MBP 13' 84% battery?

I just bought my new MBP 13' and I was wondering what do I do with the battery. I booted it u and setup everything with just the battery but my battery is 84% charged. Does this mean I have a refurbished model or is this normal. This is my first time booting it and it was at 84%. And should I drain the battery or charge it to full?

The dirty little secret of Lithium batteries is that they will last much longer(they have a 3 ~5 year design life) if they are NOT subjected to frequent full discharge/charge cycles. Fact is, Lithium batteries really don't like to be discharged below 40% of capacity. High heat & frequent full discharges are the killers of these batteries. So, keep yours plugged in as much as possible, and avoid heat. Only fully discharge/recharge every couple of months, unless necessary to do otherwise.

    Thanks
    Phil

    Good morning.
I've got an early 2009 17" MBP with which i'm thrilled but in the last couple of days, the battery has begun to act strangely.
For no obvious reason I too get the *Check battery" message both in the menu bar and when I go into System Info. I've noticed the battery capacity which used to be at around 12000 mAh now hovers closer to 2000-3000, although the battery only has 145 cycles on it.
The most extreme case was this morning when I turned on my MBP. The battery read as 78% full which seemed right a I'd used it late last night. I then closed it and let it sleep for about half an hour. When I returned, the computer was turned off. I had to plug it back into the mains before it would start again. It then informed me the battery was at 0% and I once again got the "check battery" message.
I have trouble believing it could drain completely in half an hour.
Has anyone had a similar issue and if so, has anyone come across a fix?
    All help appreciated.
    Cheers.

  • MBP 15'' 2011 battery lasts only 3 hours!

    Hi
I bought MBP 2011 15 inch last week and received it on Monday.
    My configs are
    Model Name:          MacBook Pro
      Model Identifier:          MacBookPro8,2
      Processor Name:          Intel Core i7
      Processor Speed:          2.2 GHz
      Number of Processors:          1
      Total Number of Cores:          4
L2 Cache (per Core):          256 KB
      L3 Cache:          6 MB
      Memory:          4 GB
and I also upgraded to high resolution.
So far, I'm pretty much enjoying my new MBP
But I have one main concern with my new laptop's battery time.
The battry time is really really short!
When I first turned it on, it took 3 hours to drain the battery. (starting from 98% or so)
And I did calibration thing so that the battery runs more "efficiently"
Of course, I didn't expect that calibration would make the battery last longer, but no matter what,
I only get 3 hours of battery life and I'm not even doing something that would drain my battery fast.
I just do simple web surfing and word documenting on about 30-40% brightness (or even lower sometimes)
And I get only 3 hours of bettery time.
So is this because my MBP has four i7 cores or or what?
Previous MBP 15'' models seem to last at least around 5 hrs doing exactly same thing.
And considering that I have been using my MBP only for 5 days or so, I'm worried that the battery life will become even less!
    Maybe like 2 hrs?
Is this a particular issue with my laptop, that I can return and exchange to new model or get fixed without fees?
Or is it just built this way that all the MBP 2011 15'' models have this kind of short battery life?

OMG turning off the Bluetooth just gave me like extra 3 hours of battey time! (6 hrs total)
I didn't even know it was turned on in the first place because I never touched it.
I guess bluetooth is on as a default setting.
Thank you so much for advice.
I feel so stupid, but please be understanding since it's actually my first MacBook.
But I'm really glad to find out that I was wasting battery with bluetooth on, and now I can get better battery time.
    Thanks once again!

  • MBP 15" New battery or not?

my 19 months old MBP 15" (bought it in Feb '07) is unable to hold a charge for more than 25/30 mins at best. Admittedly I didn't calibrate the battery for several months of its life and it spends more time at home than out and about. Well it used to, now with a charge of 30 mins max I don't bother to take the MBP with me if I know I cannot plug it somewhere.

  • MBP early 2011 battery life

I have the early 2011 release of the 17" MBP (8gig ram, 2.2ghz quad i7, 500 gig harddrive) and it seems like the battery life has just been cut inhalf. It lasts me about 3 and a half hours from just general use. Is my battery faulty? Really appriciate any feed back

That battery looks pretty good, capacity is really strong for so many charge cycles, but the voltage looks low, would expect it to be in the 11.5 to 12.5 volt range and you are showing 11.27 volts. A little low but not critical.
How have you been handling that battery with respect to discharge/charge?  While Apple has a lot of material talking about periodic deep discharge to shutdown and charge as a means of calibrating the battery, in reality that does not calibrate the battery itself.  That only serves to calibrate the charge reporting circuitry built in to Lithium-technology batteries.  In fact, the Battery University, an independent group testing batteries, has shown that repeated deep discharge behavior significantly shortens Lithium battery lifetimes.  The optimum balance of use (discharge) and line-connection seems to be around 50% discharge before charge.  Deeper reduces cycle life very fast, lower discharge makes for a very high cycle life but why buy a portable?
Anyway, just some thoughts.  Use of high intensity applications, including other operating systems, looks like it is degrading the charge time but the battery itself looks healthy.
Just keep using it, perhaps try not discharging below 50% for a while and see how it behaves for your.

  • MBP 15" Retina Battery Life Problems

    Hello all!
I recently got the highest end MBP 15" Retina and it runs AMAZINGLY fast, but the only problem I'm having with is the battery life.
For example, right now, at 100% charge, the predicted time is 4 hours and 35 minutes, but it's plummeting very quickly; I don't think I'll get more than 1 or 2 hours.
On the website, the average predicted battery life is almost 8 hours. I understand that the numbers on Apple's website may not be exact, but I feel like getting a quarter or even half of the advertised battery life suggests there is something wrong as well? o-o
I'm not doing anything intensive on my computer either; just simple web browsing and chatting on Skype.
I've searched the internet for solutions, and I've already tried resetting PRAM AND NVRAM settings, I've turned off Bluetooth, and checked off all of the Power Saver settings in Preferences.
My battery's condition is "Normal" since I recently purchased it.
I'm curious if anyone has a solution to this problem? (To give an idea of how fast the battery is draining, I started writing this post with 100% battery, and now it's at 98% several minutes later)
If anyone has any advice, it'd be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks in advanced!

Skype is one of the most resource hungry application that one may use.  It will drain the battery very quickly.  When using it, connect your MBP to the power adapter.
Read the Apple hype regarding battery run time.  The operative term is 'UP TO' not will achieve 8 hours run time.  In the 'real world' conditions, battery run time will be determined by the number and type of applications you are using.  If you are just text editing, you may very well get 8 hours from from the battery, but certainly not with Skype games or video.
    Ciao.

  • Help with my MBP (Late-2011) battery life~

    Hi All,
I just bought this MBP like 2 weeks ago & I found that the battery life is a little short.
Only lasted 3.5-4 hours. In saying that, I'm not doing anything extreme. Only browsing the web and doing some homework on Words & Excel.
If I happened to go on youtube or some video streaming site, the battery life only go as far as 2-2.5 hours.
Is this normal? I'm new to MBP & I'm loving every single bit of it.
I read the description on the website says the battery can last up to 7 hours.
I was wondering if my battery faulty or something? or is it just me?
I have turned down the brightness of the screen to about 40% and keyboard light is at about 20% (just estimate).
Turned off my bluetooth device. What else can I do to make the battery life last longer??
Any tips anyone can share with me?
    Thanks in advance !!

  • Bring my MBP in for battery replacement comes back with broken display

So I took my late 2011 15" MBP in for a warranty covered battery replacement and when I returned to pick it up they told me that the display does not work. Never had an issue with the display and worked fine when I brought in an opened it up for them to inspect it cosmetically. They tell me it will be 500 dollars to repair this and theres nothing I can do about it. They offered to let me pay for half of the repair. But still, does this not seem right? You dont drive your car in for an oil change and come back to find 4 flat tires you are $500 on the hook for.

May be some sort of electronic short also took out the display along with the battery, if there was obvious physical damage they would have caught it at the get go.
If you don't have AppleCare, a 3 year old machine facing high repair costs, I would suggest you don't spend another dime on it and either buy a new one or a cheaper Windows laptop if your rough on hardware.
My Early 2011 is still like brand new, because I'm very careful with it.

  • Mbp late 2011 battery indicator light question

The mbp will not boot or turn on.
Without being connected to a power source, none of the battery indicator lights come on when I push the little battery indicator light button.
Once I plug in the power cord and push the little battery indicator light button, the very left battery indicator light flashes on and off green.
    What does this mean?
I have detached the battery and re-attached the battery adapter to no avail. (Using the following instructions: http://www.spathi.net/tech-support/macbook-pro-wont-turn-on-charge-light-blinkin g-orange/)

  • Second day with MBP and %85 Battery Health

    Hey guys ,
I ve just open my new MBP 2.66 and i used it for just nearly 2 days.
    When i see the battery statics , they re like;
    19weeks
    2 cycles
    battery health : 85%
It is like a joke! Just 2 days and 2 cycles how could it be possible that i ve 85% battery health on my MBP?
I think that book was made 19weeks ago , but i guess it doesnt have to affect the health of my battery , right ?
I feel so terrible atm , please somebody tell me that its normal and all MBPs are same at the beggining:)
What if it is a problem from factory , i ve apple care product on my MBP , Does it include the replacement of battery?
    thanks .

The battery needs several weeks of use for the battery's reported health to stabilize — it's not being reported accurately before calibration. Even after weeks of use it's likely to fluctuate up and down by several percentage points from day to day and week to week. Now that you've had it for more than a month, you can't return it, and your battery probably won't be considered defective unless and until it shows less than 80% health steadily for a couple of weeks or longer. As long as it's above 80%, you will probably be told it's within specs. So there is *no use at all in obsessing about it* until then. Stop doing so.
Just use the computer normally for a month or two and see what happens. Don't check on the battery's health every day — that's obsessing. Check on it every two weeks. If it falls below 80% and stays there, take the machine in for battery testing at an Apple Store. No one can assure you that your battery will be found defective. And as I wrote above, it probably won't even be tested if its health is above 80% when you take it in.
Yes, the 19 weeks is the time since the computer's manufacture date.

  • Run MBP with out battery?

My 2008 MBP battery has started to bulge meaning its time to buy a new one, only problem is I cant afford £120 at the moment so I was wondering if its safe to run the MBP with out its battery for around a month?

Just a word of caution... Without your battery, even a very brief power interruption will cause you to lose anything you may be working on... so, unless you have your charger plugged into an uninterruptible power supply... save often !

  • New MBP 17-inch battery

So since the battery is built in on the new 17-inch MBP, does anyone know what happens when the battery is toast and doesn't work anymore, what do you do? Do you have to send it in and get it repaired or can you do it yoursef by just un-screwing screws and getting a new battery?

Hi, justono, and welcome to Apple Discussions. You take the computer to an authorized Apple service provider and pay them to replace the battery for you. The announced price is $179. The battery is not a user-serviceable part, so a) end users probbly won't be able to buy replacement batteries to install, and b) trying to change the battery yourself would likely void your warranty coverage in some measure, if you did it while the machine was under warranty.

  • MBP draining the battery very fast.

My MBP 2011 is running out of battery very fast. I tried turning the Wireless off but still the same issue. This has been happening only for a few days now. Any thoughts why??

Many users see Apple's "up to 7 hours" claim and figure they should be getting 7 hours no matter what. Nothing could be farther from the truth. How long your machine runs on a full charge depends very heavily on what applications are in use, what web sites are being browsed, and what settings are in effect on the machine. To get 7 hours, you must have all energy-saving settings optimized and be doing almost nothing.
To maximize battery life in actual, real-life usage:
If you have a 15" or 17" MBP, use gfxCardStatus to restrict your machine to using its integrated graphics instead of the discrete GPU.
Keep your screen backlight turned down as far as you can stand.
    Turn off keyboard backlighting.
Disconnect external drives, iPods, iPads, iPhones and all other bus-powered peripherals when running on battery power.
Turn off Bluetooth and wifi whenever you aren't using them.
Avoid web sites that have any Flash content, including advertisements.
Avoid streaming any video from the web.
Don't play any 3D games -- not even those that will run on integrated graphics.
Quit all applications that aren't in active use.
Close all web browser windows and tabs that aren't in active use.
If you take all these steps, your battery will probably last around six hours. Of course you'll be quite limited in what you can do, but that's what it takes to maximize battery life.

  • MBP restarting on battery

Hi since a few days ago (Before it had occur sometimes, but since the last week is frequently)
when I'm on battery power and it has charge, the MBP shut down suddenly, and after that shutdown when I try to startup it starts but after or on the apple logo it shut downs again and so on many times until it restarts or I have to connect it to the power
    thanks for your help

Your battery is failing, and you need to buy a new one. Normal lifespan of a 'typical' lithium-based battery like the one in your MBP is 400-500 cycles. Your battery has had a very long life (exceptionally long, in fact!), but now, it's time to buy a replacement.

  • MBP Runs Hot, Battery Life is Dismal

    Hi,
Ever since I updated the OS X from 10.6 to 10.7 (I am on 10.7.1 now), my MBP is running very hot once in a while (usually about hourly) with no apparent reason. The processor is used up to 100%, the fans work at maximum speed and I cannot keep the computer on my lap as it burns my legs. The battery life is dismal compared to what it used to be. For example, right now it shows 75% full but the estimated remaining time is only 1h30mins.
The Activity Monitor shows the following processes chocking up the processor: mds, kernel_task and four separate instances of mdworker. I also noticed that these use up the processor when the Time Capsule volume is mounted but Time Machine does not necessarily do an active backup at that time. (Before, on 10.6, the TC drive unmounted immediately after a backup was completed. In 10.7 this may or may not be the case, the drive may unmount way later after a backup is completed.)
What did Apple do to Lion? On Snow Leopard, my MBP's battery life was 5-6 hours. Now, if I reach 3 hours, I consider myself lucky. What is going on, and is there a fix to this issue?
    Thank you.

    Michael9009 wrote:
But none of these things were happening before in Snow Leopard. The problems have begun in Lion. My battery life has decreased by at least 3 hours, on average, in Lion versus what it was in Snow Leopard. It seems Apple has screwed up seriously this time.
This does seem to be a new problem in Lion. Just because it happens to me and you doesn't mean anyone else is necessarily affected. I am a developer and doing all sorts of strange things to my machine. Perhaps you have some different issue that is causing the problem.
I am afraid I cannot erase the Time Capsule. All my important historic backups are there.
Time Machine is a backup program. It isn't an archive program. If you wish to have a historical archive, Time Machine isn't the best place.
Also, that is a worst-case solution. You can let the rebuilt happen and/or repair both your Time Machine and startup volumes. All paths start at the end of an ethernet cable.
