MI424WR-GEN2 set WAN port to work as LAN

Hello,
Is there any chance to make WAN port of MI424WR-GEN2 to work as LAN?
I have multiple devices and need one more wired port.
Thanks a lot for your replies.

No.  The WAN port cannot be used for LAN connectivity.
If you need more Ethernet ports, buy an Ethernet swtich.  If 100Mbps is fast enough, 10/100 switches are quite inexpensive.  1Gbps switches can be found for decent prices as well.
Good Luck.

Can the WAN port be used as LAN when AirPort Express (2nd Generation) is setup to join a wireless network? (IE: 2 LAN ports)
I haven't been able to get a clear answer on this. I believe the 1st generation would act as WAN/LAN depending on setting, but what happens with the 2nd generation?
    Thank you for your time.

If the Express joins a wireless network wirelessly, in other words its WAN port isn't connected to anything, the correct way to connect a wired client to it is by using its LAN port.
I don't know what would happen if you were to connect a wired client to its WAN port instead — it's just not supposed to be used for that purpose. It won't permanently break anything if you were to try it though. If you were, the worst that would occur is that your network would become unresponsive as packets continuously traverse its WAN port in a circular fashion, which might require that you power down your router to reset your whole network.
If you are already using your Express's LAN port and you need another, the way to provide more ports is to purchase an inexpensive ($10 or so) switch. Connect it to the LAN port and as many other pieces of equipment as the switch's available number of ports.
You're correct about the first generation with the single Ethernet port. It could be used in either capacity depending on its configuration.

  • I have Fios. I have the TC connected via ethernet to the Fios router. TC WAN port ethernet to Fios Lan port. Then I just have the TC create a wireless network that is different than the Fios wireless network. How do I set up an Airport Extreme to the TC?

The Airport Extreme is a 4th Gen unit. I just want to keep the TC wireless name to go further through my house.

The Ethernet connection will be from one of the LAN <-> ports on the TC to the WAN port (circle of dots icon) on the AirPort Extreme.
Then you can use AirPort Utility - Manual Setup to configure the AirPort Extreme as follows:
Click the Wireless tab located just below the row of icons
Wireless Mode = Create a wireless network (Not "extend a wireless network" as many users incorrectly think)
Wireless Network Name = Same name as your TC network
No check mark needed next to "Allow this network to be extended"
    Radio Mode = Automatic
    Channel = Automatic
Wireless Security = Same setting as the TC network
Wireless Password = Same setting as the TC network
    Confirm Password
    Click the Internet icon
    Click the Internet Connection tab
    Connect Using = Ethernet
Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)
Update to save settings and restart the entire network
Computers on the TC network will now be able to move to the area where the AirPort Extreme is located and not have to "switch" networks. This is known as a "roaming" network.

  • Setting WAN port MTU?

I mentioned in another thread that I had been having some problems with NAT on the AEBS. I think I narrowed it down to something going on between my DSL router and the AEBS.
I believe the DSL router needs to have an MTU of 1460 or fewer bytes per packet. Probably becuase it encapsulates TCP/IP before sending over its DSL ATM link.
I was able to get similar broken behavior when I replaced the AEBS with a similarly configured Linksys WRT54GS and forced the MTU to 1500 in the WRT's web managment tool.
It looks like MTU set to "auto" or 1460 or fewer bytes per packet makes the WRT54GS behave nicely with the DSL modem. Presumably, that would make the AEBS happy too... if I could find a place to set the WAN port's MTU. Anybody know how to do it?
The DSL router is about a five year old Siemens Speedsteam connected by ATM to the telco's DSLAM. Perhaps newer DSL routers do something a little smarter with packet encapsulation, fragmentation and reassembly. Not mine, by the looks of it.
    Thanks,
    Bill

I just waned to add, the Speedstream is taking care of the PPPOE itself. The model I have is the 5861, which is a full-blown IP router. I am getting a /27 block of IPs routed to me by my ISP.
If not the MTU size, perhaps the AEBS is setting the DF bit (Don't Fragment) bit in the IP header, so if the Speedstream needs to fragment a big packet because it is slapping on additional encapsulation for PPPOE, it has to drop the packet from the AEBS because the packet is over 1500 bytes when encapsulated.
The issue is only a problem when certain ports (say, 473 for instance) are NATted. Port 80 seems to be no problem. Unfortunately, there is more than basic HTML in this world.

  • Setting WAN Port Speed on RV180

We have an RV180 and can not get connected to a port on CPE equipment after setting the WAN port on the RV180 to 100/Full.
The CPE equip port is set to 100 Mb/Full Duplex.  When the port on the RV180 WAN is set to AUTO and we connect to the CPE we see a lot of CRC errors and very poor performance.  When we set the RV180 WAN Port to 100/Full we see no traffic at all.
We have a Cisco ASA 5150 router connecting to the a different port on the same CPE and when we set its port to 100/Full we see very good performance.
We have upgraded the RV180 to the latest FW (1.0.3.10) but that didn't solve the problem.
Can anyone provide assistance with setting the WAN port to 100/Full with success?
    Thank you,
    John

Hi John, incrementing CRC errors traditionally indicate a physical problem. I've not known it to indicate anything different.

I believe that these statements are true.
Auto negotiation is good when both sides are configured to negotiate. When one side does not negotiate the other side should not try to negotiate.

  • Troubleshooting Airport Extreme's wan port?

I have an Airport Extreme base station that doesn't seem to be communicating through its WAN port.  Both Apple and Windoze computers can connect to it, wired or wirelessly, but I am unable to make the base station communicate with a gateway device, a (PPoE) DSL modem.  My brother (whose device this is) was having the same problem with his cable modem.
As the Airport boots, the link light on the WAN port blinks green a couple of times, only instantaneously, but otherwise remains dark.  Once it's booted, the status light blinks amber.  And of course there is no throughput, no connectivity to the Internet.
I also have a LinkSys WiFi router that works perfectly using the same gateway device and the same ethernet cable, which gives me to believe both the modem and the cable are in proper working order.  All the configuration information I'm entering into the Airport's web interface I'm cut and pasting from the same text file I habitually use to the LinkSys router (to cut down on clerical errors).  So presuming it's configured properly, presuming the cable and the gateway aren't at fault, I have to think the WAN port has given up the ghost.
So I thought to ask the Apple cognoscenti if they agree with my diagnosis.  Is there a diagnostic I'm overlooking?  Do the WAN ports on these devices have a history of being problematic?
    TIA
    Slanjevar!

I have discovered the chief problem was that the Airport doesn't take kindly to unresolved/unacknowledged errors/conditions under the Status button on the Summary page of the Airport utility.  It was regarding "extended mode" as an abnormality requiring acknowledgment, as well as my switching off all wireless security, as a temporary diagnostic measure.  Once I'd told it to 'Ignore' those conditions, I got both a solid green status light and a steady green link light on the WAN port.
However, it still isn't passing data.
As I was stumbling around in the Airport utility's GUI (before resolving the "start button" problem), I noticed it had an "Extend a wireless network" mode.  Since what my brother was after in the first place was getting stronger signal to the far end of the house, I asked if this wouldn't better suit his needs than substituting the Airport for his current (underpowered?) WiFi router.  He agreed, so I've changed my focus to setting up the Airport as an 'extender.'
Now, reconfigured in 'extender' mode, its 'Status' on the GUI's 'Summary' page shows 'Normal' and the status light is steady green.  The GUI for my WRT54 (with DD-WRT firmware) shows it is authenticated and joined to the network, as both a LAN and a wireless client.  And the Airport's logs concur: "Joined BSS [WRT54's MAC]" and "Installed unicast TKIP key for authenticator [WRT54's MAC]".
I've done this with the Airport either using DHCP or with a statically configured IP address to see if it made any difference.  It does not, either to its ability to join the network or to its (lack of) throughput.  So every indication I can find confirms it is a connected and fully functioning member of my network.
I also have an XPSP3 box connected to one of the LAN ports on the Airport.  The NICs on both ends show a solid green link light.  The Airport's logs acknowledge that the XP box is connected: "Connection accepted from [::ffff:192.168.1.3]".  And the XP box can 'ping' the Airport.  All of which spells "connected" to me.
However, the XP box can neither draw an IP address (the Airport's DHCP clients list remains empty) nor communicate with anything upstream of the Airport (which it only can do once I have given it a static IP address).  If I try to tracert or pathping from the XP box to the WRT54 (via the Airport), it stalls out at the Airport.  The response is the same whether I have the Airport's WAN port connected to a LAN port on the WRT54 or not.
Address scheme-wise, my WiFi router (WRT54) is on 192.168.1.1.  The XP box that I have connected to the Airport via ethernet has a reserved IP of 192.168.1.3, but now is configured statically to that address because the Airport (seemingly) does not support it contacting the DHCP server.  The Airport consistently had been drawing the first available address from the DHCP pool, 192.168.1.10, but now I have it statically configured to .100 because my brother doesn't use DHCP reservations on his network, and I'm replicating how he will configure it to leave nothing to chance.  Having a static address saves him grief having to figure out what its address has become should the Airport utility not be able to find it (which seems to be its norm) and he has to connect manually through the Airport utility.
I've spent almost every waking minute tinkering with this thing since midday yesterday and I've not yet seen evidence that the Airport has passed so much as a single bit of data.  And it isn't just the WAN port, it doesn't want to pass anything wirelessly either.  This thing is about to get my goat.  Remind me never again to offer my brother a favor.
Any thoughts?  Humorous anecdotes?  Naughty limericks?
    EDIT:
I also have a network detector on my cell phone than can identify every device, wireless or otherwise, on the network its connected to.  But it does not "see" either the Airport or, naturally, the XP box beyond it.

  • Uses 4 Airport Extreme w/ Broken WAN port

Does anyone know if there are any uses for an Airport Extreme 802.11n Base station that has a broken WAN port?
I find myself with a piece of hardware in this state. I am aware that AppleCare fixes these issues, but I just got to wondering. Thanks.

Yes, that's correct. Just be sure to get the AirPort Extreme in bridge mode.
With the WAN port not working, that leaves the 3 LAN ports. One will be occupied by the ethernet connection from your other router, so you'll have 2 available LAN ports for ethernet devices. If you need more LAN connections, you could add a 5 port or 8 port switch, etc.
If you want to use the AirPort Extreme to create a wireless network, and you already have another wireless router providing your network, you could setup the AirPort Extreme to effectively extend your wireless network. Use the same wireless network name, same security and same password as your "main" router and you'll have a seamless wireless network. Computers will automatically connect to the router with the strongest signal.
If you don't need to extend your network, you could use the AirPort Extreme to setup a "guest" network with a separate wireless name and password, etc.
Basically, with the WAN port dead, the only thing that you could not do is hook the Airport Extreme up directly to a modem and set it up to be the "main" router on a network.

  • RV016 port forwarding by WAN port?

    Hi,
I am replacing an ancient SOHO 90 series router with our new RV016, I was told this thing would do everything we needed which I didn't doubt, however, I am wondering if I made the wrong choice now.  We have 5 IP's on one line coming into the current router, that isn't an issue, if needed I can make 5 seperate drops with each IP, but, now we have several servers hosting services on the same ports.  For example 5.2 host a web server which is called to by the .250 address, 5.3 has one as well from .251, we have one on each of the 5, there are other servers too though on each of the 5 using the same ports.  When I go to port forwarding the only option is to forward the single port to a single server, can I not forward ports from each WAN connection to a different server?  Any help would be appreciated.
Here is a short sample from the old soho of what I want to do

The multi-WAN feature of RV016 is designed for redundancy and load balancing, so basic port forwarding is not tied to a specific WAN port. If a LAN server is exposed to the internet by the 1-to-1 NAT feature of RV016, the server can be accessed by a specified public IP address.

  • Time Capsule Internet WAN port is not working, what can I do to set it up?

When I plug the ethernet cable from my router to my Time Capsule it should turn on a green light in the back of the TC, but this light is not turning it on anymore, and this port is not working, how can I set it up?
I want to create a wireless network with the TC, but if this port (Ethernet WAN port) doesn't work, I can't, or can I? How?
Then I want to use my 2 Airport Express to use the network that I want to create.
I hope you can help me, thanks a lot.

what model is the TC? A1xxx from the base please.
How old and is the front LED otherwise showing it is operating OK?
What is the network setup..? Is the TC bridged or router.. or is it in Join wireless network mode now..
If the later.. the ethernet ports are turned off.. you need to do a factory reset of the TC.
Factory reset.. Hold in reset button.. THEN power on the TC.. keep holding in reset for about 10sec until the front LED flashes rapidly.. there is a good chance the ethernet will work now.

  • Port Forwarding for L2TP/IPSec VPN Behind Verizon Actiontec MI424WR-GEN2 Rev. E v20.21.0.2

I've got a NAS setup with various services running on custom ports to help minimize exposure (especially to script kiddies). I've tested everything both internally and externally to confirm they all work, and even had someone at a remote location confirm accessibility as well.  Port forward configurations performed on the Actiontec are working well.
I installed an L2TP/IPSec VPN server, tested internally and it connected successfully.  So for all intents & purposes, this validates that the VPN server is correctly configured to accept inbound connections and functioning correctly.
I logged into the Verizon Actiontec MI424WR router, setup port forwarding for UDP ports 500, 1701 & 4500.
Note: I added the AH & ESP protocols based on what I saw on the built-in L2TP/IPSec rules
With the port forwarding in place, I tested VPN externally but it didn't connect.
I've done the following so far to no avail:
Double & triple checked the port forwards, deleted & recreated the rules a few times to be sure
There are no other pre-existing L2RP/IPSec port forward rules or otherwise conflicting port forward rules (e.g.: another rule for ports 500, 1701 or 4500)
There was an L2TP port triggering rule enabled, that I toggled on and off with no change
Verified the firewall on VPN server had an exclusion for L2TP, or that the firewall is off. (Firewall is off to reduce a layer of complexity, but it worked internally to begin with so I doubt that's the issue.)
Since it works internally, and there are no entries in the logs on the device indicating inbound connections, I'm convinced its an issue with the Verizon Actiontec router.  But unfortunately, I'm not sure what else to try or where else to look to troubleshoot this.  For instance, is there a log on the router that I can view in real time (e.g.: tail) that would show me whether or not the inbound connection attempt is reaching the device, and whether or not the device allowed or blocked it?
    My router details:
    Verizon Actiontec
    MI424WR-GEN2
    Revision E
    Firmware 20.21.0.2
Verizon Actiontec built-in L2TP/IPSec rule templates.  They're not currently in use, but are baked into the firmware for easy configuration/selection from a drop down menu.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

normally a vpn on that router, will have a GRE tunneling protocol as well.
two ways to build the PF rules,
    Manually
    Preconfigured
I know the preconfigured VPN rules will do the GRE protocol as well, but if you do it by hand you can't get it.

  • I am unable to set up my new Time Capsule with my BT Home Hub - every time i connect the ethernet cable from Wan port to Home Hub, the internet signal drops

    Hi there -
I've just purchased a new Time Capsule, and would like to set up a small home network with my Laptop, iMac and wireless printer. I'm following the first steps, but as soon as I connect an ethernet cable between the WAN port of the TC and the ethernet port of the HH, my BT internet connection drops out and I have to restart the HH. Upon which point it drops out again. The airport utility can see my TC, and gets as far as me typing in the new network name and setting up a password, but then it can't quite get through to the next stage. All the time it's just flashing amber.
    Please help!

Setup the TC in bridge mode before you cannot it to the HH.
Simply do the setup fully in isolation. And do it by ethernet.
Setup wireless to create a wireless network.
You can use either same SSID =Wireless name as the HH .. same security same password.
Or use a different name and setup.. totally up to you.
Update the TC and then plug it into the HH by ethernet.

  • I have the new Air Port Extreeme model A1521 and I need to set up port forwarding for HTTP. HTTP is not on the list in the set up. Does anyone know if any of those choices work for HTTP?

I am on a Windows 7 Ultimate PC and right now there is no Airport utility for setting up the new Apple Extreme so you have to do it on your iPad or iPhone. Does anyone know how to set up port forwarding for HTTP to get to DVR security cameras? There is nothing in the list that indicates HTTP port forwarding.

Thanks for your reply Tesserax as I did figure this out on my own. It took a bit because all of the options are not clear what they are for like the previous Airport Extreme and Apple does not support or guarantee that port forwarding will work for you application nor did any of the Apple support persons I spoke too have any knowledge for this feature. You also have to fill in the public if you are viewing through someone else's Wi-Fi or on your cell phone carrier network. This new Airport Extreme is a bit different since you cannot use the Airport utility on a PC like the older model and if anyone else is reading this they should be aware that if you do not have an Apple computer, iPhone or iPad and I'm not sure if some of the other network enabled devices like iPod Touch that you must use that can do it, there is no Airport utility for the PC and you would be wasting your money or have to take it back and get another brand wireless router to use if you do not own any of the above mentioned Apple products.

  • WRT400N WAN port doesn't work.

Nothing that I connect to the WAN port seems to get the internet LED to illuminate. I have a DHCP access to a Motorola CPEi 150 which works great if I connect to it directly with a netbook or if I use a dlink WRB-2310 router but it doesn't ever seem to register with the WRT400N WAN port. I've even tried connecting the WAN port to the dlink and still no LED or address from the DHCP server. It's a recently bought this Linksys-refurbished router and I think it will cost more to send it back that it cost to get. Is there an easy way to determine if the WAN port works at all without constantly disconnecting the internet in my house as family members are getting a bit upset with me.

I tried connecting a LAN port to the WAN port and it worked.  I then connected the WAN port to the LAN port of a DLink router in series and I could communicate with the internet.  I then connected it directly to the Motorola CPEi 150 and the port showed nothing.  I then tried to repeat my steps and could not get any responce on the WAN port even with rebooting the router and reverting to factory defaults.  The WAN port appears to have  intermitten problems.  I will attempt to troubleshoot some more but I may have to give up.

  • RVS4000 WAN PORT set to 1000Mbit

Is there a way to set the WAN Port to 1000Mbit? My Cablemodem supports up to 1000Mbit on the interface but the RVS4000 only runs at 100Mbit WAN Port speed.
It would be great to have the same options as for the LAN ports to change sensing also on the WAN port.
    Thanks.

    Hi Gonzalo,
The RVS4000 router can only allow one WAN IP address at a time. The RV series routers (RV042, RV082, and RV016) can allow multiple WAN IP addresses for load balancing or failovers.
