Microphone output sound delay

Hello,
I'm a musician. Often, I plug my headphones into my laptop and listen to music. Then I plug my guitar in the microphone jack and enable the microphone sound output so I can play along with the music on my laptop. In other words, I use the laptop as a mixer.
Now with Windows 7 RC x64, the mic in output has quite some delay, between 0.5 and 1 second. The laptop is an HP 2510p with ADI SoundMax HD integrated audio.
With Windows XP, this has not been an issue.
The driver is the one that Win7 automatically got via Windows Update. I also tried the Vista x64 driver provided by HP, no difference.
As you can imagine, such a delay makes playing along songs impossible. When I strike the guitar, half a second later I hear it from the speakers.
Is there any suggestion what I could try? Change settings, regkeys, drivers?
Best regards,
Jay

Hi everyone,
Thanks so much for your input! I solved this problem on my laptop... I signed up to this website just to write about how I went about solving this issue in hopes that I can help even one musician out there in the world... I literally could not record for
about a year and had almost given up on this issue :(
Also, I should note that Priestest's solution is probably the one you want to try first. I only went about it another way because I encountered the same issue as VietTrung:
"The "sound" window should still be open, then go to "playback" tab, right click on speakers and left click on properties. Then click on the "levels" tab, but I
don't see any microphone section! Help me !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :(("
Me too. I'm not sure why I couldn't see the microphone section in the levels tab, but when I did a search online, I found this:
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-70822&selectarea=SUPPORT&tempselected=5 Pretty interesting read. If you are curious, query for "MIGR-70822" online to find out more about this issue.
---- My solution -----
I am using a recording software by the name of Reaper (I'm thinking other softwares may work too, I haven't tried Audacity but that's the most my friends use). I went to Options> Preferences > Audio > Devices > and Selected "ASIO" for my driver.
The default option selected was "WaveOut" which gave me a HUGE DELAY.
It gave me no ASIO drivers are found! But a quick search online will tell you you can download ASIO4all. Restart Reaper and go back to Devices menu to select ASIO.
If you are still having problems after selecting ASIO, I highly recommend this forum:
http://forum.cockos.com/showthread.php?t=21590 (look at Diogene's post please)
--- Results ---
There was a huge difference between "WaveOut" and "ASIO" and I can record now.
I really hope that helps some musicians out there in the world. Recording is a huge motivation to improve your skills :)

  • HP ENVY 17 microphone and sound output problems

Hey i have a HP ENVY 17, and i have been having some problems with the microphone, sound outputs and the sound in general. The microphone output haven't been working ever since i got the notebook in November. at first i thought it was problems with the settings, either on the computer or on Skype, which i used for communication. I tried with other Voice Chat programs such as Mumble, Ventrilo and TeamSpeak - neither worked. I got a friend over who knows a little bit about computers, and the only thing he could think of was that the microphone output was non working. I am using Steelseries 7H headset. Now i have to use the integrated microphone which often gives background or typing noise.
Lately i am only hearing sound on the right ear, i have checked my headphones with an iPod, so i know there is nothing wrong with them.
The third problem occurs when i turn the volume over 20% on the computer. It starts to make a background noise, almost like a waterfall, both with headset and without.
Another little problem i have is nothing to do with sound, but since I'm posting this already, i thought i could atleast ask. When i play games the top left side of the computer, right over the fan can get hot while the fan is working on hardmode. If i play really graphic-focused games, like Crysis 2, it gets super hot(i burn my hand if i hold it over the fan). Is this just because it's a laptop and the games demands too much? Or is it dust in the fan or something? And what can i do about it? That last question counts for all the problems
    Thank you on beforehand
    - Kirrod

I still need help, if there are anyone here who thinks they have any kind of solution to my problem. Like; how do i get it repaired? Send it to HP? How long will it take?
Im sorry if my english is not so good, it's my second language. It might be called microphone input, and not output. The place you put in the microphone cable.
    Please help!

  • Output sound to multiple devices without delay

    Hi there
I'm using Audio MIDI Setup on my 27" iMac running Mavericks to ouput sound to 2 devices (both iMac speakers and a Big Jambox, a bluetooth speaker), it works but with some latency. I tried drif correction in Audio MIDI Setup but doesn't change a thing.
How can I output sound to multiple devices without the latency issue ? I'm pretty sure that's possible. Maybe with a 3rd party software?
    Thanks

I am not sure how I would do this if I am using Airplay as one output and hard plug for Computer speakers as the second output. The bosie system is in another room (why airplay) and the computer speakers are in a different room. Thanks for the reply.

  • Help! No output sound

    Hi,
I'm in an emergent situation where my Macbook have no output sound. It's a Macbook, but the new lines all call them Pros. Here is what happens:
    1. There is a Red Light inside the MIDI port, only in the one where the microphone sign is (the output one). I have never seen this red light before, but after a restart, it went out.
    2. I checked System Preference and it says no output control device even though the laptop itself DOES have built in microphone. And the funny thing is, when I restart it, it gives me the 'boo' sound, but when the OS loads and the GUI shows, no sound.
    3. I plug in an external microphone, the sound is there. But once, the external microphone is plugged out, the red light shows up again.
    Please help,
    Regards,
    Angela

I did a quick AHT, but funnily, it reports no problem. However, the system shows a 'built in input microphone', but no 'built in output microphone'; it only shows 'built in output'. It's quite terrifying, it works just yesterday, and now, I can't even find it in the system.
I did check Audio MIDI setup application, but the IAC driver is labeled red. I mean, what is wrong with this?

  • Output sound distortion when USB Mic Connected

    Hi everyone,
Really appreciate anyone’s help on this sound distortion problem.
I have been using the new 2014 iMac 27' for last 8 Months, bought Brand New, and recently updated to Yosemite. Everything worked fine including recording, until this update.
I'm using Blue Yeti USB Mic for recording, and few days after the update I was trying to record in GarageBand and the output sound (via headphone connected to USB MIc) started to distort and then suddenly dropped the bitrate/ sound and I could only hear some clicks. I reinstalled the GargeBand, still its the same distortion happens. The sound gets back to normal, only for few seconds, after I unplug the USB cable from the Mic device. And I tried changing the bit rate and again sounds starts to drop after few sec. This happens only when I connect the Blue Yeti USB Mic and sound output from the Mic itself. Same thing happens with iTunes as well. Output sound from Internal mic and speakers are working fine as normal.
I tried connecting the USB Mic to my Windows laptop and its working fine with the Cubase 5 without any problem. So the problem is with the output sound, when external Mic connected.
I don’t know the solution for this. Have checked on every single blog/ thread, sill couldn’t find the answer I’m looking for, to fix this.
It would be great if you have any kind of a solution for the same.

Nope. The larger buffer didn't work. What did work was running a cord out of the 1/4-inch jack from the direct box to a 1/4-to-1/8-inch adapter and then into the mic/line-in jack on my computer. I set GarageBand to use the built-in line-in and had no static problems. It's a stopgap until this gets fixed.

  • Media applications fail to output sound. [SOLVED]

The issue here seems to be that for some reason or another applications such as VLC, Nightingale, clementine and amarok fail to output sound while system sounds, flash media, and notification sounds from applications such as Skype and Thunderbird continue to work. With each of the music players respectfully there seems to be an error output that amounts to not being able to connect to the sound device. As nightingale is what I currently have installed, the error output is such when I attempt to play any sort of media.
Configured audiosink audiosink-bin is not working.

Every thing seems to be loaded correctly and speakertest -c 2 seems to be working. The problem I had last time was with flash blocking sound output from other programs, but this problem subsided after having correctly set my default with alsamixer. I began to have the problem of flash blocking other applications from outputting sound when a browser was open a couple of days ago, but this has somehow progressed to any media application failing to output sound at anytime regardless if a browser has been opened or not. I uninstalled flashplugin and now rely on the plugin packaged within chrome but the problem persists. Any suggestions? I have read the wiki on alsa and on the flash plugin and have searched around but have found nothing that addresses my problem or that I have not already implemented or tried.
EDIT: It seems that I have gotten vlc to start working again. The issue here seems to be that /etc/alsa.conf had been marked by pacman as /etc/alsa.conf.pacorig and renaming it and setting vlc to output directly to the default device instead of having set to default has gotten sound working for it again. It seems the only problem that remains and I have gotten this error is other applications and it is probably the problem behind XBMC not playing audio but the audiosink-bin is not working error is most likely the source of the additional problems. I will look into it and see if I get any reply in the meantime.
EDIT: Due to something beyond my intelligence it seems that nightingale now plays sound and can even do so with chrome and a youtube video open. I am guessing the problem lied in the gstreamer plugins and when I removed all of my orphaned dependencies that may have been what had done it, something may have been in conflict or maybe just from the couple of reboots I have had since then. I did reinstall the plugins but there was a package that was removed called smpeg and another called sdlmixer those may have had something to do with it. So the moral of this story is to remove orphans on a regular basis, which I have been doing but just got around to today. If anyone has any input, which I doubt at this point. I will mark this as solved

I fixed it (for now, at least!)
    I ran the below command:
    $ cat /proc/asound/cards
    0 [U0x46d0x804 ]: USB-Audio - USB Device 0x46d:0x804
USB Device 0x46d:0x804 at usb-0000:00:1a.0-1.2, high speed

    2 [NVidia ]: HDA-Intel - HDA NVidia
HDA NVidia at 0xfbd7c000 irq 17
Basically, my USB webcam, which also acts as a microphone, was being treated as my default sound card. I changed this by creating a file in /etc/modprobe.d with the following:
    options snd-hda-intel index=0
Which set my real sound card as default:
    $ cat /proc/asound/cards
    0 [MID ]: HDA-Intel - HDA Intel MID
HDA Intel MID at 0xf9ff8000 irq 47

USB Device 0x46d:0x804 at usb-0000:00:1a.0-1.2, high speed
The problem isn't ENTIRELY fixed. Skype's still being a bit buggy, but at least Chromium is now playing sound, including in Flash media. Strangely enough, after playing a Flash video (e.g. on YouTube), Skype's sound seems to fix itself if it's defunct.

  • ["SOLVED"] PulseAudio - some applications won't output sound sometimes

So, I have KDE 4 and PulseAudio installed, with VLC as Phonon's backend software.
After startup, I often find that Skype won't output sound at all for seemingly random periods of time. This also often happens (sometimes simultaneously, but not necessarily) to Chromium. Pavucontrol and the KDE audio mixer, don't show anything useful at all in terms of the output of Skype and Chromium, and messing with master output in Pavucontrol doesn't affect anything.
After a completely random period of time (usually a very long period of time), these applications start outputting sound again. It's very frustrating, and restarting the applications doesn't help whatsoever. While these two applications are affected, all other applications output sound perfectly.
I don't even know. I've searched, but I haven't found any similar problems documented elsewhere. Any advice?
    EDIT: Solved, for now.

  • External display sound delay

Hello all - Surprisingly I couldn't find this in searches on the forum, so looking for input. I've got an external monitor hooked up via firewire through an HDV deck. There's the expected sound delay (about 5 frames), but how do I get rid of it? Can I buy a video card to put in the G5 with analog outputs to take care of the transcoding delay? Or is there a setting to delay the audio like in Avid? Thanks!
    J

That's a better way to ask my question: How can I get video and audio to follow each other in sync to an external display and have both my computer and external monitor all play in sync?
Right now I'm monitoring audio strictly from computer line out speakers, and I'm monitoring video out through firewire via an HDV deck, so I understand why there is a delay. However, it's unrealistic for me to turn down my computer line out speakers and turn up my external monitor speakers every time I need to play back for clients.
I've tried fuddling with the Playback Controls Frame Offset, but it only delays my video playback on the computer, not the external monitor.
Surely there is a hardware solution for professional editors? A board I can purchase to install in the G5? I could throw a mixer into the mix for quick mute access, but not sure what hardware even to purchase to output from the computer for that. I'm accustomed to Avid hardware handling this, but I don't know where to find FCP hardware recommendations. Is this the right route?

  • Vocal comp I have recorded sounds delayed

    Hello everyone,
I need some help with delayed playback...
the audio sounds delayed and I am worried about the overall groove so I would like to have this thing clear before I can start mixing
I am sure that there must be a proper solution than just moving the track randomly on the timeline by ear....
    these are my current settings:
    Thanks a lot

Check the output settings in GarageBand's preferences > Audio/Midi pane.
And in the System Preferences > Sound  panel.
Also check the settings in Audio Midi Setup Utility.

  • Problem with sound delay from mic to speakers with quickplay on HP Pavilion dv5-1145ev

I have an HP Pavilion dv5-1145 ev. When I try to use karaoke with HP's quickplay there is a significant sound delay from the microphone to the speakers. I also noticed the same delay, even when I am recording my voice with other programs such as audacity. There is a voice delay too. I have windows vista and I have tried to change the settings of the sound from control panel, without any luck. Any suggestions please?

I have an HP Presario CQ61 that I bought to record my own music in tracks and it's useless to me because I have about a second delay from the mic to my recording program and headphones. You would think that with all the brainy knowlage Bill Gates and the computer industry has someone can come up with a downloadable fix for this problem. If I knew I would have this problem before I bought the thing I wouldn't have wasted my money.  If anyone finds a fix for this please let me know.

  • Help with timing, input from Daq, output sound

    Hi
    I am a student member of OSA, working on a laser listener project to be used in examples for high schools students. It is a pretty old and simple experiment but something I think students would be into. {any suggestions for other experiments anyone might have I would love to hear}
I read a voltage from a Daq off a reciever circuit, that signal is noisey so I filter it for the human voice range, 60Hz - 2000Hz. Then that filtered signal goes to the play waveform express VI. It works but the snag is I keep getting a "beeping" in the output sound, I believe this is from the loop cycling.  I have thought of something like a master/slave loops, storing the data in an array then waiting a sec or two and playing the sound from this data so I dont have to wait on the Daq to acquire new data. Any help or suggestions are greatly apprciated.
This is a rough version sorry about the mess. I think it should also be noted that if the "Time Duration" is larger that 0.02 then that makes the number of samples larger than what the Daq can handle.
Thank you very much in advance for all of the help and your time.

    Hi Jason,
I took a look at what is happening in the play waveform express VI and the issue may be related to starting/stopping the sound card every time the loop iterates, similar to what I suggested with the DAQmx VIs in my previous post. To look into the code behind an express VI, you should copy the express VI to another section of your code or to another VI completely, because once you show the block diagram for it, you will not be able to use the express VI configuration dialog anymore for that instance of the VI. Once you copy the play waveform express VI, right click on the copy and select "Open Front Panel." Then, navigate to the block diagram and keep opening the subVIs until you find the "Simple Write" VI (see below for a screenshot of this VI). Here, you will see that there is a "Sound Output configure" VI as well as a "Sound Output Clear" VI. Since these are within the while loop of your top level VI, the "beeping" in your output may be caused by the constant configuring and stopping of the sound card with these VIs. What I suggest is that you use the code in the express VI as an example to code your own sound output vi that is configured once outside the while loop and stopped once after the while loop. Hope this helps!

  • Trying to Output Sound to Speakers and TV Simultaneously on H8-1360t

    Hi everyone -
I have an HP H8-1360t with an AMD HD 7570 video card, running Windows 7 64-bit.  I have speakers hooked up to the on-board sound via a standard 3.5mm cable.  I run DVI to my monitor and HDMI to my TV.  I am trying to get sound to go to the speakers and the TV simultaneously, without having to keep swapping the default playback device.  I tried the following that I found online:
    Open Sound panel
Select Speakers as the default playback device
    Go to the "Recording" tab
Right click and enable "Show Disabled Devices"
A recording device called "Wave Out Mix", "Mono Mix" or "Stereo Mix" (this was my case) should appear
Right click on the new device and click "Enable"
Right click on the new device and click "Set as Default Device"
Double click on the new device to open the Properties window
    Go to the "Listen" tab
Click on the "Listen to this device" checkbox
Select your HDMI device from the "Playback through this device" list
This worked the first time I tried it and I was getting audio through both the PC speakers and from the TV.  Since then, it no longer works and I am only get audio via one or the other, depending on what device I select as my default.  It's more of an annoyance than anything else - having to manually switch between output devices every time I want to watch something on my TV instead of my monitor.  I assumed I could get dual audio output and simply not turn on the PC speakers when I wanted to watch something on the TV and it worked the first time!  I don't understand why it is no longer working.  Thoughts?
    TIA!

    Thanks for the reply!
I believe that the answer is answer is yes to both questions - it defintely worked the first time.  I'm not sure if I tried it on the first reboot or not but it did not work the next time I tried it.  As far as what may have changed - I have no clue?!?  I do not see that the 7570 or the Beats audio had any updates.  According to Device Manager, I am running the latest IDT High Definition Audio CODEC driver.
i did notice a couple of things tonight.  The video I used as a test the other day, that had audio and video going simultaneously on both displays, is displaying video on both the monitor and TV today but no audio on the TV.  That said, when I open up the Sound control panel, and click on the AMD HDMI Output, right-click, and click "test", I do get test "beeps" through my TV (while the audio from my video is running through my PC speakers).  So, it appears that it is indeed capable of outputting sound to both the PC speakers (via the onboard sound) and the TV (via the HDMI) - just not the same sound anymore!  Another thing I noticed is that when I go to the Recording tab, the Stereo Mix selection is noted as the Default Device, and I can watch the "meter" on the right move up and down in sync with the volume of the video I am playing back - only there is no sound via the TV.
As usual, when I switch to the HDMI Audio Output as the Default Device, the sound plays fine on my TV.
    This is strange...

  • Ipod touch no longer charges with USB nor does it output sound through the connector

2 problems after the latest iOS update:
    (1) my 3rd generation iPod Touch no longer changes when connected to the computer through the USB connection.  It says that the device is not supported for connection through USB.  My computer is running Snow Leopard and all software is up to date.
    (2) it also does not output sound through my clock radio nor through the built-in ipod connection in my MINI.
This all worked great until the latest iOS update.  Something broke in the latest update.
    anyone else seeing this issue?

You can try the standard fixes:
    - Reset. Nothing is lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory defaults/new iPod.
If still problem then the iOS broke full compatibility. you have to then wait for either Apple to fix the problem in an iOS update or for Honda to fix it via a firmware update/
    Have you contacted Honda?

I have a 5G iPod in an Apple dock, connected to my TV using a Monster audio cable and an S-Video cable. For some reason, it only outputs sound during videos or a photo slide show - not at all for music only playback. I'm baffled! Any idea why? It's a Panasonic plasma, and I've tried three different inputs. None work for music, but video is fine.

The iPhone 4, unlike iPod, doesn't ask you to set for PAL or NTSC.  In fact, in the SETTINGS/Video menu it only asks if you want to "Start Playing From Beginning", "Closed Captioning" and "Home Sharing".  I was surprised it had no settings like the iPod at all.

  • Anybody seen this issue where sharing an image to Twitter results in a very small image?

Running iPhoto 9.4.2 on 10.8.3, though this has happened before. I've selected a photo in iPhoto, chosen Share -> Twitter and published it. The resulting tweet has a tiny image attached to it. Example: https://twitter.com/iTFDB/status/314935389225897
