MBP Very Slow & No Keyboard Backlighting Option

Problem description:
MBP very slow on start up and generally post yosemite upgrade; also, no keyboard backlighting option in System Preferences and f5, f6 keys have stopped functioning.  All post Yosemite.  I have tried resetting SMC and NVRAM with no result.  Not sure what else to do? If anyone has a solution, please share.  Thanks!

  • My MBP 13" Mid 2010 Keyboard Backlight Stopped Working?

    Hello,
My MacBook Pro Keyboad Backlight suddently disapeared but the when i press F5 and F6 buttons, it indicated increase and decrease light controller levels but no lights on keyboards. I have tried SMC, PRAM resets, moving with the laptop in a very dark room and even installed LabTick but no change. When i cover the light sesnser near isight, the screen deem and brighten without any problem. Not spill on the Keyboad. When i upgraded to OSX Mountain Lion. I even installed the old osx back but could not and runned full updates but could not solve anything. What could be wrong.
See Below Keyboard setting while using the current OS X Mountain Lion version 10.8.4. P'se, advise men on what to do because i use my computer with a lot of care.

Based on what you have done, a trip to an Apple Store or AASP is the best option.
    Ciao.

  • Late 2007 15" MBP Very slow after upgrading to Mavericks

    Hi guys,
this is my first post here. I look forward to learn and help others.
The reason of this post is, as outlined in the title, slow paerformance of my computer after upgrading to Mavericks. It was kinda slow from before but this time it's almost unbearable to use it. I used to be able to run VMWare with 2 XP and 1 windows server machines WITH JUST 2 GB OF RAM! Now I have 4 GB and can barely run a single virtual machine with XP and the cooling fans come on just by watching a video on youtube, which also makes performance take a dump.

I understand it says my RAM is way too low, but hve no idea what's killing it. So far I've disabled and uninstalled all DynDNS items. I just read about Chrome's slow performance for MBP's and plan to switch back to Safari (Firefox made my computer even slower).
Thanks in advance for any light shed on this.
    Oscar.

Thank you Kappy, while I was reviewing the log from EtreCheck I noticed the 3rd party preference panes, launchers and daemos. I deleted a few of them and it really helped with system performance. I was reading about GeekBench in the discusions and decided to give it a go, although I was able to only perform the 32-bit tests, I got 1268 on the single-core score and 2187 for the multi-core score; I don't know how good or bad those numbers are. Wish I had a before and after reading but I read about it too late, when I had already erased several items.
I will appreciate any further input BEFORE I decide to reinstall the OS from scratch.

  • Mini Controlled by MBP very Slow

    Hi all,
i control my headless Mini with my MBP and sometimes although my wifi is at 7MB up/1.5MB down speeds the respond time for communication from MBP to Mini is exceptionally slow. On Screen Share on the MBP i do something or press a command on the Mini and it takes minutes to respond. Any ideas why? What to look for? Utilities i can track whats happening?
Mini is the MC815B/A model with maximum memory, 8GBs if i remember rightly....

The 2.3GHz model only came with 2GB, so yes it very well could be the lack of RAM.
see > Mac mini (Mid 2011) - Technical Specifications
Use the Activity Monitor to check for RAM usage and look for a failed process.

It can upgraded to as much as 16GB.

  • Photoshop performance very slow using keyboard move + nudge

I have a small file (24mb), that has a lot of layers. All of a sudden, moving a simple element (vector shape line layer, for example) takes 3-4 seconds to move 10px from the time of the keyboard press. This is very laggy, and frustratingly slow. New PS docs seem to be fine. My history and cache is set to tall and thin.
This feels exactly like a very old problem Photoshop had back in CS6. My last version of PS 2014 seemed fine.
I have a late 2013 Retina MacBook Pro, 16gb of ram, SSD drive with 80% free space.
    Any ideas?

Hi Chris. So no suggestions? The file is 35mb. Photoshop says it is running at 100% efficiency. Moving any element is via command + arrow keys is painfully slow. 3-5 seconds to complete before you can move again. Layer previews are turned off. Impossible to work like this.

  • Very slow USB keyboard and mouse when performing scp copy

    Hello,
As the title says, my Mac becomes very unresponsive when I copy large file via scp command. Keboard seems to read only a few letters than it "sleeps" acceptin a letter every ~2s, mouse moves "by hops" over the screen.
The scp seems to use available bandwith (~300kB/s), so seems ok. The CPU is 95% idle, so again seems OK. Disk is mostly idle.
    My system configuration:
    - Mac mini 5,1
    - Lion
    - USB keyboard + mouse (combo)
What else can I check to solve the problem? I need to use ssh/scp.
Update: Just when writing the post I got an idea to test Bluetooth keyboar+mouse. The result is that Bluetooth imput devices works without degradation, whilst at the same time the USB devices gets slow. I have tested the pendrive read/write and it is also affected by the SCP command. Any ideas why SCP over WiFi degrade USB operations? Is there any USB monitoring tool/command?
I do not want to stick with the crappy standard Bluetooth keyboard when I have a split ergonomic USB keyboard. Anyway, I was looking for a good ergonimic Bluetooth keyboard but was unsuccessful. However the exclusive, either scp either USB at a time, copy operation is also a hindrance.
    Thanks in advance!

Found the root cause of the problem - dying battery in my wireless keyboard. Why it degraded in operation under such condition, with SCP running, and not otherwise is a great mystery but a few days later it started to degrade all the time.

  • MBP very slow. OS upgrade the reason why?

My 3-4 year old MacBook Pro has gotten really slow last few days. I recently had to upgrade to Snow Leopard for a software compatibility reason. And also I recently had to upgrade my Photoshop version from CS3 to CS4. All within last week or two. Could these upgrades be the reason why it's now so slow? Is there some way to 'clean up' the computer -- maybe it's bogged down with stuff. I do keep CS3 as well as CS4 because I prefer CS3 (had to get CS4 because of new camera). Thanks.

"How can I find out what is sucking up all this space and trash it."
OmniDiskSweeper should have showed you which files are +"sucking up"+ your space.
*A few suggestions (some of which you may have already done):*
    Empty the trash!
Open up your application folder & go through all your apps. Trash all the apps you no longer want and/or use.
An easier way to do this is to open the Application folder in list view & press the Command+j keys.
In the the dialog that appears, click the "This Window Only" button & the "Calculate All Sizes" check box.
Wait a bit until your file & folder sizes have all been calculated, then click the "Size" column to sort your apps from the fattest to the most anorexic.
Get rid of all your photo files you don't want and/or need. Same goes for those pics off the websites you downloaded (gifs, jpegs, etc.).
Get rid of all your music files you no longer listen too. Especially, if you already have the actual CD/DVDs or you can later re-download from a website.
Use Spotlight to make sure you got rid of everything. You can even trash directly from Spotlight!
Drag what you don't want and/or need to the trash. Better yet, download this neat little shareware app demo called AppZapper. It basically does all the work for you by not only trashing the apps but the apps preference files, caches & all its associated files.
Another software that does the above is AppDelete. Best of all this software is free!
Burn what you want and/or need onto CDs or DVDs.
Not everyone has the luxury of purchasing an external HD and/or Mobile accounts to store their "stuff, junk, music & photos".
You can check with your ISP to see if they offer free storage space. Most if not all do now-a-days.
There are thousands if not millions of free storage facilities on the web also. Use your favorite search engine to search them out as they come in different storage sizes to fit your needs & wants.
    Check for duplicate fonts.
    Applications>Font Book
    Select “All Fonts”
If you see any “black dots” next to any fonts this mean you have duplicates and/or multiple versions of these fonts.
    To clean this up, select a “black dotted” font or the Apple + click to select multiple dotted fonts;
    Edit>Resolve>Duplicates.
What the above does is turns off the duplicates & multiple version fonts. Not delete them.
More than likely the “extras” were installed by other programs and/or other users.
    Clear out font caches
Use FontNuke. It does all the work for you. And, best of all it’s FREE.
    Printer Drivers
Get rid of all the printer drivers you don’t need & use except the ones for your current printer(s)/scanner(s).
    HD>Library>Printers Folder
If you accidently threw something out that you needed for your printer/scanner it can be easily obtained from the manufacturer’s website and/or from the CD that came w/the printer/scanner.
    Garage Band
Has about 1GB of loops stored. Get rid of some some them. You surely don’t use, like and/or need them all.
    HD>Library>Audio/Apple Loops>Apple>Apple Loops For GarageBand
Or just get rid of the Garage Band app altogether if you don’t use it.
    Get rid of extra languages
Strip your computer down to your “native” tongue.
You can do this with a FREE utility called Monolingual. Another app that apparently does all the work for you. I’ve never used it. However, a lot of users here swear by & recommend it highly.
However, there is a warning for *native English speakers*. Make sure you keep BOTH English and English (United States).

  • MBP very slow to pick up signal after waking from sleep

my MBP 2.33 takes about a minute after wake-up is complete to pick up a signal from the extreme N station (sits right next to it).....my old G3 ibook takes about 5sec....does anyone have a fix? the same problem? it is really annoying....it takes almost longer to find the signal then to restart...this is every time the MBP goes to sleep....
i have all the latest upgrades including the latest extreme firmware....i don't think it has anything to do with the airport, i get the same thing when connecting to my express stations....

  • MBP very slow, freezes constantly. Will not read install disks..

    Hey,
Running a 2.4 ghz intel core 2 duo macbook pro, it started offjust freezing randomly when doing bigger project and has now escalated to freezing when trying to empty the trash after I uninstalled a program. So, I'm looking to reformat and I still have my dvd's that came with the macbook when I bought it and it's just spitting the discs back out no matter what.
-I've restarted and held down the "C" key and nothing really different happens save for the disk just ejecting and the start up taking longer as if it's trying to get into the prompt window to let me erase and install.
    - Also checked out disk utility and it doesn't pick up the disk and will not let me format the drive from there.
    - Selected start up disk and it also doesn't see anything except the HDD and the network (I assume it shows these by default)
So I'm stumped, I need to reformat this to get it running top condition but it doesn't seem to want to happen, any suggestions? I'm outside of warranty so I really hope it's not something that has to be serviced for.

    Hello there,
Sorry about your problem. The first thing you are going to solve is the fact that you MBP is not reading the dvds. Does it read any other disks? Try inserting one and find out if it will spit it out. If it does, there is a chance that your lens is dirty. You will have to find a dvd lens cleaner, use it and clean your lens. Thereafter, you may try inserting the original disks that came with your MBP. There is a chance it will take them in.
    Good luck

  • ITunes on MBP very slow to close.

Does anyone know why it takes minutes for iTunes to close; but shuts down immediately when I double click on it.

In later generations of the PowerBook and all MacBook Pro's Apple has built-in a new feature called safe sleep. This allows two things:
1.) It allows you to swap out the battery while maintaining your work as all data present in the RAM gets written to the Hard Drive every time you close the lid of your notebook computer.
2.) In case your computer runs out of battery while in sleep mode, the data you were working on is saved on the drive and the session can be restored the next time you turn on your computer.
    Disadvantages of SafeSleep:
1.) Increased risk of Hard Drive failure as when data is being written the Sudden Motion Sensor is disabled and cannot park the head of the drive in case the computer is moved before the sleep light starts blinking.
2.) Increased time to sleep as the data must be transferred to the drive. A real pain if you have lots of memory (e.g. 4 GB)
SafeSleep can be disabled by typing the following command into terminal:
    $ sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 0
    $ sudo nvram "use-nvramrc?"=false
You may need to run these commands every time you plan to put your computer to sleep. These commands will reduce the time it takes your computer to sleep dramatically.
    Regards,
    Rahil Khandker.

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can read it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press thereturn key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press returnthree times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.
