MBPr+disconected external monitor= no auto graphics switching

Hello!
I am having a problem with automatic graphics switching. Recently i updated OS X to Mavericks and noticed that my MBPr not going back to integrated GPU when I disconect my external monitor. In Activity Monitor all processes are not requiring High perf. graphics. When I click "About this mac"->"More info"->"Displays" there are my disconected external monitor. After restaring MBPr everything is normal until i connect and disconect 2nd monitor.
I am one with this problem?
P.S. Automatic graphic switching in "Settings"->"Energy saver" is on.

i have the same problem too , i expect your comments folks!!!

I've got a MacBook Pro 15' running 10.6.6. I want to use an external monitor for my graphic design work using Adobe software and thought I'd try an HD TV. I ran a Mini Display to HDMI lead to the TV but the picture quality was disappointing. I also tried a Mini Display to VGA lead and that wasn't much better. I tried all variations of resolutions in System prefs - Displays but nothing helped. Am I getting something wrong? Thanks all.

In addition to pixel density, you are up against the translation driver card in the TV.
If you read the fine print of computer-resolution-capability in the TV user guide, you will see a chart as tall as the manual page.  At the top is the smallest resolution capable, at the bottom is the full use of the 1080p in the TV.
Mac falls into the top 25% of the page, maxing out at 1366x768 often.  This is because the TV control card is expected to do too much of the work, but is not designed for computer-monitor processing.
I looked at the resolution charts on 2 TVs before deciding to buy a 1080p LCD monitor that has a TV interface/connector.  Computer monitor first, TV second.  But the thing is only 27 in.  Good thing TV is not as important to me as it is to others.

Disconnect all external hardware (Walcom tablet for instance) and run through this list and stop after #16 and come back to report and/or proceed to #17 and further if it warrants it.
Step by Step to fix your Mac
There is a madness to the order of the steps, it's designed to narrow down your issue from hardware down to something lurking in your user account folder
So far I read the Walcom tablet is causing some issues, however that might not be the primary cause.

  • T420 - external monitor uses dedicated graphics - higher temps as without it

I had my fullHD monitor plugged to VGA and it was all ok. Sinde I plugged it in displayport (via DVI-Displayport adapter) it uses dedicated graphics - nvidia taskbar icon is showing it. Chrome, Thunderbird and some other programs are now using dedicated graphics too, even if i set in Nvidia Control panel Chrome to use only integrated graphics.
Any ideas ? I think, that when all these programs are now using dedicated graphics, the temperatures are higher than before.

  • External monitor, how to switch of internal monitor

With a second, external monitor, how do I switch of or darken the internal iMac monitor? In particular together with a beamer the screen light is disturbing. (however it works seemless great with a 720p beamer!)

    Hello Joe.
System Preferences : Displays: Brightness bar is at the bottom.
This will allow you to darken the screen a bit, and is currently the only way I know that will allow you to do what you want.
For faster access you can select the "show displays in menu bar", which will allow you to access the Displays system preferences pane from the menubar at all times.

  • External Monitor MX02LE & 3D

Is there a way to keep the perspective when switching cameras with an external monitor? When I switch cameras to say front, the output on the mx02 is not the same as on the monitor, the monitor will center the image, full screen by default but the mx02 output look further away in Z. When I switch back to the Active camera, it returns to the proper framing.

HERE IS THE EASY FIX SOLUTION FOR THIS PROBLEM GUYS:
I have an 15inch MacBook Pro that I've just installed Snow Leopard 10.6.3 on.
Prior to this install, I've had it hooked up to my Samsung SyncMaster 2243 via an Apple MDP/VGA adapter and a third party VGA cable. It has been flashing on and off a black screen every now and then for the past 2 years and I googled that it was just a crappy communication between the MBP and the Samsung... but now since installing 10.6.3, the Samsung display just flashes the desktop for a second then turns black for good - occationally flashing analogue/digtal prompt display. Tried everything for hours. Nothing worked, thought I was gonna have to buy a new all Apple VGA lead then came across Michael's above solution. Tried it and it worked IMMEDIATLY!!! And the monitor doesn't flash black anymore AT ALL!! Whoo-hoo!! Thanks heaps.
    WHAT TO DO TO FIX:
Go to => System Preferences  => Energy Saver => change graphic settings to Higher Performace.
    Cheers!!

  • 10.6.7 update changed desktop image blue Automatic Graphics Switching OFF

Desktop image changes to default blue whenever you Untick Automatic graphics switching or starting cs4 or other graphics application that uses the AMD graphics or high performance graphics card. Will not change to any other image until you retick the automatic graphics switching. Could be a fault or just Apples way of saying your now using the more powerfull graphics card HOWEVER when you switch back or Tick Auto Graphics Switching it does NOT revert to the image you had.
Anyone else experiencing this since 10.6.7 update.

(Oops, time expired on editing my previous post while I had breakfast with the kids.)
Apple's OS Installer seems picky about which disks it will install onto. It seems to require a disk with an active version of the OS. I've never been able to use Apple's Installer to put OS X onto a blank external Firewire drive, for instance. I'm not sure if it will update any external FW drive, though I can't say that's for certain. I expect the same limitation may be true for attached USB2 drives. Panther installers were picky this way too.
What I'm looking for is a clear explanation of what Apple's Installer needs to see to make the red exclamation mark go away. It has a very concrete idea about what's an acceptable target drive. Unfortunately, not knowing exactly what it's looking for, I'm at a disadvantage to give it what it wants.
I'm nearly to the point of calling AppleCare. It seems a bit ridiculous that I'm having so much trouble getting the OS Installer put the original OS that came with my CD-Mini onto my CD-Mini's hard drive. But maybe there's a trick to it I just haven't tried yet.
BTW, I was using this CD-Mini almost exclusively as a media player below my plasma TV. I'd like to be able to watch some EyeTV recorded shows this week. Right now this CD-Mini is little more than a paperweight due to lack of a workable OS.
    Thanks again.

  • Macbook pro 2010 with 2 external monitors without its main display

Hi guys, I have been searching for a way to have 2 monitors without macbook's screen itself.
I'm aware of various adapters through usb and etc.
But Im thinking, if mac book is only capable of outputing 2 displays, why not outputing main display to one external monitor, instead of the screen on the computer, and the other external montior as a extra one?
Is it possible ?  so basically 2 external monitor with macbooks screen switched off.
I don't think apple tv can mirror one and add extra one   can it?
I just want 2 big monitors instead of 1 big monitor with 1 tiny screen of the laptop.

Maybe someone with a 2010 model will jump in and correct me, but as you only have a single Mini DsplayPort adapter, I don't think that it's possible to have two external models on a 2010 model. You can only do it on 2011+ via Thunderbolt using Thunderbolt Displays.
You might want to ask your question in the Apple Cinema Display forum, though. I'm just not aware that it can be done.

  • Safari 7.1 won't load large images on MacBook Air. Turning off Auto Graphics is not an option.

When I try to load a large image with Safari 7.1, I get a black box instead of an image.
Chrome and Firefox load the image just fine.
This is a known problem and others have resolved it by turning off Auto Graphics Switching.
However, my version of MacBook does not have the capability to turn off Auto Graphics Switching under the Energy Saver preferences. (I guess I have the GPU or chip or whatever that doesn't provide that option.)
    Are there any workarounds?
Here are two threads about the same problem, but the solutions don't work for me:
safari 7 won´t load large images...
Safari 7.0.1 does not load large images

    Safari > Preference > Advanced
Checkmark the box for "Show Develop menu in menu bar".
"Develop" menu will appear in the Safari menu bar
    Enable Images.
Make sure that"Disable Images" is not enabled.
    Best.

  • Do all the new MBPs support automatic graphics switching?

Hi, I read that older MacBooks required a manual switch between the integrated graphics and discrete GPU.
    I'm reading here: http://www.apple.com/macbook-pro/specs/13-and-15-inch/
"NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M with 512MB of GDDR5 memory (15-inch 2.3GHz configuration) or NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M with 1GB of GDDR5 memory (15-inch 2.6GHz configuration) and automatic graphics switching"
Does that mean "... 512 MB, or 1GB and automatics graphic switching" -> Only the 1GB configuration supports auto graphics switching, or
"...512MB or 1GB, and automatics graphics switching -> both configurations support it
Hate to sound like a grammar freak, but just wondering - never liked having to log in and out to switch.
    Thanks!

The new MBP's with the Intel 4000 and the NVIDIA cards support automatic graphics switching. You can also use gfxCardStatus, which works with 2012 Mac's an Mountain Lion to make sure that auto graphics switching is enabled.

  • Automatic Graphics Switching Problem

When using slingplayer on my 2010 17" Core i7 Macbook Pro the graphics will switch to the 330M card (as indicated by system profiler and the wonderful gfxCardStatus program).
The problem is that if I start the program while the intel card is in use the program will start and I will only have audio, no video.
BUT if I start the program with the 330M already in use by another program (Skype, Parallels, etc...) the program will start with audio AND Video, like it should. (Note: I haven't tried turning off auto graphics switching as I assume it will work)
I have no idea why and I am not expecting others to have an answer, but has anyone else had any issues like the one I mentioned?

    Hello,
I had the same problem. This is what fixed what fixed the problem.
Firstly Turn off automatic graphics switching after that restart your computer (with the cold color). When your computer is on again you will find that it would be fixed.
    Hope it helped

  • Occasional graphics errors on external monitor

Overall, I'm pretty happy with Lion. Occasionally however, I have video graphics glitches on my MacBook Pro. Sometimes it happens when using an external monitor, sometimes it also happens on the notebook display.
I often get a distorted task switcher:
Also, Safari sometimes renders the content in a weird way, with yellow and red blocks:
And finally, the translucent part of the taskbar sometimes looks funny, with stray pixels running through:
I wanted to mention that it's not a big concern, but when typing the previous version of this message, I detached the external monitor and then all I got was a black screen when opening the lid. I had to power down the MacBook.
    Anyone else seen this behaviour?

    Replying to my own question...
There's a much longer-running thread (since Nov. 30th, 2011) here, about this issue. Apparently, I'm not the only one.

  • Aero switches off when extern monitor is rotated by Nvidia ControlPanel

Aero works fully when desktop is expanded to the 2nd monitor in normal view.
    any workaround ?

sorry, I forgot to mention my hw: Satellite a100-02b ( geforce go 7600 )
.. and when I reboot Vista behaves a bit strange.
a few seconds all seems ok but then it sets back the external monitor to 16-bit colour and minimum Vfrequency ( 60 HZ )
and a message pops up that the "Desktop windows manager" has been closed due to a problem.
    Is this perhaps because..
    1) It's an old CRT, not specially known ( standard pnp-driver )?
    2) the vista capability of the graphics adapter is not sufficient in this configuration ?
I heard somewhere that there is a switch in the registry, that disables the dwm.exe's test, whether the hardware is
able to support the aero-technologies. would that be a way to fix that ?

    Hi,
    and thanks!

    > Am I right???
No I've EXPANDED the desktop to the 2nd monitor. In normal view Aero works right then on BOTH monitors.
Only when I rotate the extern monitor this problem occurs.
I think, that this special configuration is a bit unique ( but very comfortable to work on )
and therefore not foreseen ( eeh, sorry for my english ) by the programmers of the drivers or
    the dwm-team at MS.
ok, when I add the 1280*800 of the laptop screen and the 768*1024 of the CRT
I end up at 2048*1024 ( the unused area included )which is quite near to the absolute maximum of 2048*1536 the graphics adapter
supports on ONE monitor at all. Perhaps that's just too much...
on the http://support.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/TSB7101O90002R01.htm you mentioned, the limit for aero with my 128 MByte VideoRam
would be 2.304.000 pixels - but only when one monitor is in use. There's no information about multi-monitor use.
so what, Aero is not that important, but when I have some time again, I will experiment a bit...
    Ciao !

  • Graphics performance - external monitor

    Hello everybody.
    I've run into a problem..
When I add an external monitor to my rMBP 15", the graphics performance is reduced by quite a bit. Example: when I play League of Legends on my built in monitor, it runs smoothly at 60fps with almost the highest graphic settings. But when I play it on the external monitor, with the lid closed, it's going at 30fps with the lowest graphic settings.
    Here's the twist..
I bootcamped it, just to test if there'd be any difference. And surely, there was. Suddenly I could play with the highest graphic settings at 60fps on my external monitor.
    Here's my setup:
MacBook Pro Retina 15", mid 2012.
    Asus VE278Q
The monitor is connected with a HDMI cable.

I have the same hardware, a rMBP with the quad 2.6, 16 gigs of ram and the NVidia 650.  I don't have the problems you are describing but I play different games - mostly borderlands, so perhaps that makes a difference.
The first thing I would suggest is to use something other than an HDMI cable.  I can't remember the details but I recall reading that the throughput of the HDMI is limited, especially compared to thunderbolt, so I would try switching first.  Of course you are roughly quadripling the pixels you are pushing when you go from 1440x900 (native retina) to 2880x1800 .... so that could be it, and I would also try to scale the external monitor 1440x900 ... and see what happens.
Lastly, most games run a lot faster under windows than OSX.  Sad but true.  I sometimes run the same game on my server ( a proliant with a Xeon quad @ 3.3 ghz with either a decidedly low end GT630 video card.  It smokes the retina MBP, badly for whichever game I have ever tried. They look better, they run much faster.  That said, I still like to game on the Mac and only use the Server when I need a third machine when my daughter comes to kick my butt.  I personally will take the ease and elegance over the speed, since the rMBP is fast enough.
