Maximum number of Edge servers within a Pool for Lync 2013

I see no reference as to the maximum number of Lync Edge servers within a pool. Does it follow the same as that of the Front End, and so, no more than 12 per pool?
Also, can you have more than one edge pool within the same data center? I don't see why not, though validation is needed.
Thanks,
Christian

  • Front End servers within same Pool on different subnets

The customer is looking to have Amazon AWS host Lync 2013, and despite Lync 2013 having built in HA via Pools, Amazon wants to split the Pools across two of their availability zones (AZ ). An AZ is nothing more than a metropolitan area network, or simply
a data center located a few miles away. Essentially they want to split the Pools between their two AZs.
I know that for Lync 2013, the only stretch Pool supported is the Persistent Chat server Pool, and that Front End Pools, Edge Pools, or Mediation Pools are not supported.
Amazon states that the latency between their AZs is from 1 - 5 ms, which is well within tolerance, though they state that the AZs all have unique subnets.
I know that none of this is supported, though I am being requested as to why it isn't.
Forgetting about latency, is this not supported because all servers within a Pool must share the same IP subnet? Is this coded within Lync that only Pools within the same subnet will work? I think it is as with Lync 2010, a stretched VLAN was required for
a FE Pool to work, which implies the same subnet.
While on this, a Central site does not mirror that of an AD Site, where a Central Site is a reflection of Pools within an area. So can a Central Site span two AD sites? I believe the answer is yes when one considers that a remote branch office can also be
its own AD site. The reason for asking this question is I am attempting to see if if the Central Site might also have something to do as to why stretched Pools aren't supported.
    Thanks!

    Hi Guys,
Just saw both of your responses. I totally agree that it isn't supported, and what Amazon has been proposing is essentially adding their HA via a redundant AZ so that their infrastructure is redundant, which is their HA (I don't agree!).
What I am looking for is something a bit deeper as to why. For example, when Lync 2010 had the stretched FE Pool between two locations, it was done via a stretched VLAN, which implies that the servers on both ends must be on the same subnet.
Amazon wants to stretch all the Pools, between their data centers, so they can say that the Lync infrastructure is highly available, though at each data center, the subnets will be different, and that is what I am attempting to validate.
I know this isn't supported, though is it because the members within the pool would come from different IP subnets, and Lync 2013 is coded to expect fellow members to be within the same subnet? That essentialy is what the case of Lync 2010 FE Pools was when
they stretched them. And if you go back to Exchange 2007, stretched VLAN was back then a way to create geo-clustering also, which is no longer the way.
Frankly, I think it has to do with subnet, and I believe it has to do with how the Windows Fabric is written, and what it is expecting to see. I really think this is the case, which explains the whys as to how stretched Pools are no longer supported any
    longer. Yes?
    Thanks!

  • Maximum number of Real Servers and Server Farms in ACE30 Module

    Hi All,
    Need help for below queries.
What are the maximum number of real servers, server farms and virtual servers i can configure on ACE30 module?
Is there any documentation available on cisco site where i can check this?
Does it depend on the hardware or does it depend on the software version?
Quick response would be really appreciated.
    Regards,
    Rachit.

    Hello Rachit,
On the ACE module 30 you can have a maximum of: 16,383 rservers and 16,384 serverfarms
This is not the same exact version which you have but here you have some addtional details:
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/interfaces_modules/services_modules/ace/vA5_1_0/configuration/slb/guide/rsfarms.html#wp1014522
The ACE supports a system-wide maximum of 8192 class maps, here you have the reference about it:

  • What is best recommendstion for DNS LB for lync 2013 Edge servers

What is best recommendation for DNS LB for lync 2013 Edge servers ?. We have F5 LB for edge and want to decide if we can go with DNS base LB for Edge servers.
    Anil MCC 2011,ITIL V3,MCSA 2003,MCTS 2010, My Blog : http://messagingschool.wordpress.com

It will be better to Use Hardware Load balancing (F5).
If you choose to use DNS load balancing for a pool but still need to implement hardware load balancers for traffic such as HTTP traffic, the administration of the hardware load balancers is greatly simplified. For example, configuring the hardware load balancer
will be simpler as it will only manage the HTTP and HTTPS traffic, while all other protocols will be managed by DNS load balancing

  • Do we need License for Lync 2013 Edge server?

    Hello Team,
We are currently running Lync 2013 Standard Edition Server. We are planning to enable users for External access and planning to deploly Lync 2013 edge server.
    1. Do we need License for Lync 2013 Edge server?
    2. Any other client licenses needed?
    Please advise.

    Hi,
No you don't required any additional License in order to install Lync Edge server. the only license required at OS level i mean windows server licence in terms of Lync concern you don't require any additional License
    check this

  • Merge Lync 2013 Edge servers in same pool

    Hi guys.
    - We had Lync 2013 FE STD version.
    - We have added one more Lync 2013 FE STD and done front end pool pairing.
    - We had single Edge Pool, soo only 1 EDGE server being in 1 POOL.
We wish to add another Edge server and put previous and this new Edge server in one pool.
This is a printscreen of our current Edge Deployment.
Because we have a federation enabled with external partners who had put in their lync configuration
to trust to our public external address of current edge server: LyncEDGESIP.domain.com, we would like to avoid sending them new address and we have decided to keep that public address and make it EDGE POOL NAME where both edge servers would be inside.
Now we are little bit confused/amused what to do next.
If use LyncEDGESIP.domain.com to be FQDN of EDGE POOL with 2 two edge servers, what would we need to do with our current edge server.
    What to put for:
Access Edge Service public address on both edge servers
Web Conferencing Edge Service public address on both edge servers
A/V Edge Service public address on both edge servers.
    bostjanc

    Go with cutover migration if you can take downtime. Here is the high level summary for your reference;
Remove existing edge server from topology and publish the changes.
Create a new edge server pool in topology builder.
Make sure that access edge , web conference edge and AV edge name remains the same.
Publish the topology and run the setup on both edge servers. You need to configure external and internal IP addresses based on Lync topology.
Replicate the configuration change and run the deployment wizard.
Import the certificate and start the services.
Create additional DNS A records for load balancing externally.
    Thanks

  • Lync 2013 - Number of FE servers in paired pools

    Hi,
We have an Ent. Edition Lync 2013 pool with 4 FE servers, we would like to implement a second pool at a different location for disater recovery.
Does the DR pool which will be paired with production one need to have exactly the same number of FE servers or can it have less (i.e. 3) ?
    Thanks for your help,
    Luca

You can have 1, or 3, or whatever number, it just has to be Enterprise to match Enterprise, you can't use Standard Edition with Enterprise for example.
    Per: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj204697.aspx
"Each pool in a pair should have the capacity to serve all users from both pools in the event of a disaster."
That's not a statement on the number of servers, just the capacity to do what you need to do if you fail.  It's sort of an obvious statement that speaks to load sharing among pools.  Don't max out two pools and expect to be able to fail over to
one and run at full capacity.
In a DR situation, you may not need full capacity, so the amount of resources you'll be giving it will be based upon your own internal best practices.
Edit: And finally, yes I've done exactly what you're asking, it's fine.

  • Unable to search GAL on Lync 2013 Front End Pool through Lync 2013 client

I'm in the beginning of a 2010 to 2013 migration and I'm currently testing co-existence functionality between pools.  I've noticed that users cannot search the GAL from their Lync client after being moved to the 2013 pool.
When trying to access the internal URL https://fepool13.domain.com/abs/handler the user is prompted to login and after three failed attempts, receives "401 - Unauthorized: Access is denied due to invalid credentials.  You do not have permission
to view this directory or page using the credentials that you supplied".
Searching withing a Lync 2010 or Lync 2013 client returns no results, but there are no errors as well as nothing in the event logs or tracing folder regarding not being able to search.
The 2010 pool has been in production for a few years now and when accessing its internal ABS URL https://fepool10.domain.com/abs/handler the user is granted access after a successful login.
In the IIS logs there are slightly more detailed 401 error codes, but I’m not sure what to make of them.
The rtcab database appears to have user information and all three front end servers appear to be syncing with active directory.  I say the rtcab database appears to have user info because the AbUserEntry table is filled with User ID'd, GUID's and a
    bunch of other stuff.
The authentication on 2013 front end servers “internal lync website/abs/handler” is set to 1. Negotiate, 2. Ntlm - which is the same as the 2010 front end servers.
    Any ideas?

    Hi,
Which step did you do among migration from Lync Server 2010 to Lync Server 2013?
Did you already move CMS from Lync Server 2010 to Lync Server 2013?
Please create a new Lync account on Lync Server 2013 pool and test the issue again.
Please check if User Replication has completed with the help of the link below:

    Hi!
We recently moved all our users from our 2010 ent pool to our new 2013 ent pool.
    we have read the http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj688013%28OCS.15%29.aspx
In step 7, it says that we should run the deployment wizard. Do we have to do this on all servers in the pool?

    Hi,
yes you should run it on all front-End servers in the pool

    Hi,
Please check if CMS replication update to the latest status with the following cmdlet:
Get-CsManagementStoreReplicationStatus. If the status not to the latest status, you can invoke by the following cmdlet:
    Invoke-CsManagementStoreReplication
Also, you can temporary use Windows PowerShell cmdlets to move users from one pool to another.
More details you can refer to the part of “To move users from one pool to another using Windows PowerShell cmdlets” below:

  • Maximum number of PXE servers for WDS/MDT

We have an imaging environment based on Windows Server 2012 R2 using WDS with MDT.
For optimal speeds, each imaging station has a server dedicated to it, with its own Multicast address space.
Due to the success and speed accomplished with 10 stations being served by 10 servers, we wanted to scale to 18 stations (so let's call it an even 20, as that was I was building for).
We utilize the registry change to
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\WDSServer\Providers\WDSPXE\Providers\BINLSVC]
    "AllowServerSelection"=dword:00000001
as to allow us to choose which PXE server to boot to (as detailed here: http://www.stephan-schwarz.net/?p=58 )
However, we have run into a problem- the menu to select a server caps out at 17 servers for older environments (Legacy BIOS) and 16 for UEFI. This was confirmed both within a BIOS and UEFI VMWare environment, as well as our primary deployment device (17
for Legacy, 16 for UEFI). The devices are to be UEFI Secure Boot, so the cap for us is 16.
Is there anywhere I can turn to increase this limit? I'm not going to be surprised if the answer is no.
However, has anyone made a PXE loading page allowing a user to choose a particular server? I had built in the past such a menu using TFTP and Ghost, and I see this article on doing something similar for WDS, but I don't know if it can just point at any other
    PXE servers.
    Thanks for your time.

Actually, with each WDS server with it's own Multicast IP range, we have seen great speeds from each server to each grouping of 30-ish machines, though of course "it could always be better!"
As such, with 16 servers we can move 500+ machines an hour/hour-and-a-half. In fact, it's the drop to Unicast SMB that MDT does after the WIM transfer that slows down the process (as noted here as well as our own testing http://social.technet.microsoft.com/forums/windowsserver/en-US/73e398b5-75ab-4787-b230-6254de107084/wds-multicast-falls-back-to-unicast-after-copying-files-stage)
We'll continue tweaking the technology and attempting to implement some segmentation via subnets/VLANs so we can have more capacity. Someday, I'll have to put it all together in a blog post.

  • Maximum number of files supported in a folder for FileTable feature

    Hi,
I have implemented a solution using SQL 2012 FileTable with an expected workload of 150K files a year. File's size is not that big, just a few KB EDI file but I am wondering what is supported/recommended limit of number of files in a folder for FileTable?

The theoretical limit is the NTFS volume limit. This is provided in the below article.

However the practical limit depends on your application and business scenario. You can read about FILESTREAM and FileTable internals and about performance considerations from the below excellent article

  • Maximum number of connection profiles and group policies for Cisco ASA

    Hi,
We have a Cisco ASA 5520 running 8.0(2) that we use only for Remote Access VPN.
Does anyone know how many connection profiles and group policies that are supported on the box? I have not been able to find this in the manual.
Thanks in advance for your help!
    Best regards,
    Harry

There is no limit for connection profiles or group policies that can be configured on ASA. However the numbers do depend upon the memory available in the device as the profiles are stored in memory during execution.
