Mid 2010 MacBook Pro extremely slow
Hi! I have a mid-2010 MacBook Pro,which suddenly decided to start moving at snail speed for me. Applications take 5 minutes to open and when they do, they usually crash and I have to force quit. Finder runs pretty smooth but it is also slower than it used to be.
I have:
4GB Ram
500GB capacity hardrive, 173GB available
I have booted in safe mode, done both a PRAM and SMC reset, is there anything else I can try before I spend a ton of money getting it fixed?
Thanks in advance, and sorry for any typos, I am on mobile.
Assume the boot drive is dying and have a extra copy of your user files on another regular external drive in addition to any TimeMachine or bootable clone you may have.

If you want us to help you further and possibly pinpoint the cause please provide as much information in this next user tip back on this thread.

For instance we have no idea what operating system version your using.
What do you mean by snail speed? Do you see spinning beach balls or is there a runaway process, is the machine hot?
Slow booting, loading programs or slow writing to the drive? Slow online only?
Thanks.

Wi-Fi Slow for Mid-2010 MacBook Pro in Clamshell Mode
'd like to add my experience the posts which I have see regarding slow speeds in clamshell. I have a mid-2010 Macbook Pro 13 and when I first attempted to use it with an external monitor, keyboard and mouse - I too experienced significant slowing of the wi-fi speed. About 3 months ago, we swapped our existing router (non-Apple) for an Airport Extreme. That seems to have somehow cured the problem. While this does not address the issue with a 2008 product, I'd be interested to hear if anyone else has similar experience and/or if this potentially corrects the problem for other current model (or earlier model) Unibody owners. I hope that this isn't something that might evaporate with a software update someday in the future.

Reset your NVRAM and test to see if that resolves your issues. Typically that will resolve video, volume, startup disk selection, and kernel panic issues.

Mid 2010 macbook pro slow to sleep. No print queu issues.
Hey everyone! My Mid 2010 macbook pro slow is slow to go to sleep. I have read several community forums and I've checked for old print jobs (which seems to be a common issue) and have found none. I've also reset all printers and jobs. Anyways, it takes 35 to 60 seconds to go sleep (until fan/harddrive turns off/I see blinking white light). This slow sleep occurs even with a complete fresh install of Mavericks, and even after installing a new SSD. I am honestly at a loss.
I did the "pmset -g log" command and I have found two reoccurring things that I think might be the reason (though I don't really understand it fully). I commonly see "TimedOut InternalPreventSleep "com.apple.powermanagement.darkwakelinger" 00:00:15" commonly and "PreventUserIdleSystemSleep "Address Book Source Sync" 00:00:30". I have bolded both of these below:

The only observations are that the backup drive is deemed too small and the quite long list of diagnostic reports dated between Jan 18, 2015 (which I believe is the day I upgraded to Yosemite) & today the latest Yosemite update was installed on Jan 28, 2015
Any further assistance will be appreciated -
Macbook Pro Extremely Slow All Of A Sudden, Wiped Completely and Problem Persists
My 2012 Macbook Pro has slowed down to nearly a crawl in just about everything I try to do, espescially with anything that utilizes the internet. Activity Moniter initially revealed the issue to be the Kernal_Task proccess using too much memory as well as com.apple.finder. Also, Spotlight was indexing constantly until I disabled my disk from being accesed by it within the privacy tab of Spotlight Preference. The spinning beach ball of death has appeared more times in the past few days then I have ever seen in the entire year I've had my Macbook Pro.
I literally tried everything that I could find. I've done everything from resetting the Pram and the other thing (I forgot the name but when you hold down four keys at once during start up). I've tried killing proccesses, rebooting my mac several times, closing out programs, deleting all applications, just about eveything you can think of. Safari, Google Chrome, and Firefox were all extremely slow. Attemping to verify disk permissions or repair failed because of the sheer amount of time it was taking. I let the computer sit for an entire day and it seemed to make little to no progress in repairing the disk. I even booted the computer in Safe Mode and it was stil performing poorly.
The issue is NOT Hard Drive space on my Macbook. I know this because it was working perfectly fine and then all of sudden started behaving like this. All of these issues ultimately led to me doing something many others wouldn't, WIPING MY ENTIRE MAC AND RESTORING FROM FACTORY SETTINGS.
The issue STILL persists although not as severe. Internet browing is bearable but nowhere near perfomring as it should. Even simple task such as opening up a new tab or switching tabs results in a spinning beach ball for about 5-10 seconds. Opening an application such as Pages or Twitter results in a spinning beach ball for 5-10 seconds before working slowly. Simply right clicking results in spinning beach ball.
I have no idea what the issue could be at this point. I am now about to attempt to verify the disk again to see if it fixes any issues but a year old Apple product should NOT be behaving like this.
Any advice is appreciated!

I've been scouring the community for help, and hoping you might be able and willing to look at my etrecheck results and share any wisdom and feedback, problem causers you see! I updated to OS Mavericks through apple updates without really realizing I was installinga whole new system. I have been experiencing the lag issues that many others have, and have a Kernel_Task for which the CPU skyrockets at random and consistently slows things down. I've run disk repair in recovery mode, repaired permission, PRAM, a few 'basics', but have not really had success in addressing the issue (I guess because I don't really understand the issue!)
Thanks in advance for any time and suggestions!!

MacBook Pro extremely slow start up, Rainbow wheel of death. HELP!
Hi there
My Mac has just suddenly started becoming very slow. Upgraded to Mavericks 2 months ago. Had an issue at first install that was resolved with re-installation.
Has become very slow to boot, freezing at the Grey Screen with the Apple and spining cog. (Kernel I think?)
It is also very slow once logged in. Nothing has changed system wise. Any help would be much appreciated.

Had already tried to delete CleanMyMac. So I got EasyFind, and used it to delete/destroy the rest of the files. Did the same for Roxio, Sierra Wireless and Seagate. PaceAp would have been installed with Pro Tools, which is now gone.
There are several files associated with Sierra, PaceAp and Seagate (.plist & .bom files) that I cannot delete, as I get an error saying that cannot be deleted.
Tried Verifying and Repairing Disk Permissions - All was OK
Ran through the Sleep, then Restart, then Shutdown sequence. Noticed no difference.
Reset P-Ram.
Reset SMC
Rebooted again, holding command + R and ran the disk utility.
First Verified the disk. Got errors:
Invalid Directory item count
Volume bitmap needs minor repair for orphaned blocks
The volume Machintosh HD was found corrupt and needs to be repaired.
So I then ran Repair disk, it ran through and then said:
The volume Machintosh HD was repaired successfully.
The battery condition is normal

I then rebooted, but nothing has changed. At the moment it boots to the grey screen with the Apple logo and cogwheel. Takes about 10 mins to then go through to log in. Often the fan will start running as if the system is under load.
When I click login the rainbow wheel pops up and it freezes for a while. Then it eventually loads the home page. Takes another 10 - 20 mins to load everything, the clock and wifi connections in the top right take ages to load.
It will be extremely slow for another 20 mins or so. Cant open folders or do simple tasks without getting the rainbow wheel. Then after a little while it seems to run OK, but still sluggish.
There are no programs that are launched on startup, and I close all programs before shutting the system down. I have over 100 GB free space on the harddrive. Yet I notice in the data from EtreCheck, it states there is only 66 Gb.
Haven't used Time Machine, as my external harddrive is formatted to FAT32, and I have nowhere to store all its contents to reformat it to Mac Extended Journal. I have backed up all the files from the system that I need.
So is there anything else I can try? Should I try a full system wipe and reinstallation? If so, how do I go about this?
I'm assuming unlike PC's, it's not just a simple task to replace the harddrive, if it is failing hardware?
I'm in rural Australia, so not readily near a Mac Support Shop. But if it is hardware, I'll just have to figure out some way to get to one.
Here's the updated info from EtreCheck, if its of any use..
Thanks again everyone the help, muchos gracias!

Mid-2010 Macbook Pro White Screen of Death?
Hi all,
I have a Mid- 2010 Macbook Pro, running 10.8.2 that, when booting, sounds the Startup Chime but no Apple logo appears, just a white screen. I'm in IT so I've done several things, but nothing has worked and I couldn't find a previous discussion that was similar to mine.
Here's what I've done so far:
- Changed hard drives
- reseated RAM
- Unplugged Battery
- Reset the PRAM
- Tried to boot from CD using CTRL- C
- Tried Recovery boot using CTRL- R
Anything else I could try? I keep thinking it may have something to do with the Time Change, but that seems a little weird to me if that's the cause. It worked fine late last night and then it did this in the morning (after the time change).
Thanks for any help you can give!Hi sanjampet,
Tried the SMC reset, safe boot, CD boot, and Recovery boot all with no luck. Not sure why it's going on, but it's looking more and more like a hardware issue to me. It's a white screen (instead of a grey screen), so I'm worried that it's something with it. I'm going to try and see if I can remote into it using Screen Sharing to see if it's something with the display.
My wife used it last and she told me that it was slow on the internet with the mouse freezing up, so she held down the power to turn it off then it came up with the white screen which hasn't come back on since. I'm using an 3rd party SSD hard drive and replaced it with another SATA hard drive, but it didn't help.
Thanks,
JN -
Mid 2010 Macbook Pro, all application crash.
I have a mid-2010 MacBook Pro, which the original version was 10.6, now upgraded to maverick. I had no problems with it until 2 days ago it started.
EVERYTHING crashed. Safari. Firefox. Skype. iTunes. EVEN finder. It only crash if i type something in the search bar. Like in safari, the website bar, if i type there something, it will freeze for 1 sec and crash. Same with firefox. Finder, if i type something in file searcher bar, it crash, causing the icons to disappear, and be back in 2 seconds. Even my games crash often. Like 30s - 2 hours each crash. I am now desperate because I can't use my Mac without typing anything. Also, top-right corner, where the wifi and things there has moved to the right, and cannot be seen expect for my hamachi icon there. What the fck is going on.Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test. -
Mid-2010 MacBook Pro: freezing and spinning wheel
Hi there,
I have a mid-2010 MacBook Pro (I know, old) that's been in very good condition. I upgraded my OS to Mavericks in May, which is when it started being slow and crashing/freezing around twice a week. For example, just doing normal things like surfing the web or checking the Airport or battery life will suddenly freeze the cursor which will then turn into the spinning wheel of death. Sometimes I can wait it out if it's a few minutes but sometimes I have to manually turn off the computer and then turn it back on when it's been hours of no change or improvement. I know it's probably best to downgrade back to Snow Leopard but I'd really like to keep my OS. Are there other things I can do to optimize my Mac? I've tried keeping fewer files on the desktop and emptying out the trash often and it seemed to help for a while. Other suggestions?
Thanks for reading!Wow, that post looks like a mess...I will try to make it more readable.
Thanks for your reply. I had to wait a few days for the problem to crop up again. I followed your instructions to the best of my ability. The thing is that the problem (i.e. freezing and spinning wheel) happened at 8:19 and the closest messages in the Console were are time stamped 8:17 and 8:25. So I will put them here for you to look at if you don't mind:

Mid 2010 Macbook Pro - Change MTU size kills internet (Jumbo Frames)
Hi everyone, i'm hoping someone here can enlighten or help me solve my problem I'm having.
I am trying to change my MTU size to enable Jumbo frames on my 13 inch Mid 2010 Macbook Pro. I recently bought a ReadyNAS Ultra and would like to speed up transfers to the unit.
My setup is as follows:
I have my ReadyNAS Ultra 2 and 2010 Macbook Pro (Core 2 Duo) wired via cat6 ethernet to my 5th Generation Apple Airport Extreme. The Airport Extreme is connected via cat5e to my AT&T Uverse Gateway which is set up to allow my Airport to assign DHCP and NAT (gateway is in bridge mode with wireless off).
Anyways, I have enabled Jumbo frames on my ReadyNAS, when I enable them on my MBP.. it applies fine. It disconnects / reconnects the ethernet like it should, but then my connection drops. I can't see any devices on my LAN and I cannot access any internet websites, but according to the network pane I am still assigned a valid dhcp address. When I manually try to increase my MTU size, the same thing happens (from 9000 to 1600 I tried every size).....
Could it be my MBP just can't suppose the increase of MTU size? It leaves them at 1500 when I set it to automatic... if it doesn't support the increased MTU size, why would it let me custom change the MTU and even give an option to select "Jumbo Frames (9000)"?
I appreciate any help in advance!!asdftroy wrote:
If you did read my post then you would have saw that the option is there, but that is not entirely what my inquiry is about. The option isn't working as intended, and I was wondering if anyone had the same issues as me. Thanks anyways.
Anyone else?
The way you responded to someone trying to help you probably means others will be hesitant to try. -
Updating my mid 2010 MacBook Pro
This is the third time I have tried to post this so if it is here three times.....my humble apologies...
After adding Yosemite to my mid 2010 macbook pro I realized, after experiencing the beach ball of death every 3-4 minutes and slow activity, that my 4 gigs Ram probably wasn't enough and upgraded to Crucial 8 gigs....no more beach ball and nearly instant screen changes. I have ordered a Crucial MX 100 512 Gb SSD and figure this is a great time to add windows. I work in medicine and need to access a medical center portal that doesn't support Mac. I never game nor do I do graphics. Just business and communications, paper writiing net surfing for research etc. I teach online also
Here's the question...How much space should I dedicate on the new SSD for the windows partition? any suggestions. I am ignorant when it comes to understanding this computer world, but I can fix headaches and snotty noses pretty well. And I can follow instructions (LOL).
BobHello there, Robert.

An Internet connection
An administrator account in OS X to use Boot Camp Assistant
The keyboard and mouse or trackpad that came with your Mac (If they aren’t available, use a USB keyboard and mouse)
A minimum of 2 GB of RAM, 30 GB of free disk space are recommended if you are installing Windows for the first time, or 40 GB of free disk space if you are upgrading from a previous version of Windows
An authentic Microsoft Windows full install disc or ISO file
A built-in optical drive, or a compatible external optical drive is required if you are using an install disc
8 GB USB storage device, or external drive formatted as MS-DOS (FAT) to install the downloaded drivers
Before you install Windows, you should use Software Update to make sure OS X and your computer's firmware are up to date.

Why is startup on my macbook pro extremely slow (3 minutes) after Yosemite install?
Prior to Yosemite upgrade, my mid-2010 Macbook pro (4 gb RAM) booted up fairly quickly (within 1 minute). After the Yosemite installation, boot time now is approximately 3 minutes. I have repaired disc permissions and that did not fix the problem. Any suggestions?
nothing seems out of order, apart from the useless Norton Internet Security.
though, since you don't have lots of RAM, consider rebooting the Mac everyso often ( "Time since boot: 7 days 3:2:21").
" Battery Health: Replace Now": indeed, the battery is dead
Did it start getting slow since Yosemite upgrade? (the new OS does tend to slow things down) -
HT201364 I downloaded OS X Mavericks over the weekend and it has made my Macbook Pro extremely slow
I downloaded OS X Mavericks over the weekend and it has made my Macbook very slow. Browsing has become slow. Mail hardly moves. It takes ages to show contents of inbox, yes including previously downloaded emails too. Thus the overall experience is very disappointing. IS THERE A WAY TO GO BACK TO THE PREVIOUS OS X that I had? OS X Mavericks should be renamed as OS X HAVOCKWRECKS.
I am just a Apple user guy.

Hardware Information:
MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010)
MacBook Pro - model: MacBookPro6,2
1 2.4 GHz Intel Core i5 CPU: 2 cores
4 GB RAM This is a minimum amount of RAM for basic Mavericks function (I know the specs say 2 GB). If you are doing anything more than just checking your email you may want more RAM, especially if you are doing things that are more memory intensive, like audio/video recording/editing. It all depends on your degree of tolerance for the SBBOD (the spinning beachball of death). At the moment you've got no page-outs so that's good.

These next categories are all things that are loaded at startup and can be potential causes for poor performance, as they run in the background. These all need to be looked at carefully if you want your mac to run better. The rules are:
1) if you can live without the app that installs these potential culprits, uninstall it. You have to uninstall the app itself, not just the file that is listed here.
2) if you can't live without the app, then at least research it to see if it is compatible with Mavericks, and make sure you have the latest version.
Some of these I don't know about, but I've marked those with **; you'll have to research them yourself.

Mid 2010 Macbook Pro Keeps Restarting due to Kernel Panic. Ideas for how to fix?
So my Mid 2010 Macbook Pro keeps randomly restarting, and giving me a screen that says something like "your computer restarted due to a problem."
Looks like it as a kernel panic, but I have no idea what this is. Seems to be no pattern for when it crashes. Used to do it maybe once a month and now this is the 5th time in two days.
Any idea what might be going on? Looked at past threads but nothing seemed to apply.

Mid-2010 MacBook Pro stuck in clamshell mode?
I asked a similar question to this earlier, but now the problem has been more consistent. I have a mid-2010 MacBook Pro that I often use with an external display, plugged in via mini-DVI to HDMI adapter. The problem is, after I've unplugged my macbook to "go mobile" and am away from my display, if I ever have to restart my computer or boot into Windows 7, my computer will think it's still in clamshell mode. The screen will stay dark, and if the lid is closed, the white light will stay on steadily, not pulsing. However, if I plug into my external display when this is happening, the external display works fine and I have a display again. When I look up my displays while connected to an external display while this is happening, my internal display isn't even listed in the system report; it's like it doesn't exist! And this is especially a problem now as I am away on a 3 week school related trip.
I have not been able to consistently reproduce this problem. Sometimes it restarts normally, sometimes I restart it and get the gray + apple logo screen that then goes dark, and sometimes the internal display just never turns on. The problem doesn't seem to be related to an OS, as it happens when booting into Windows 7 OR mountain lion 10.8.5. I've tried resetting PRAM mutliple times as well as performing an SMC reset multiple times, and neither has helped. This even happened when I was booting into a mountain lion install USB, as I thought maybe a fresh install would help. I've seen many other forums discussing a similar issue, but none described quite like mine.
What gives?? How can I get my macbook to restart normally? I really don't want to have to make a repair, even though it's looking like a hardware problem. My computer is one month after Apple Care has expired, and I can't afford a pricey repair as I'm a very in debt student who only has a MacBook because his school gave it to him in the first place. I would be very appreciative for any suggestions and/or help! Thanks!Hello thedoctor8706
Reset your NVRAM and test to see if that resolves your issues. Typically that will resolve video, volume, startup disk selection, and kernel panic issues.
