Mid-2011 27" iMac constantly freezing/ restarting

Hey there, so I'm at the end of my tether here because I've barely been able to do anything on my iMac as of late because I've been experiencing severe freezing issues.
I'll start from the beginning:
I've had the iMac since mid-2011. It's a 27" iMac with a 3.4 GHz Intel Core i7 processor, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory, and AMD Radeon HD 6970M 2048 MB graphics. It's served me so well over the years, but 2015 has been the start of something hellish.
I first noticed it a month or so having upgraded to Warlords of Dreanor in World of Warcraft. This is the game I primarily play, and have played for years. The graphics have consistently been played on 'ultra' (the highest setting) and have been as smooth as butter since I can remember. But as I say, a month or so into this new expansion I notice that everything's loading up a lot slower than previously. Previously when I minimised the game into windowed mode, it would work in a flash, now it would be sluggish it resets the game's UI overtime I did so. I lowered the graphics thinking perhaps this was the problem, but it wasn't. Then the crashing started happening.
I would be playing, and suddenly my iMac would crash. The screen would look like it glitches out with an array of pixelated colours, then turn one of a numerous amount of colours with a corresponding colour repeating as vertical stripes. It would remain this way until I had to hard reset it with the power switch. This persisted even when not gaming now. I would be watching a youtube video, or refresh tumblr, and the same thing would happen.
I took it upon myself to see what could be up and I found this iMac (27-inch): AMD Radeon 6970M Video Card Replacement Program - Apple Support
Thinking this was the problem, I booked my iMac to be seen with a genius.
Now with my iMac infant of a genius, he ran whatever stand tests they do with iMacs on my type, and said the graphics card wasn't showing up with any particular problems. Nor anything else. He took it in though so they could run further testing. A week or so later I am told there's nothing wrong with the graphics card but a fan doesn't seem to be working and they can replace that at a cost & labour charge. My receipt lists the part as "FAN, HARD DRIVE", it was only cheap (£13).
I get my iMac home, thinking it's all good to go! and... it's bad. It's really, really bad guys.
Now for whatever reason I do not know, my iMac starts glitching out on me for what seems like nothing!
I startup the iMac and it will always spend a minute or two on the white screen with the loading apple. Once I'm logged in, it may only be a minute or so until I'm hit with the screen turning one of a numerous amount of colours with a corresponding colour repeating as vertical stripes. If I'm logged in for long enough to have opened iTunes and got some tunes playing - the music will stutter in the background on the crash and within a minute or so the iMac will restart itself.
Here's the thing though, this crashing is so sporadic. I've kept a log in my iOS notes of when it happens, what I had open when it did, and what I was doing, and there's nothing of any correlation! In fact, the longest time period I didn't experience a crash was during a few hours long session of Diablo 3 (graphics high).
Unfortunately it's not a technical log of any sort, all my logs are akin to:
12/02/15 21:16 watching Netflix full screen through chrome, Netflix was paused, when going to unpause screen goes a cardboard orange colour with faint grey vertical lines. After less than a minute iMac restarts itself.
Taking photos whenever I could of said crash, like so:
I was at the point this evening where I tried on 4 consecutive restarts to get a game of Diablo 3 going and couldn't get more than 1 minute into playing before this crash happens.
What on Earth could be the issue? Because the Genius guys certainly didn't find any problems after their week long 'intensive' checkup...
Thanks all!

I've got the exact same machine and I also had a graphics card issue.
When the Mac starts-up, the graphics card on the Intel processor does
all the initial work. If you get to the stage when you see your user accounts
you know that the graphics processing has been delegated to the on-board
dedicated graphics card.
If you do get to this stage and it holds steady, it's probably not the graphics
card that is causing the problem. When mine crashed, it also took out my
USB ports and I also had a corrupt hard drive! Don't judge a underlying
issue by it's apparent symptoms.
My problems started in September 2014. If you are in the UK, judging by the
£13, you have 6 years for your machine to function reasonably properly and
for the reseller directly (Apple indirectly) no fix any issues free of charge.
Apple does advertise it's 6 year liability to comply with the Sale Of Goods Act
which is unprecedented in the commercial world so five stars their! But your
legal contract is with the reseller. You are also entitled to any costs you
incurred like delivery of the machine.
I wrote to my reseller and they agreed without question. After signing some
papers to agree with the Apple part replacement program or something it's
been running as new.
If you haven't done so already, contact the re-seller and explain the problems
and show them the evidence you have. If that fails then you should be able to
take the machine to a Apple specialist for it to be diagnosed with all costs
covered by the Apple programme.

Tried updates, calling Apple etc. But no luck.  Windows doesn't recognize the 3rd screen while

  • What windows version is best for my mid-2011 27inch iMac?

    L.S.
I'd like to Bootcamp windows on my mid 2011 27inch iMac.
What version of windows will give me the least amount of problems.
Also, my Dvd drive isn't working. Is this going to be a problem?
    Thanks in advance!

Windows 7 would be the best as XP doesn't have security updates coming in.
A friend of mine has dual booted to windows 7 for gaming and hasnt had any issues.
Just install with a USB and not using an ODD.

  • Imac constantly freezing up

my imac (which i got in 2009) is absolutely constantly freezing up. sometimes i will be able to get to the desktop, sometimes it doesnt make it past the grey apple symbol and the loading circle, and everything in between. i experienced these problems for a while, and eventually got myself mackeeper. this cleaned up my computer quite a bit but it still continued to freeze every once and a while. it eventually went back to freezing constantly every time i turned it on. recently i got sophos antivirus which scanned it (only partially because it always froze before it could finish) and it found something seen as a threat called genieo installer, which i apparently downloaded 2 copies of last year once in may and once in august, but i looked it up and its something for a newspaper that i have no memory of downloading nor would there be a reason for me download it. after doing more research, it has apparently mysteriously appeared on other computers that had passwords, therefore protecting them, which mine didnt. even though it was not even on my computer, but on my external hard drive which i was using, i decided to wipe the entire computer clean, reinstall lion, and take only the files i needed (like my itunes library and some school documents) out of the time machine. i did this, and my computer still managed to find a way to freeze. so my questions are:
is my computer messed up beyond return?
should i wipe it clean again and get rid of the external drive?
should i take it into the apple store?
is there anything i can do (such as download a different antivirus program) to fix it?

    docdempseylwc wrote:
its not the fact that its installed on my computer, its not because i wiped it. the wiping it got rid of everything, all the applications and everything.
Then I don't understand why you are asking if you need an anti-virus program to fix it since you say you have only installed Lion and user files. How could there be malware involved. The problems you describe are rarely caused by malware and if your OS X is fully up-to-date there isn't any currently known malware that could impact it.
I think you should look for a hardware problem at this point. Using Apple Hardware Test isn't proof that you don't have a problem, but it might show something. If you still have your original hard drive, then it's over three years old and could easily be failing. Check it with SMART Utility.

  • My 21.5" quad core i5 iMac mid 2011 with LION keeps freezing.

this has never happened before while using snow leopard, but when using lion suddenly it freezes when i was on youtube and it has frozen when i was syncing my ipod. the other bad thing about it, is the computer doesn't know that it has frozen and it wont automatically restart even though i have the setting on.
hopefully this is just teething problems since lion is a new operating system, but i'd expect more from a company like apple.
any suggestions? or maybe a patch will come out?

    hello,
I am yet to upgrade my OS to Lion but I have experienced this thing on my leopard 10.6 quiet a few times. I called the customer care support guy he gave me a solution to make the macbook run smooth without gettign freezed ( i hope it also works for the iMac ). So, what he told me to do is to drag and drop the entire caches as well as the startupitems folder ( Macintosh HD> Library ) and also the caches folder from your computer account library. restart computer then empty trash box and again restart the computer and use it but honestly bro I dont know if this will help you in OS x Lion.
Can you not restart the iMac after it is getting freezed ??

  • Mid 2011 Macbook Pro keeps freezing and Chrome won't work.

Starting two days ago my Macbook has started freezing. It was working fine then an hour later it started freezing. It doesn't seem to matter what the program is, Chrome, Microsoft Word, Finder, Notes, everything; except for activity monitor.I have had troubles with my HD as my main Tb hard drive failed probably a month ago; when ever I started up the computer it shows the grey file with a blinking question mark. Never was able to resolve that. Now I am on the stock HD, 500 Gb, and have used about 51 Gb of it; with no huge programs such as ableton, PS, etc. on this HD. I have upgraded my ram to 16 Gb, but I am currently running 1.5 gb wired, 1.3 gb active, and 300 Mb inactive; totalling to 3.1 gb used and 12.9 free. I also have 500mb pages in and 0mb pages out. This maybe the reason, however I have no applications open but when looking at the processes in activity monitor it doesn't show anything abnormal. I am currently using around 2-8% of my CPU; my CPU being an I5. However, when it freezes and after it finally ends beach balling the cpu percentage skyrockets to around 40% then falls back to around 4. Yesterday I tried loading google chrome and now it says there is an ssl error, and my date in the top right corner has been rolled back to January 1 2012. I Tried chaning it but it beach balled and I shut off my computer. Right now I am using Safari, and have closed many, random, processes on the activity monitor and it seems to be running smoother with no beach balls. Anyone have any suggestions?
**When I tried to add tags posting this my safari froze. When i closed xcel in my activity monitor safari started working again. Is this possibly a RAM issue?

So my genius confirmed that my logic board had died. he said it's very rare for this to happen unless there's been physical damage I.e water damage. But this one had him stumped he thinks my hard drive is also shot too.

  • Macbook Air 13'' Mid-2011 Keyboard and Trackpad freezing

  • IMac constantly Freeze while watching Youtube or Flash-based clip

    Hi everyone
It is really getting on my nerves every time that I was watching Youtube or Website using Flash, the machine crashes and crashes and crashes!!!!
I did the Hardware Test and it didn't find any problem with Hardware.
I used the installation DVD to repair Disk Permission also
Could anyone please please help me how to trouble-shoot this seem-to-be-permanent issue???
Thank you very much in advance.
    James
P.S. My iMac was middle 2009, with Model identifier iMac9,1, SMC version 1.44f0

First do what whyisitsohard (HUH?) suggests. If that does not resolve the issue take a look at how much free space is available on your Hard drive. I would not recommend running Mac OS X with less than 10% free space remaining on your startup volume. The free space is used for hidden swap files that Mac OS X needs do to virtual memory, and for other temporary files used by the system. Once free space gets low, the remaining free space becomes more and more fragmented into small pieces. That makes it hard for Mac OS X to operate efficiently. This issue is most apparent when watching videos.

  • Mid-2011 i7. iMac and USB shuts down on sleep

Just got a refurb i7 21" and am loving it. But I was having trouble with it shutting down when going to sleep and therefore not waking from sleep without a full boot up.
After finding this closed thread (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2258706?start=0&tstart=0), I wanted to confirm that unfortunately even after the Lion 10.7.2 update, some powered USB hubs (for example Newer Tech 7 port powered about 1 year old) still cause the iMac to shut down on sleep.
A new Belkin 7 port powered ("high speed for 2.0 or 1.1 devices") does the trick and now the iMac will wake from sleep properly and not shut down.
Just wanted to pass this on to others who might be having trouble and wondering if their motherboard is fried or something.
Also, if a USB port stops working, do an SMC reset (unplug, hold power button down).

Can't airplay in displays. Can use airplay to apple tv when I start iTunes. anyway to see display from iMac?

You also may want to refer to the Apple TV support located at http://www.apple.com/support/appletv/.
On there they have a section that refers to AirPlay and how to troubleshoot it.

  • Recently I bought a mini DVI to HDMI converter  from eBay for my iMac 21.5 Mid 2011, but only later I realised that it does not have the mini DVI port in that. How can I connect my iMac to a LG smart TV through a HDMI cable?

This is the picture of all the ports from my iMac
This is the mini DVI to HDMI converter which I bought from ebay. And I have the HDMI cable to connect it to my TV
Could anyone please suggest me a solution how I could connect my iMac to the LG smart TV? Also I need to know if this transmits the audio as well to the smart TV?
Suggestions are welcomed. I really appreciate and thank you for your time

I would suggest looking into a Thunderbolt to HDMI connector. In this case, you may be able to use the TV as an external monitor. For this option, please confirm through additional research. I have not tested it personally.
You can also use an Apple TV, which connects with HDMI. In this case, you can use Airplay Mirroring. Not all Macs support Airplay Mirroring, so you need to check first. I have a Mid-2011 27" iMac, and it supports Airplay Mirroring. I don't use it often because my TV is in another room, but I just tried it and it worked. It had to change the screen resolution to work well, so I don't know if I would want to use it as my day to day monitor. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5404

i have a mid 2011 i5 imac and i want to transfer my vinyl records to itunes but i dont know what usb turntable would be best for my imac that has compatible software for transfer to itunes

    Hallo,
I use an Akai usb turntable with the Audacity sw delivered with it. To monitor during recording I also use the LineIn utility (all this on a Macbook Pro with Mavericks).
It works fine, only the input volume of the usb audio port cannot be adjusted (at least I did not yet discover how to do it) and the volume of the music is lower than other music imported into iTunes from CD or iTunes store, but still acceptable.
    Success, Jean

  • How do I restore my 27" mid-2011 iMac EXACTLY the way it was after hard disk replacement?

    Hi all.
Recently received an email from Apple saying that the 1TB Seagate hard drive in my 27" mid-2011 iMac is apt to fail anytime. Apparently they used some bad hard drives in the mid-2011 27" iMacs which are problematic so they're offering me a free replacement to a brand new hard drive. I'll be sending in my iMac for the replacement sometime in the next few days.
In preparation for it, I've backed up my entire system using Time Machine into an external harddrive. The backup is up to date & includes all system files. I've also made a Lion install disk on an 8GB USB flash/pen drive using Carbon Copy Cloner.
My question is: When I get my iMac back after the hard disk replacement, will I be able to restore my iMac to EXACTLY the way it was before the replacement using the Time Machine backup & the Lion install disk that I've prepared? When I mean EXACTLY, I do mean EXACTLY, e.g I don't have to re-install all the programs I have, my settings for the programs I have will stay intact, everything is where it should be etc...i.e EXACTLY the way my iMac is right now.
If yes, how do I do it? I've read Pondini's guide: http://pondini.org/TM/14.html
However it is less than clear on certain points, e.g in my case, which one do I have to use to restore my system to the way it was...the Time Machine backups I have on the external HDD or the Lion install disk that I made using Carbon Copy Cloner? And how do I go about doing the restore?
I'd appreciate any & all help given. Thanks in advance!

Already answered. Just note that FW is much faster than USB. See http://help.bombich.com/kb/troubleshooting/how-long-should-the-clone-or-backup-t ake for details.
I already have CCC installed so I'll probably try it out. Are the steps outline here the one that I should do to restore the CCC clone when I get my Mac with the new HDD back? See: http://help.bombich.com/kb/overview/restoring-data-from-your-backup#full_volume_ restore
    Yes.
Another question: while I'm booted on the backup/clone, and just after I've wiped the old HDD, how do I reinstall the OS to create a generic user account? Will I have to use a Lion install USB disk?
No. IIRC (if I remember correctly), you can either use a saved Lion installer (hopefully it exists on your backup/clone) or use the Recovery HD. If you have the USB stick w/Lion installer on it, use that.

  • Windows 7 Pro on iMac (mid 2011) and network slows down

We have an office with about 8 mid 2011 21" iMacs running Windows 7 Pro courtesy of Bootcamp.  The machines boot quickly and all programs open quickly.  They each have from 2 - 4 mapped network drives to a 2012 Windows Server 2008 R2 HP GL380 server on-site and are wired with Gig Ethernet HP business class switches).  The users' Documents, Desktop, and a couple other directories are re-directed to the file server using an Active Directory Group Policy Object (GPO).
A couple of the computers will regularly start to slow down after only 20 or 30 minutes of use.  The rest have occasionally experienced it but it's always independent of others experiencing the slowdown.  The computers with the more regular slowdowns I've also booted into OS 10.7.x and the transfer rates to the same file server are fast and consistent.  BTW, all computers are current on Windows updates and Apple updates.
I've tried some of the suggestions I found here:  http://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/950538-running-windows-7-via-bootcamp-on-mac-m ini-slows-down-over-time/
    1.)
Disable all property's that has something to do with "Offload" under advanced on the nic properties.
    Also disable "Recieve Side Scaling".
And set "Speed and Duplex" to auto.
    2.)
Turn off windows feature "Remote Differential Compression" (Uninstall) under "programs and features".
    3.)
    Run fallowing command in cmd:
netsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled
netsh int tcp set global chimney=disabled
i ran disabled on every setting i could.
so it looks like this now:
    C:\Users\tab>netsh int tcp show global
    Querying active state...
    TCP Global Parameters
    Receive-Side Scaling State : disabled
    Chimney Offload State : disabled
    NetDMA State : disabled
Direct Cache Acess (DCA) : disabled
Receive Window Auto-Tuning Level : disabled
Add-On Congestion Control Provider : none
    ECN Capability : disabled
    RFC 1323 Timestamps : disabled
    4.)
Uncheck fallowing under your local area connection properties:
    Link Layer Mapper I/O Driver.
    Link Layer Responder.
With all of that said, do any of you have any suggestions of what to check?

  • PC Games and peripherals on Windows 7 on Lion on mid-2011 iMac. Possible?

Sorry for the long marquee, but I want to get anecdotal-experience answers on this convoluted subject before I waste a couple months of my fairly-rapidly-closing life --carpe diem. all y'all -- on something that's doomed from the very start.
For reasons I can't quite fathom (relative installed population, maybe), there are very few racing sims -- none, as far as I'm concerned -- for the Mac. That's most def not true for the PC -- I've been a Mac-only user since 1989, but the PC has always been -- when working -- a pretty good gaming platform (ALL it's good for AFAIC), with tons of titles, and the ability to accomodate multi, MULTI-axis controllers, like force-feedback steering wheels with gas, brake, and clutch pedals, and gearshift. I know of nothing like that for the Mac, even if there were racing sims that would run on a Mac.
So here's what I need to know: if I had a Boot Camp partition on my home drive (Macintosh HD), with a 32-bit or 64-bit (full version) of Windows 7 Home Premium, Windows 7 Professional, or Windows 7 Ultimate (necessary for my Mid-2011 27" iMac running Lion or above) installed on that partition, could I then install PC racing sims on that Boot Camp Windows 7-whatever Platform, and be able to use multi-axis controllers, like a Thrustmaster wheel, pedal, and shifter set?
Please, if anyone has been able to do this, by whatever means, on a mid-2011 iMac running OS X 10.7.x or above, I'd be eternally grateful if you could share your experience.
    Thanks!
    Bart

Seeing as how there are about 117 different versions of 64-bit Windows 7 out there, is there any particular version that is more advantageous -- in the case of Microsoft products, that means less bug-ridden -- for use on Boot Camp? I've seen reasonably priced ($66) versions like this:
"Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit FULL - BRANDED"
But then the description consists of this mangled English:
"This product will be branded HP, Dell, etc. but will do a FULL install on any brand computer and includes a DVD and COA. This is only unique to branded? [sic -- BB] OEM Windows products and not to non branded OEM Windows products. If you are the person people always seem to ask for help when their computer isnt right you should be fine with this. If you are not that kind of user you may want to stick to a non branded oem. Once again this only applies to Mac users [really sic -- BB]."
This is the only part of the description on this product page that even mentions "Mac users," and I'm left wondering if this "FULL - BRANDED" 64-bit version of Windows 7 will work OK on a Boot Camp partition on an OS X 10.7.x -- 10.8.x iMac.
Knowing all too well what a rat's-nest Windows has been since it was first foisted upon an unsuspecting public in 1985, with security problems that, after nearly 30 years, have still not been addressed, I want a 64-bit version of Win 7 that's going to give me the least amount of grief on my Boot Camp partition.
As this thread seems to be pretty much a dead letter, as many discussion threads become after an answer is provided, should I create a new question titled:
"Which 64-bit version of Windows 7 will work best on a Boot Camp partition on an OS X 10.7.x -- 10.8.x iMac?"
    Thanks again!
