Launch the Font Book application and validate all fonts. You must select the fonts in order to validate them. See the built-in help and this support article for instructions. If Font Book finds any issues, resolve them.
From the application's menu bar, select
File ▹ Restore Standard Fonts...
You'll be prompted to confirm, and then to enter your administrator login password.
Boot in safe mode to rebuild the font caches. Boot again as usual and test.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. In that case, ask for instructions.
Also note that if you deactivate or remove any built-in fonts, for instance by using a third-party font manager, the system may become unstable.

I have Microsoft Office for Mac 2011.  I only have Word, Excel, and Powerpoint.  I do not have Outlook.
When I open up any one of the three (Word, Excel, or Powerpoint), i get the following message:
"There is a problem with the Office database. To use the database, verify that you have the correct permissions or rebuild it using the Database Utility.
The Office database stores your personal information, such as the Scrapbook and Outlook messages and contacts. To learn how to verify or change your permissions, click Cancel, and then in the Outlook Help, click Go Online, search
for “database permissions” and follow the  instructions. To rebuild the database, click Rebuild.’’
I then click on Rebuild and get the following response:
"There is a problem with Office Database.
Office might be unable to access the database or the database file might be damaged.  Without the database, thou might be unable to use the Scrapbook and other features that store your personal information.
To rebuild the database, open Microsoft Office 2011 / Office, and then open the Microsoft Database Unitity.  For more information, open the Database Utility application, and on the Help menu, click Database Utility Help."
Then, when I try to rebuild the database, i get the following info.

    step 4 of 5 - recovering data ..

I even tried to create a new identity but it won't do that either.  I get the response:

I will need exact steps, so please do not leave anything out.

    Hi,
You'd probably try repairing disk permissions first, then try again. Follow these steps:
In the Finder, click Go, and then select
Home. Open the Applications folder. Open the Utilities folder.
In the column on the left side of the Disk Utility window, select your Macintosh HD.
    Click the First Aid tab.
    Click Repair Disk Permissions.
After the repair is completed, restart the computer.

I'm trying to install Microsoft Office for Mac 2011. Halfway through the installation, the MacBook Air tells me that I must close Safari for the installation to continue. As far as I can tell, Safari IS closed. I can't discover any process that will close it any more than it is now. Installer won't let me shut down or re-start the computer because it (Installer) is still running.
    What am I missing?

The MS installer seems to think Safari is active so try the following...
Right-click on the Safari icon in the Dock and if applicable, select Quit.
    or
Try Utilities > Activity Monitor and look for Safari in the Process Name column.  If present, highlight Safari and then click the Quit Process icon.

installing microsoft office for mac and getting prompt for installer password.  i have put in apple id password and admin password and not working, i have also reset my admin password 3 times and it is still not working? how do i get past this?

You don't use your Apple ID or its password to install anything on your Mac. You use the admin account's name and password.
Use the name and password you last entered when resetting them. The "name" you use is not the short name of the admin account folder.
For example. If you create an admin account of John Smith, the short name given to that account's folder will be johnsmith. So when an app requests an admin name and password to install something, the admin name you enter is John Smith, not johnsmith.

I own, or should I say have owned, several Apple products. Including a new MBP.
    I also use Windows.

And just how is suggesting to remove Lion and to go back to Snow Leopard not helping the OP in his quest to make his already owned and paid for MS Office software work? If it is isn't broken stop trying to fix it. Snow Leopard is a fine OS. Lion is still in Beta, only Apple hasn't told anyone. And yes I run Lion on my new MBP but I also have a partition with Snow Leopard on it.

  • Microsoft Office for Mac a good installation?

Have given a grand daughter a 15 inch RetMBKPro running OS 10.9.4 for college.
Is Microsoft Office for Mac a recommended piece of software to install?
    Is it supported by Microsoft?
Are there any known problems with its use in a MAc?

Depending on how deeply she'll be getting into the vast range of features MS Office has and/or how complete file compatibility has to be with anyone else, you might also consider LibreOffice. It's a pretty full-featured alternative to MS Office, with the advantage that it's free.

  • How to help my friend install Microsoft Office for Mac 2008

Hello, I have a friend in North Carolina whose mom recently got a MacBook Pro running OS X Mountian Lion (10.8), he will be coming on to join this discussion after I post it. He needs Microsoft Office for his mom and I just happened to have purchase 3 licenses (two of which I have already utilized). While talking to him over a Facetime call, I walked him through the steps of getting the free office for mac 2008 package from download.com (which seemed kind of sketchy). While the download actually looked legitimate, we ran the installer and it gave some kind of weird error message that said something like "Could not be installed onto Macintosh HD because the Mac OS X is not on that parition" (I'm paraphrasing my friend will contribute the actual message). Could someone please walk us through an easier (and preferably more secure) process? We just need to get to the point where I can give him my last license key. Thanks!
    YraYra

You will have to check with Microsoft but I think what you are doing is illegal. The 3 license pack I think means 1 user 3 computers, not 2 users 3 computers.
You might have better luck posting on the Office for Mac forum. http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/mac?auth=1

  • Is OSX lion compatible with microsoft office for mac 2008

Can anybody out there please give me a definitive answer to this question: Is OSX Lion compatible with Microsoft Office for Mac 2008? The technical support people of both Apple and Microsoft could not provide me wth a useful answer to a question that must interest hundreds of thousands of people, if not millions. I don't want to download the new OS and then encounter nasty problems.

Yes. The only problem you could face, is if you want to reinstall MS Office 2008 on Lion - this is not possible, because the installer runs on Rosetta, which is no longer supported in Lion. But if you already have Office installed, there should be absolutely no problems.

  • Is mountain lion compatible with old (2004) version of microsoft office for MAc?

I have heard that Mountain Lion is not compatible with old (2004) version of microsoft office for MAc. Is that true?

... unless, like me, you open up an uber-important Excel 2004 file in Excel 2011 and get the following dialog box which leads to a trashed Chart, which I need access to EVERY WEEK:
Can't say I've ever seen such error messages, and I've opened lots of files created back in OS 8. Also many more much older than that from Windows 95 and even MS-DOS.
Lucky for you; unlucky for me that an important Excel 2004 Chart gets corrupted when opened in Excel 2011!
I suspect the problem is in the conversion routine that Microsoft added to Office 2011 to update Excel 2004 files.  How conversant are you historically with converting Excel 2004 files that contain charts to Excel 2011?  Because your experience with OS 8, Windows 95 and even MS-DOS has no relevance on this issue.
    Kurt Lang wrote:
You will notice, Kurt, that I based my advice to the OP as "if you are unable or unwilling to upgrade to Microsoft Office 2011..."
Yes, I saw it. But if everyone did what you would expect with your statement, no one would suggest upgrading to Office 2011. Besides, you're the one who stated "unable or unwilling", not the OP.
Are you always this argumentative, or is this my lucky day?
Many people suggest upgrading to Office 2011. I do it frequently in my other "workarounds" type of answers to the Rosetta in Lion/Mountain problem.  I chose not to offer that solution here, and as I expected, someone else, namely you, did!
The problem was that you finished your suggestion with this comment: "Particularly when it isn't really necessary."  Since this statement was not true in my case (it IS necessary for me to continue to use my important Excel 2004 file as well as some other historical files I have; and conceivably could be important to the OP), I posted the correction.
You also made the suggestion that: "...the cost of VM software isn't that much less than just upgrading to Office 2011." While certainly true in the vacuum of the OP asking specifically about Word 2004; when the OP becomes aware that his complete library of PPC applications will fail in Mountain Lion, your suggestion about the relative cost to upgrade may no longer be as relevant.
Lastly: Yes, I commonly state to similar OP's that if they are "unable" (because, for example, they may also have conversion problems with Office 2011, Appleworks 6, Freehand or other programs) or "unwilling" (perhaps they just cannot afford to upgrade all of their PPC apps at this time), that here is an alternative that will keep the status quo available to them, and buy them some more time to consider their options while continuing to use Lion/Mountain Lion and their PowerPC apps.
Is the relevance of my post to the OP's problem (and your reply to my solution) sufficiently clear for you now?

  • Microsoft Office for Mac open recent File menu option causing AFP to crash

    Hi all,
We have an Xserve running Mac OS X Server Leopard 10.5.8. The Xserve hosts three file shares for about 60 users. Our network is 99% Mac based running mostly 10.5.8 with a few 10.6.x. We have historically over the past several years had the AFP service become unreliable and crash frequently. Late last week the AFP service crashes constantly. The quick solution to getting it up and running is to delete the AFP.conf file in /etc.
We have troubleshot one cause of AFP crashing to the Open Recent... File menu option in Microsoft Office for Mac applications. That is, through some amount (haven't been able to narrow it down to how much) of opening documents on the share via the Open Recent menu the AFP service will crash.
Here's what's happening in the AppleFileServer .crash file:

Our solution is to have all our users turn off the open recent option in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Not an ideal solution but it may get the AFP service running "good enough."
Has anyone had an experience like this before or can anyone duplicate the AFP service crashing when trying to open documents on a share via the open recent menu? Any other ideas?
    Thanks

    Update.
I have been able to consistently reproduce a problem where the AFP service will crash if a file that a user has an alias to is moved to a folder and the user is denied access to .
    1. On your Mac create an alias to a file or folder, that you have access to, that is stored on a share served via AFP. The alias can be in the Places section of a Finder window, on the Desktop, or anywhere an alias can be created. Lets call what the alias points to the target.
    2. Move the target to a folder on the AFP share and deny the user or group Read & Write access to that folder.
    3. Try accessing the target via the alias created in step 1.
    The AFP service should crash.
Can anyone reproduce this crash scenario too?

In the box with the disk came the product key, have put it in and it doesnt work. Please help..x

unfortunately - you can not.  you can't even buy outlook by itself at microsoft's own website.
does it have to be outlook?  maybe you can get away with using something else that's outlook compatible.
how about trying Thunderbird for Mac OS?
or maybe you can call apple and let them know you purchase the wrong version - they might give you a break and just pay the difference for the home and business version.

  • Microsoft Office for Mac questions

    Hi,
I've just bought Microsoft Office for Mac (student teacher version) for my new 20" iMac. I seem to remember reading somewhere that I need to uninstall the test version that comes with the iMac before installing the "real" software.
Is this true, & if so, how do I do it?
Does it install fairly easily or is it problematical?
Will it be available to the 4 user a/c's we have set up (i.e. not just the main a/c) or do I have to do anything to achieve this?
    Thanks.

In the MS Office folder is a folder named Addtional Tools. Inside that folder is the uninstaller. You must uninstall the Trial version (if you have installed it) before installing the normal version of Office. If you have never installed the Trial version then simply drag the entire Trial folder to the Trash and delete it. Then install your normal version of Office.
Any application installed in the Applications folder is available to any user unless specifically restricted in the account.

  • Will Microsoft Office For Mac V.X run on Lion?

Need to determine if I have to buy the latest version of Microsoft Office For Mac.  Would prefer to use my V.X.  I am upgrading to Lion for iCloud.

However, Office 2008, which does run in Lion, MUST BE INSTALLED BEFORE you upgrade to Lion, because its installation program has Rosetta-required PPC code.
Another issue is that many people with legacy MS Office data files are experiencing severe problems with translation of the legacy files by MS Office 2008 or 2011.
For example, I must access a file once a week that I created in MS Excel 2004 and its graphs are scrambled by Excel 2011.  I continue to access it with Excel 2004 in Snow Leopards installed in Parallels 7 in Lion:
If you decide to continue to use your Office v.X, full installation instructions for Snow Leopard (and Rosetta) in Parallels 7 in Lion are here:
