MBA to VGA - Fan Problems

Hi everyone, I have a MBA 2.13 128GB SSD. When using the MBA regularly, the fans run at about 2100-2500rpms. When I connect it to my tv through a VGA cable though, the MBA fan runs continuously at 6000rpms. Does anyone have any advice as to why its doing this? Thank you very much in advance

I think it's just a matter of compensating for driving the larger monitor. Definitely puts more work on the GeForce in your MBA. I have the same issue when connecting a 24" DVI monitor on my MBA -- same model as yours. But on my MBP, no problem at all with fan speed.
It is kind of annoying because I use the MBA in my office, and even when connected to my smaller 19" monitor there, it just spins at 6000 rpm for most of the day.

  • Need tech help for MSI VGA Fan controller for gtx 780 SLI

Just curios how to get the VGA Fan controller to work on the 2nd card that's in SLI? I can get the 2 fans to run 100% with afterburner but the middle one wont on the 2nd card? Thanks!

    I have the same problem.
On GTX 780 Lightning, Afterburner will control both cards 90mm fans.  Afterburner will not control the middle fan (fan 2).
The MSI fan controller will only control one card, not both.  I think there was a major oversight here.  They either weren't thinking anyone would SLi GTX 780 Lightning when they made the fan controller or its horribly broken.  In my case Rakunvar, my bottom card (PCI-E slot 5) is controlled while the top card (PCI-E slot 2) is ignored.
I heard somewhere, they plan to fix Afterburner so it will correctly work with the 780 lightning.  It seems to me they put the MSI fan controller in the box with the GTX 780 Lightning because they must've known that the current beta Afterburner wouldn't control the middle fan.

  • Mid 2009 macbook pro battery is dead and fan is constantly ramped up (not due to heat). Would installing a new battery fix the fan problem?

Battery icon has an "x" over it and I need to have my laptop plugged in to be on. I've ordered a new battery to install, but I was wondering if it's possible that something else might be causing the fan to be on over drive constantly. I've tried resenting the SMC and the PRAM, but nothing has stopped the fans from running at higher than normal speeds.

If you've updated to Mavericks, you'll either need to use the original install DVD containing the AHT, or download the right one from Apple's servers, then replace the hidden /System/Library/CoreServices.diagnostics   folder.
I think that replacing the battery is likely to stop the fan problem anyway.

Heatsinks don't need to be changed. They need to be cleaned, which you've done.
It's not clear from your post, if your fan problems persisted after you cleaned it. If they have, sounds like the fan is failing to me.
Try one these. Got the part number from here. From your model's parts list here.
Please let us know how it works out. Good luck.

  • Qosmio G30 and vga/pcb problems

My Qosmio G30 has developed a vga/pcb problem.
Toshiba engineers tell me the vga/pcb is corrupt and needs to be replaced but since this is built-in the whole mother board must be replaced.
The cost for this is nearly half the cost of the original machine and much more than many new Toshiba notebooks.
Anyone have similar problem or experience anyone have any suggestions.
    Edited by: ADMIN

To me this clearly sounds like the problem that stroke me last weekend - obviously the NVidia GPU died and causes the trouble. Check if your machine is still under warranty - if not i would claim goodwill.
If the repair-costs are too high for you i would sell it on Ebay and get another machine as the technology level is two years (which is a century in computer-business) and you can get better performance at a lower price-point - even if it hurts to let the G30 go.

Today, I powered my laptop and see the error BIOS 902, cooling fan problem. Then the laptop shutdown. However when I tried to power the laptop at third time, It can start up normally and I can use my laptop for more than 8 hours
I found the solution in google that upgrading the BIOS. However the error 902 still there. My laptop always start up normally at third time.
What should I do? Should I bring my laptop to warranty center?

  • IMac 27" (mid 2010): Will replacing the HD cause fan problems?

    Hi,
I have an iMac 27" (mid 2010). My HD is broken, and I'd like to replace it. I've already installed an SSD, so replacing the HD shouldn't be much of a problem.
However I've read that replacing the HD causes the fan to spin up all the time. Some sites say this started one generation later, but some remain unspecific or say that this problem affects all iMacs. Before I replace my HD, I'd like to know what to expect.
So my question is: in my 2010 iMac, can I replace the HD without causing fan problems (provided I put the temp plug in the right place )?
    Best regards,
    F

OWC is mistaken. I don't know why they keep saying that. (I'm not even certain the OWC blog linked above related to using the same make drive on the late 2009s was ever correct. I had a long phone conversation with an upper level WD tech some time ago who said that the originals were special ordered by Apple.) Those drives have Apple proprietary firmware which puts the temp sensor output to the jumper block, and you cannot just replace with a drive of the same manufacturer. A non-Apple WD drive will not have that connection at the jumper block.
Two possibilities: Get an external stick-on temp sensor that will work with your model or use SSD Fan Control.
    http://exirion.net/ssdfanctrl/
If I'm mistaken and you do get it to work directly with a replacement WD drive I will be pleasantly surprised, since I have a Late 2009 which will need a new drive sooner or later. Please post back with your results.

  • Return for Fan Problem (aka mooing)?

Has anyone actually returned their Macbook for the fans coming on and off (or "mooing")? If so, did you get a moo-free MB?
The mooing isn't too bad - and I have hope that software could fix it; but if there are Macbooks that don't moo, man, I would like one. However, no point in going thru the process if there is no possibility of getting a moo-free MB.
    Thanks.

There definitely ARE some that do not moo. Or if they do, they do it much softer. Last night I had a white one that, every 10 seconds, would moo. It was horrible. Even with my TV on, I could still hear that fan revv up and then revv right back down, then 10 seconds later the process would repeat itself. I certainly couldn't live with that. I'm a student and would surely be kicked out of class with a laptop that sounded like a zoo, lol.
So anyway, I returned it today (demanding an exchange). What got me is when I explained the moo'ing to the girl, she sounded surprised and that she'd never heard of the problem before. THEN she takes it in back for about 5 or so minutes and comes back out and persists my MacBook didn't have a fan problem. I told her the machine had to be running for about 15-20 mins before it would kick in. Well she's gets my exchange and then continues to tell me "they're supposed to do that." She said hers at home did it. She also even commented about the posts on these forums about it at that point, too. I was thinking, okay then why didn't you tell me that when I explained the problem? I have a feeling the manager told her to tell me that.
Well, I got my black one home today and have been using it for about an hour before work (while it charged), and now for almost 2 hours (running down the battery). I've only been using it lightly and my temp hasn't gotten higher than 60C even on AC power. Perhaps this is why it doesn't moo? My white last night was close to 70C (on light use) and the moo wouldn't quit.
Unfortunately, this one does whine (somewhat loud on AC power, but very very soft on battery). However, that is a non-issue because turning on bluetooth shuts it up right away, or using QuietMBP works also. Whine I can deal with, but there is no work around for the moo.
So, my advice, is yes, return these moo'ing MacBooks. Like others have said, the more returns they get back for this fan issue, the faster they will (should lol) correct it. There's no need in my eyes to sell a laptop that behaves such as some of these do. I do not pay well over a thousand dollars to have to sit in a zoo-like atmosphere. And that's exactly what I told the sales woman. A lot of times I sit in quiet and this fan noise is too loud to ignore. However, I really do believe this is tied to a heat issue, because it is clear some of these run much cooler on light use than others do. That must be why I haven't heard the fan on this one - my temp is much lower than the one I had that moo'ed.

Have a look to this thread and give it a try.
Take care with temps. After unplugging the sys fan, check your temps immediately and for a long time. Make some tests to ensure this fan is not needed in your Mega.
Another solution should be adding a resistor (from 20 to 80 Ohms) to low the revs.

  • Notebook fan problem

    Hi,
I've had my laptop for 2 years now, my laptop: Compaq Presario CQ60 Notebook PC, has a fan problem. My fan stopped working when I turn on my laptop. After using my laptop for a while (when it starts to turn overheat), my fan kicks in and only works for exactly one hour, after the hour, my fan turns off. While the fan is on, it cools down my laptop. My fan won't working again until a couple hours later or when I restart my laptop and wait for it to overheat again.
Can anyone help me with this problem?

If you just bought it and it's only a few months old then it should be covered for a replacement.  You shouldn't be forced to buy a new one, HP should give you one to make it right.
I hear you, if you are busy you don't have time but don't let them swindle you.  At least give the computer to someone who does have time and tell them to do a web chat the warranty people and explain that it runs at 98 C (or over 200 F) and that it needs to be replaced and could have burned you.  Do this before the warranty period is gone.  I think new computers come with a year warranty.
I say webchat because it is easier to keep a record of who you have spoken with and what they say in case they try to weasel out of replacing it.  If they give you any trouble about it, post the log or send it to me in a message and I will tell you how to deal with them.
For several months I had to send emails back and forth and go through three years of receipts to get them to honor a warranty and I saved the logs of our chats and I know every sneaky trick they use to try and deny people service.

  • T5220 Fan problem

    Hi,
sorry if this is the wrong forum.
We have a T5220 in the office, yesterday this message appeared
    "Jan 30 12:34:06 T5220 SC Alert: [ID 118048 daemon.alert] IPMI | critical: ID = fc14 : 01/30/2009 : 12:33:06 : Fan : /FB0/FM0/F0/TACH : Lower Non-recoverable going low : reading 1600 < threshold 2400 RPM"
Could anyone shed a bit more light on this? It's obviously a fan problem but will it need to be replaced?
    Thanks,
    Paul

I would have the fan replaced. The fact that it is spinning way under speed is an issue as these very compact boxes require forced airflow.

  • Macbook fan problem?!

Hi. Just today I have had several random shutdowns. Had the Macbook for 10months now and it's been brilliant so I was a tad surprised when it started playing me up!
After a few looks on google it seems lots of people experience this problem with different reasons for it. I first thought it was the system fan as it did seem very hot but the fan hadn't kicked in. I tested the fan but I got a reading of 0rpm. SO I then ran the Hardware test and got the following error message:
    4MOT/1/40000002 :Exhaust
So, I'm deffo thinking it's a fan problem and the CPU is shutting down cos of the heat. Now, I did not buy the extended warranty but I have checked with my serial number and have until Feb 2008 on the standard 12month warranty - my next step is to contact Apple to see what they will do. Does anyone know whether I am assuming correctly and if they know what Apple may do for me?!?!
    Thanks

Would it deffo be the logic board then?
    deffo?
I have no idea if it is the logic board or not. I know that Macbooks do not have many serviceable parts. To get to that fan may be a major undertaking. Typically, they want to get the unit repaired and back to the customer as soon as possible. They will swap out what they can do the fastest and diagnose and fix the actual broken part on their own time (or just toss it in the trash). But, of couse, I am just guessing.
How long would it take to replace this?!?
    I have no idea.
Can't believe it - I love this notebook!!!
It is not as if you have many options. It will be a paperweight soon. They are machines and all machines break eventually. Either you have the misfortune to have one that isn't perfect or the good luck to have it break while the warranty is valid.

    Hi
My computer has a fan problem, sometimes fan speed up to maximum speed and the computer lockup. So I have to restart the computer. I have installed firmware updates but problem remains.
Someone have had this problem? Any solution?
    Regards

    Hi,
This issue had nothing to do with heat at all in my case. What you need to do is goto device manager, and then go under Universal Serial Bus controllers. From there you want to goto the properties of each Hub and Root Hub and uncheck "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" in the Power Management tab. Do this for all the hubs and root hubs.
I am not sure what causes this issue, but this has been a fix for us.
I made an account just to let you know! This issue took me a good week or two to narrow down.
