Messages icon in menu bar is grayed out

The messages icon in the menu bar is grayed out and shows "offline" I cannot  choose any of the options, but if I try to click on an option it changes to that option in the messages in messages menu for my status although that menu is gray as well. Other than that messages seems to work ok. Any suggestions?

Found the answer. You have to turn on Bonjour Messaging in accounts.

  • I can't open mail, the header bar is grayed out and program as itself doesn't open

I launched Mail as I ordinarily do. It opened up, but the header bar was grayed out. Finally I managed to open program  via Message/Go To/ Inbox, but no messages appeared in any of my mailboxes (even though I had several still in there from today). Nothing is happening, I even can't quit teh mail program.
Please suggest guys what to do. I have to use my gmail account and it's soooooo uncomfortable.

There is a forum for notebooks. One for Mail: OS X too.
There is a setup wizard for Mail but I doubt that is the issue.

Gmail - you can remove an account, re-enter etc and it will rebuild and synch with what is on the server.
You can always use Chrome as well and login that way and Chrome gmail extension gives you a separate application.
Can also be used from any mobile device - tablets etc.
I suspect it is your system, your home mail library, prefs, and you should try to insure your backup was current but don't backup now, repair the hard drive, try creating a new account. A Guest account would not help.
No, if you can't quit you need to do some system maintenance.
And you are on j10.6.8 and not Lion.

  • ITunes icon in menu bar

I was looking at a friend's Powerbook G4, he had an iTunes icon (rewind/play-pause/ff) icon in menu bar, next to clock etc.
I can't work out how that icon gets there.
    Any clues please?
    My iTunes is 5.0.1 (4)
btw - my friend has gone away, so can't ask him!

It' not an iTunes feature. Some 3rd party applications can put some items in the menubar.
Go to versiontracker.com and search for 'itunes menubar'.
You will find a few applications that can do what you have seen.

  • Unwanted MobileMe icon in menu bar

    This is what I did:
I went online and ordered a power adapter replacement for my iPhone. I was asked for my Mac Support username and pw.
Then, after doing so, the MobileMe icon suddenly appears on my menu bar. (I've never subscribed to this).
I then went to system prefs then MoblileMe (wanting to remove said icon from menu bar). I was told that I had changed my password and that I should type in my new one (?). I tried a few of my pw's (for the heck of it) to no avail. I'm now unable to get into MobileMe prefs and I seem to be stuck staring at this (ugly) icon. I checked my keychains, nothing.
(I did do the 6-month trial on .Mac when I got my MB last Feb. but I wasn't into it. The pw I had for that's not working either.)
    Any suggestions?

This is the iSync forum. The MobileMe forums are here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=116
Anyway, an 'ugly' MobileMe icon in your menu bar? Do you mean the Sync icon, which looks like 2 arrows in a circular formation?
If so, to get rid of it just hold down the command key (to the left of the space bar) and drag it out of the menu bar.

  • No icons on menu bar

I previously had spotlight, time, language, ect. icons on the menu bar but now there is only the gmail icon. I tried clicking on the options of adding icons on menu bars, but it doesn't work. For example, i click "show time and date" and when i switch panes, it resets itself. Spotlight and others doesn't work either. So if anybody can help, I really appreciate it.

    Hi, Dale —
Seems as if there've been a lot of folks lately who've encountered problems with SystemUIServer — the process that manages the right-hand side of the menu bar.
Troubleshooting this may require several rounds of interacting. For now, try these:
    (1) Delete the preferences file ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systemuiserver.plist, restart, and reset as required in System Preferences
    (2) Disable all "system enhancers" — including especially any 3rd-party Menu Extras — that you may have installed. Some of these may show up in System Preferences »» Other. In particular, disable or uninstall Application Enhancer (APE) if it's there.
Please post back to share your progress, and we'll take it from there
    HTH!
    Regards,

  • My sound bar is grayed out again

I have an early MBP 2009. Last week I lost control of my internal speakers and I can't adjust the volume from zero and the bar is grayed out. Last week I fixed it by running the last software update for 10.7. Now my sound bar is grayed out again. I am not sure what to do to fix this. I don't want to keep running the updater since it ttakes so long and I loose productivity.
Any suggestions? Is this a bug that needs fixed by Apple?

    1. Reset PRAM.   http://support.apple.com/kb/PH4405
    2. Reset SMC.     http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
        Choose the method for:
"Resetting SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own".
    3. If you see red light in the headphone port, plug the headphone into and out of the headphone port
to flip the microswitch inside the port.

  • No airplay icon in menu bar

no airplay icon in menu bar (Apple tv 3, mavericks)

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You will see the AirPlay icon on the menu bar by two reasons:
    1. Your computer is compatible with AirPlay Mirroring > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5404
    2. Your computer has detected an Apple TV in the network.
If both things are done, you will see the AirPlay icon. You can see which Mac you have got in  > About this Mac > More Info. If your computer isn't compatible, you can use an application like Beamer or AirParrot

When viewing Facebook, the blue menu at the top disappears.  I can only log out when I go to messages and the menu returns.  Any ideas?

These files were lost two years ago.
That's not consistent with what you wrote in your first message. I can't help you unless I know what's going on. Either you do, or do not, have backups of all the data you want to keep. If you do not, then the first thing you need to do is back up those files. It makes zero sense to do anything else. In order to back up, you'll need either of two things: another Mac, in working order, with a FireWire port and enough space on its internal drive to hold your files; or an external drive, also with enough space.
On the other hand, if you do have backups, or if you simply don't care about any of the data, then the solution to your problem may be quite simple. All you have to do is boot from your installation disc (your profile says you're running Mac OS 10.5), erase your internal drive, reinstall the Mac OS, then restore your data from backup. You will need to be selective in restoring software, because incompatible software may be what caused the issue.
But it's also possible that you have a hardware failure, in which case you can't get your computer working again until it's repaired.

  • Huge gap between icons in menu bar

Lately the menu bar will randomly throw in a huge gap between icons. Initially I thought it was a specific app, but now it's happening with all sorts of random icons there...definitely not the same icon each time.
The icons you see on the left are the ones I launched after the gap appeared.
Restarting my machine seems to be the only solution to removing the gap.

I've tried trashing the prefs for this and have the icons down to just the Apple ones. Then, as I slowly add other menu bar items, they'll start adding the gap directly next to the Apple items.
    http://share.shpigford.com/images/menubar-20090507-074520.png
But the thing is, it doesn't matter which items are on the left. Different ones can be next to the gap and it still is there.
Restarting or logging out/in so far has been the only fix (albeit, temporary).

  • Icons in menu bar gone

All the icons in the menu bar on the top right have disappeared. Time, airport status, time machine, battery status, everything. I've gone into system preferences and tried to set the icon to show up, but it resets itself to the off status when I click out of the particular menu. I also found out taking screen shots by doing command+shift+3 doesn't work anymore either, despite it being enable in system preferences.

  • IChat Icon in menu bar unresponsive~ Suggestions/fixes?

    Hey all, 1st post here!
I have a problem with my ichat icon in my menu bar- it highlights when clicked, but does not unfold into the menu that it is supposed to access... Any ideas/suggestions?

    Hi Heady1701,
    Welcome to the    Discussions
I would start with going to iChat Preferences > General section and turning the Menu Bar Icon Off.
Does this make the icon disappear from the Menu bar ?
If it does not delete com.apple.ichat.plist
This requires you go manually to your Little House iCon/Lirary/Preferences as Spotlight does not look in here.
Restart iChat if you have to delete the .plist
If it does remove itself from the Menu Bar then try resetting it and using it again.
It may help if we also had more info.
Is it Greyed Out when you are Logged Off the Buddy lists ?
(IT should show just Saved Status Messages)
If you are logged into AIM or Jabber (GoogleTalk) it should show the Buddy list that would be front (it is the top one in iChat > Preferences > Accounts which can be dragged in iChat 4 into any order)
(i.e. There are two menus it could show you depending if you are logged in already)

  • How do I delete spinning wheel on top of program icon in menu bar at top of screen?

I had LogMeIn installed on my iMac and it worked fine for a while.  Then the icon for the program in the menu bar at the top of the screen went gray.  When I hover the mouse over the icon a spinning pinwheel appears, so I can't click the icon to start the program.  I deleted the program and then reinstalled it, but the gray icon and spinning wheel never whent away.  Any thoughts on how to delete the spinning wheel would be appreciated.  I'm a novice on the IMac.  Thanks.

Problem solved.  Placed Icon for Log Me In on dock and rebooted iMac.  Not sure why, but it worked.
