Mid 2010 15" MBP i5 A1286 POWER ISSUE-PLEASE HELP-

The MBP works fine when mains connected but the only issue is every time I take the charger out it shuts down on me!!! So I have checked with a multitester & looks good the only thing i find hard to check for power is the battery itself as its hard to get a good connection, also I took to local Apple store & they checked with a new battery but said its still same issue so the guy disconnected nearly all the connecters off to check if they causing issue & he said now the battery is charging.
So they still have the laptop to do further tests etc, but I’m not sure what could be the problem hear as maybe there is some component which is bad so the battery’s not charging or what else could be the issue please help & advice as I’m really confused as if it was something to do with the logic board then surely it would not even charge even after checking with the multitester or like Apple genius done by disconnecting other components...
ANY HELP OR ADVICE WOULD BE HELPFULL,
THANKS GUYS

THANKS FOR THE HELP GUYS!!! BEEN AROUND 5 DAYS & NOT ONE PERON HAS HELPED...
BUT YEAH THANKS AGAIN...
WASTE OF TIME THIS IS...

• Installing Windows XP to a Mid 2010 15" MBP. Worst nightmare ever. Help!!

Alright.
I've read through about 300 posts in this forum and I can't find anything that is simple, easy to read, and works.
Here's the deal. I have a 15" MacBook Pro that I got mid 2010 brand new. I have a Windows XP Service Pack 2 disc. I have a Snow Leopard install disc.
I run boot camp assistant, gave myself a hefty 50 gigs of space for my XP partition, install XP. Once XP finishes installing, I install the Boot Camp program and drivers from the SL disc.
All should be peachy, right? That is pretty much all the help I've gathered from reading through posts here.
Now, in Device Manager, pretty much everything important has a yellow exclamation point next to it: Ethernet Controller, Audio Device on High Definition Audio Bus (x4), Bluetooth USB Host Controller, Network Controller, PCI Data Acquisition and Signal Processing Controller, SM Bus Controller, Video Controller (VGA Compatible)
I tried repairing the drivers using the SL disc. Nope. No worky.
The irony of XP asking me to connect to the internet to properly install network drivers is not lost on me.
I tried downloading updates from Apple support, Bootcamp Update, Bootcamp new versions, etc. Every time I run them I get an error that says "Program too big to fit in memory." And every time my urge to throw my laptop through a window increases.
Believe me, I wouldn't be installing anything Microsoft related if it wasn't necessary for work, but it is a must in the situation I am in now. For all I care, once I finish with this project I will burn my XP disc like Hendrix did with his guitar.
Please, please, please...if you have a succinct explanation of how to at least get this piece of crap OS on the internet, help me. I beg of you. Thank you.

Download XP SP3 combine updater from MS and burn it onto a CD. Install SP3 right after XP SP2 is installed.
In case you get an out of disk space error while installing SP3, you will need to create a regedit key to specify the boot directory is the C:\ drive:
1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
2. Go to: HKEYLOCALMACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup
3. On the Edit menu, point to New, and click String Value.
4. Type BootDir and press ENTER.
5. Right-click BootDir and select Modify.
6. Type C:\
After SP3 is done, restart, then insert Snow Leopard disc to install the drivers.
Good luck!

• G580 power issue, please help

Hey, currently refuses to power up.
There is a light to say the battery is getting power when it is plugged in, but pressing the power button give no responce at all. No fan, no moniter, no lights. Does anyone have a solution or do I have a paperweight now?

Hi ShouAS,
Sorry to welcome you to the Community under these circumstances.
This is a long shot, unplug it, take out the battery and push and hold the power button for 10 seconds. Do that at least three times, then plug in just the ac adapter, (not the battery) and see if it starts.

• Power Issue- Please help

Yesterday my power cord stopped working. I was able to move it around so that my computer would charge when it was at a certain position. This led me to believe that there is a broken wire or short in the cord. I purchased a new charger today and it worked immediately and continuously for at least four hours. Then, the new charger stopped working. Frustrated, I substituted the old, broken power cord. Again, this old cord works fine when positioned a certain way. This makes no sense at all to me. I know that the new cord that I purchased today was the correct one for my Macbook. Does anyone have any ideas? I can keep using the broken cord for the time being, but I'm afraid it will eventually stop working completely.

I can imagine an old cord breaking down and fraying at the connections such that it no longer works except in certain positions. You should return your new defective cord, get a good one and that should solve the problem.

• Mid 2010 17" MBP video problems

I have a mid 2010 17" MBP that has been having the same video issues as the 2011 MBP But, I guess im out of luck getting mine repaired?

As I said any brand will work just as well as any other brand, so the brand is irrelevant which you buy. All types of RAM are known to work. None any better than any other. This includes whatever brands Apple uses. As long as the RAM has a lifetime warranty and you buy from a vendor with a good return policy then you are in good shape.
If you look for the research you will find that tests of different brands of RAM demonstrated that the brand is unimportant when choosing a product.
I've never purchased brand name RAM in over 20 years for more than 30 Macs I've owned, and I've never had a problem. I happen to purchase mine from Data Mem.

• How do I enable the backlit keyboard on my mid 2010 13" MBP?

How do I enable the backlit keyboard on my mid 2010 13" MBP? running Windows 8.1? I DO have the latest Apple Support Files downloaded and installed. Everything works except for the illumination of the keyboard and the brightness controls. OS X version is Mavericks.

windows8.1 dont have official support so if it works with win8 then likely it will again when official support for win8.1 comes

• Trackpad Issue - Please Help!

Hi there,
Hope you can help me out here.
I've recently purchased a 15" i7 Macbook pro. The machine is but 3 weeks old &, of course, very well looked after.
A few days ago, the built-in trackpad started behaving eratically. Cursor moving by itself, not responding to touch, clicking and opening things involuntarily. Not good at all. Many users seem to have had this exact same issue.
These problems seemed to miraculously stop after a few re-boots and possibly a software update? I really couldn't tell you what resolved the problem.
Unfortunately I now have a totally different problem.
There is a thin, possibly 8 to 10mm horizontal strip across the centre of the trackpad that no longer responds to touch. If I move my finger from the botom of the trackpad upwards (or vice versa), the cursor will stop momentarily as it passes over the horizontal strip. The buttons are fine and the rest of the trackpad is fine. For the moment, I've increased the cursor acceleration so that I can at least navigate round the screen with a smaller area of the trackpad. USB magic mouse seems to work fine.
If anyone else has experienced this &/or found a solution for this issue, please help me out here. I have rifled through endless threads about MBP trackpad issues with little success & do not live close to an apple store/genius bar.
This is a 3 week old machine that cost me a small fortune. To be getting software/hardware issues so early on in it's lifespan is really rather worrying for the future.
Appreciate your help here.
J

I'm not sure what caused this, but I extended my lunch break and drove the machine down to the Westfield apple store. I didn't have an appointment with the Genius Bar but I managed to persuade one of the staff to speak to a technician in the workshop. She came back into the store and told me that they had replacement trackpads and that , considering the machine was only 3 weeks old, the technicians kindly sandwiched the repair into their timetable at zero cost. 2 Hours later, I now have a perfectly functioning trackpad/machine.
I can't thank them enough.
My only gripe is that I couldn't speak to a technician to find out what the problem was, how they resolved it or what causes these issues for future reference. Understanding why these problems occur often helps to build your own framework of understanding. Most of the threads i've read about trackpad issues are largely unresolved with people only speculating the problem/solution.
The initial issue I had with the trackpad's erratic behaviour seemed to be a well known problem that many are associating with a trackpad firmware update. Unless by pure coincidence I had an immediate & major hardware fault after it, which is unlikely, my personal guess is that the two issues were related.

• My 2nd generation Airport Extreme very slow via wireless (5 and belows mbps) wired over 20. Please help!

My 2nd generation Airport Extreme very slow via wireless (5 and belows mbps) wired over 20. Please help! What could it be?

It is very possible that you may have some form of Wi-Fi interference nearby that is preventing your AEBSn from providing a clean RF signal on the 2.4 GHz band.
I suggest you perform a simple site survey, using utilities like iStumbler, or AirRadar to determine potential areas of interference, and then, try to either eliminate or significantly reduce them where possible.

Hi Venu,
We can't add authorisation objects on Individual servers.We need to add authorisations on BWD ie Dev system and transport to BWI QUA system.This is the Process we need to follow as per our rule set.
So,As the problem mentioned above if i add some auth. objects on BWD DEV system and transport it to BWI QUA system,it is getting transported Successfully to BWI,but the auth.objects what i have added on BW DEV system is not found on BW QUA system.
What could be the problem for that,Is that the problem with transports like TP error or is it related with some tables of auth.objects...................
Could u please analyse the problem and tell me the solution for this..........

• Headerrenderer issue -Please help

Headerrenderer issue -Please help
hi
I have a datagrid and I am doing a custom sorting on the grid(by getting data from DB).
I achieve this by capturing the headerrelease event of datagrid .In thee venthandler I will query from DB and do event.preventdefault to prevent standard grid sorting.
Now I need to display my own custom ascending/descending arrows in the header.i have created an header renderer for this,
In the headerrenderer I am lsitening to the headerrelease event of datagrid and in the eventlistener, as per the sortfield, i am trying to make the sort arrow visible/invisible.
But somehow making the sort arrows visible/invisible is not working.The initial arrow works fine.it is shown the correct column(Name) as done in the init() method.
The eventhandler is invoked on clicking the column headers and all the alerts are shown.
Please see the headerrenderer code below and help me.(code is not complete only the relevant part is included)
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?><mx:HBox
xmlns:mx="http://www.adobe.com/2006/mxml" width="100%" height="100%" horizontalScrollPolicy="off" creationComplete="init()" implements="mx.controls.listClasses.IDropInListItemRenderer">
public function init():void{
headerLabel = dataField.label;
_dataGrid.addEventListener(DataGridEvent.HEADER_RELEASE,sortChanged,false);
if(_dataField.localeCompare('Name')==0)asc.visible=true; }
private function sortChanged(e:DataGridEvent){
var dg:DataGrid=e.currentTarget asDataGrid;
varcolumn:DataGridColumn = DataGridColumn(e.currentTarget.columns[e.columnIndex]);if(_dataField.localeCompare(e.dataField)==0)
if(asc.visible ||(!asc.visible&&!desc.visible))
Alert.show(
'in..');
asc.visible=false;
desc.visible=true;
else if(desc.visible){
asc.visible= true;
desc.visible=
false;
else{
asc.visible=
false;
desc.visible=
false;
]]>
</mx:Script>
<mx:Text text="{_headerLabel}" />
<mx:Image source="{ascIcon}" id='asc' visible="false">
<mx:Image source="{descIcon}" id='desc' visible="false"/>
</mx:HBox>

I got the solution!!
i need to assign the headerrendereer to the columns dynamically inorder for this to work:

• Is this HD suitable for a mid-2010 15" MBP?

The 512GB HD which came with my mid-2010 15" MacBook Pro appears to have developed some problems. The machine auto-restarts on its own more often and takes a long time to go to sleep when I close the lid. I have replaced the RAM (4GB to 8GB) about 6 months ago and this helped, but now I'm thinking the HD is more of an issue. I generally keep the disc 20-25% empty, for performance, so I'm sure it's not just swap space.
Would this drive be suitable to replace my internal drive? http://www.ebuyer.com/223759-seagate-750gb-momentus-internal-hard-drive-st975042 0as
I saw this page but I'm not in the USA so would want a UK supplied: http://bit.ly/16aTDvz
Any opinions or advice would be greatly welcomed. Though I replaced the RAM myself, I'd prefer someone else to replace the HD, though I'm not sure Apple will do this. I've booked an appointment at the local Genius bar, though due to waiting times, that's not for another 5 days.
P.S: I don't know if this would have any effect, but I'm thinking of having the battery replaced as well. I believe Apple will do that for 100GBP.

Yes that HDD is compatible with your MBP. I believe that Apple will only replace a HDD that you purchase from them and that will probably be at a cost that will substantially more than if you did it your self. Installation instructions can be found on the iFixit.com web site and videos on the OWC web site as well as the User manual. It is not a difficult tack and I would urge you to do it yourself and save some money.
Battery replacement is a separate issue and that should be done by Apple.
Ciao.

• Mid 2010 macbook pro that has sleeping issues

I have a mid 2010 macbook pro that has had problems sleeping and the screen goes randomly black but does not put the actual computer to sleep and you can still see and move the cursor. It seems like tons of people have had the same issue. I recently updated the software to mountain lion but it did not help. The problem is when I close the lid, it does not go to sleep and wastes tons of battery or goes black while i am working on it. HELP!

Order a new battery.

• Macbook Pro (17-inch, mid-2010, i5, stock config) freezing -- Nvidia issue?

Hi there--
I have a fully stock-configured (no mods, no hard drive tweaks, etc.) Macbook Pro (17-inch, mid 2010, i5 model). It's only 3 months old. Running 10.6.4, everything updated and NO peripherals connected...
Anyhow, I was working at Starbucks yesterday morning and the system froze for no reason. Was doing semi-heavy workload with Photoshop CS5 and iTunes going and Safari downloading. Mouse would freeze in-place, iTunes starts stuttering in a loop. I waited, but system remained "frozen" -- only thing I can do at this point is shutdown via the power button.
I powered back up and system froze at the spinning progress indicator that you see on boot-up . I shutdown, powered back up... was able to work for about 10 minutes and same system freeze. I powered down for two hours, powered up, and same thing happened again.
*I've documented these freeze ups via video.* See my Youtube playlist, and the videos titled "crash" here (videos are encoded at 720p -- so click option for more clarity):
http://www.youtube.com/viewplaylist?p=38CDEF9C98B96BCE
I've also screen capped the crash logs which make me think there is something wrong with the video components of this machine. A whole lotta "Nvidia" related language.
*See screencaps here:*
http://www.flickr.com/photos/hildie/sets/72157624689980753/
Does anyone have experience analyzing crash logs, and can tell me what this might be about?
Took it to Genius Bar (Apple Store @ Beverly Center, Los Angeles) early yesterday evening. They were nice, but didn't offer any clear theories other than they think there is something wrong when the system switches from the Intel on-board graphics to the Nvidia graphics. They took the system from me and said they would "check it out for a couple days" and get back to me.
I'm frustrated because I run an extremely clean system (system has fresh OS install only a month ago), and not used to mysterious hardware issues hampering my workflow. Especially when I'm 90% done with updating my design portfolio and desperately need to get back to work!
PS - I tried the latest EFI update, and the issue was still happening after the update.
Thanks.
[email protected]

Your frustration is very understandable. It sounds like a hardware issue of some sort. The AHT does not test everything, so it will not necessarily find every possible hardware issue. Apple has a more sophisticated hardware test they can run, and often hardware issues may not show up until the machine is heated up. What they probably want to do is to try to reproduce the freeze and then run the test to see what is wrong.
You can run the cleanest system possible, and still be beset by a hardware problem, which can only be solved by replacing the faulty parts. Here's hoping that the Apple guys can discover what is wrong and fix it for you.
Hardware problems can be intermittent and hard to find. If they can't make it freeze and therefore don't find anything, then the next step would be to use it at the Apple Store until it freezes up and then give it to them to evaluate.
Good luck!

• What is the correct way to transfer data from old hard drive to new Crucial SSD on a mid 2010 13" MBP

I just bought an Crucial M550 256GB for my mid 2010 MBP. And I'm not clear on the data transfer instructions.
1) it came with Acronis instalation kit with a blank CD and a usb cable. I'm not sure what this CD is used for?
2) is it best to install the SSD with a fresh OSX download and then just use time machine to load all my previous settings?
3) or do I partition the SSD before I install it in the MBP and transfer using a clone?
Not sure what to do here...

Well, I am not familiar with the Crucial kit you got - you might want to ask them about that blank CD...... however, I did install an SSD and this is what I did:
I ordered a kit from OWC which included an external USB hard drive enclosure and tools. When it arrived, I first installed it in the external enclosre, hooked it to my MBP and then used CarbonCopyCloner to make a full bootable clone of my system on the new SSD after formatting it to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and the GUID partition scheme. I then uninstalled the internal, installed the SSD in its place (following the install video availabe at OWC) and booted up - that was it. I installed the old internal drive into the external enclosure for an instantaneous bootable cbackup.

• Does the Mac mini mid-2010 have an active PFC power supply?

I'm about to buy a UPS unit to run my NAS, and I'd like to connect my Mac mini to it as well. Does the Mac mini mid-2010 model have an active PFC (power factor correction) PSU (power supply unit)?
I've read that if it does (as the Dell XPS series do), then one of the cheaper UPS units won't work because those typically have modified/simulated sine wave outputs (you'll only notice when the power is out and the UPS is feeding power from its battery). It would mean I'd have to buy one of the more expensive UPS units like APC Smart-UPS SC620 or CyberPower CP1000PFCLCD.
I can't seem to find any resources that explain this. Please?

FWIW, I use one of these:
http://www.cyberpowersystems.com/products/ups-systems/soho-ups/cp425slg.html?sel ectedTabId=overview&imageI=#tab-box
for my HTPC setup. I have a 2010 Mini with a couple of USB drives plugged
into it, my 42" Samsung LCD TV, cable modem, cable box, and an Airport Extreme
Base Station running off of the backup power ports (not my 5.1 receiver for obvious
power reasons). With all on, I get enough time to gracefully power down the Mini with
time to spare when power goes out. When not watching TV or listening to music,
the cable modem and AEBS can run a long time during a power outage.
I have had this setup for around 2 years and have had no ill effects on any of
the gear and I do periodically have everthing powered then yank the AC
cord to cycle the battery.
