Menu Bar Icons Disappeared and other issues after Security Update 2006-001
Hi,
I was really affraid when i've heard about the Safari vulnerability, so I was really happy to see the Security Update 2006-001.
But after installing it, I'm having regrets:
* mouse speed turned to default settings
* system preferences crashes when i try to access to Mouse & Keyboard
* all the menu bar icons disappeared: Bluetooth, Airport, Time, EVEN Spotlight
* Finder is slower...
I've repaired disk permissions but: nothing happens....
What should I do please?
Should I wait?
How did you fix it? I'm having the same problem
myself.
Mandy,
I'm gonna tell you a secret, just like i said my problem wasn't due to the Security Update but because of Front Row.
How? Because, I've hacked my iMac (without iSight) to install FrontRow (with an update), and i've installed the Security Update at the same time. Restarted my computer, and thought the problem was due to the Security Update.
If you did the same thing, here's the trick to remove Front Row:
Delete Front Row (/System/Library/CoreServices/Front Row.app)
Install/reinstall the the latest Mac OS X Update Combo.
This article assumes you haven’t tried installing Front Row before without the use of Enabler. If you have used one of the very early versions of Front Row (ones installed without Enabler):
Delete Front Row (/System/Library/CoreServices/Front Row.app)
Delete the preference file (/System/Library/LaunchAgents/com.apple.frontrow.plist)
Remove any Login Items that launch Front Row (System Preferences >Accounts >User >Login Items)
Disable any shortcuts managed by third-party applications that launched Front Row.
Reboot and reinstall.

Focus switch to finder after Security Update 2006-001
Just updated with Security Update 2006-001 on PB G4 running 10.4.5.
While running Safari or Mail or any App. and not using the app (like when reading a webpage or mail message) the focus of the OS switches to the Finder after about 10 seconds or so. So in the top menubar right from Apple icon the OS switches from Safari or Mail to Finder.
Moving the mouse does not make any difference. i.e does not prevent or delay the switch.
Clicking on the application window returns focus to that application (Safari or Mail).
Anyone?thanks for the input. did not resolve the probelm though. finder started to crash every 2 minutes.
but on the bright side: its a user thing. my guest account was not affected.
so i trashed most of my prefs. that resolved the finder problem.
currently working on restoring my prefs & email accounts, oh well -
Trouble with 4G and other issues after latest update.
To whom it may concern,
After the recent update I have been having the following problems:
I lose 4G in many places where I was receiving great 4G access before.
Battery life seems to have suffered a little, this may be due to 4G hunting.
New software applications were installed like the Caller ID app, and flipboard. I hate when software is installed without my authorization and then cannot be removed. What year do we live in Verizon?
I have heard on this and other forums that a factory reset does not resolve these issues but Verizon claims that it is the final resolution. We should not have to do a factory reset after an update. I understand that there are many variables to consider with all the apps out there but that is what testing is for. That is why we wait for updates from Verizon.
I will attempt a factory reset to resolve my issues. If this does not resolve the issues I will be contacting Verizon about a refund for the 4G access that I am now being denied.
Thanks
AlphaDangerHey AlphaDanger!
The year is 2013 and I read you loud and clear on wanting to make sure your software operates smoothly on your GS3. So, let's make that happen.
Right off the bat, thank you for the details as well as considering a hard reset. But, I'd like to make another recommendation if you have yet to do it. Instead, I'd suggest wiping the cache partition. To do this:
1.) Power off your phone.
2.) Simultaneously hold the volume up key, home key, and power key.
3.) When it vibrates, release only the power key.
4.) When you see the Android recovery menu, wipe cache partition using the volume down toggle and power key to select.
5.) Then select "Reboot System Now".
Please let us know how this goes.

Mail.app and attachments issues after security update
Hi there
just installed latest security update (via software update) and now when i try to attach any file to an email, I get the spinning beach ball.
have tried rebooting and zapping the pram
anyone experienced similar or have an idea what might have happened?
cheers
benHi ben.
This could be caused by some Launch Services cache or preferences corruption. The following article describes how to manually reset Launch Services -- the notes at the bottom of the article also provide information about the side effects of deleting each of the files involved:
Resetting Launch Services
If you prefer using a cache cleaning utility instead of following the manual procedure described in the previous article, this other article provides links to some utilities that can be used for troubleshooting and cache cleaning:
Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption
It seems that the most appropriate utility for solving this particular problem is Tiger Cache Cleaner, but you may also want to consider other utilities, such as OnyX, or Cache Out X, which are free. Whatever utility you choose, be sure to read this first:
Side effects of System cache cleaning
As an example, this is how you should proceed with OnyX:
1. Quit all applications.
2. Launch OnyX and enter your administrator password.
3. Click Maintenance. In the Reset section, check LaunchServices database.
4. You may uncheck any other pre-checked options if you wish.
5. Click the Execute button.
6. Restart the computer. -
Apps open in Script Editor after Security Update 2006-001 Mac OS X 10.4.5
Several applications, notably "MathGo 2.2", no longer open when double clicked. Instead they open in a Script Editor window (after informing me they are not scriptable).
It is as if Finder no longer recognizes them as applications! "Get Info" shows them as still being apps however.
I can work around this by using AppleScript to launch them: "tell application "HD:Applications:MathGo 2.2:MathGo 2.2" to activate" but that's kind of a pain.
Anyone else having problems like this? I'm certain it is tied to security update because I have an another start-up drive without the latest security update. These apps still run correctly when double clicked on that system. The Finder gets easily confused, who knows why, by applications whose name ends in a "." and something other than the extension "app"--it manages to get confused even without the latest Security update. There are those who have one account where "GreatApp 2.1" launches without a hitch, and another account where it doesn't. The easiest thing to do is do GetInfo on the application, and rename it to "GreatApp21.app"--it should then work fine.

Cannot start after Security Update 2006-001
I've just installed the security update and my iBook G4 fail to start now. I've been waiting for more than an hour, and it seems to be stuck with the following messages:
- The following StartupItems failed to properly start:
- /System/Library/StartupItems/PrintingServices
- - execution of Startup script failed
Can anyone please help me?I had a similar problem. I repaired permisions both before and after the update. In my case the I couldn't adjust the volume or display through the keyboard. I couldn't restart, shutdown or logout. I used the power button to shutdown, ran applejack. No effect. Same thing.
I reset the open firmware settings and everything seems to be okay.

After applying Security Update 2006-001 can't launch Office X apps
I noticed that, after applying Security Update 2006-001, I can't launch Microsoft Word nor Excel nor Power Point (Office X, 10.1.6 updated). If I double click the app icon, select and try to open from File menu or try to launch it from the Dock, I get the message "The app has unexpectedly quit". This does not affect Entourage so far. I can open existing files double clicking on their icons and, once the app is running, create new files from menu bar. Repaired permissions, checked for corrupted preferences files or templates but to no avail.
Can anybody help?
iBook G4 Mac OS X (10.3.9) 512 MB RAMDivX Doctor is a freeware I had downloaded a few days before applying Security Update 2006-01 (http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/4683). It certainly was responsible for my problems with Office X apps because, as I said, they completely disappeared as soon as I got rid of it.
I hadn't the memory problems you mentioned (I've applied also Security update 2006-02 without problems).
Don't know if this can help, but you might want to give a try to Disk inventory X (http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/14393) [quote]Disk Inventory X is a disk usage utility for Mac OS X. It shows the sizes of files and folders in a special graphical way called "treemaps".

Rosetta Problems after Security Update 2012-001
My crack team of sys admins and I have devised a method for resolving some of the issues regarding the Security Update 2012-001 and Rosetta.
http://www.educate-it.org/content.php?130-Rosetta-Issue-after-Security-Update-20 12-001
Click this link for an Installer that will revert the files necessary for some Rosetta apps to run after the Security Update. This is a band-aid and is only recommended in emergency situations. Apple is currently working on a fix, but until that happens, we are stuck with reverse-engineering their update. I hope this helps those in distress from this update.Backup files off the computer (not TimeMachine) and disconnect.
If you have TM, or a option key bootable clone use that to erase and restore from.
If not, c boot off the 10.6 disk, use Disk Utility to >Repair Disk and Permissions, (do not format or erase!!) and simply re--install 10.6 from the disk. Note: Does not touch your files and most programs, but backup your files regardless.
Note: If Disk Repair gives a error that is not repaired, then you have to consider erasing the drive (with Zeros) and try reinstalling 10.6 fresh or replacing the drive.
Reboot and log in, update to 10.6.8, it should not include the security update at this time (second pass it might show) because it was just released and they might need to pull it. (they need to pull it)
When you reboot, make sure to reinstall any programs that installed kext files into OS X, you'll know, they won't work.
If you get gray screen, hold the shift key and update your installed software so it's compatible with 10.6.8.

Rosetta crashes after Security Update 2006-003
The other day I installed Security Update 2006-003, and now a number of PowerPC applications crash the machine.
It's a funny crash, the mouse keeps moving and the capslock key goes on and off, but that's it. Nothing on the screen animates or updates. Windows will not move, dock does not do anything. cannot force quit or command-tab. The only option is to do a hard reset or hard shutdown.
I found this article:
http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20060517111924138&query=rosetta+crash
I hope it's fixed soon!
MattHello!
I'm glad I found your post -- a brand new Intel Core Duo 20" iMac is doing the same for me after Security Update 2006-003.
What I've found on this end so far is that Norton AntiVirus 10 for Macintosh seems to aggravate the problem. I had a system that was running fine (complete with NAV10) before applying the 2006-003 update. At first I thought the problem might be due to user error--maybe NAV wasn't quite ready for Intel Macs, but Symantec says it is after you get version 10.1 from LiveUpdate. (I did.)
I finally had to erase the hard drive and reinstall the entire operating system from the provided restore discs. After I did that and got the latest software updates, I tried again with NAV. It still caused the same problem...a complete lockup.
The first time around, only NAV seemed to cause problems. Other PowerPC-native programs running in Rosetta seemed to be OK. This second time around any PowerPC-native app running in Rosetta (after the install of NAV10) would lock the machine up completely, except for the mouse pointer. (I have also noticed that the machine still responds to being pinged over the network, and that Apple Remote Desktop 3 says it is online. So the crash isn't stopping everything from working.)
So my conclusion is that there is something seriously wrong with Security Update 2006-003 and Rosetta, and it may be made worse by NAV10 for Macintosh. In any case, I'm going to steer clear of this update for now. -
Hi!
Something very strange started happening. When I click the spotlight icon on the top bar, all system apps icons disappear and then reapear.
I've also seen this happen without me clicking the spotlight icon.
I'm using a iMac 2.8 GHz Intel Core i7 with 8 GB of RAM using Mountain Lion (10.8).
Any idea of what this is?
I've attached a screenshot:
Thanks!
PatriciaWell, I self-answer.
Following advices found on very old threads here (like this), I understood one possible cause could be some incompatibility of the extras in menu bar. I tried removing Bluetooth extra and also the volume controller (that I never use), and it seems, after a few days, the problem is no more present. -
Menu bar icons vanished and iPod not showing up in iTunes anymore
All menu bar icons on the right side (keyboard, clock, battery) vanished.
It's not possible to get them back by mark their visability in the system configuration. The system just ignores any attempt to do that (I can mark the check box, but nothing appears on the menu bar; after leaving and returning to the panel, the mark has gone).
Besides of that, my iPod doesn't show up in iTunes anymore (but does on the desktop).
My laptop may be physically damaged as it fell down to the floor a few days ago.
Can anybody help?Welcome To Discussions Daniel Lerch!

Have you run the Apple Hardware Test and also Repair Disk?
THESE ARE THE STEPS FOR USING DISK UTILITY TO REPAIR YOUR HD
1.Insert the System Install disk, Mac OS X CD-ROM disk, or Restore DVD disk, then restart the computer while holding the C key. Use the System disk, of the OS, that is currently installed.
2.Once started up from CD or DVD, choose Disk Utility from the Installer contextual menu for Panther, or Utilities for Tiger, on the Menubar at the top of the screen.
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from disc to access Disk Utility.
3.Click the First Aid tab.
4.Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
5.Select your Mac OS X volume, if necessary.
6.Click Repair. If DU reports errors it has fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported.
7.When finished, select Quit Disk Utility from the Installer menu.
8.Select Quit Installer from the Installer menu.
9.In the resulting pop-up window, choose restart.
10.After the computer has restarted, you can eject the CD.
Repeat steps 5 & 6, but select the Hard Drive this time. It's usually the first listed with the manufacturer's model number.
Make note of the S.M.A.R.T. status.

My menu bar icons for volume, date and time, ect. All disappeared randomly and I don't know why. I went into my system preferences to try to re add them and when I click the box to put it back, it just deselects automatically and won't let me re-add them. I also can't open finder. It says the application isn't responding. I've restarted. I've gone through the disk utility stuff. I'm at my wits end on how to deal with this. Suggestions/info?
Thanks!Nate
I too am at a loss for lack of details - especially about the 'refusal' to obey in the Prefs.
One thing that springs to mind concerning the menu bar 'icon' items - in some apps, the App's menu has a LOT of menu headings. In the case where it needs the room, it will push some out of the way (somehow) - an example is BBEdit
BBEdit removes these

Menu bar items disappear, and external hard disks not mounting
Hi,
This problem started yesterday. I start up my Mac, and none of the menu bar items in the top-right of the screen show up. Then I noticed that none of my external hard disks had mounted.
Looking at the Activity Monitor, I saw that sustemuiserver was not running.
Reading around, I discovered that this usually follows a FrontRow hack (which I haven't installed). I tried deleting the ~/Library/preferences/com.apple.systemuiserver.plist file and logging out and back in again. Everything seems to work again, for a while. However, the same thing happened this morning.
Has anyone else experienced this, and anyone know a fix to stop it from happening?
Thanks!
TomI've been having the same problem for a while (I believe since 10.5.3). I have reinstalled OSX, installed OSX 10.5.6 combo hoping that it would fix it, but nothing yet. I have the problem only when I insert an expresscard into the slot and restart. It connects to a PCI expansion chassis. When I restart with the ExpressCard installed, all menu items dissappear and I can't eject volumes (hard drives) from the desktop. If I restart without the ExpressCard in, the menu bars seem to work properly. I tried with an older G4 running 10.4.11, with a CardBus card and the same chassis, and that worked fine... all menu bar items displayed and worked properly and I could eject disks.
I have also tried creating new users, but that didn't work either.
