Mb air mid 2011 closed - display damage by heat?

Hi all !
I am using a Macbook Air mid 2011 connected with an external monitor.
While working with the external monitor, the the macbook stays closed.
I am a bit affraid of display damage caused by heat when the display is closed.
Do I need to worry about that when I am using Final Cut Pro or another "processor intensive" application?
best regards,
Argonoxos

I used to have the same problem, but found it was a problem with the router (crappy isp provided router), it couldn't handle large MTUs with VPN and just dropped the WiFi for some reason, i got a cheap simple netgear router instead and it solved the problem.
Before i got a new router i found i could mitigate the problem by reducing the MTU (maximum transmission unit) on the VPN clients end, although this reduced performance. However i was using openVPN with a third party client "Viscosity" because OS X doesn't have built in openVPN support. I noticed there isn't an MTU setting in the network pref pane for PPTP and L2TP which i'm guessing your school will use for compatibility. You might be able to do it from the command line but it's probably easier to just pick a third party client like Viscocity.
Alternatively if you have ssh access you could use "sshuttle" which works like a VPN but better because it's not sending TCP packets over TCP packets... it's a bit new, but i'll explain briefley if it's applicable. It's easy to set up (nothing to install server side).

  • Usb pin bend in macbook air(mid 2011,bought in april 2012) demands a complete replacement of the logic board which costs around $500.Is it justified?

I had recently purchased a macbook air mid 2011 in india (surat) and to my surprise two out of four pins of the usb slot on the right side got bent while trying to insert a usb pendrive.I was shocked when the store said that it was a physical damage and it will not be considered in the warranty(apple care protection plan) and i would have to pay around $500 to replace the logic board with the new one since the usb port was directly mounted on it.
I have been using the usb port since the time it had came to market and i know how to plug in a usb drive. There is no case of inserting the usb pendrive inverted as the structure of the usb port itself explains it.
I have already read the discussions on such an issue and many people have got the logic board repaired by the company.
But i will be thankful to the person who has gone through the same situation and put forward his experience about how to get a "fast response repair from apple"  in response to this discussion.

Applecare was no help at all. I called and did the complaint. They confirmed that it is registered to me and everything but essetially told me that they cant give me answers as to what is taking so long. They knew a repair was in progress but wanted to set me up with an appointment at an apple store? (the nearest Apple retail store is Billings which is 240 miles away, or about 4 hours). i tell them its at the repair place and they go on to tell me they can send me a box to mail it in and have it reapir by them.. They are trying to shift the blame to the AASP and his rep. But he said he has been trying with very few answers from Apple as well

  • MacBook Air (Mid 2011) doesn't charge

I have a MacBook Air (Mid 2011) and it won't charge the battery when I plug it to the wall adapter.
No matter what i do the light on the L shaped connector magsafe doesnt light up.
After a few tries, a few minutes, or even a few hours it just works..and I don't know why, or what to do to make it work all the time.
I tried resetting the SMC (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964), followed every step, but it doesn't help.
I dont know if the problem is in the MagSafe Power Adapter, or if it is in the MacBook Air MagSafe Connector.
Here is a video of me trying to connect it to the Power Adapter without success:
    http://youtu.be/3rRko1VncoE
Then 30 minutes later it is working again:
    http://youtu.be/j4x3YxWZzAA
This time was 30 minutes, but there sometiimes is much, much longer before I get it to work..
    What sloud i do?
My mac is still in the warranty period. If i take it to an Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP), will they change the faulty component for free?
(Where I live, in portugal, there are no official Apple Stores..so i can't go to one).

I also have a mid '11 Macbook Air and this exact same thing is happening to me with the charger. Tonight scared me because it would not start charging for a long time. Fortunately I still had battery power left.
Guess I need to go to the Apple Store
I did not have the same problem again..don't know why, but here is what I think:
The mac doesn't charge because it doesn't recognise the charger or the other way around..
Last time this happened I just let the computer connected to the charger, and the charger plugged in the wall, and left it there overnight. The next morning it was fully charged, with the green light on the connector.
After this, there was only 2/3 times that when I plugged the charger it wouldn't do anything, so I just started working normaly on the mac and after a few minutes it started to charge. That first time it took 30 minutes to start. On another ocasion it only took 2 minutes. And after that was just a few seconds. Now it is behaving normaly. When I plug it, the connector turns green after 1/2 seconds.
So, if you have this problem, try just leaving it there..while you work on it, or while you sleep. It seems eventually it will start working. In my case it "solved" the problem, as it isn't happening anymore.. (I hope forever..)
It's not really a solution..but if it works for you too, great! Good luck!

  • How do I download Windows 7 64 bit drivers for my new MacBook Air (Mid 2011) from a Windows 7 PC?

How do I download Windows 7 64 bit drivers for my new MacBook Air (Mid 2011)? I have already formated the HD and preformed a clean install of Windows 7. Perhaps I did this too early. I have read I need to install the drivers from my OS X DVD, however, OS X Lion does not come on a DVD! I've also read that I can download OS X Lion from the App Store and burn it to a DVD, however, all I have are Windows PCs which don't support the Mac App Store.
Is there no way for me to download these drivers from a Windows PC?  I know they exist.  However, you are supposed to download them through Boot Camp in OS X when you are creating a new Windows 7 installation.  I'm I stuck?

I am pretty disappointed in the lack of documentation.
This is the Apple Support page for Boot Camp:
    http://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp/
No mention anywhere of Lion, of 4.0/4.01
In the past, 10.6.6+ was suppose to - and sometimes did - provide for a download drivers from within Boot Camp Assistant program, in order to save them to flash or such (that should be about 1GB, too large for CD). Some macs req'd a USB-DVD or other driver that was needed pre-install of Winidows
You don't install Apple drivers until after Windows is installed otherwise,
It is possible for me, with a tower, to run w/o needing any drivers from Apple. But with laptops, mini, you do need some drivers from Apple for graphics, internet, wireless, SMC support.
And right now, loading any Apple support Tech Note articles is very very slow.
People keep asking why Apple can't post 3.0 or 4.0 like they do the updates. Only logic is to force t he download from inside OS X or from an OS X DVD. Otherwise would be here, and avoid all the trouble. they aren't of use on a PC, and any PC motherboard vendor does post their support software for download.

  • Macbook air mid 2011 cpu overheating with yosemite

    Hi,
after upgrading to OS X Yosemite, my MacBook air mid 2011 is constantly overheating, the CPU in particular, rapidly reaching 96-97 °C.
The CPU fan is (fortunately!) working regularly.
Did not experience such problem until yesterday morning, before upgrading to the new OS.
Activity monitor shows CPU use by "launchd" in particular.
    Thanks for any hint,
    Daniele

    Hi,
    thanks all for the replies.
I tried SMC reset following dominic23's suggestion, but that did not solve the issue.
After other attempts, I decided to go back to Mavericks, thanks to the time machine backup.
I have finished the process now and I'm writing you with the old 10.9.5 version. Everything is fine.
In my case, more than the CPU temperature and the noise, the worst part was the battery life, that dropped down to less than half an hour (I am used to almost 3 hours).
Thus, for all the MacBook Air (mid 2011) users, I strongly suggest to check on forums etc. before upgrading to Yosemite.

  • If i'll buy mountain lion will my recovery partition be able to install it instead of Lion? (on macbook air mid 2011)

i have a macbook air mid 2011 with that came with Lion. if i format my mac the recovery partition is downloading the latest version of Lion and installs it. will i be able to do the same but with mountain Lion? i like clean installions of OS and not updating old one to a new with from the OS itself.
    thanks!

You would first need to buy Mountain Lion from the Mac App Store and install it. During the initial install it may give you the option of running Disk Utility to wipe the drive it is being installed to (Not sure as I have never done it as ML is not available). If it doesn't give you that option then you would need to install if over the top of Lion and when doing so it shoild update the Recovery HD partition to work only with ML. Then using the Recovery HD WIPE the main partition and then Reinstall ML.
You could also use the downloaded ML files to create your own USB thumb drive of the install files then use that to wipe the drive and reinstall.
In any event the install routine should update the R-HD to work, download, only with ML.

  • I have mac air mid 2011 but I can't make mirror of MAC screen on TV .What to do? Pls help

I have Mac air mid 2011 But I can't make mirror screen of my Mac to TV. What to do? Pls help

AirPlay Mirroring requires a second-generation Apple TV or later, OS X 10.8 or better and is supported on the following Mac models: iMac (Mid 2011 or newer), Mac mini (Mid 2011 or newer), MacBook Air (Mid 2011 or newer), and MacBook Pro (Early 2011 or newer). You can see which Mac you have and which operating system you are using by selecting 'About this Mac' from the Apple menu in the top left corner of your Mac and selecting the 'More Info' button.

You could try booting the MBP using the OPTION+COMMAND+R keys and see if it will connect to the Apple servers.  This would allow you to install the original OSX .  I have my doubts though.
    - I've tried something crazy suggested in another thread; leaving the Macbook partially opening and shaking it, which supposedly does something to the "sudden motion sensor".
The Sudden Motion Sensor is applicable for conventional Hard Drives, not the SSD that is in a MBA.  Doing that will serve no useful purpose.
You have exhausted all reasonable options and will just have to have the MBA evaluated at the genius bar.
    Ciao.

  • Is there any way for downloading LION without recovery tool? macbook air (mid 2011) ?

I recently bought a macbook air(mid 2011) and I am using ADSL internet services which needs couple of hours to complete downloading of LION. but when I come back to see what happened few hours after download started, I found myself in Lion Recovery startiting page !
seems that I am in a endless loop !!
In addition, Its not possible to download it from app store, since it shows that the application has beed installed already. is there any suggestion ?
I guess I should first download it using speed download and then install it !

Have you tried holding the Option key down and then clicking on "Purchases" in the App Store interface? If this works, then you'll see "Install" instead of "Installed" against Lion. Download Lion then -- it will go to your Applications folder -- and do not give your password for installation to execute. You should then have the full Lion installation package in your Applications folder. With "Show Package Contents", in "Shared Support" find InstallESD.dmg. If you burn that to a blank DVD you'll have a Lion Install disc. But since you have a MacBook Air, you could use a (not less than 8 GB capacity) pen drive to store the installation without having to do the full download every time.

  • What is the best os x for a Macbook Air mid 2011?

    Hello friends,
Just looking for some suggestions and opinions
I have a Macbook Air mid 2011 2 gb ram 64 gb ssd.
It came with osx lion but i'm baffled about if i should upgrade to osx Mountain Lion, just worried about how wouild it perform and any advantages versus Osx Lion
Please let me know your opinioons and suggestions.
    Thanks all

I would not recommend upgrading because 1) You have the minimum ram to upgrade.  2) Also, look at the features.  If their are none that you feel you need, then their is really no reason to upgrade.
