MBP shutsdown, 80% batt life. Will not restart unless plugged in.

My 13" MBP shuts down without warning. Battery is good charge remaining 4615 mAh, full charge at 5317 mAh.
Once laptop shuts down it will not restart unless plugged into charger. Once restarted it can be removed from charger and operated normally for some time.

MacBook 2009 symptoms:
MacBook switches off with no warning when the power adapter was removed.
MacBook switches off with no warning when booting up with power adapter removed.
After dealing with the problem for almost two years and searching the internet from time to time for several days I still found no solution.
Tried resetting SMC, PRAM, and many things more…
coconutBattery showed my battery in good health, now running fine for about an hour without shutting down, no power adapter connected.
Load Cycles: 84 (I almost never used the MacBook without power adapter and thought it could be the reason for the shutdowns, I never calibrated the battery)
Battery Status : Good
My solution found by accident today fiddling around with the Energy Saver Preferences Pane/Battery settings. I don't know, if all the changes I made are necessary, or just one changed setting. What I did:
1. Set Computer sleep to "Never"
2. Set Display sleep to "Never" (ignoring the warning for shorter display life)
3. Unchecked "Put hard disk to sleep when possible"
4. Unchecked "Slightly dim the display while on battery power"
Maybe someone tries all changes separately and finds the real culprit…

  • Nano will not work unless plugged in

    Hello.
I have searched through the help section and through the forums, but I can not seem to crack this problem.
My inlaws told me there iPod nano would not work anymore. They simply told me that they could not get it to come on. I thought I could fix it rather easy. Turns out that it isn't that easy.
The nano will only work when I have it plugged up. It says it is fully charged. When I unplug the nano, the screen dims out for a second and then goes to gray as if it were off. I can not get it to come back on however. When it is plugged in, I can navigate through the nano as if there are no problems. As soon as it is unplugged however it acts dead.
Any suggestions? I've tried resetting. Doesn't work unless plugged in...and didn't solve the problem. I've done the five r's. No problems with the hold button...
I am lost on this one guys.

I would say that it's a dud battery.
You can arrange online service here.
    Service request.
Or if an Apple store is near you, take it there and have them check your iPod.

  • Powerbook will not run unless plugged in

my powerbook g4 12" will only run off of the power adaptor. the battery seems okay. it reads as charged. and coconut battery shows a full charge (albeit with reduced capacity after 100+ cycles.) however it will not start up from the battery. and if it is running, and i unplug it at the unit, the computer dies instantly.
upon plugging it back in, it will start up fine. but my date and time settings are erased. and it runs fine on the power adaptor. but suddenly, this power issue happened, and it's like the battery is not even there.
so i bought a new aftermarket battery. everything seemed to go as normal. while doing the initial charge, the plug light on power adaptor glowed yellow. when i woke up the next morning, it was green. and after startup, the battery read as fully charged.
and then when i unplugged the power adaptor, bang! dead!
so, no change with a new battery.
the power does seem to make it to the battery, since the new battery did charge. but the unit will not operate off of a battery. even for 1 second.
i've done the pmu resets, and cussed some. neither helped.
    help!

    Welcome to the Apple discussions.
The reason the date resets to ancient times is due to all power being removed from the system. The 12" Powerbook doesn't have a battery to retain those settings like the 15" and 17" Powerbooks.
There are only 4 components in the electrical circuit: Power adapter, DC-in card, battery, and logic board. From the sounds of it, your power adapter is working, the DC-in card seems also to be working since power gets to the system to run it and the battery seems to charge, the battery, especially with a new one, we'd assume is good, and that, unfortunately, leaves the logic board. There isn't a test to see what might not be working in the power circuit, so you have to eliminate things to hone in on the issue.
You can't repair a logic board, so if you need your system to run on the battery, you'll need to replace the logic board. You can take it to an Apple store, and if the case isn't bent up, they can send it to the Apple Depot, which for me was in Houston, where they'll replace just about anything needed to make it almost new, for around $350. We had a Powerbook sent off for a new logic board, and they also replaced the battery (hint, if you take it to Apple to be sent to the Apple Depot, include your oldest, even if dead, battery). If the case is banged up, they charge more since they'll replace the case. If you want the Apple store to replace the logic board in the store, that runs about double sending it to the Apple Depot. Or if you're good inside a computer, you can buy a used board and change it yourself. Took about a week to get it back from the Apple Depot, and it comes with a 90 day warranty.

  • Iphone will not charge unless plugged into a speaker dock

Hi, my iphone charged as normall over night at a friends house by plugging it into a speaker dock. Today it wont charge via a plug and wont connect to my laptop. The speaker i have at home has old hardware and is not compatible with my iphone for charging but it will connect and play music. I dont understand why my iphone 4 wont charge via usb but can still connect to a speaker dock and play music. (i have tried my cables with other iphones so i know its not the cables and i have tried re-starting and removing sim card)
Thanks for any help anyone can give,
    Jack

Charging via USB and playing music via USB are seperate functions and not mutually exclusive.
The SIM card has nothing to do with this.
Any difference when connected to the power adaptor?

  • MACBOOK I had the battery tested it is fully charged but laptop will not run unless plugged in

My macbook (early 2009) battery is not working. After I disconnect my charger from my macbook, my macbook completly shuts off. So I ordered a new battery and the same thing is happening. Accordingly, I went to batteries-plus to make sure I didn't get a defective battery. The store said there was nothing wrong with the battery so it has to be my macbook. I've reset the pram and smc and that as had no effect as well.
Can you tell me what the problem is? Or other ways to troubleshoot?

One of the items which could have failed, is the 'magsafe board' where the
circuit is inside the MacBook, adapter attaches outside. This is similar to
a dc-in board, however can be tedium and difficult to repair if unskilled.
Not sure about troubleshooting this issue; a few topics on the subject have
been posted online and also in these ASC discussions; & are searchable.
At times, a google search may bring up more; while if you can find them,
the Support articles can be helpful if they go into a actual troubleshooting.
Some do not offer a level of technical help required, and a service tech
often would have the correct diagnostic tools to be able to test this issue.
The magsafe board replacement involves a take-apart process and there
    are several parts that can be difficult to put back where they came from;
so if you go there, read up on how others did it. An easier said than done
if one has no experience with completing multiple step tiny tasks.
You could look into the repair guides at iFixit.com MacBook section
for some ideas; several DIY processes are shown in pictures.
Not sure about batteries plus. For their factor, you could get a fairly
nice third-party one from OWC with higher specs. Do they allow a
return if the product did not solve the issue? (seldom is expected)
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • IPod will not work unless plugged into USB iPod 4th Generation

I have just bought my first iPod and I cannot get it to work unless it is plugged into the computer. The battery says that it's charged but as soon as I unplug it from the computer I can't get it to turn on. Has anyone else had this problem. I am using plugs that I got when I purchased the iPod.

I had a similar issue. When I got my 16GB 4th Gen Nano, unless it was plugged into the USB port of my Mac, it would continually reboot. I might be able to get 2-3 clicks in while navigating the menua, but it would always reboot. If it was plugged in, worked great. I returned it and the new seems to be fine (other than Coverflow issues).

  • MBP 17" will not restart after updating Java... why?

MBP 17" will not restart after updating Java...why?
It would actually try to restart for about 10-15 seconds but would quit and then shut down. Tried using P_R_Command_Options but that too failed and again it just shut down. Tried using D at startup which ran a test of the hard drive. No issues there which tells me there's a software problem.
    Can any one help?

    Disk Utility suggest reformating
Reformatting is not a Recovery Aid. When Disk Utility suggests reformatting, it is because it considers your drive unsalvageable. Yes, you lose all the data on the drive when you reformat.
And yes, Mac OS X Extended, journaled is the method you will need for a Mac OS X Boot drive.
You should also consider buying a replacement drive to have on hand the next time this internal drive gives you the slightest bit of trouble. Possibly an external enclosure to put it in as well. and it would not hurt to go ahead and Install Mac OS X on it and try booting from it, to make sure it is ready.
And make sure your Backups are current, as the next time that internal drive screws up you may get no warning whatsoever.

  • MacBook Pro Will Not Restart & Other Issues

Ever since "upgrading" (I use that term loosely) to Lion, I have seen a slew of issues on my MacBook Pro. Now I recognize that my hardware may be outdated (I have a late 2007 MacBook Pro), but that should not mean that I should be encountering all of these issues.
First of all, I work in the Web Development and IT field, so please, throw all the technical jargon you can at me. I'm well versed. Also, I have already run a hardware diagnostic, I have NO issues whatsoever.
    1. My MBP will not restart MOST of the time. I get the spinning grayscale wheel on a gray background most of the time when I go to shut down. It has sat there for up to 3 hours before I have to force it to shut down via the power key. What gives?
    2. I have never seen such terrible performance of my MBP since Lion. Before finally getting a usable desktop, it takes about 10 minutes from startup.
    3. This is by far my strangest issue. I'm a Chrome user, but for nearly any program, it will not let me scroll until the content is fully loaded. It just sits there loading and I can't scroll at all. This happens probably 15% of the time a page loads, but this is a big deal.
My MBP is a Core 2 Duo 2.2GHz, 4GB RAM and a 500GB 7200RPM HDD running Lion 10.7.2. I know it's not a speed demon, but seriously, this behavior is unacceptable. Going to roll back to Snow Leopard unless any of you have some insight.

  • MacBook Pro (snow leopard) 2006 will not restart. Getting blank screen with folder (?)

MacBook Pro (snow leopard) 2006 has begun to turn off attached Cinema Display over the last two days. Comes back on on restart. This morning, the MacBook screen also went blank white on restart. Tried to use Snow Leopard CD to restart but it was ejected and folder with ? is only thing that displays. Will not restart. Have replaced hard drive 6 months ago. Help! What's wrong? I need this computer for work.

    1. replace my current internal HD and convert it to external HD for use as secondary boot drive,
No.  That has no advantage for you.
leave the internal HD alone and purchase an external HD that I can clone and use as boot drive in case of emergency?
Yes.  I use Carbon Copy Cloner to make a boot drive and as a backup (in addition to Time Machine).  CCC allows one to make incremental changes as well as creating a copy of the recovery partition.  This means that if run on a proper schedule, you data will; be well protected and the MBP can be in operation very quickly if the internal HDD should fail.
A clone should be a 2.5", 9 mm thick SATA HDD so that it will fit inside the MBP.  It can be powered from the USB port thus not requiring an AC outlet.  In my collection of HDDs, I favor HGST and Seagate products.  I principally use OWC enclosures that allow for USB, Firewire and eSATA connections.  These are expensive but one can use a more modest one as well of one can tolerate longer data transfer times.
Here is a link showing some available SATA HDDs that will complement your MBP:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/hard-drives/2.5-Notebook/
You can look for enclosures on the same web site.
    Ciao.

  • TS3274 ipad stopped working and shutdown will not restart

Ipad stopped working and shutdown will not restart.  I synced and updated system software about an hour before problem started.  The Ipad had about 60% battery life remaining when it went dark.

Have you tried a reset ? Press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds, after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

We are upgrading from 4.7 to NW 7.0 (SP#5)
SAP will not restart during the phase MAIN_NEWBAS/STARTSAP_NBAS

Thanks Rene, I have updated the ticket with the required information. In the mean time I am interested if anyone else had had a similar problem during an upgrade. We did have an initial error with the crtsidusr command ( setting CLASSICUSERCONCEPT + removing some of the SPCAUT) seemed to fix that. At this point the upgrade failed and we had to manually APYSAPKRN, the log shoewed it wanted the NON UC which was odd as we are including the UC in the upgrade.

  • I updated my MacBook Air and now it will not restart. It just sits on apple with spinning circle. Any suggetions on how to reboot and get to start window?

It was in process of updating and when the mac restarted it just sits there with spinning circle. I have waited for hours to no avail. Does anyone have a suggestion on how to resolve?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
Holding down the power button for more than 10 Seconds will force quit your Mac. This might leave it in a state where it will not restart at all.
I would wait at least a minute before restarting after forced shutdown.
The update may restart or resume.
The reason your update failed may be a bad or failing SSD.

Mac mini shut down on its own. Could not restart, chime, grey screen and spinning wheel. Unplugged everything but monitor, still only chime, grey screen and spinning wheel. Started in safe boot, shut Down, will not restart.
This happened a couple of months ago, unplugged everything and it restarted, now that won't work.

    Hi BDAqua,
I just did the repair as you suggested. T ran the disc repair, and twice it cam back, the volume macintosh seems ti be okay, I also ran the verify and permissions repair, both came back okay.
I was actually hoping that they would find something, so they could repair. I shut the computer down, and restated with out holding a key, and I started up great. I'm baffled.  I have moved 20 GB to an external hard drive, as I only had 10% open space.
I have Tech Tool 6, would you recommend to run a repair check on that, or just leave well enough alone.
I agree with you on the new Mac's, I have problems with no disc for back up, until they realize their mistake I will stay with Snow a Leopard. This is the first problem I have experienced, so I can't complain. Their last programs are not as perfected as under Steve, prior to his handling over the reins, hope this is not going to be the future we can expect from Apple.
I will wait to here back as to your suggestion regarding the Tech Tool check
    Thanks for all your help.
    Gratefully,
    Cheri
