Memory Leaks   Unresponsive Mouse

2009 8 core Mac Pro w/ 24 GB of RAM, ATI Radeon 4870, and a SeriTek PCIe eSATA card (card only has drives connected when running a manual drive clone).  When running Toast 10 or Parallels 9, my RAM will fill up (I use a program called Menu Meters to monitor stuff).  This machine worked just fine under OS 10.9 and earlier - no issues like this at all.  ClamXAV will also completely fill the RAM up (the meter will be full green, instead of part green, then mostly grey when Toast or Parallels fills it up).  I have to use Terminal to purge it so that the machine is usable.
The other thing that happens is that sometimes when the computer wakes up or I am in the middle of doing something, the mouse will still move, but the dock will not pop open and the left button the mouse doesn't respond.  The right button will open the right click menu, but will not respond normally at all.  I have tried a different Magic Mouse, but the problem is the same.
I thought that it may be a problem with the factory RAM and the Kingston RAM not playing nicely together.  So I ran it with just the factory 8 GB and then ran it with the Kingston 16 GB - the problem persists no matter which RAM is installed.  All of the RAM also passes the memory tests in Rember and TechTool.
So, I need to find out if someone thinks that maybe the bluetooth module may be going bad causing the mouse issues.  I also need to find out what is causing the memory leaks.  I followed the steps that someone gave on this site to boot into safe mode, repair permissions, reset PRAM, then reset SMC (or the other way around - I did it like they said to).  It did nothing to fix the problem.
I need some guidance here.  As I stated early on, the machine worked perfectly with OS 10.9.  I have WAY too much software that I use, so doing a completely fresh install is out of the question - I don't have time to reload everything.  This problem is annoying and I know that I am not the only one having these issues.  Any input will be greatly appreciated.  Thanks in advance.

Here is the EtreCheck report:
Problem description:
Memory leaks when using Toast 10 or Parallels 9.  Mouse also become unresponsive (it will move, but left button does not work and dock will not pop open - mouse problem happens independent of the RAM being filled up - different mouse was tried with same result).

  • I am getting a memory leak that sometimes leads to an unresponsive Firefox, but does not crash per se.

Hello, For the last couple of months, I am having issues with one of my tabs or the program itself causing a memory leak. I was hoping that subsequent releases would fix the problem, but when I downloaded V.11 it did not help.
I use tab mix plus and at any time, usually have about 25 tabs open. Everything functioned okay for 8 or so months up until recently.
I am wondering if there is a way to try to track down what is causing the leak. If it is one of my open pages, i will get rid of it. I tried opening one page at a time from scratch, but could not find the issue. .
I always have flash block enabled to cut down on the website junk.
    using OSX firefox v11.

Now, I'm not going to say it's an Add-On problem because from the research I've been doing on this problem for the last half hour shows that everyone has DIFFERENT add-ons, but everyone's having the SAME problem....
So I went through my add-ons and disabled them one by one, and the single add-on that has been giving me grief is the latest WOT add-on. So, I have Firefox 11 (so does my wife) and we both have the WOT add-on. But that's where the similarity ends... I have Windows 7 x64, she has Windows XP x86.... but she doesn't have the memory leak problem.
What I see is a sawtooth pattern over time. Memory goes up a little over 30+ seconds, then drops down. But over half an hour, the peaks of the sawtooth are larger, and it doesn't drop back down to the same level again - always a little more than before. And before you know it, FF is peaking at 1.5+GB, dropping down to 1.2GB... and FF is running very, very slowly.... excessive disk accesses (paging probably, though I apparently I still have 1.5 to 2.0 GB of free RAM). Killing FF frees it all up, and if I open FF again, it's back to using 250MB of RAM.
So, it's not the add-ons per se, but how they're interacting with FF (or the other way round).... most likely, it's this plug-in container they created to stop add-ons from taking FF with them when they crashed. Seems to have created more problems than it has solved..... would be great if you could choose not to use it....

  • Seems to be a memory leak in itunes 10.6.3.25

I cant seem to find a usefull end-user bug reporting system; so i just post it here: had to redownload all my songs (lots of them); after a few 100 iTunes displayed a message saying something cryptic like that there was not enough memory to save the library or so; little later iTunes completely hung; checked in task manager... about 1GB of memory usage. Just restarted downloading the rest of my music, memory usage is already over 200MB again... think you guys have a memory leak in your downloading or caching code.

    Close your iTunes,
    Go to command Prompt -
(Win 7/Vista) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES, right mouse click "Command Prompt", choose "Run as Administrator".
    (Win XP SP2 n above) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES/Command Prompt
In the "Command Prompt" screen, type in
    netsh winsock reset
    Hit "ENTER" key
    Restart your computer.
If you do get a prompt after restart windows to remap LSP, just click NO.
Now launch your iTunes and see if it is working normal now.
If you are still having these type of problems after trying the winsock reset, refer to this article to identify which software in your system is inserting LSP:

  • How to fix huge iTunes memory leak in 64-bit Windows 7?

iTunes likes to allocate as much as 1.6GB of memory on my dual-quad XEON 8GB 64-Bit Windows computer and then becomes unresponsive.
This can happen several times a day and has been going on for as long as I can remember.  No other software that I use does this - only Apple's iTunes.  Each version I have installed of iTunes appears to have this same memory leak.  Currently I am running version 10.7.0.21.
I love iTunes when it works.  But having to constantly kill and relaunch the app throughout the day is bringing me down.
Searching for a fix for this on the internet just surfaces more and more complaints about this problem - but without a solution.
Having written shrinkwrapped software for end users as well as for large corporations and governments for more than 25 years I know a thing or two about software.  A leak like this should take no more than a day or two to locate using modern software tools and double that to fix it.  So why with each new version of iTunes does this problem persist?  iTunes for Windows is the flagship software product Apple makes for non-Mac users - yet they continue to pass up each opportunity they have had over the years with each new release to fix this issue.  Why is this?
Either the software engineers are not that good or they have been told NOT to spend time on this issue.  I personally believe that the engineers at Apple are very good, and therefore am left thinking that the latter is more likely the case.  Maybe this is to coax people to purchase a Mac so that they can finally run iTunes without these egregious memory leaks.  I would like to offer another issue to consider.
Just as Amazon sold Kindles and Google sold Nexus tablets at low cost - not counting on margin for profit - but instead they wanted to saturate the marketplace with tools for making future purchases of content almost trivial to do with their devices.  Apple also counts on this model with their pricer hardware - but they also have iTunes.  Instead of trying to get people to switch to a MAC by continuing to avoid fixing this glaring issue in iTunes for Windows I would like to suggest that by allowing their engineers to address this issue that Apple will help keep Windows users from jumping ship to another music app.  The profit to be made by keeping those Windows users happy and wedded to the iTunes store is obvious.
By continuing to keep this leak in iTunes for Windows all it does is lower my esteem for the company and start to make me wonder if the software is just as buggy on Macs.

I have same issue. Ongoing for more than 1 year and currently running iTunes 11.3.
My PC is Dell OptiPlex 990 I7 processor, 8GB ram, W7 64 [always keep things patched up to latest OS updates etc]
I use this iTunes install to stream music videos etc to multiple appleTVs, ipads, iphones etc .. via Home Sharing
Store all my media including music, videos and apps on separate NAS  .. so the iTunes running on PC is only doing the traffic cop role and streaming / using files stored on NAS .. creates lots of IO across my network
Previous troubleshooting suggest possible contributing causes include
    a) podcast updates  .. until recently I had this auto updates on multiple podcast subscriptions, presumably the iTunes would flow this from the PC to save on the NAS across the network .. if the memory leak is in the iTunes network communication layer (?bonjour?)  this may be sensitive to IO that would not normally occur if the iTunes file saving was local on the same PC
    b) app updates .. have 200+ apps in my library and there is always a batch of updates .. some updates 100s of MB is size .. routinely see 500MB to 1GB of updates in single update run .. all my apps are
    c) streaming music / movies .. seems when we ramp up streamlining of music or movies . memory leak grows faster .. ie within hours of clean start
    c) large syncs of music or videos to ipads or iphones .. noticed that get big problems when I rebuild an ipad .. I typically have 60+ GB of data in terms of apps /  music / videos to load .. have to do rebuild in phases due to periodic lockups

  • ITunes 6.0.4(3) memory leak

I know this topic has popped up on the Windows forum, but I'd like to officially document the same problem in iTunes for OSX.
Using the iStat Nano widget, I've been monitoring my memory usage when running iTunes. When I first start the program, memory usage jumps to 600 MB. The longer iTunes is open, the more and more memory disappears, whether I'm actively using the program or not (i.e. listening to music). Eventually, this causes a hard crash. By hard crash I mean that I must use the on/off button to reboot the machine. I have had this problem since getting my computer (in mid-March), so there has been at least one iTunes update since then that has not fixed this issue. (I have a previous post on this topic called "iTunes freezing" that was made before I realized that it was caused by a memory leak.)
I am very, very pleased with my MacBook Pro and I realize that this is not a hardware issue. Has anyone else encountered this problem? Are there any plans to fix it in a future update?
Thanks in advance for any comments, suggestions, or solutions!
    2.16GHz 15.4" MacBook Pro, 2GB RAM   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   4G 40GB Photo iPod, 5G 2GB nano

I posted a question this evening on what sounds like the same issue: the link is here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=548752
I think your original post makes clear that this issue is about iTunes itself, it's not about any devices or iPods, not is it to do with the Intel or non-Intel processors... I will try looking at the Memory stats too.
What baffles me is that I had been using iTunes 6 for quite a long time (and only updating it manually, not automatically) before I ever experienced this.
My hunch (but what do I know?) is that my initial freeze might have happened for some other reason (too many applications working hard at once, as sometimes happens -- though I have had this happen reasonably often on the PowerBook it is extremely rare on the G5) -- and then in the course of that freeze / crash something in iTunes got corrupted (perhaps the database file that allows iTunes to navigate the iTunes library?)
By the way, what is the technical name for the total freeze thing (i.e. no beachballs, just complete loss of the mouse and keyboard response, clock stops, no shortcuts working, only PowerButton allows you to shut down).
Has anyone with this issue tried uninstalling iTunes (by Trashing the App) and reinstalling from a newly-downloaded copy? (I might try that ...)

  • Memory leak using CWGraph

I have a memory leak problem using the CWGraph control.
I have an SDI application (MFC using Measurement Studio) and I generate dynamicaly a dialog containing a 2D Graph, and I use the OnTimer() of the dialog to generate data and to update the graph, with a timer of 50ms. In OnTimer() function I have a loop to generate
and to update two plots on the graph. When I call a method of the graph (for example for changing the color of the plot or for updating a plot (using PlotXvsY)), I have a periodic increasing of memory with a fixed amount of memory (4k). In the same OnTimer() function I update also some CWSlide controls without memory leaks.
If I comment the line that call a method of graph
(ex. m_Graph.Plots.Item(1)....), the code works wi
    thout memory leaks.
I'll apreciate any suggestion about this problem.

I had the same memory leak problem with my program as well. I do not think it is because of using CWGraph. Memory leaks occur when you allocate memory and did not free them. The problem will accumulate and crashed randomly (sometime it crashed when you just move mouse around). Try this: if the program does not crash (memory leak crash) on the first time it compiles and runs, it is probable has nothing to do with the CWGraph. On the second and third run, if you did not free variable, the program will usually crashed. If your program crashed on the first time it runs, the problem might be something else.

  • Memory leak when redirecting to a remote XFree86 server

    Hi,
I'm running a Java application, which controlls our network equipment.
The application is written by our development team. It installs a graphical
user frontend in order to allow interoperation with the network administrators.
The application is run using the following environments:
    * Windows NT 4.0
    * Sun Solaris 8, local Xsun X11 server
    * Sun Solaris 8, XFree86 X11 server located on a linux host
    * Sun Solaris 8, CygWin/XFree86 X11 server running on a Windows NT host
It turns out, that the application runs fine, if the application and the GUI either
run both on a Windows NT host or the Sun workstation. However, if the application
is launched on a Sun workstation and the X display is redirected to any XFree86
X11 server, each change of the GUI focus - either forced by a mouse-click, or
an canvas being changed by the application itsself - consumes an amount of
3 MB of memory and never releases this again.
So I suppose any memory leak in the Swing/X11 interface ...
I've already searched SunSolve and installed all patches addressing memory leaks
in Solaris 8 and Xsun ...
Also our development team already has profiled the application using tools
like OptimizeIt without being able to locate any memory leak.
Has anyboday seen this before? Is there any bugfix/workaround available?
    Thx in advance,

We just noticed the same problem for our Swing Applet using JDK 1.4 on Solaris 8 displayed to any remote X server running on Windows 2000 or Linux. If we let the applet run long enough (the plot in the applet updated every second), we could easily use up 500-600 Mb. Again, on the local console on Solaris or Windows 2000 the memory was stable at around 70 Mb.

  • How to track Memory Leaks in 3.6.8?

I've been noticing for several updates now that I seem to be getting major memory leaks. Firefox starts off around 1-200,000 K memory usage in task manager, but within a few hours it will be past 800,000 K. Now, the things I've seen so far talk about disabling plugins and all to find the problem, but this doesn't happen immediately, so disabling things one by one isn't very feasible. How can i track the memory leak to a specific plugin, or else make it leak much, much faster so I can do the one by one thing?
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened
    == A few updates ago

Well, It just has taken a turn for the worse... In the attached screenshot you can see firefox took 1.123.112kb out of my memory at which point the GUI became unresponsive. This has actually happened before, but not as soon...
I had 18 tabs open (but at the moment I have all of them opened again after a restart of firefox and it takes 143.988 kb at this very moment, which still is a lot actually). My computer has 4gb RAM-memory of which 46% is in use at the moment according to windows task manager.
It would be great if the whole tabstructure and maybe the garbage collector for the TraceMonkey javascript engine was reviewed... This might point out where the memory leaks are located.

  • Memory leak in IMAQ Write PNG File

    Hi,
I have a labview program that I'm using to do Speckle Patter Interferometry - it takes an image, takes a second image after some time, then subtracts the original image from the first and saves the subtraction.  The process reveals fringes on an object deformed on wavelength scales.
The problem currently is that the program seems to have a memory leak.  When I run the program, the amount of memory being used (according to Windows Task Manager) just keeps going up and up then after about 20 minutes, it crashes with the error:
    Error 1074396159
Not enough memory for required operation
The error is normally when the file tries to write the png file - though that is the part of the program that takes the most time so it could just be coincidence that it happens at this point in the loop.
I've tried using the labview profiler (output attached), but can't see a particular VI that is using an abhorrent amount of memory.
I'm fairly stuck for ideas - I've attached a library with the VI and its sub VIs - if anyone would be so kind as to give me a hand I'd be very much appreciative.  I realise that my code is quiet messy - this is my first attempt at labview (albeit quite a long way into my first attempt) so any suggestions would be much appreciated also.
    Thanks
    Sam

    Hi Sam,
I'm glad to hear that you managed to fix the problem in your code. I have had a look at the code you posted and I have a few suggestions on how you can improve it.
In your code you haven't included the error clusters from the VIs. Most sub VI functions included in LabVIEW will have an Error In and Error Out port that will transfer any error information through the VI. If an error does occur in the code, the error will be passed through the rest of the VI. If a sub VI or function receives an error at its error in port the VI will not execute and the error will pass through until it reaches the end of the VI. At the end of a the VI there needs to be an Error Handler function to display the error information. As error information flows through the VI the same as the data, using error clusters is a good way to determine the flow of data through a VI. This is a good way to determine the data flow through the VI as opposed to Sequence Structures which should be used in moderation.
I have taken a segment of you code and made some minor modifications to demonstrate how error clusters can be used (see screenshot below).
Error clusters can be implemented into any logic for the stop condition of a while loop. The Unbundle by Name using the Status option can be used in conjunction with the error cluster to produce a boolean output depending on if an error has occurred. If an error does occur, the function will produce a true and if an error does not occur it will produce a false. The error cluster can also be expanded by hovering the mouse over the top or bottom of the function and dragging the grey box up or down. This is useful for when you want to produce multiple outputs from the same data, such as the histogram data in your VI.
Another thing I noticed in you code was some redundant logic. You had set the Stop button default on your front panel to true, which meant that an inverter had to be used to stop the first while loop and the stop condition in the last while loop had been changed to Continue if True. If you had kept the stop button default to False and the stop condition of the last while loop to Stop if True, the inverter on the first while loop would not be needed. This however is only a small issue but its something you could keep in mind when writing other code.
Hopefully these suggestions will help you to further develop you LabVIEW code. I understand that implementing these suggestions into you current code could be an issue due to the size of it, but they are good features to consider when developing any code in the future.
If there is anything you are unsure of please do not hesitate to post any questions. I will be more than happy to assist you.
    Kind Regards

  • 2014.2 Crash by scrubbing - serious memory leak? (screenshot attached)

Hello. I've bought one year premiere pro cc plan. After upgrate from 2014.1 to 2014.2 I suffer with many crashes a day. I can't roll back, because I am in the middle of the feature film edit and new files are not opened by 2014.1
The most anoying crash is about memory use growth.
First - my system and sequence specs:
I have 48gb ram, intel i73930k processor, 4TB main drive and 3x250SSD drives for scratch disks. My Gpu is 2 x nvidia gtx 780 (3gb ram each). I work in 4k workspace and with uhd timeline 2.35 : 1 ratio. (3840x1628)
    Second - how to crash.
I open the pproj file (about 8mbytes in size). It is a full feature film, i edit it in 3 parts for better performance. My main codec is cineform, both for HD previews and final 4K encoding.
Then I move playhead over any clip  already rendered with preview (HD - mpeg or cineform).
Then I hold left mouse button and I start to scrub playhead left/right randomly along timeline, the problem unfolds: ram usage starts to go up, after some time of scrubbing it hits the ceiling and premiere crashes (along with eventual other apps opened as firefox).
It seems like premiere is registering every displayed frame in memory, even if it is already rendered as preview. And there is no limit set for doing this, so it overflows and crash.
As you see on the picture, in preferences there is 8GB reserved for other apps, and optimization for memory set.
Scrubbing over non-rendered clips makes ram eating even worse, crash occurs earlier.
I wonder - do you people have this similar problem? Could someone reproduce this inside any larger project (30 minutes of standard movie edit).
I would like to find solution, because I cant allow for so many crashes during serious production workflow.
    nl

I'm having the same problem too.
I've been posting my issues on another post entitled, "Just spent $7000. on new custom computer and PremiereProcc2014 crashing". (see my NEW profile computer specs as of two weeks ago)
I've been experiencing about 25 crashes in an 8 hour period. Some after 1/2 hour and others back to back crashes.
I didn't even think of why it was crashing until I called support, whereas they took over my computer and showed me that even when timeline is PAUSED, YES EVEN JUST PAUSED, we watched the RAM clime and clime to the ceiling until Premiere crashed.
It's so frigg'in frustrating that people here are complaining and there seem to be absolutely no talk about this issue. It's probably the cause of many Premiere issues, in my humble opinion.
Strangely enough, the tech fixed the problem (but this has been happening to me often and even with my older computer). Anyway he stopped several Adobe related running programs in the background, and took my timeline to a new project.
Basically, I'm not sure exactly what he did to solve the problem, and sadly I suspect it will return as it always has done so.
One strange note is that he reset all my preferences back to the defaults. I'm talking about maybe 15 presets that I have including a handful of changed key-strokes (to my liking), and simple things like "double-click opens in same folder" and "don't replay timeline after rendering" and "don't go to beginning of project after end of play-line" and changed around my user interphase to my liking.
These type of customization shouldn't cause Memory Leaks? I just don't get it.

  • Crystal report XI makeas memory leaking

    Hi all:
My application use vs2003/COM+ with independ crystal report XI and it has a serious memory leaking issue. After I generated the report, the memory grew twice and then soon the application is crashed after it is up to the maximum memory.Microsoft helped me to look at the dump user file and their concusion is that the Crystal report was build with Debug mode and not release mode. I never heard it before since I only add module to my deployment project and never know it has debug and release module version. So Can I please get help and how can I get the release crystal report module?
copid from the Microsft reply email:
    Hello Helena,
Your custom modules are built in Release mode as per the configuration settings in Visual Studio, however, all the dlls that are built in Debug mode are listed below:-
    crystaldecisions.reportappserver.commlayer.dll built debug
    crystaldecisions.reportappserver.clientdoc.dll built debug
    crystaldecisions.reportappserver.cubedefmodel.dll built debug
    crystaldecisions.reportappserver.controllers.dll built debug
    crystaldecisions.reportappserver.datadefmodel.dll built debug
    crystaldecisions.reportappserver.reportdefmodel.dll built debug
    crystaldecisions.keycode.dll built debug
    crdb_adoplus.dll built debug
    the crystaldecisions.crystalreports.engine.dll  version is 11.5.3300.0
    Thanks
    Helena

You can not. The memory will never go down to zero - at least not as long as the app is running. There is a number of files, assemblies, etc. held in memory by the framework until the app is shut down. This behaviour is by design, and is actually quite important. First with an application more then one report can be loaded at one time, so the underlying dlls couldn't be unloaded until all reports for that application were closed. If we behaved this way, everytime a new report was opened we would need to load all our core dlls, search for optional dlls and read all the registry keys over again. This would be a performance hit in the speed of the report being viewed and on the entire system. By leaving our core engine open after the report is closed there is no longer this bottle neck, and really if we changed this we would get lots of complaints.
Now in general this is not that big of an issue for Windows applications as it is usually one user on a system at a time and 40 MB for a user is not much. For web applications I can see this as a potential issue, however if you are having 100 users at a single time running reports from your web application I might suggest that Crystal Reports may not be the best solution for you. I suggest you look at Business Objects Enterprise where you can offload the report generation from your Web App server to the Enterprise server to see if this would benefit you.
A memory leak would be if you see this number increasing for ever - unitl you run out of memory and the mchine become unresponsive.

  • Yosemite and Mail massive memory leak and excessive CPU usage

I've just installed Yosemite and upgraded to 10.10.2 via the AppStore. Now I have a problem with Mail sucking up all the CPU (>106% !) and memory (>8Gb and rising while doing nothing). Everything runs fine when I quit Mail. Very disturbing behaviour!
I've tried several suggestions found elsewhere on the board here, such as turning off and even removing all Mail plug-ins including SpamSieve, but without positive results. I've tried un-selecting 'Store draft msgs on server', as well as the option for junk and sent msgs. but again without any difference. Going Offline within Mail also makes no difference to its memory hogging or CPU usage.
I notice this is an issue that's been around since last year (wish I'd known that before upgrading to Yosemite today) and I am just completely flabbergasted that it still exists. Would've thought Apple'd have fixed it in the first but certainly in the second incremental OSX Yosemite release.
Is there anything else I could try that's proven to be effective in stopping Mail's massive memory leak?

Okay, I've run Disk Util and restarted. Seems to have made a little bit of a difference to the RAM gobbling in that it appears to be going at a slower rate, but it's still up at around the 45Gb after an hour. Here's the EtreCheck report in the hope that it helps.

  • Tool tip memory leak

I seem to have a memory leak associated with tool tips.  When ever I place the mouse over a panel using tool tips I cas see the dynamic memory usage continuously increasing.  If I comment out the call to the tool tip functions (i.e. SetCtrlToolTipAttribute), the memory leak dissapears.
    Solved!

  • Apparent Photoshop Memory Leak

Over the last couple months I have been having what seems to be a memory leak problem with Photoshop. I'll be working on a document nice as can be, my screen will freeze, go black, then return with my graphics drivers telling me that it has just recovered from a failiure. At this time photoshop will not respond, and I am forced to close it, and lose all the work I have done.
The crashes usually happen when I am transforming objects, however it has happened while using vector, and raster tools like the pen, and brush.
I have been having this problem ever since I switched laptops from an Acer Aspire (Pentium 6 integrated win8 4gb RAM), to an Acer V3 (AMD A10 amd radeon 7660m win8 6gb RAM). On my last laptop that was noticably worse in terms of hardware, with this new laptop I've been having worse problems.
I use CS6 on both systems.
I have up to date graphics drivers, and I have updated photoshop to the latest patch (as of 16th December).
I am also not able to limit the amount of vram photoshop is allowed to use through the preferences, and it keeps resetting itself (every time the program crashes).
Part of me wants to blame the AMD APU that's in their A10 CPU, but I am not able to pin it on that system just yet.

With an ATI card, unfortunately that's not the right approach.  AMD has fallen on its face lately.  Maybe they lost the guy who knows what he's doing, I don't know.
Try switching Photoshop's advanced GPU setting to Basic, and close and restart Photoshop.
If you've already done that, and it's not working, seek out Catalyst 12.8 and see if it's available for Windows 8.  That's a decent (though not perfect) recent version.  You'll have to uninstall the current version first in order to install the earlier one.
I have some hope for 12.12, but so far they've been completely unresponsive to my reports of problems with 12.10 and the newer betas.  Apparently the Adobe engineering people can't get them to move on these problems either.  Somehow it seems Windows 8 caught them off guard, even though Microsoft had released all those previews.  But don't fret; 12.10 and newer don't work worth a darn in Windows 7 either.

  • How to determine memory leaks?

I tried in XCODE, the RUN/ Start with Performance TOol / and tried out the various options. I was running my app and looking to see if it would report increasing memory use but it seemed to be looking at my total system (i was running under the simulator). In general what is the recommended procedure for determining memory leaks, which tool to use, and what tracing can i use?
How does one look at the retain count of an object? are there system routines that have knonw leaks?

You took the right path. Once instruments comes up select the Leaks tool. Turn off automatic leak detection. In your app, start off at some known state, do something, and come back to the known state and check for leaks. For instance start off in a view, do something that brings up another view then come back to the original view and check for leaks. Leaks will show you if you leaked. Since you took a very deterministic path then checked it should be straight forward to go to the code and find / fix the leaks. Leaks shows you where the code where the leak was generated.
