MBPr or iMac 21.5?

Trying to figure out which base model - the macbook pro retina or imac - is faster. I know that the iMac has quad-core processing, but I also know the mbpr has apparently much-needed flash storage.
In what ways do the macbook pro and imac differ? Does anyone know exactly how they line up?

nice vid.
If you dont need a portable however, my choice would most certainly be the IMAC, which was just updated a few days ago.
My personal preference however between the Imac or the Mac Mini and a huge screen would certainly be the Mac Mini of which I have a couple.
I notice very LITTLE difference on my quadcore mac Mini vs. my standard Mac Mini except when doing some video splicing in Final Cut Pro.

  • Have songs on my hard drive already, but still has iCloud icon next to it in iTunes...

So I'm confused as to how iTunes Match should work apparently.  I have it turned on and it works fine, but all of the songs in my iTunes library (connected to airport extreme) says they are in the iCloud instead of local.  So then if I press the download button for that song, it downloads it and duplicates the song on the hard drive!  How weird!  Why wouldn't it just point to the file on my hard drive since it's already there?
Or once we turn on Match, should we go and delete our entire local library?  I'm just confused.
I also thought I could play them and it would show as downloaded by pointing to the hard drive version, but no dice.  Apparently it only streams from a Mac.
The whole reason this is an issue (besides *** backwards functionality) is I am trying to export a playlist and it only shows downloaded songs in the text file, not songs in iCloud, even though all the songs are on my hard drive!
Anyway, and ideas would be great.
    Thanks,

With iCloud, is there a need to backup music anymore?  If you lose your hard drive, can't you just download it again from iCloud?  That was my impression at least.
Read this: FAQ: Why iTunes Match Can Not Be Used as a Backup. If you care about your data you'll still keep local backups of all your personal data. Cloud storage is nice and all that but Apple doesn't market iTunes Match as a backup solution and because the matching is not 100% accurate nor does the service store Apple Lossless files, it is not a viable backup solution. For cloud backups you want a company like Backblaze or Mozy or one of the others available who are backup solutions.

Currently both MBPr and iMac have the iTunes Media folder pointed to the Drobo.  However, I did notice that some music files were downloaded locally on the MBPr, which I think are from the auto download feature.  Not sure though.
Yeah, the home sharing thing may work.  I wanted for both machines to be able to see purchases from either machine, or iPhones.  That's why I wanted them to share a library.  So if I bought a song on my laptop, I could run upstairs and see if on the iMac as well.  Maybe library sharing is the best way to do that however.
Keep in mind that any purchases made on the MBPr will be downloaded, and with automatic downloads turned on purchases from other devices will also be downloaded. Right off the top of my head I don't know if this will result in duplicate downloads, but as long as the MBPr is on the local network and iTunes has the library pointing at the Drobo it will all go into the same spot. BUT... if you make a purchase on the MBPr while away from the local network that purchase will be downloaded to the local internal HDD.
So a variation on the theme I talked about above is to, perhaps, not make any purchases on the MBPr and turn off auto-downloads for purchases and keep iTunes Match and Home Sharing enabled. This will enable you to access the music library while home and away and not keep any media on the internal HDD.

  • My Macbook Pro is possessed. Now what?

My MBP retina trackpad does not accept any user input, but the cursor is randomly jumping around and screens are switching from desktop to dashboard to mission control randomly. The best way to describe the cursor and screen switches is it looks like rapid eye movement. I tried restarting and shutting down network just to make sure no one's hacked me and controlling the computer remotely.
Should I call a priest, or just uninstall Mavericks? Both my MBPr and iMac have been pretty buggy since install. Really disappointed with Mavericks. I've never uninstalled an OS and gone back to the previous version without disks. If I have to do this, may need some advice.
Edit: The MBP accepts input from a bluetooth mouse and the cursor and screen have stopped randomly jumping around. However, the trackpad still does not accept user input.
    HappyThanksgiving!

There are several possible causes for this issue. Take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried until it's resolved. Some may not be applicable.
    1. Follow the instructions in this support article, and also this one, if applicable.
    2. Open the Bluetooth preference pane in System Preferences and check for unknown or forgotten input devices. Disconnect any USB input devices that you aren't using.
    3. Boot in safe mode and test, preferably without launching any third-party applications. If you don't have the problem in safe mode, but it comes back when you reboot as usual, stop here and post your results. If you can't boot in safe mode, do the same. If you booted in safe mode and there was no change, go on to the next step.
    4. Reset the System Management Controller.
    5. If you're using a Bluetooth trackpad, investigate potential sources of interference, including USB 3 devices.
    6. A swollen battery in a MacBook Pro or Air can impinge on the trackpad from below and cause erratic behavior. If you have trouble clicking the trackpad, this is likely the reason. The battery must be replaced without delay.
    7. Some people have reported that they fixed a malfunctioning trackpad by pressing down on all four corners at once. I can't confirm, but it does no harm to try.
    8. There's a report that a (possibly defective) Thunderbolt Ethernet adapter can cause the built-in trackpad of a MacBook to  behave erratically. If you're using such an adapter, disconnect it and test.
    9. There's also a report of erratic cursor movements caused by an external display that was connected but not turned on.
    10. If none of the above applies, or if you have another reason to think that your computer is being remotely controlled, remove it from the network by turning off Wi-Fi (or your Wi-Fi access point), disconnecting from a Bluetooth network link, and unplugging the Ethernet cable or USB modem, whichever is applicable. If the cursor movements stop at once, you should suspect an intrusion.
    11. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine and/or external trackpad tested.

  • Graphics concern with early 2013, MBP Retina 15 2.4 i7

I was having issues with my graphics glitching / stuttering (if that makes sense) when scrolling zooming. All my icons across the bottom would almost vibrate as the cursor past over them. Anyway, the good guys as Apple Genius (after id done the AHT / PRAM) replaced my machine like for like with a brand new early 2013 model (slight upgrade to 2.4).
Anyway - I also have the new IMAC - My problem is this; I use google earth. I have this installed to both my MBPR and IMAC. On my IMAC it works faultlessly, smooth and as it should. On my MBPR however it is very glitchy, the screen stutters as i zoom in and move around. It is almost as if the graphics cannot cope.
This new machine is 24hrs old, straight out of the box with OS X 10.8.3 - Does anyone have any ideas of what i can do? Surely this cannot be the way it is for a £2000 machine? I am no Apple expert and recently converted so have everythning apple. I purchased the Retina Pro as my expectations were that it would be the all singing and dancing machine - Any help, suggestions as to what i can do would be fantastic.
Surely this cannot be a faulty machine? The only common thing between this and my last machine is the time machine back up!

Just for info - incase its relevant:
My IMAC is the following model which works pefectly with google earth.
    21.5-inch: 2.9GHz
    2.9GHz quad-core Intel Core i5
    Turbo Boost up to 3.6GHz
    8GB (two 4GB) memory
    1TB hard drive1
NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M with 512MB
My Macbook is the following model - Same google earth download, but graphics are really glitchy, stuttery when zooming in or out.
    15-inch: 2.4GHz
    with Retina display
    2.4GHz quad-core Intel Core i7
    Turbo Boost up to 3.4GHz
    8GB 1600MHz memory
    256GB flash storage1
    Intel HD Graphics 4000
NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M with 1GB of GDDR5 memory
    Built-in battery (7 hours)2
dont know if any of this info is relevant but im trying to provide all the info i can!
    Hope someone can assist!

  • Should I buy a new MBPr 15 or stay on iMac 2011?

The thing  is, that I am not really sure, should I buy this machine or not, because actually I am a film-maker and currently I have an iMac (2011), and looks like I will work in the field in the future. So I am considering of buying a base MacBook Pro Retina 15, which is with i7 2.7GHz, 16GB of memory, 512 flash storage + Intel HD Graphics 4000 and NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M with 1GB of GDDR5.
And here is my iMac tech specs: i7 3.4GHz, 8GB of memory, 1TB 7200rpm hard drive + AMD Radeon HD 6970M with 1024Mb.
Also, I am going do a lot of pretty heavy video-editing (Premiere, After Effects) on the notebook, because I am going to sell my iMac. Well, if buying the Macbook makes sense.
So the question is, will it make a big difference in speed of rendrering, overall quality of work progress, and editing itself. Also, I am interested in Photoshop, if you, guys, worked in photoshop (photographers or web-designers) on this machine please leave a reply about how it goes there, I mean, is there any lags or retina-display problems, because I am also planning to work in all of Adobe Software.
Also, sorry for my english, this is not my native language, and sorry if this topic is not in the right place. Peace!

You will find that the relative performance of the two units will be very similar.  see the attached bench test scores:
    http://browser.primatelabs.com/mac-benchmarks
Note that with the retina, your storage will be significantly less. Whether the resolution of the retina is worth the premium you have to decide.
Though I an not an Adobe user, I would think that the retina with SSD as well as 16 GB RAM should handle those applications without any difficulty.
    Ciao.

  • Why is my mac secondary screen not showing up when I bootcamp? iMac (27-inch, Late 2013)

I have installed Windows 8 using Bootcamp. As soon as I did and opened Windows finished the install, made my profile etc...  But then I realized that my secondary screen was black and the power indicated it was turned off. I have looked and searched with no avail i have tried to restart my computer, update both Windows and mac, unplugged my monitor and re-plug it in and have tried switching the channels/settings on the monitor itself. Please help me this really bothers me.

If it's connected via a Thunderbolt port it won't work in Bootcamp. Last spring I bought a new iMac. I have some earthwork 3D model building software that is Windows only. My Late 2012 MBPr 13" OS X/Win7 worked great with dual monitors using the HDMI port but the big screen/little screen is challenging. After trying most of a weekend to get the iMac to work I finally came across something that said Thunderbolt not supported in BootCamp and the iMac had no HDMI port. Returned the iMac and still using the MBPr.

  • MBPr Windows and Thunderbolt Display

    Hi there,
I am trying to have my MBPr and Thunderbolt Display working under bootcamp with Windows 8. All the peripherals attached to the TBD are working fine but the display remains black/off. I am pretty sure that a solution exists but can't find the right. I've tried and under Windows 7 behavior still the same, whereas under MacOSx TBD display works fine.
    Thanks for you support !
    RV

I made the usb stick back when I installed windows 7 that made my imacs amd gpu see the monitor connected as it did in osx and in the same was as any other windows computer with a connected extra screen
(so I turn it on in windows display settings and maybe the amd catalyst software i forget)
when I upgraded to win8 it just used the win7 driver and it still worked fine
same when I later got te official win8 drivers from apple

  • MBPR as Second Monitor?

I know its possible to use the iMac as a second monitor through target display mode....however is it possible to use my 2012 MBPR as the second monitor for my iMac? I'm trying to edit a video and could use the extra screen real estate.

Yes, but not in a normal way.
You cannot use a MacBook Pro as an external monitor in the same way as a normal external monitor, nor by Target Display Mode.
If you are desperate, you can install a utility like ScreenRecycler or AirDisplay (the version for Mac, not iPad) that makes a Mac into an external monitor using your local network. But this is much slower than a normal monitor connection. It may not be suitable for situations that require fast refresh.

  • Resolution on iMac 27"

Hi everyone. I am a very new Mac user. Last week I bought the new MBPR 13" and love it. Yesterday I bought the iMac 27" i7 with the Nvidia 4bg card. Here's my question.
On the MBPR the text and screen looks great. Not so much on the iMac 27"
I only see three resolution options:
    2560x1440
    2048x1152
    1600x900
2048 probably looks good but the fonts just seem so tiny and unclear. I really wish I could try 1920x1600 but I don't see an option for it which I find strange.
Is there any way to clear up the text size or how it looks or even add the 1920x1600 resolution?
    Thanks!

I didn't realize that you posted this issue elsewhere, also.
When you set the display for scaled, there was no 1900 x 1080 scaled resolution?
Did you scroll through all of the resolutions that are in the box to the left once you activated the screen scaling feature?
Earlier generation of iMacs did have the 1900 x 1080 as a scaled screen res. option.

  • IMac retina 5K with image retention (ghosting) problem?

I have just ordered CTO iMac retina 5K. After 2 days, I saw the problem as same as MBPr's image retention or ghosting. Is this new iMac defect or bad order ?

Please read the warranty paperwork that came w/your computer.
You have 14 days to return the computer w/no questions asked.
You have 90 days of FREE phone tech support on top of your standard 1 year warranty unless you also purchased AppleCare which gives you an additional 2 years of coverage plus FREE phone support.
Strongly suggest that you take FULL advantage of the above before it runs out.  Let Apple deal w/the problems & your concerns. It's what you paid them to do.

  • MBPR and CS3

    Hi!
First time poster here. I'm getting ready to upgrade to a new MBP & deciding between the Retina and nonretina screens. I'm a heavy Lightroom user and occasionally use CS3. Will CS3 run on a MBPR or will I have to upgrade my photoshop? I'm planning on upgrading to Lightroom 4. I'm currently using a 2006 core duo iMac. I can't upgrade it to Lion or LR4. While it still runs fine, it is slow when open raw files in LR and I would like to take advantage of iCloud. I'm really looking forward to the increased speed of a new machine. I've seen both the MBPR and non retinas at the Apple store. The retina screen is amazing!
Many thanks for your help and opinions!
    Kris

    thanks for the reply
just a couple more questions please:
does the magsafe power have to be connected to the macbook (different size fitting from my 2008 macbook - thats why Im asking) and will the monitor be able to be used at its native resolution?
    thank you in advance

  • Facetime between my Mac and MBPr not working

I have 1 Apple ID account.  How do I facetime my iMac from my MBPr?  When I try it, it will say "Null" at the top of the Facetime screen.  Does this problem have to do with having 1 apple ID?  I tried separating my emails so one is associated with the mac and 1 with the MBP.  Any suggestions?

  • MBPr...should I wait or buy now

    Hello everyone,
I'm on the market to buy a MBP for extensive video editing.  I was about to purchased the 15" MBPr (16GB/512GB) from Bestbuy since they reduced the pricing but realized these prices never drop unless for a reason.  So low and behold...the rumor mill has the Haswell vesion is coming out very soon (mid to late October) but there is no concrete information.  I am hearing that this new version may not come with discrete GPU card.  This could be a serious issue for us editors.  We are already dealing with limited drive space...now this!  Apple is seriously pushing away the pro line and frustrating!!
    So...what should I do?

First off it's no secret that Apple uses Intel processors and Haswell processors are already out for the PC and they already have run some tests, there isn't much of a improvment in power or performance too much to really make much of difference in battery life. Of course there were running Windows, which is the same for all hardware.
It's public knowledge that Mavericks is going to pay better attention to performance/power etc., but again for what your doing it's not going to make much of a difference as you need more processing cores, power and cooling to get big jobs done fast.
It's possible that with Haswell that Apple will go all Intel HD graphics on the 15" MBP, deeming the 3D and pro video market no longer sustainable on portable devices and committing the MBP's totally to the consumer market.
You've got to realize that the new MacPro coming (also public knowledge) is going to be designed to handle 4K video that's upcoming, it's got a lot more pixels to handle than even HD does.
Currently FinalCut Pro X is struggling on current MacBook Pro's and the hardware design and power limits their use of heavy duty use even on power.
Apple is seriously pushing away the pro line and frustrating!!
No, it's the new demands of 4K on hardware that is making the MacBook Pro rather useless as a portable editing machine, sure it can do some on the job clips and train new users, but mainly that's going to be about it I'm guessing.
The new MacPro coming is a small design, power packed and yes, portable.
So instead of toting a notebook, you carry a case that contains the new MacPro and a portable monitor and you plug into power, keyboard, thunderbolt drives etc., and your rocking and rolling.
Since one really has to connect a MacBook Pro to power anyway since the battery life is so dismal....
Plus the new MacPro will have a HECK of a lot more cores than the MacBook Pro, thus it can render 4K video faster than a MacBook Pro can, on scene or back at the shop.
Once everyone realizes this, they will gladly welcome the new change, all those who are hobbyists on MacBook Pro's will be encouraged to use a iMac instead.

  • Merge my new MBPr data with old time machine back up

Got a new Macbook Pro retina, can I merge my old data (from my old imac using time machine ) with my new macbook retina data without loosing data from my MBPr?
I used my MBPr during holidays without having the opportunity to restore my backup from my old imac and now I have information/data I do not want to loose. If I just restore my back up from time machine (of my old imac) won't I loose any new information on my MBPr that I have not backed up (e.g iphoto or imovie data) ?
PS: I havent yet backed up my MBPr as I am afraid of overriding my old imacs back up

Put all of your data from your 'old' user into your Shared folder - accessible by any user. Then you can copy it into your new user folder(s) and delete the old user if you wish.
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • HT1338 White screen after updating iMac with Mountain Lion

Since attempting to upgrade from Lion to Mountain Lion this morning I am seeing a white screen whenever I boot my iMac.  It appears to be unable to boot.  I left it 30 minutes with no activity on the screen before power cycling but the issue remains.  I am hearing the "power on" sound when the iMac is powered up, but it simply stays on the white screen forever, without the Apple logo that we normally see.
I have a Time Machine backing up my iMac, but am unsure how I can restore from this as I am currently unable to get the iMac to boot.
Can someone tell me what I can do to get my iMac up and running?
    Thanks....

    Hey guys...
Just posted this potential solution over in the forum Clinton mentioned. Not sure if it's a proper fix, but it seemed to work for me.
    Cheers...
Had my first experience with this just now. Shut down the MBPr for it's longest off time since getting it last week (about 6 hrs) and logged in to the BSOD.
My go-to solution on any other MacBook has always been the PRAM reset.
Restart your machine. Hold down CMD+OPT+P+R before the gray screen shows up (harder now than on the older, slower machines). Keep holding it down until the startup sound plays 2 or 3 times. Then release the keys and let it boot up normally.
No idea why this works. Don't have any clue what PRAM even is or what it would have to do with all this - but it worked for me. At least this time. Maybe it won't the next!
    Hope it helps you all...
