MBP13 - first lock-ups, now not even booting anymore

hi everyone,
after last weeks itunes update (could be coincidence) i have experienced some lock-ups when using my mbp. first for only a few seconds, but they grew longer and longer to the point, where it was unusable.
now it won't even boot. i get the startup sound, then the white apple screen for 30 mins. and then the light blue screen for about 4hrs (i shut it off after that).
does anyone else have this problem? any help is appreciated.
oh, running on 10.6.1 with all the latest updates installed.
thanks
frank

thanks for the reply.
i've tried the disc repair. failed.
it couldn't repair the drive in three tries and suggested to back up my data (which i can not do) and install 10.6 from scratch.
will do this later. but ****, my last back up is a few days old.
any idea what could have caused this? drive hardware?

I clicked on iMessage on my Macbook Pro today for the first time, and now NOTES keeps opening up every 5 seconds, with a new note.  I cannot stop it from opening. If I close it or force close, it opens again in 5 seconds.  I can't get rid of it.  I have tried to clear out the iMessage settings I had put in, and I've tried to adjust the Accounts to not include notes to synch.  But, Notes will not stop.  It opens a new note, and even if you ignore it, it assumes preference every 5 seconds, and the Mac is impossible to use.

Do you have any Boot Camp or other secondary partitions set up on your system? If so then try running a disk verification routine (chkdsk, etc.) in Windows to repair the disk. While I've not heard of it happening recently, in the past errors in these partitions have resulted in stubborn ghost files appearing in OS X.

  • In Safari (7.0.1) under Maverick (10.9.2) certain loginpages are not even presented anymore. What causes this problem?

Under Maverick (10.9.2) with Safari (7.0.1) I notice that certain login pages of websites are not even presented anymore. As I cannot reach the source of those pages I also do not know which programming/websites they use for the login process. Anybody knows about these problems. As I use Little Snitch to prevent certain markting websites, geared to present information that I am not interested in, there might be a problem there, but I want to know more!

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you boot, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Help, blank screen will not even boot in safe mode!

    Model name: A505-S6960, model: PSAPOU-007007.
I know I got some error but I can't remember I turned the power off and when I powered it up again nothing!  I can't even boot it in safe mode I just get black screens.  I have NO IDEA what to do. Help

1.)try this first. remove the battery and power cable and hold the power button for at lest 30 second. plug the power cord back in and see if it starts. if not same as before but put just the battery back in and try it. if not same thing but put battery and power cord back in and try it.
2.)they havent come with a recovery disc for a few years now. there is a recovery partition on your hard drive that you are supposed to make the recovery media from when you first get it. if you didnt make these discs you will have to call toshiba at (800) 457-7777 to get a set. they will run you about $25 for shipping but the discs are free.
    hope that helps

  • Power outage caused laptop not to boot anymore

I had my hp Pavillion dv9000 connected directly to the wall without the battery inside and was watching a movie. The power outlet suddenly died and consecquently my laptop turned off. Now when I try to turn it on, the fan runs but nothing shows up on the screen; not even the hp logo or BIOS. I noticed that the hard drive access LED never lit up so I assume it wasn't just the screen that broke but something is causing the whole computer not to boot up at all. Most likely something got fried but I'm not sure what. It's a shame because I really liked that laptop and would like to repair it if possible. Does anyone have any suggestion?

    Hello NTHQ,
Sorry to hear you are having trouble with your HP notebook powering on.
I have looked for information on your system and I do have a suggestion for you that might be helpful.
You should check and see if you are getting a blink code from the caps lock and num lock keys.
Here is a link explaining the blink codes.
Can you provide your full model and product number?  Here is a link showing how to find that information.
    Let me know what happens.

  • Ipad Air not charging, now not even starting up

i have iPad air (first generation) slightly more than a year old (conveniently just out of warranty)
for the last few weeks or so, I've been having trouble charging the iPad.  sometimes it would charge normally, other times you would plug it in and it would show that it wasn't.  I tested with different power supplies, cables, and outlets, so i know they weren't the issue.  The only way i was able to get it charging again (and it was trial and error, no one way always worked reliably) was by, switching from the outlet to my computers USB port, (and then sometimes back again to the charger when that didn't work), and rebooting and then switching outlet. But it was very random.
At no point did I ever let the battery run all the way down... However, this morning it did before i realized and the iPad automatically powered down, and now I cannot get it to start without powering down again.  Whether plugged into an outlet or my USB port, I am stuck in a 'loop' - where i reboot the iPad (which used to work), it goes to the bright apple screen, then starts up to the home screen and shows 1% charge in the upper right - but doesn't indicate that its charging. Then i immediately get a message of "Low battery -  5% of battery remaining". Then the iPad automatically powers down after 30 seconds or so (or as soon as i try to do something with it). I get the screen showing the big battery with a little red, but it never charges to the point where it reboots on its own.  Then i reboot myself, and the cycle starts all over again.
I  have tried the method some have suggested elsewhere on this forum of "repeatedly rebooting" until i get a higher percentage of battery charge showing -- which hast worked so far.  But even if i did, how do i then get the thing to start charging normally?  It simply doesn't charge at all when its plugged in... ??
Is it simply a bad battery (after just a year)??   If so, does that mean they will install a new battery, or that i will have to trade in my personalized 1-year-old iPad for a 'refurbished' one??  Does this mean I will have to be without my iPad for any period of time- and that ill have to restore from backup (which could take over a day)?
Thanks for any and all help....

    thanks for the reply
i have since called apple phone support and brought it into the apple store
both ran battery diagnostics and said battery was fine:  phone support blamed a potentially faulty power port.  apple genius was convinced it was the third party USB/lightning cables i use from monoprice, which I've used for months and the two i am currently using are brand new.  he rushed me through and strongly suggested i buy an apple cable (my 2 original apple cables for this and my iPhone frayed within months and were unusable).
Strangely, it seems to be working now. Though the two monoprice power cables now only work on one side, and not if you flip it  (if i use them with my iPhone, it doesn't matter which side, so i still suspect something is funky with the port.  Its out of warranty by a couple of months, so if i have to replace it it will cost like $300 plus the time to ship it in repair it and send back (1-2 weeks).

  • Ipad 2 frozen not responding to anything locked out can not even turn off all because i down loaded iso 8 thanks apple love you to and a merry christmas to you to    anybody help please

    help

First thing to do is reset the iPad. Press and hold both the Home button and the Sleep/Wake button continuously until the Apple logo appears. Then release the button and let the device restart. You will not lose data doing this. It's like a computer reboot.
Then see what happens as the device restarts. You said you updated to iOS 8? What version of iOS 8 do you presently have on your iPad? iOS 8.1.1 is now the latest version of the iOS. Many users have reported improved performance on an iPad 2. If your iPad does not have iOS 8.1.1 I suggest you update your iPad.

  • Have you ever had your iphone 3G S lock up and not even let you turn it off to reboot it?

The screen locked up while on pandora radio then it just blacked out and powered off.  The battery was at 95% when it happened. I plugged the AC adapter in and powered it back on. It opened up to my back screen and the locked screen mode where it would not respond to touch. I took all the screen covers off and wipped it down and still no response to my touch. I then tried to reboot or power it off and neither has worked.  I got on here and gave tech support my number to call me and the 800 number came up but it would not allow me to receive the call and it didnt ring.  I guess i will just wait for the battery to drain down and power it off.  I hope that unlocks it when i power it back on.

Try resetting your iPhone by pressing the home and sleep buttons until you see the Apple logo, ignoring the slider. Takes about 5-15 secs of button holding and you won't lose any data or settings.

  • AUDIGY SE PROBLEM - WENT FROM LOSING AUDIO TO NOW NOT EVEN RECOGNIZING THE C

    Hi there,
I recently bought the Creative Soundblaster Audigy SE Soundcard and installed it. Things were going well up until today. I was listening to music and the audio from my Winamp suddenly started stuttering. I then rebooted and thought nothing of it. After the reboot, there was no sound at all and when I tried to open a song with Winamp the song would stop after like 2 or 3 seconds - I could tell this by the timer on the Winamp stopping, as there was no sound. Anyway, I was puzzled by this so I decided to uninstall the software and reinstall it. I uninstalled the software, but when I tried to re-install the software it would crash at like 80% of the install and reboot and then tell me that I had recoved from a "serious error". Sigh ... So then I had a look around my settings and noticed that it was saying that there is no soundcard detected for the software to install for. So I powered down and took the card out and replaced it in another PCI slot. Now it won't recognize the card at all, even when I change PCI slots it won't recognize the card anymore.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

Having the same problem with my Li've 24-bit. The card has been working fine for the past couple of months and today I noticed no sound. When I checked no sound device installed. I've reinstalled the drivers several times including down loading new dri'ves still no luck. any idea how to fix.

  • Created 3 partitions on new Mac Mini, deleted one, and now Bootcamp wont boot anymore! Need help please!

Here's my dilemma.  I have a new Mac Mini - a week old.  I installed Windows 7 on it using Mac's Bootcamp assistant.  I then set up and configured my Windows 7 world and everything worked fine.  No issues logging in between Lion or Win7 via the restart/option key procedure.  Well, yesterday I split my Mac HD partition one more time to create a third partition (was created as an "extra", e.g. possible future partition for another operating system).  After creating it, I then decided that I didn't really need it.  So I deleted it in Disk Utility and attempted to drag the Mac HD partition line downward so as to "fill in the gap" and reclaim the lost hardrive space.  It seemed as if I could reclaim about 1 gig or so, but I figured...oh well.
Well, the Mac HD partition seems to work just fine, but now I've noticed that I can't get into the Bootcamp partition anymore.  It wont boot.  If I try to verify the partition [doesn't even give me "repair" as an option), then it fails and gives me the following error message: "verify volume failed.  invalid request."  When I go to the Startup Disk option in my System Preferences section, it displays the bootcamp partition as a folder and not as a drive anymore.
I'm assuming that I messed up some permissions or lost some vital links during my attempted resizing/reclaiming of harddrive space.  How do I fix this without having to reload either all of my Mac info or all or my Win7 info?  I'd hate to consider the last two days of my life loading this crap up a complete loss.
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi surroundsound,
you can't put more partitions on internal HD once you install winOS with Boot Camp.
The sure fix is to delete the windows partition (with Boot Camp Assistant, not Disk Utility), then getting rid of the extra partition (with Disk Utility).
then you can re-install your win& (recreate the win. partition with Boot Camp) - don't add any partitions after.

  • Trying to change my iCloud apple ID to match my iTunes. Unlike previous question, my iCloud account does not even exist anymore, so I'm not able to sign OUT of it on my phone. I'm stuck because I can't sign in or out of it.

A while back I changed the login that I use for my account. For some reason when I got my new iPhone, iCloud decided to log me in using the older email account. Since it doesn't technically exist anymore, I can't use it to sign into my phone. But I keep getting popups on my phone every minute asking me to log in with my (now non-existant) iCloud account. I'd like to be able to sign out of that iCloud account and sign in with the same email address that I use for my iTunes account. However, I can't even log out of my iCloud account on my phone because signing out requires a password also! What to do?

    Hello florabb,
You may be able to change or reset the password on this old iCloud/Apple ID account, even if you no longer have access to the email address associated with it. Once the password is changed/updated, you should be able to log your iPhone out of the old iCloud/Apple ID account and log in to the correct new account. You may find the information and steps outlined in the following articles helpful:
If you forgot your Apple ID password - Apple Support
If you're asked for the password to your previous Apple ID when signing out of iCloud - Apple Support
Sign in with a different Apple ID on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support
    Sincerely,
    - Brenden

  • Complicated problem: Laggy Macbook Pro, now not booting

I am facing a very complicated issue with my unibody Early 2011 15" Macbook Pro (2.2 ghz core i7, 4gb 1333mhz ram, amd radeon 6750m, if you need hardware details).
I guess the issue started after my computer started to get laggy for no reason at all: it was never the GUI that lagged, but whenever I would perform some data-dependent tasks such as playing a video, or trying to open a big file. This lagging did coincide with some of my friends playing around with magnets around my computer (which may have possibly corrupted hard disk data).
After it got laggy, another major problem hit my MacBook, where I plugged in an old, broken USB into one of the ports by accident, and the computer suddenly shut it self off. The computer then seemed to have no power at all, with no response to pressing power button, or the battery indicator button. I feared the worst: that my logic board had been fried, so I immediately took my computer to the Apple Reseller. The technicians there said it was no problem at all, just that my motherboard had shut itself of in order to protect itself from a USB power shortage, and he unplugged and replugged this one small component on the logic board, which I am guessing is the Power Management Unit, and my computer miraculeously started booting.
So then, I get back home, and the laggy problem is still there. I just had to cope with the problem for a few days, until I go back to the Apple Reseller, but then suddenly, after a restart, the computer started not even booting. The grey apple icon would blink, and turn into a circle with a cross icon. Checked online, and this is apparently related to corrupted system files. This is where I began to suspect that the USB shut-off from few days ago, did more damage than the technicians thought: maybe related to the hard disk, or RAM.
But then again, it could have just been a coincidental corrupt hard disk from my actions, so I wiped/repartitioned my hard disk, and restored the OS and my files from a TIme Machine Backup. Again, the problem was still there, so I thought it might be to do with my backed up system files, so I did a fresh install of Lion.
The fresh install of Lion seemed to eliminate all lagging problems, but after I started copying my files and installing applications from Time Machine, the lagging problem gradually returned. So another question arose, was it a faulty hard disk, or a corrupt file or application that was making it laggy? To check if it was my hard disk, I did a zero-over erase of the entire disk with Disk Utility, and sure enough, the writing process failed in the middle.
After thinking I zeroed in on the problem, I replaced the hard disk in my Macbook Pro with another 750gb Toshiba SATA drive, and did a clean install of Lion. Once again, the laggy problem was gone, but just like the old hard disk, the laggy problem returned after I started copying files over and installing applications. Switching applications would take forever, and accessing folders on my hard disk would also be laggy. Playing videos was impossible, but the GUI (dock, spaces, etc) were all very responsive.
Now, I thought the problem is either with faulty RAM, or my hard disk reader is broken (since two hard disks, although the original one was faulty, both failed). I read online that the Apple Hardware Test (AHT) can help identify and pinpoint hardware problems, so I inserted the 2nd disk that came with my computer (Applications Install), and pressed D, but then nothing came up. After countless attempts, I maybe thought it was the wrong disk, so I inserted the 1st disk (OS Installer), and held D while booting, but still, AHT would not load.
After countless attempts at loading AHT, all of which led to me forcing shut down/holding power button after seeing the Apple logo, brings the problem to where I am at now: my Macbook does not boot into the login screen. After the Apple logo, and the spinner wheel have appeared, the screen turns white and the display becomes an infinite loop of switching from a gray color, to a white color.
This problem is frustrating me very much, because there are so many possible causes, and the problem persists even after reinstalling the OS, and even replacing the ard drive. The logic board shutoff could be the cause, but then again, the lagging problem started way before it happened. Somebody please tell me what is the problem, and what I should do? Thanks in advance.

Didn't know my magnets were strong enough to corrupt hard disks.
Yes, it's a method used to destroy data on a hard drive as it's recorded using magnetic fields, either "on" or "off" to represent the 1's and 0's that make up the basic building blocks of your data.
But, the magnet does not explain why the hard disk reported an error when being erased with zero-over option.
When the driver software has a problem reading the data on the drive, it assumes it's a bad sector, then maps it off and uses a spare. You likely ran out of spares.
I just tried zero-over erasing the second, good hard disk that replaced the original, but again, it fails. Is this a common problem with the zero erase option?
    No.
or is it something to do with my hard disks, or some sort of damaged hardware in my computer?
Well this is drive #2 and it's new, and you get the same problem.
It's either something your doing, (like moving the hard drive/ computer while it's operating thus the heads are striking the platters) or it's a hardware defect, or perhaps the magnets did other damage we can't see, perhaps it's magnatized the computer and that's affecting the hard drive or electronics.
May be a loose or defective cable.
It's time for a hardware evaluation at this point.

  • Adobe Reader 10.1.4 Lock-Ups

    Hello,
When our campus users launch Adobe Reader 10.1.4 after logging on to a campus machine via a network account (with a re-directed app data folder) and launch a PDF from a network location by double-clicking it from Windows Explorer, Adobe Reader will launch, but then lock up and enter a "Not Responding" state after a few seconds of working with the PDF. I can only reproduce this issue with both the Enable Protected Mode at startup and the Show me messages when I launch Reader boxes checked (if either box is unchecked, the lock-up does not occur). If I wait long enough, sometimes, the "Not Responding" state will end and I will be able to view the PDF without issues. However, after a single reboot, the problem re-occurs. Our campus machines are on the 32-bit Windows 7 OS.
I have been able to reproduce this issue in Adobe Reader 10.1.2, 10.1.3, and 10.1.4, but not in Adobe Reader 10.1.1. I am not able to reproduce this issue using a local account opening a local PDF, a local account opening a network PDF, or using a network account to open a local PDF. The issue also does not occur if the user first launches Adobe Reader, and then opens the network PDF using File->Open. In other words, the issue only occurs when a network account opens a network PDF by double-clicking on it from Windows Explorer.
I did some research in the Adobe Reader forums, and here are the workarounds that I found and my success with them:
    1) Uncheck Enable Protected Mode at startup
As I stated before, this does work around the problem, but also decreases security. As a troubleshooting step, I tried using the Adobe Reader documentation to white-list everything that Protected Mode was 'blocking'. The lock-ups still occurred even though the Protected Mode log was empty (after whitelisting) and did not indicate that anything was being blocked.
    2) Disable Enable Hardware rendering for legacy video cards
This workaround did not work for me, even after disabling the legacy video cards and switching  the preferred renderer to software.
    3) Uninstall and reinstall Adobe Reader
    This workaround was also ineffective.
    4) Uncheck Show me messages when I launch Reader
As I stated before, this does work around the problem.
But these are not fixes - just workarounds. Does anyone know what the root problem is and whether or not Adobe will be addressing this issue?
    Thank you in advance.

Hi, I can't offer any solution just agreements that it isn't just yourselves but others shared experiences:
The lockup began several years ago and subsequent versions of Reader have not altered the lockup problem one bit.
Typically the whole program loads, as does the document (it doesn't matter which PDF, any and every PDF cause lockup), you have about 4 seconds to scroll down or whatever action then... application completely freezes, states "not responding" and usually it remains entirely locked for at least 1 to 2 minutes while it hogs majority of system resources. When it releases, program again fully responds. Closing and reopening only repeats the same bad user experience.
Uninstalling, reintstalling, new versions, have no effect. Inevitably, the main result is to use PDFs significantly less as it is not worth it, yet ultimately it is unavoidable for documents.
Following your 1,2 and 4 has reduced lockup time to around 50 seconds but still not acceptable for regular use. This reduction and the fact that earlier versions on the same system platform worked 100% fine suggest to me it is additional (and for many users, entirely unecessary) Reader functionality such as trying to get messages, check updates (another to turn off), etc. that halt the software from working smoothly as it should rather than any problem with the host system.
I'd be very surprised to hear Adobe are unaware of the problem as there are many messages about this from a search and yet seemingly no definitive solution as far as I can find.
I too will recheck here in hope of a solution emerging.
