Memory upgrade on a MBP but with a MBA motherboard?

Hello,
The motherboard of my MacBook Pro (mid-2010) has been replaced (under warranty by an Apple Store) by a MacBook Air motherboard.
The system configuration shows that there is currently 2 slots with each 2G of RAM, my question is: is it still possible to upgrade the RAM to 2x4GB?
(or should I request that a replacement for an actual MBP motherboard?)

Take it back and get it fixed properly, with the correct logic board.

  • Memory upgrade on G560 and problems with removing the access cover

Hi, this is my first post here - just bought myself a Lenovo G560 following the demise of my HP nx6325.
The product I bought has only 2 GB RAM and so I bought an extra 2 GB chip from Crucial, which arrived here this morning.
I've started to follow the manual's instructions to remove the system cover to gain access to the memory slots but, after removing the 2 screws in the middle of the cover and loosening the 5 screws around the edge, the cover seems most reluctant to pop off. It doesn't seem a very substantial piece of plastic and I'm worried about breaking it.
I've tried gentle pressure under the little lip with a table knife but the cover doesn't seem to want to shift - it just bulges up at that point. I've checked and rechecked that I've removed the 2 screws in the centre and completely loosened the other 5......... Does it generally need some force to remove it, or am I doing something silly?

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Thanks, Duck3 - I got the cover off, but I required more than just a sharp pull with my finger. - in fact, I couldn't any purchase on the access notch with a finger. I had to use a large screwdriver in the notch and gently apply increasing leverage, far more than I would have had the confidence to do without your advice.
Anyway, now up to 4 GB and flying!
    Thanks again for your help.

    Hi John,
If you have another Mac with Firewire & a working Optical drive, you can use that to Install it.
Check whether you need a 6 pin to 9 pin FW cable or whatever each end has.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661
Put the Install DVD in the the other Mac, shut both down, connect with a Firewire cable, boot the other Mac holding the t key down, once the floating FW symbol shows up, boot the this Mac holding the Option/alt key down, eventually the Install Disk will show as a Boot Option on this one.

  • I use images for presentations. Recently I've noticed a decrease in quality ( sharpness and definition) of pictures copied into Keynote. Same problem with both JPEGs and TIFF files. I've recently upgraded to keynote 09, but with no improvement.

I use images of paintings for presentations. Over the last 3 months or so I've noticed that I cannt copy images (either JPEg or TIFF) without a reduction in sharpness and definition. Hope someone can help with this problem.

Figured it out myself! yay!  (only took my entire moring)
    The solution:
    Dont print to PDF!
SAVE AS COPY, then select Adobe PDF and click SAVE, this will bring up a dialog box with the options you need (including the "High Quality Print" Adobe PDF Preset)
This was not clear in any of the instructions i read

  • Upgraded to Lion, Mac, but with firefox browser, unable to zoom out/in with pinch gesture

installed Lion 10.7 for Mac. I have a MacBook Pro, 2.53 GHz intel core 2 duo, the pinch gesture for zoom in/out doesn't work on the firefox 5.01. For the Safari, the gesture DOES work.

.... is there a way to downgrade back to lion 10.7.3 since that' worked fine.
The only way would be to revert to 10.7.3 by using Time Machine or by cloning from a previous 10.7.3 clone.
Hence, the importance of always having a backup, even more important with a slow Internet connection.

  • Ext HDD seen by 2011 MBP but not 2014 MBA

    Hi all
My GF just unboxed a new 13" MBA. One of the models refreshed last week
She wants to set up fresh & just bring over some data from ext HDD's she used with her old MBP.
It is a 2Tb Seagate Drive (USB 3), which has an external power supply.
The drive is formatted into 2 partitions, a 1.5TB OSX Journaled and a 500Gb FAT-32 (for when she needs to transfer files to/from a PC).
The drive shows up fine on her MBP just fine. In Finder & Disk Utility.
However on the new MBA, there is no signs of it at all. Disk Utility & Finder shows nothing.
Both left & right USB ports on the new MBA work ok. I can see a different Western Digital (USB 2) powered ext. HDD no problems.
The Seagate drive LED lights up when plugged into the MBA and you can hear it spinning, it just won't show anywhere in the OS.
    Any ideas brains trust?
I've done all the usual troubleshooting.
Could it be something to do with the firmware on the MBA needing upgrading?
    Thanks, Luke

    hi
typo mistake, what I meant to say is that your external HD is recognised by you old MBP and it is running in MBA but not shown (not being recognised as external USB) as you said that "The Seagate drive LED lights up when plugged into the MBA and you can hear it spinning, it just won't show anywhere in the OS." , have you checked that the power for the exHD on? because as I said ealier that I have ex HD imation 1 Tb used as backup for TimeMachine and someday forgot to turn on the power supply but when the exHD was plugged, the LED ON and I could hear the drive running, unfortunately not recognised by me MBP until I turned the power on. If the power is ON in your exHD then I suggest to contact apple customer service not the community only as you MBA is 2014 and under warranty

  • Memory upgrade on iMac G3 700, help with system crashes

I tried to do a memory upgrade on my iMac, so I bought two kingston 256 MB PC133 modules, but none will work, the system starts, but hangs in about two minutes after loading the desktop. I went back to use the older memory module wich is an spectek, but I need the upgrade, any ideas?
    Thanks!
    FedericoMG.
Ps: Sorry about my english... I'm from Argentina... :-P

    Hi Federicomg
The iMac 700 G3 should have been supplied with 1 stick of 256mb ram. However which is the correct type i am not sure as the Apple specifications for this model state PC100 whereas my iMac G3 700 graphite was supplied with 256 MB PC133-333 SDRAM
    http://support.apple.com/specs/imac/iMacSummer2001.html
Apple profiler from my iMac this is the original supplied RAM from Apple:-
    DIMM0/J13: Size: 256 MB
    Type: SDRAM
    Speed: PC133-333
    1) I would re-instal the original ram and open system profiler to see what type the ram is.
    2) Keeping the original stick in place add another stick of the new ram and look again in profiler to see if its recognised and again try the second stick to see if there's a problem with one of the sticks.
I am currently running my iMac with a small upgrade of RAM and the additional RAM is 128MB of PC100 and i have noticed the performance improvement since adding the PC100 so it's working and i have suffered no ill effects doing this..

  • Mainstage crashes with certain memory upgrade that work with other programs

I updated my memory from 2G to 4 but selected a cheaper brand that had good feedback. It works fine with all the programs but Mainstage seems to need a certain quality memory as the program crashed all the time after several minutes or so of playing, but oddly, the program completely disappeared from my screen when it crashed with the rest of the computer (a Macbook Pro 2.2) working fine. When I put the old memory back (2Gig) in it only crashed when the memory was full as it fills up continually, bit by bit, while you are playing. Anyway, I thought I would mention this in case someone has the same problem with a more 'value' memory. I am RMAing it and getting a better brand. This originally did this in Leopard but downgrading to Tiger I found the same problem. I am also using a Firewire rack, sound card. RME Fireface 800 that makes the instruments sound phenominal, I might say though may be consider overkill.

I've used a number of budget Ram sticks in my day, and have never heard of Ram that is working properly but can't handle a load that another stick of the same type and capacity could handle. I do know that you're supposed to put 'matched pairs' into those MBP's in order to get the highest performance. If anyone reading this has more insight on the particular question, (ie. can certain brands of Ram not perform the same as other brands, excluding sticks that are faulty or damaged), I'd love to hear.
I'm glad you're up and running, and I hope it wasn't the Ram since the Mainstage update seems to have alleviated the problem for you. Rember is the same test as Memtest, but with Memtest you boot up from the console, so it can check every sector of the Ram. Rember runs while you're running OSX so parts of the Ram can't be tested since it's being used by the OS.

    BDAqua,
    Thanks for the response.
Apple has used the term "Digital Audio" to identify this machine.  System Profiler has the following information:
    Machine Name:          Power Mac G4
      Machine Model:          PowerMac3,5
      CPU Type:          PowerPC G4  (2.1)
      Number Of CPUs:          1
      CPU Speed:          800 MHz
L2 Cache (per CPU):          256 KB
      Memory:          768 MB
      Bus Speed:          133 MHz
      Boot ROM Version:          4.3.3f2
      Serial Number:          XBxxxxxMK9
      Sales Order Number:
Yes, I could connect them by ethernet if all I wanted to do was transfer files, but I would like to network them so I could use wireless internet.  The machines are not always so close together, I did that to simplify the testing.  With the very slow transfer speeds I am reluctant to move ahead with the internet step.

you are out of luck, I think.
Not using the exact spec for memory wil cause trouble.
When you have the original in (1066MHz) and add another with higher speed (1333) there is a (small) chance that the higher speed one is "clocked down" and will work, but expect kernel panics often. Most of the time it will not work.
If there is no standard spec ram in at all, the mac will not start.
Luckily ram is cheap nowadays. Send it back.
The best way to buy is researching the Manufacturers' site and use the configurator, then go shopping, if you want.
Use only respected brands: Crucial, OWC, personally have not so good experience with some other brands. And remember "pennywise is poundfoulish".
I think Amazon will take it back and refund. Very unlikely that the memory is harmed. Ask them to take it back.

    Hello,
Only option is upgrading your Mac's OSX, since Apple will not allow iOS to go backwards.
    Snow Leopard/10.6.x Requirements...
    General requirements
       * Mac computer with an Intel processor
        * 1GB of memory (I say 4GB at least, more if you can afford it)
        * 5GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)
        * DVD drive for installation
        * Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.
        * Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and terms apply.
Which apps work with Mac OS X 10.6?...

  • Before my PC had iTunes, I loaded Aps from store onto my daughter's PC with iPad connected. I indicated my email address and Apple password. Now I want to upgrade to next iPad but Aps in my iPad are not on my PC iTunes. Do I have to buy again to keep them

I'm a new user of an iPad. Before my PC had iTunes (it does now), I loaded Aps from from the iStore using my daughter's PC with my iPad cable-connected. I indicated my email address and Apple password--not hers and paid for these Aps--receipts arrived via my email. Now I want to upgrade to 5.1 but the Aps now loaded on my iPad do not show up  on my PC iTunes library. When I click 'Upgrade' I get a warning message that says all Aps currently on the iPad will be obliterated in the process which of course I don't want to have happen because they're not showing up on my PC which presumably means my PC is not aware of what's on my iPad. Do I have to buy these same Aps again to keep them if I'm going to upgrade to 5.1, and how do I get my iTunes on my PC to back up the Aps currently loaded onto my iPad?

You should be able to copy the apps (and any other iTunes purchases) over to your computer's iTunes via File > Transfer Purchases. And as long as apps remain available in the store, and you use the same iTunes account as you originally used to purchase them, you should be able to re-download them in the future : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2519
If you are already on iOS 5+ on your iPad then you should be able to update the iPad directly on the iPad via Settings > General > Software Update .
