .pages despite it being a different format that can not be opened by the older Pages '09.
As we all know Apple is wise and great beyond belief and would not do something that on the face of it looks extraordinarily stupid and shortsighted. Therefore we know that it must be our fault and we are not holding the software right. Because we are bad users, we must be punished, by either having to use Pages 5 or jump through hoops to avoid using Pages 5.
If you have installed Pages 5 any .pages file (old or new) will be opened by Pages 5. If you then save the file, Pages 5 will change the file format. So don't open your files with Pages 5 and don't save them if you do.
To stop Pages 5 opening and resaving your old files, you need to drag it to the trash and empty it.
When it is no longer around to annoy you, you can go back to using Pages 09.
    Peter

Everything keeps freezing/crashing after Mavericks installation on MacBook Pro.
It started with Photoshop, then Safari, and now the Kinect sensor.
Mavericks is the worse thing that happened to me I have a thesis project to work on!
    What can I do?
How can I remove Mavericks and go back to Mountain Lion?
    Thanks

    Hey StephSassine,
First, I would run through these steps:
Your computer’s startup disk may not have enough free disk space. To make disk space available, you can move files to another disk and then delete files you no longer need on the startup disk:
    Increase disk space
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH10677
If that doesn't work, you may need to repair your computer’s disk in Disk Utility:
Choose Apple menu > Software Update to make sure you have the latest version of Mac OS X.
Software updates sometimes change a file’s permissions to improve security, so updating your software can solve some permissions problems.
Open Disk Utility, in the Utilities folder in Launchpad.
Select the disk you want to check.
    Click First Aid.
Click Repair Disk Permissions to test and repair permissions.
via: Disk Utility 12.x: Repair disk permissions
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH5821
If that doesn't help resolve the issue, you can revert to a previous OS X version:
OS X Mavericks: Revert to a previous OS X version

    Sincerely,

  • After installing Maverick on my macbook pro, imessage on my ipad and Iphone stopped working properly.  Is there a fix/test.

After installing Maverick on my macbook pro, imessage on my ipad and Iphone stopped working properly.
What I get is a RED exclamation and "Not Delivered".  It happens even if i resend it over and over.
I have made sure that the 3 devices all have the same settins in iMessage.
I have made sure to try doing it from the same network and from the cell provider network.
I have tried rebooting all three devices.
The only way to get it to work on my iphone and iPad is to dissable it in Mavericks on my MacBook Pro.
Is this a "feature" of the new OS?

    Hi,
On the iOS devices remove the Apple ID.
Set the device in to Airplane Mode (this breaks with the server)
Start with the iPhone to add back the Apple ID - only after you see the iPhone Number is Verified.
    The Restart the Mac Version
Accept the pops ups that state what the iPhone  is using.
    Do same on iPad.

  • Facebook games won't work after Maverick install on MacBook Pro

I just installed Maverick on my MacBook Pro, it is a mid 2009 model.  Ever since when I get on Facebook with Firefox, Chrome, or Safari, I can"t get any of the games to load.  Everything worked just fine last night before the install, but now I am at a loss as what to do to fix this problem, short of wiping the HD and starting back over in Snow Leopard.

  • HT204384 After I installed Os X Mavericks in my Macbook Pro, it stops readding the SD cards. I used diferent brands of cards and got all the updates for the Mac, but the problem wasn't solved.

    Hi!
I made the update to Os X Mavericks and my MacBook Pro 13' is having some isues; the SD slot card is not readding the cards. Sometimes, when I have a couples of hours using the lap, when I open the finder or any file, there are only the name of the files, but not images and I can open then even if I selected. Then I need to restar the lap to open them.

    Reset PRAM.
Shut it down all the way.
Holding the Cmd+Opt+P+R keys, press the power button
Listen for the "startup chime" to sound three times, and release the keys.
